Normandy American Cemetery 

The Normandy American Cemetery, near Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, containing the graves of 9,386 dead.

 Most of these dead are from the actual landings on 6 June 1944.  Some are from the follow-on campaigns around the beach head and subsequent moves inland.  WWII veterans of the Division and several other WWII veterans of this fight have said that the first 20 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan" were almost "unwatchable"…realistic, too realistic, even for a movie.  Over half of the men buried at Normandy were dead when the 3d Armored Division landed in France…  to begin her rush with death and end several months later hundreds of miles inland, having suffered more casualties than any other Armored Division in the US Army…
