Had some great times in Germany, hated to leave. I earned the EIB when I was a PFC. Went to Nijmegen twice to do the 100 mile march; Our team came in second both times. Left a sergeant. We were told our unit was the first one in europe to fire the Dragon anti tank weapon (I never did like that thing) Great bunch of guys, great leaders.

Arrived in Freidburg "Ray Barracks" June, 1988 assigned to HQ66 as Ldr. Went through Transition to the "smooth bore cannon" At Graf.Seeing my potental I was assigned to B Company "BUSH WACKERS" soon after a few months. I was prior service before I became a "Iron Duke" we love to show who was the best especially when "HONDO" aka Ltc. Campbell was our Boss before Ltc. Merritt took us to the gulf (RIP)We loved to train and Train, train, train is all we did in the 3rd Brigade either Freidburg training area or it was Honhenfels preparing for our mission of all missions IRAQ ODS we were once again on a "FTX" when we recieved orders to Deploy i was a cpl(p) Gunner under the guidance of TC's of all time SSG Forshee, great man! We went, we saw, and you already know the rest!!! Loved every minute of my time with all of my Brothers in Arms, honestly wished it never ended. God Bless! Cpl.Seals White2Gulf-Out!!!!!!

Volunteered for the draft in Oct. 1956 and trained with the 4th Armored Division at Fort Hood before being shipped to Germany on the U.S.S. Upshur in April of 1957 as part of Operation Gyroscope. Now part of the 3rd Armored, I spent my entire tour at Drake Edwards Kaserne in Frankfurt. My buddies and I had the time of our lives, unlike so many of you who suffered many hardships. Still, I am proud to have been part of the 3rd and continue to have the greatest respect for the men and women who are now serving. Anyone out there from this time and place, this 75 year old would like to hear from you.

I was just a kid when I was there and I could not wait to get back to the states. Now when I look back on it I wish I could do it all over again and truly get out and see germany and all of what friedberg had to offer. I remember a number of nights barely hanging on to the bar at regina rocks. I would enjoy hearing from any who served in Hq company Division Trains during 1955-1957. We trained at Ft Knox and rotated with the division to Hanau to replace the 4th Infantry. We shipped back to the States after the arrival of Elvis Presley and "friends".

Gyro'd to Friedberg with 122d Ordnance and later transferred to Fliegerhorst when Division reorganized in 1957. Came back in US Army in 1964. Served overseas tours with 508th Abn in Canal Zone and with 5th SFGA and 101st Abn Div in RVN plus stateside assignments at Fort Benning, Fort Bragg, and Fort Ord. Deeply regret that I never had the opportunity to get back to Germany. All my best to those who have server and serve currently, especially those who are now in harms way!

Can't find too many Gyroscopers in the book. I guess we're starting to thin out.

Hi. My last assignment was with the 3AD, I retired in 1989. I was the NCOIC of the JAG office (MSG,E-8,) located on Drake Kaserne. Before I took over the NCOIC position, I was the NCOIC of the Giessen Legal Office. My first assignment to 3AD was with the 503th AVN Co (Provisional) located at Rose Airfield. I'll do some digging and see if I can find some pictures for you. I also have somewhere (VHS format) a promotional video that was sent to in-coming lawyers about 3AD. Hi Spearheads!

I did not serve in the 3AD, I am a german civilian living in Schluechtern (perhaps someone of you remembers the name)and so I know the area around very well! Schluechtern is in the southern corridor of the Fulda Gap at the end of the valley of the river Kinzig. If someone has any questions, feel free to write me an email, even if my english is not so well. Perhaps I can even make a few pics of places you like to see again? But I am feeling connected with the Units doing their service in our area, especially the 3AD and the 14CAV!!!

I was born in Schluechtern in 1978 and so I grew up with all the things you describe from your point of view here on this website and it is really interesting for me to read!

When I think back to this time I mostly remember a bunch of little boys in the age of 6 or 7 standing at the Crossing with traffic lights south of Schluechtern, where the tanks have to stop… we always made the V-Sign and asked: Do you have some stickers for me? or Can we have some meal packages please? and it was the greatest thing for us to get some US-Army stuff!!! Sometimes we even had some things to swap when a Jeep or a Hummer was parking at the fire station in Schluechtern. And if you had a can of bacardi-cola it was possible to swap a flashlight! Great! Is till got many things from this time on the attic, inclusive a complete BDU with Spearhead-Patch about which I was very proud. But I also remember that swapping was always very bad when military police was standing beside the road… 😉 Thank you to all who gave us a little thing!!

At the train station in Schluechtern tanks were often unloaded during REFORGER maneuvers and when they went down the Bahnhofstrasse past our house, everything was shaking and the glasses rattled in the cabinet. Often in the middle of the night. I also remember the sirens of which you talk, the sounds of shots in the night(by the way, they are still in use for fire-alarms), a night when 3 Chinook (we called them Bananenhubschrauber) landed on the meadow directly behind our house unloading fully equipped soldiers and a day when we walked into the forest, suddenly standing directly in front of some artillery howitzer without seeing them because of their good Camouflage… it was a nice time! When we heard the smallest noise of tanks we got on our bicycles to search them…

To that time I was in a rifle association in Herolz and the soldiers came to us to make target-shooting with their M16. That was also great. We even got a plastic tank model from the 14CAV as thanks which is still standing in our Schuetzenhaus.

I was very sad when the Coleman Kaserne and the Sickels Airfield closed in the 90ies, there was still a lot of traffic on Rhein-Main airbase because of gulf war but it was not the same as in cold war… I even collected some cut outs of the newspaper about the army leaving…

For many years I did not think about the cold war Era but now I try to find out as much as possible about my childhood because I myself became father (by the way my wife is from East Germany) and so the memories came back and I realized what was really going on at that time regarded with militarily background. We were so ensureless when we were kids. Today I realize that we lived in a combat zone which had been sacrificed to stop russian tanks… can you imagine the flash of an atomic explosion just when you are playing or sleeping in your own house? Today I am still getting a goose-struck when I think about that. The military plans which they hided from us were really catastrophically. We always asked ourselves if the antitank barriers in every street were to stop russian tanks or the fleeing population…

What do you know about the area of Schluechtern?

I know the ammo depots deep in the forests very well, especially the one in Alsberg where we used to make techno partys at the end of the 90ies. Today they are used to breed champignons! Were there atomic ammo in the past?

I am grateful for every little information. Especially for photos because I did not have a camera at that time… Or does anyone remember us?? 😉

I served under Cpt. Feorie (SP), Lt. Phillips, and SSG Calvin. Prior to the Gulf War I was attached as an FO to 1A FO and during the Gulf War was HMMWV Driver for Cpt. Feorie (SP). My roommate for most all of my years in Hanau was CPL. Whittaker (Odie) and SPC. Rico. Until finding this website I had lost touch with most all of my FIST Platoon! I have a picture of our last night in the Gulf with the entire Fire Support Element and would very much like to know how to post it, as I know the names of most everyone in the picture but some escape me. I started out as a UH-1B crew cheif Tail number 596 , and later we we got brand new AH1G's . First to arive was 70- 15982 , and then 991,992,993,994,996,,and 70-15994 was mine. I went to flight school in 1976,and retired in 1990,and was called back to active duty for the first desert war . I am still to this day flyig AH-1F cobras in Pakistan . I have so many good memories of those days , that I will share with you when I get home . On July 4th. 1970 a black G.I drowned in a lake north of Bad Noueheim. (sp.) Dec 25, 1970 a seargent in the HHQ bldg aspirated and died after drinking all day Christmas. In May of 1971 a G.I. was killed by being thrown down a staircase. He died at the Weisbadden A.F. Hospital of a subdural hematoma. He was air evaced.

I wanted to give a lot of thanks to CW3 Sousha from the 2d Batt 82nd FA Medical Platoon at Ray Barracks in Friedberg. My ETS physical following the war in 1991 that Chief Sousha completed saved me when I was diagnosed with cancer in summer 1999 at the VA Hospital in Houston. Can't believe that it's been 50 years since I arrived at Drake-Edwards. When J was there, the rehersal hall??, was in the old motor pool garage, with the grease pits filled in. Concrete was overlaid, but the quality was so poor that the concrete crumbled to dust. You couldn't sweep it clean. I was a Bari sax player.

I am writing to inquire about my uncle, Cpl. Dillon C. Summers (now deceased), a member of Combat Commmand B of the 391st Armored Field Artillery Battalion operating under the 3rd Armored Division in Europe between 1942-45.

I have sources that show that my uncle, per standard procedure of the time, was granted a 30-day furlough about December 8 or 10, 1944, based on the fact that he had "two awards, one wound." I also have a source that indicates he had been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster, which means he had already won one Bronze Star, so I'm assuming the "two awards" mentioned are those. I am interested in learning about the circumstances by which he earned both of those awards.

Thank you for whatever help or direction you might be able to offer in my search for this information.

I was a payroll clerk at HQ in Frankfort under Lt. Arvin Friend. Arvin was a Mormon from Salt Lake City and the nicest guy around. Also in our company were Abe, Eddie, Tom Murray from Muskogee, and Beck. I can't recall the name of the restaurant a few blocks off base that was run by a retired GI who married a local. I gained 25 lbs. in 15 months drinking Lowenbrau and eating schnitzel. We lived in old Nazi barracks that still had the German Falcon over the doors.

It would be great to see some of the "Boys and Girls" of the 3rd AD Band from 1976-1980 talk about ol' Drake Kaserne and the Beer Tents, Wine Festivals and the Change of Commands that we played in K-Town, Hanau, Gelnhausen. The HessenTag Fest with Mr Lake grinning from ear to ear as they brought out the trays of liter beers and Schnapps. The Fasching Parades (especially Koblenz!), drinking at "John's" just outside the front gate or a little further up at the Country Inn where they served the 3 liter boots!. . .Traveling in that slow Green Goose for a bus that had the 50 mph governor on it (so we were one big slow obstacles that the Germans had to avoid on the Autobahn), freaking the Germans out when we jumped into the Bumper Cars at their little Folksfests and actually bumped people instead of just traveling around in little circles. Living together on the top floor of the Headquarters building (where the roofs were slanted and your winter icebox was the ledge outside your window) and practicing in that cold converted barn that was the 3rd AD Bandhall. It would be great to hear from Ernie Pine, Danny Fullerton, Earl Black, Rick Hatton, or Mr Lake! I'm still in touch with Sam Manson, Steve Orebaugh, Mike Ruby, Jack McIntosh and Mike Fasig. I arrived in country Jan 7th, 1977. I loved it so much that I got a European out and stayed there until 1984 playing music in the clubs across Europe. What a great time of life it was! Prost und Zum Wohl my friends!

While TDY to Germany I had the opportunity to swing through Hanau on 1 JUL 09. Both depressing and hopeful. All US forces left Hanau earlier this year, so all the Kasernes are sitting locked up and abandoned. The hopeful part is what the Germans have done with Engineer Kaserne and Francois Kaserne on Lamboy Strasse. Impressive. Engineer is apartments and light business. Francios is a school (the old S3 building initially looked like a Kindergarden, which I found ironically fitting). Best part is the Francois guard house – its now a coffee shop!

Just a note, CSM Bobby G Williams was assigned from 1978 to 1980 , then he was assigned as the Commandant of the NCO Academy at Fort Campbell, until his retirement in 1983.

CSM Williams passed away on July 31st 2008 and is buried at theKentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville , KY

Served as a Medic (MOS 111.70) at Armstrong Barracks, Buedingen. Part of Big Lift, many weeks at Graf and temporary border duty at Fulda & Hohenfels while those units went to Graf. Got a call yesterday from John Hoaks (Mail Clerk – 3rd sq. 12th Cav) who re-connected me with Tom Whelan (also a Medic in 3-12. I am also in touch with Ron Rubicky who was with the 83rd Artillery at Armstrong at the same time. That was a 7th Army unit and Ron was a dental tech in our dispensary. About 10 years ago I returned and had the good fortune to reconnect with "Willy the Tailor" and his wife who were still sewing, etc., and both in good health. Willy had a shop in the basement of HQ Company Bldg., and it was on his radio that we first heard of Jack Kennedy being shot.

On July 4th, 1776, fifty-six men signed a document declaring their views and beliefs on how a people should be governed. Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers & large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.

Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."

They gave us a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted… We shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes this 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much too ask for the price they paid.
