It is interesting how time and age soften what was a terrible and divisive period in our country…Nam was raging..all who wore the uniform were seen as "baby killers"…race relations were poor and drugs were everywhere. But, I am proud to have served, I have fond memories of great bier, great friends, Friday nights at the movies in Frankfurt, and being a member of the Spearhead Division.

What were we guarding at Koppern?

Koppern Guard Site had almost anything you can think of. I remember seeing enough barbed wire to go around the world. Also the 16 wheelers that were in and out every day picking up ammo. At the back end was the CBR area, I remember the sign going in that area. It stated that if you seen any discoloration or smoke, or if a strange odor to put on your gas mask and leave the area. I also remember the kids all the way at the back who got us sandwiches and beer, made the long hours pass more quickly.

My mum, Gisela Pitz, age 57, worked as a nurse in the hospital of Gelnhausen. The hospital was near the Coleman barracks so she and her colleagues became friends with the US soldiers, exspecially the soccer players. The one she remembers best is James "Jim" Forbes. Is anybody out there who knows this guy? My mum never heard about him since he left Germany in 1968 and hopes that life was good to him after that.

How I remember Gelnhausen like it was yesterday, LTC St Onge, and now Retired MG St Onge; best Battalion Commander that ever was. SFC Santiago, now retired CSM Santiago; my mentor who lead by example which no other platoon sergeant could measure up to. SGT Martinmas, now SFC Marinmas last time I heard; best squad leader who love to play games (just happened he love to do it when the Commanding General was around, lets just say that CPT Hayhurst had him in the front leaning rest for the whole briefing, it is amazing what artillery stimulators sound like when they go off under a Bradley fighting vehicle) CPT Hayhurst now retired LTC Hayhurst; great company commander who was always on top of things very sharp. CPT Godina who said he would jump into a pool of muddy water at Graf if he could get promoted to Major. SPC Goodman, who love to ruffle 1LT Wells feathers? SSG Griswold pain in the ass who always wanted to be the center of attention. 2LT Voris, (part of the officer rat pack from west point; Thor, Terranne, the one from New Orleans, and Taffaris. I hope I spelled there names right) chase around all the Battalion commanders daughters who were of age. SPC Johnny Jones who was my running buddy. PFC Sheehan, A & B Beer, PFC Gething could drink. PFC Baez thought he was god’s gift to women. SPC Pete Rectangle could drink too. SGT Tantiado & CPL Friejsa had every new sound system you could possibly think of. SPC Bowie, cut his arm off he would bleed Mountain Dew. SPC Baker looked like a middle linebacker for a Pro-football team. CPL Lape, best damn training NCO that walked this earth. 1SG Johnson, man hated his extra duty 1900-2100 and 0300-0500. Only done it once (he liked that barber down the hill). Love the pizza at the NCO club with hot sauce. The last time I had pizza like that was with MG St Onge at the Pentagon, who ask me not to tell his wife. There are so many people that I could mention, but I would never finish this thing. B CO 1/48 INF “Blood & Guts” Battalion

With Hurricane Rita bearing down on Texas everyone needs to be aware that the Server hosting our A3ADV Website is in Austin, Texas. If Rita comes ashore near Houston & moves up towards Dallas Austin will be in the direct path of the storm.

Please note that our A3ADV Website may be off the net for an extended time as the area recovers from the storm.

Who remembers working in Graf, knee deep in snow or rain hitting your head. I say working cause I was a mechanic. I remember changing all the tires on a 930 series truck, all the tires!!! in the pouring rain. It took Harold Bell and I three days. As much as i hated doing that, i miss the heck out of it. I sure do miss my pals from the good ole Thundering Third brigade. How about when our unit set up the Cantina while we were out in the field? I remember one rotation, the brigade engineers where off that night, they came into our cantina and started brawling with everyone. You didn't mess with those guys. I've been to Iraq in 04' and can wear a number of combat patches, but the one I still prodly display on my right shoulder is the tried and true 3rd AD patch.

After 14 years of my ETS date, I still rememember my two years in the United States ARMY with great fondness as they have been a springboard to a successful life in America. My time as a soldier in the the United States ARMY was lived with reckless unappreciation; however, throughout the years after my service, I have come to realize the good that my service has extended to the world… and I hope that everybody who served would feel this way as well… the only unfortunate circumstance is that the 3rd AD was not allowed to finish what (I am confident) they felt was their mission in Iraq… which was (in my humble opinion) the extermination of an aggressive dictatorship by means of force. Not only have I come to realize that I have reason for being proud of my contributions in the years of my service (however insignificant they may have seemed at the time), but I am also satisfied that the my service has been recognized in an appropriate fashion. For instance… my two years of service not only helped me pay for college (by means of the ARMY College Fund), but the years of my service were also intrumental with instilling the necessary motivation to complete this "mission." So… I will now depart from the "soap box" and simply say to all of those who have served/ are serving/ intend to serve… "thanks for your contributions."

Saaski

As I grow older my memory floats towards the soldiers who did the thankless jobs. The mechanics , the clerks and the cooks. Elbow deep in ice cold grease on the frozen fulda plains, waist deep in paperwork for engine parts on a vehicle that should have been scrapped , and eye deep in grease from cooking 3 squares a day for a thousand troops. If not for you third armor would have had no head to its spear. Thankyou all. From an old vulcaneer.

My father-in-law was in the 3rd from 5 Jul 44 to 6 Feb 46. I'm doing research on him for my wife's family. He was in the following battles; Rhineland & Central Europe. He was also listed as being in the following battles; GO 44 and 40 WD 45. I would like to find out what they were. His name was Michael G. Evanochick 33837477. Mike died in 1991. His seperation paper has him with 2 battle stars, but his photos he has three.

I was stationed at Fliegerhorst Kaserne Langendiebach. Outside Hanau. Would love to hear from anyone from the 503d AVN CO. I was the driver for the CO and worked at the gate with the unit police. Met some good people, saw some good places, and had good beer!

Served during Desert Storm. I served my country when I was called back to active duty, yet My fellow soldiers let me down, stole from me, and treated me as if I was the same as the very Iraq soldiers we faught. Yet no matter how I was treated I still served proudly. CW4 CASE THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, you were the only one that allowed me to do my job the way I was trained. And CPT. B Saulter Thank you for treating me as if I didn't know what was going on, plus thank you for not allowing me to go get check out for the health problems I started having While in Iraq /Kuwait.

YET through all my torment over the years thinking about how I was treated I pray to GOD to forgive all those that treated all the recalled troops with so much disrespect.

Hi "Spearheader's' from Gelnhausens Coleman Kaserne:

The other day I was visiting Gelnhausen again, (I have been going home quite often lately), noticing all the changes to the city and of course to the Kaserne. So I arrived from Canada to attend the 50. Class Re-Union ( I never attended one before ) and as I leave the train station and waiting for my sister to come and get me, someone came up from behind and said: Hallo Withold, nice to see you. I was very surprised, that a former soldiers from the late 50th recognized me. I used to work for Wolfgang Fischer Tailor Shop & Dry Cleaning & Military Accessories. As a teenager, growing up next door to the Coleman Kaserne – I lived straight across from Wolfgang Fischer's Tailor Shop – I made a lot of friends from the soldiers stationed in Gelnhausen. Later as I worked for Wolfgang between 58 – 60 I got to know a lot of wonderful, nice guys. I remember the top boxer A. Jones, Golden Glove Winner, who's son became America's top boxer also. The one, who got misjudged in Seoul at the Olympic's – remember! I remember Marvin Elkin, who's wedding I attended later in Ohio. Or, M/Sgt Thompson 48th Infantry with his German Ford Station Wagon. I always will remember the two 'Thanksgiving Dinner' I ate(within hours): First one with Major Hughes and than at Col. Larden's place, stuffing myself with Turkey. Also I remember the many cars I washed and polished with Simonize or Johnson J-Wax for some of the Officers,( it was a thrill to drive these beautiful car around the block! ). Or the bottle of 'Old Spice' After Shave lotion I got from Elaine Larden. ( She was so beautiful ). So many memories go through my mind as a drive along the Herzbachweg to the Gate of the Coleman Kaserne. I want to " Thank You " all for making my growing up during the hard times after the war so much better. From the guest book entries in the 3rd Army 'Spearhead' or the Gelnhausen Coleman Kaserne web site, I read , that many of you had a good time in Gelnhasuen and that many of you take a vacation visit back to this romantic little town. Since 1960, I live in Edmonton, AB Canada , raised 3 successful boys and 1 'Sweetheart' daughter. Never got rich, but live comfortable and content. Yes, North America is a very beautiful place to be. PLS look into my web site: blauenfunken-edmonton.com to find out what I am doing these days. Thank's guys – God Bless you. Regards, Withold/Harald.

I served in 1/48 Infantry in July 1985 to January 1987. I had some of the best and worst times of my life. I truly enjoyed Tanz Park, Irish Pub and Bambi's I enjoyed the cohesion of my unit and liked the training in the various field deployments. I trained with the German Army in weapons courses. I spent my first Christmas with a host family and learned to love the culture. If you served in this time e mail and lets talk. I lost a good friend to suicide in Delta Co, Ronald LaPlount.

I arrived just after Christmas '77 and left just before Memorial Day '80. I worked in the Bn TOC, in the Bn FDC with some great soldiers. Such as SFC McCraken, SSG Stephens, SGT Whalley, SP4s "AJ" Wooten, "RD" Reddick, and others who's names time and too much Applecorn have erased. Also worked with CPT Byrns, the Bn FDO, who is now GEN Byrns the TRADOC CDR! It's great to see one of the good guys make it to the top. I retired from the Illinois Guard Dec '98 as 1ST of C 2/122FA. Would love to hear from anyone that was there while I was.

By the way, the Roman Way Village Housing Area in Butzbach is up on the chopping block. It is only 50% occupied by troops stationed in Friedberg area. Butzbach will take it over in fiscal year 2006/2007, then demolish for new housing, just as they did with the Schloss Kaserne. Spent 2 weeks there a year ago and discussed project with Dr. Dieter Wolfe, Director of Archives for Butzbach and looked at some of the old pics that he has from the 60's and 70's. Good opportunity to go down memory lane one more time. I lived on Michigan Ave. and took some shots last year… Come join us at A3ADV….

I represent a new chapter of Cold War Vet's who served in Germany during the Cold War years. I represent a new hompage-webpage called; The Europe Defense Veterans of America. My partner and I have a petition-on-line called; Authorize the Europe Defense Service Medal. The purpose of this military decoration is to bestow honor upon all of us Cold War Vet's of Europe who are denied recognition for our deployment there. This military decoration is similiar to the way soldiers deployed in Korea received their medal called; The Korea Defense Service Medal. I would like to thank your associations President, Mr. Paul Smith for supporting this new chapter. We need more people to sign the petiton on the Europe Defense Vet's of America or EDVA for short. I contacted The American Legion National Headquarters, A Mr. Mike Duggan about gaining support for this new medal recognition proposal. Mr. Duggan responded to a LETTER I WROTE HIM AS FOLLOWS: " The American Legion already supports a Cold War Medal which looks like it would cover the period you are referring to you. We supported the KDSM because the case was well-documented with all the patrolling activity, skirmishes, and casualties along the DMZ which was also convincing to the Congress. The Legion has no position on a European Defense Service Medal. If you have compiled a factual logging of preparation, patrolling, skirmishes, prepared defenses, etc. for the period you are referring to, we would be interested in seeing it." That is a direct quote of his answer to me. If any of your former 3rd Armored Division soldiers have any evidence to support situations you faced in Germany from about 1956 to 1991 involving skirmishes. border disputes, shots fired, patrolling incidents. etc., please let me know so I may provide Mr. Duggan from The American Legion with some facts about this cause. We are not seeking any funds or donations. Just support for a medal I feel is long overdue for us. You may visit our webpage by going onto www.dogpile.com first then enter; www.edva.us or you may try http://www.edva.us by using yahoo.com first. Any questions or comments you may e-mail me, call me collect at 631-765-6320 or write me at the given address at the bottom of the webpage. Thankyou for your time, Robert DeVito

I was a medic on the "rock" for a year and a half and enjoyed my stay in germany and quite frequently think of all the good times I had. I also wonder where everyone I met is and if they are doing well. I hope this can get me in touch with at least one!

I was stationed there till December 15, 1981. I have been attempting to ascertain what happened to my old Battalion, I think deactivated in the reduction of offensive forces. Battalion LTC Thomas K. O'Malley aka TKO, HHB CO Capt Pete Gibbons, A Btry CO ????, B Btry CO Dunlap, C Btry CO Capt Hal Nylander, SVC Btry CO ????? Smadge was CSM Wilfong. Great memories, great soldiers to have served with from the new cruits to the short timers

I just returned from the reunion and I had a great time. This was my first one. But there will be many more,if left up to me. I was not impressed with how the hotel runs their place, but the stories and activities were great. The program and activities were well planned, and came off smoothly. Mully kept every one in stitches all four days. If you do not attend the reunions I urge you to attend next year in Nashville. I am sure you will have as good a time as I did. See YOU in Nashville. For Chris Smith: 2d Battalion 20th Field Artillery was habitual GS support for the 3d Armored Division, but was not actually assigned to it. Currently it is with 4th ID, but I'm not sure what it's assignment in Hanau was; possibly V Corps or Seventh Army? Not sure.

I am trying to figure out my division, etc.

I was stationed at, I believe, Francois Kaserne on Lamboy Strass from 1988-1989 in Hanau Germany. I was with HHB 2d Bn 20th FA USAREUR.

Was that unit part of 3AD?

Hello "Spearheaders"

I'm a German NCO who had the honor to participate in a PLDC course at Schloss Kaserne in Butzbach in 1990 (Commandant was SGM Galloway). In 1995 I've trained at the "Rock" with 3/5 CAV in order to get the EIB. I've met many good friends withing the ranks like Bob Fox, Tom Brennan, Bubu, Bryan Feser and all the other folks. I still pass the area every once in a while. You wouldn't believe how it changed. In Butzbach is no sign of an US Post anymore and the area in Kichgöns was bought by a large supply company and it's used as a kind of warehouse. If anyone remembers me (back then people called me "POPEYE") feel free to send me an email.

Best regards,

Thomas Korn MSG, GE Army

I especially remember SSG Broman, who was my platoon ssg, while in the 1/32 Co C. He was a good solider and one of the best NCO's I ever met. Anyone knowing how I might be able to contact him please let me know. I also remember all the other good soliders I served with but all my pictures were destroyed a few years back. Anyone you remembers me please drop me a line.

On a Friday night in late November 1963 I was on the top (5th) Floor of HHC 1st of the 48th Infantry (i.e., the first of the stair stepped barracks going up the hill at Coleman Kaserne, Gelnhausen). Someone who had been listening to Radio Luxembourg (short wave) called out to anyone around that President Kennedy had just been shot and killed. My first reaction was to start pulling together my gear because I figured it would be just a matter of time before they started up the Alert Siren, and we’d be on our way to a point much closer than our present 40 miles from the Border. As time passed I eventually went to sleep, fully expecting to be awakened in the early hours of the morning by that “Clear Post Immediately” siren (it had happened many time before).
