i was a medic. i didnt win any medals. nor was i the best at anything but i made some good friends and i miss them. remember the honey buns from Mom's Pizza shack ( between the bowling alley and the front gate )actually it was right outside my window ( 2/32 ). great on a cold night when we all had the munchies ( ill buy, you fly ). the rod and gun club. the class six store.the side window by the motor pool where we got our morning coffee. guarding that damn ammo dump at 3 o clock in the morning during the winter. it was tough back there because there was no jeep to start up to keep warm in while looking for the seargent of the guard. bruce lee movies at the theatre. how many did he make anyway? the coffee that came in the mermite cans when we were out in the field…ugh..drinking flippies….take me back just for a day….a big salute to all my fellow spearheaders….go OUTLAWS

This website sure brings back a lot of memeories. My hats off to all that made this possible. I was a Tank mechanic in this company back then. I would really like to hear from some of my old buddies that I spent time with at Ray Barracks. To name a few there was Sgt Perrson, Shank, Sgt Willie D Patterson, Eric Greathouse (Grady), Ronald Ortiz (Squirrel), Snorkel, Margo, Sgt McGuire, Sgt Rutko, and there are many more that slips my mind right now. If anbody else was in B co during this time drop me a line. If you know any of the above people and can get them a message to contact me, please do.

Glad I found this site…very nice. Was in Ray Barracks when they allowed the draftees from the Veitnam war go home in Dec. 1974…it was a turbulent time for all of us, those like myself just coming in, and especially for all the brothers trying to make sense of it all as they left for home. May God bless all of us…we know we did the best we could.

I just came upon the 3rd Armor Division website and was I very impressed with it. Brought back some great memories of what I now realize was a some of the best times of my life. I was stationed at Ray Barracks in Friedberg Germany in 1973 – 1974. My unit was C Company 3/32 Armor ( " Iron Dukes" ). I was the driver of " C-25" M60A1 Battle tank and held the rank of SPC 4 at the time. When I was stationed at there, the 1/32 and 3/32 were the top two tank battalions in USAEUR Upon rotation back to the states, I went to Ft. Hood Texas,C Company 2 Bn / 7th Cav, 1st Cav Div. I would love to hear from any of my fellow troopers that I served with in the 3/32. It’s been a long time, but I have never forgotten the experience nor have I forgotten what a great bunch of guys I served with. I now live in St. Petersburg Florida

I am looking for all people who were stationed at Bretts, Drake, Edwards or Gibbs Kaserne in Frankfurt between 1960 and 1980 and used to hang out at "Freddy's Bier Bar/Pizzeria" or the "Baton Rouge" right next to it and might know my dad Freddy or my brother Steven, or even myself. And who could forget Tony, the crazy Italian?? If you have any pleasant memories about those places, please drop me a line. Let's reminisce a little.

Is it possible to know the approximately location where my uncle, Staff Sergeant Herman J. Foehrer, Company H, 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Division was killed in battle on September 22, 1944? I have letters from Camp Polk (Aug '41 -May '42), Camp Young Desert Training Ctr. (Oct. 1942), Camp Pickett (Jan.'43). He shipped out to England somewhere around Sept. '43. I have a tissue copy of a letter from his Chaplain who said he died "somewhere in Germany." Would appreciate any assistance. Thank you

Thanks for the e-mails. I will attempt to touch on some of the aspects without over doing things. I realize that a guestbook isn’t intended for expounding on what would appear to some or many as pursuing a personal legal agenda. With that said, here goes. My mother-in-law got ahold of my military mailing address (likely from one of the envelopes to the letters I sent my wife). Unbeknown to my wife, her mother sent a letter to the word “Chaplain” at my military mailing address (of course, she left off my name on the envelope). Note: This was some time after my “interview” by the chaplain as previously mentioned.

As events unfolded, my religious rights were violated (the phrase “let me count the ways” comes to mind, but again, this isn’t the place to go into that). Also, my impression is that the Red Cross did not do well in a situation which had soldier religious rights issues (and potential/or real violations). To the extent it is true, soldiers have a certain amount of “religious rights”. This includes the right to not be victimized by actions taken by officials, based upon their assumptions about the faith content and practice regarding an individual soldier. The right to not be victimized by the undue influence of government officials (or proxy government officials) for whom the soldier constitutes a ward of the government, within the extended total institution of the military, is recognized in the law. Accordingly, an individual soldier’s faith content and practice is protected by the law from unauthorized intrusion. For example, a soldier in an interview may volunteer certain information, but may also not agree to go into certain aspects of “practice” of one’s faith. This applies regardless of whether the soldier, was not coerced to be interviewed; was semi-coerced to be interviewed; or was essentially fully coerced to be interviewed (which of course is a separate issue in itself). Note: Claims of “acting in the best interests” of the ward, the institution, other members of the ward’s family, in whatever combination, are subject to legal challenge, particularly due to the violation of the constitutional based separation of church and state, within the context of interpretations of Faith and Practice analysis by the government officials involved, regarding the subject person or persons involved.

Served with HQ & HQ TRp 3/12 Cav. Was assigned to Ground Survalliance Radar Section. 1SG Hartmam was then 1SG, later he was made SGM at Squardon HQ. They served Chile dogs and snacks at the little snack shop on the way to motor pool when we were there. Do they still have a unit in Budegin? Had a lot of good times while station there. Does anybody remember, Charlie,s Bar, Frog Circle, and I think it was called Lena's.

I left The Rock and went to Ft. Hood only to be placed in the first Task Force team to return to Iraq under the command of Brig. Gen. John Abrahms. I then ETS'd and worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons until 1999 and have been in and out of college since. I am still trying to contact SSG (Ret) John D. "Soup" Supron whom I know lives in Marlow OK but I can't get a phone number.

I remember near the end of the month scraping a few Marks together to buy a greasy pizza from Moms Pizza which was right across the street from the barracks that and a Licher beer. My time in the Bandits is something I can still look back on and feel a sense of comradery and pride, that seems hard to find in this new age. Hope all you guys are doing well. Friedberg was a great little town. I had some good times at "the Glass House". In fact, my only bad experience, was my now "Ex-Wife". Here's wishing the Bandits and the 3AD a long and prestigeous future. Sgt. Wilson

I was at Koleman Kaserne in Gelnhausen for about 3.5 years. I was in the 1st battalion, 33rd Armored Division, Combat Support Company 4.2 mortar platoon Fire Direction Center for most of that time. SSG Willie Hill was my squad leader. (I loved that blue BMW he sold me.) Sgt. Richardson (SGT. Rock) was base gun squad leader. SSG. Benton was platoon sgt. when I got there. When he left, we got SSG. Earl (the Pearl) Monroe. I don't think he liked the fact that I played guitar for one of the 4 or 5 bands on post. All the other members of my band were in 1-48INF (on the hill) and their commander would send a letter to my commander and it come down the chain to Monroe and he would be the one to tell me, reluctantly I think, that I had to go play somewhere. Other good friends I had there were Alberto Perez, William Judd (basic and AIT), Jeff Gunther (basic and AIT), Guilliam, SGT. Colvin and many other Spanish speaking and German friends. Email me at rcj40 at yahoo dot com.

Hard to imagine that was almost 30 years ago! Even after all these years I somehow still sense this compelling need to sweep the motorpool on every friday afternoon! In my home town in pennsylvania they put one of our "short barreled" tanks as a memorial. Brings back a lot of memories when I'm in the area!

What (so-called) “Safety Net” ???

The following is in regard to my four most recent guestbook postings

When I was “interviewed” by the military chaplain he said that a “separation period” of 9 months to a year “would be good”. This position helped him avoid simply dealing with Army policies (however applied, whether by formal or informal means) regarding discretion in authorization of non-Command Sponsored Dependents to locate in the Command.

Later, when I received disquieting news from the homefront it turned out to be a mistake to request the Red Cross Field Director on Post talk to the chaplain.

I would like anyone who remembers the 276th AFAB based at Fort Knox after the 3AD went to Europe in '56, to contact me. We wore the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 3AD. We were equipped with the M52 self-propelled 105mm howitzer. We supported the Armor School, but were not "School Troops".

David is correct. The only restrictions we had were on travel due to out Secret Clearance. The Davy Crockett was an open secret, as time we had to set it for German-American Days, the French War College, and any other VIP's that showed up. I would like to hear from other Davy Crockett member and/or see any pictures of the Davy Crockett that anyone took and kept. Remember the Rock

In response to Raymond Upton's post about the Davy Crockett Section "I understand they were involved with nukes I wondered if they were under orders not to fraternize with the rest of us grunts?" We were not given any such orders. Most of us were pulled from other line companies and in my case and some other members of our section hung out with friends from our old company or "HQ" Co. Most times in the field we were with the 4.2 mortar section My first assignment with the 3-36 Inf. was "B" Company as a rifleman, MOS 111, on B-32 track. Later was switched to B-36 track and was Lt. Harvey's RTO. After a few months and a drivers course on the M113 was transferred to the Davy Crockett section and was told I would be driving one of the sections tracks. Our section bay was on the ground floor of "B" Co. by the end door next to the trash cans. We used "B" Companies Dayroom, And used "Rip" the tailor. Still have a copy of orders for either rifle qualification of "EIB" testing with Raymond's name on the list. Our section had some restrictions on travel which limited the number that could go on leave and/or passes at the same time. Http://www.davesmithphoto.com

For anyone who was there with me, I want to report the passing of a fellow troop and a good buddy back then…….William G. (Lupe) Licata, who went Home in 2003. I talked to his son Chris, and came away from that conversation with a warm feeling; Chris thought the world of Dad. What better legacy?? God Bless ya, Bill.

I always wondered what the Davy Crockett section was all about, the unit seemed to stay to itself, although they were in the same barracks as the rest of the company. I understand they were involved with nukes i wondered if they were under orders not to fraternize with the rest of us grunts?

After I endured the North Atlantic on a troop transport in Feburary 1962 I decided that I needed another line of duty. As I stood outside S-1 in the snow a troop opened up the door and asked, "Does anyone know how to type?" Not wanting to really 'volunteer' I quickly raised my hand. I had become the Company Clerk of Headquarters Company, 2/32. I later moved to S-4 and was that clerk until I rotated back to the States in May 1964. I remember one of the 'hush hush' weapons that we had on post. During German/American open house there sat a Davy Crockett. It was a nuclear weapon mounted on the ground and shot a projectile that looked like a watermellon. For kicks, I located Post Headquarters in the eye piece and took a picture of it in the crosshairs with my 35mm camera. All in all, I had a GREAT experience in my 28 months of duty and made lots of memories and friends.

Although I didn't know it at the time, I miss my time over there on "The Rock!"

It really got to me, how they only had summer for about two weeks in Germany. I remember, in '79, how we had to suspend summer gunnery in Graf because the temprature got over 75 degrees and we were having a drought that caused the brush to catch on fire! We had to stop shooting and go fight the fires.

Lots of great memories from "The Rock". I was in Bravo 2/33 for two and one half years and visited all the attractions of West Germany: Graf, Vilseck,Hohenfels, Frieburg Training Area, and the Frankfurt PX. Left a lot of friends, so if Larry Allen, Sweet James, Tom Arris, Ken Englund, or any others from Bravo Co. are out there, give me a holler!!

I was the HEMITT Wrecker for HHC 1/32AR & HHC 4/67 AR from Jan86 thru Jan88. Capt Seidel was our CO. then. LTC Wheeler was Batt.Com. CSM Dobson was Batt. CSM. BTW, I was in Friedburg 19Feb05. Man, a lot has changed since '88. Got some photos of the place while visiting. I will be forwarding them to the Association when I get them developed. And for ya'll that remember the "Bandit" tank HQ66. The one we used to point the main gun at LTC Wheeler's window on occassion. hehehe! It's still there. But was just moved about 3 weeks ago(on her own power)up to where the Recreation Center is. If anyone remembers me, give me a shout. Later

I was an E-5P at the time. There were 6 of us out of Hanau Germany attached to 503rd support from Ft. Bragg NC. Was a great group of guys even know we were pulled through hell being attached to another unit. We went from about freezing weather in Frankfurt to break a sweat heat when that C5 opened its nose when we landed in Saudi. Hell I still had a field jacket on until that nose opened up. Well if anyone from my 9 1/2 years service reads this, good luck and take care. Was a lot of great times back in the day. God bless America and those who serve.

My father, Floyd H. Pettengill Jr. was in the 3rd Armored Division, 36th Armd.Inf.,Regt,D Co. from June 1944 to November 18th,1944. He was killed in action on November 18th in Hastrenrath,Germany. 60 years later in Noverber 2004, after a few years of research, never giving up, and help by the New York State Division of Veterans Affairs and my Dads best friend Bill Walton, who he inlisted with and went on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge and recieved the Silver Star. My Dads medals which he deserved was given to my family and I on his behalf were the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Eastern Campain Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button. If there is another past proud soldier who know my Dad, please E-mail me at RGP9134@aol.com Thankyou Ron Pettengill

My brother was in the 741 Tank Battalion in WW2. They were briefly attatched to the 3rd armored Division, However they mostly were directly attached to the 1st and 2nd US Infantry Divisions. Do you have any membersthat know or knew of the 741 Tank Battalion?

The 60th Anniversary ceremonies and celebrations of the liberation of Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp take place on April 11 2005. We have been specially asked by the KZ Gedenkstaette Mittelbau-Dora (the camp memorial site administration) to invite officially as honored guests on their behalf US veterans (together with their families and friends) of the 9th Infantry Division, 104th Infantry Division and 3rd Armored Division and attached units which participated in the liberation of Mittelbau-Dora. (www.gomilspec.com) At the same time the new concentration camp museum will be opened. It is of great historical importance because Mittelbau-Dora was where Hitler's terrible V1s and V2s, the original forerunners of today's modern ballistic missiles were manufactured in huge underground factories, which the veterans will visit. Any relevant photographs, documents, objects, etc. given by the veterans will have pride of place in the new museum. A unique, historic and especially moving occasion will be when our veterans and their families meet former Mittelbau-Dora inmates and their families. US military and international VIPs will attend the celebrations which will be covered by the international media. Please email me for further information and tell other 9th ID veterans. Please also tell me of any other websites where I can contact 9th ID veterans.

Hey Gang, In an effort to boost membership in what we believe is the finest Military Organization out there, I'm willing to donate to the first (10) new members, that were stationed at the "Schloss Kaserne" a large 12"X17" Patch commemorating the 3AD at that fine, but gone, historical site. I designed the patch several years ago and had to get permission from the Town of Butzbach to incorporate their “logo” in the patch. After receiving their blessing I had the patch made and have been displaying it ever since, on the back of my motorcycle vest that I wear to most rallies that I attend; including going to “Rolling Thunder” in DC for more then 20 years. Every year I get stopped after the parade by fellow vets, who were in Butzbach, and missing every minute of it. Last October I flew back out to Germany and personally presented the Town with one of the patches, which is now permanently part of the Museum Archives. I spent hours with Dr. Dieter Wolf, their Director, looking over old photographs and walking down memory lane. Anyway, we want new members and if you look at all the entries in the Guestbook we should be several thousand strong. Let’s make it so boys and girls. The low membership fee does not even cover keeping up this web site, if it was not for all the hours the troops are volunteering to keep it going. So if you’re ready download and print the application, fill it out and become a contributing member of the Bad’es Division that walked across several continents. Steve, our secretary, will let me know who are the first (10) to sign up and I will send you the patch, free. If you want to see the patch and are serious, e-mail me and I will attach a picture file with your response. I’ll be wearing it to Bike Week in Myrtle Beach this May and don’t forget our buddies at this years “Rolling Thunder”. Raimund dscinc@qis.net

Served in Hqs Troop from Aug 77 through till Mar 79, as the S-3 GDP Plans and Air officer under Malcolm Gilchrest, then as S-1 for Bill Blake. From Mar79 till Oct 80, commanded B Troop. Blessed with the finest NCOs — 1SGT Gerald Ebright,PSGTs John Morgan and George Sweet, and the finest junior NCOs and young cavarlymen with whom I had the privilege to serve in my Army career.

Command in 1979 is recorded as the toughest time in the recent history of the Army to have had a command, especially at company level — I disagree — the young men in B Troop were among the finest I ever experienced, and it was my honor to have known them and served with them. Too many bad things were written about that time in the Army, especially regarding those of us overseas — dumb, drug addicted, and incompetent; however, in spite of a president who seemed bent on tearing down the military with his "dream" that world peace was what mankind wanted more than anything else and we didn't need a well-equiped and trained Army, and a Congress coming off the Vietnam War holding similar beliefs, both apparently supported by an indifferent nation of people who thought soldiers were overpaid, an unnecessary tax burden, and that overseas tours served only as a great and free chance for us to see Europe — we had drug problems, true, but they were not like they were portrayed in the newspapers, especially for the combat units with border and covering force missions — these Cold War days were extremely tough and demanding times (nothing like sitting in a tank or PC looking across at an armed enemy and knowing that we didn't have bullets), with politically created economic woes and tense Cold War rhetoric — and every politician's answer to the problems being to cut the military budgets — enough ranting — it was an honor to serve with the Third Armor Division and an even greater honor to serve with the Division's only Cavalry Squadron whose members were up to the job, proved it every day, and will always be held in my highest regards and esteem as the finest of America's citizens — Germany was expensive, but it was a great experience, and it provided me with a life-long love of our Nation's unsung heroes — American soldiers who are always taken for granted, seen with indifference and sometimes contempt — until the balloon goes up — then we become the world's best and brighest — Semper Paratus!!

And for the members of America's Greatest Generation — I know you would be proud that the legacy you initiated, and the standards you established — were upheld in the finest of standards by the young men who volunteered their lives to continue the reputations you started in World War II.

In follow up to the most recent posting, I simply overheard the “pro-active” informal story promoting the sending of the Second of the 48th Infantry up the Berlin access autobahn in the Fall of 1962. There were at least two considerations against such an action. The most obvious is that even in the arduous times of the Autumn 1961 Berlin Crisis a “frontline” unit was not picked to make the Berlin journey. Instead, an infantry unit slightly larger than a ROAD infantry battalion (called Battlegroup in those pre-ROAD infantry division times) from the 3AD’s back-up division (8ID) was selected. That unit was stationed at Mannheim, back near the Rhine River; one of its company commanders was CPT David Hackworth. During the international crisis times of the early 1960s it was highly unlikely that a frontline infantry battalion focused on their GDP positions in the Fulda Gap (see Colin Powell’s comments) would have been pulled out of the line for a “show of force” up the autobahn to Berlin. Also, there was only one infantry battalion stationed at Gelnhausen in the early 1960s (the 1st of the 48th didn’t arrive until the ROAD reorganization in the summer of 1963). The Davy Crockett nuclear mortars went with us to the Field on maneuvers in the Fulda Gap. The key however was in having the nuclear warheads arrive from their separate storage site, which was not at Gelnhausen.

The elevated alert level in response to the latter part of October 1962 Cuban Crisis prompted off-the-record assessments in 2d ARB, 48th Infantry Battalion Headquarters (again, these were mostly S2 & S3 staff) on such matters as the presence of, and the potential jeopardy to, U.S. military dependents in such places as the 14th Cav’s posts at Fulda and Bad Hersfeld up near the Border, and the military dependent population attached to the Gelnhausen combat forces. One informal consensus had it that there should be a “no-dependent” (also called “unaccompanied tour”) zone within a strip behind the NATO side of the Border. The proposal didn’t go into specifics; the parties were all Gelnhausen based, so they likely didn’t presume to speak for the situation faced at the 3AD’s other two combat commands, based at Friedberg and Kirch Goens. Also, one of the more colorful stories comparing the Fall of 1962 (Cuban Crisis) with the Fall of 1961 (Berlin Crisis) had it that if the 2d of the 48th Infantry was picked to do a “show of force” up the autobahn to Berlin, “we would take our Davy Crocketts with us.” This was in comparison to the August 1961 order that sent the 1st Battlegroup, 18th Infantry, 8ID (from Mannheim) to Berlin via that access autobahn. The 8ID was the other division in V Corps, and was the back up to the 3AD. August 1961 was approximately 4 months before the Davy Crockett entered the US Army inventory.

As previously posted, my “new guy” interview with the Company Commander took place after my first field exercise. Two impressions stand out from that meeting, both of which relate to the combat mission of the Gelnhausen based troops (only 3AD troops were stationed at Gelnhausen). (1) On the one hand was the relative isolation of the Gelnhausen garrison from the other two-thirds*** of the 3AD’s combat command structure (namely, the other two combat commands at Friedberg and Kirch Göns respectively). (2) On the other hand, there were the crowded conditions of the housing environment for the German nationals. The Army referred to such non-Army involved circumstances as being conditions “on the (German) economy.” Of course, the German housing conditions were not of great significance or importance to the average unmarried GI living in the barracks on Coleman Kaserne. *** This is best explained as follows. Friedberg and Kirch Göns somewhat straddled the autobahn leading north from Frankfurt. Those two garrisons were strategically positioned, whether by design or compromise, to cover the northern avenue of approach leading out of the Fulda Gap, from the Fulda-Bad Hersfeld area, which swung north of the Vogelsberg, and then southwest towards Frankfurt. It then vectored along the base of the Taunus mountains, toward Wiesbaden, with the goal of bridging the Rhine nearby. In comparison, Gelnhausen somewhat guarded the southern outlet or avenue from the Fulda Gap. This avenue derived its name due to its swinging south of the Vogelsberg. This southern route was designated a “strategic corridor” between Fulda and Frankfurt; however, the vectoring would have crossed the Main River on more of a direct route toward bridging the Rhine in the Worms/Mannheim area. (This was somewhat on a direct route along the narrowest east-west area, or “wasp waist”, of West Germany.) Note: My initial orientation to some of these tactical and strategic concepts and evaluations was due to the circumstances of my September, 1962 assignment as a radio operator (Morse Code, RTT) to the Second of the 48th’s Battalion Headquarters, specifically, the S3 (operations) shop. A few weeks later we were in the middle of the USAREUR fallout attendant to the Cuban Crisis (this was in the latter part of October, 1962). My impression was that some of Battalion Headquarters staff were still smarting over the U.S. having to back down (their interpretation) to the Soviets over the Berlin Wall events which occurred in the autumn of 1961. (According to the shop-talk, the 1961 planning included sending U.S. armor up the shortest overland Berlin access route through East Germany.) Both in the field and in Battalion Headquarters on Post I overheard several interesting conversations, and caught peeks at various scale maps, and what amounted to tactical and strategic sketches (a handful). The Field Command Post (“CP”) was built around a combination of the S2 and S3 shops.

Here is some more information on the destruction and construction at Ayers Kaserne "K/G" "The Rock" is going to become "Maga Park Rhein-Main". This site shows the plan and includes an aerial of the place looking west with Niederkleen at the very top left. http://www.piskeundpartner.de/frameset/index_flash6.htmThere is also a live webcam. It doesn't show a lot and not sure where it is pointing but it may be in the Hawk site area. Another site has some shots from the ground of our buildings. http://www.lostplaces.de/ayers/index.html the source I got these sites from tells me there will be a WalMart logistic center for Europe there. They still have to clean up the soil because of heavy contamination of POL.

Those of you that served at Ayres Kanserne, Kirch-Göns will find this site interesting. It has photos taken from a hot air balloon passing over the north of the "Rock" then over the town of Kirch-Göns.( http://www.wrc97.de/Galerie/Ballonfahrt/vorschaubilder/ ) The photos may haven taken in 1997 or later? One can see the roof is being torn off the Gym and the trailers from the Bork trucking company are parked in the motor pool. (http://www.bork.de) One shot shows a group of Bradley's and M1 Abrams along with a few other vehicles parked in our old POL dump by the back gate to the NW. There are also some soldiers around the vehicles. Does anyone know who this unit is? Maybe from 1st AD out of Friedburg? I flunked German and can't figure out it the year is 1997 or just part of the web site. Anyone have any better information on the year these photos were taken?

just looking thru recent entries,CHRIS BROWNE; I know most of the names you listed.I was DAVE MOORE's roommate.room 205(still got the key).I was SSG VAN NORTWICK's(SIR RODNEY) gunner. later i was SSG RHETT RANDY RHODES gunner. took 1st place in SQDN/3rd in DIV. my last gunnery(summer 82).HAL JOHNSON saved my life the winter before. The exhaust pipe fell off my heater on the washrack at GRAF. Went to shut it down(HAL went with me,thank god!),was overcome by CO2,when i stood up to get out. HAL was on the sponson box, seen my arm come out and start to go back in. At that point he grabbed my arm and drug me out. Thank GOD for that BIG S.O.B.. Was in touch with him a few years back, but lost contact. Was there when WANGLER(das heir-international playboy)lost his .45 at the LDA. Me and SKIPPER were guarding the tanks, when the RAD,who found it brought it back. Also remember when DEAN(DEAN-O)BLACK was busted downtown during an anti-american rally with rubber M-16's(he was TNG NCO)in his trunk.Got an originally signed letter from CASPER WIENBERGER calling him a "DISGRACE". A month earlier,he made his E-6 & was given the key to the city of OSSENBORN(?).He & his brother-in-law had found a bunker with three skeletons just outside of OSSENBORN. he was busted only because he lived out there & didn't get the word. Military phones couldn't get out there. I remember REYES(Refry),JERRY MORGAN(Gonzo),DESHIELDS(Spiderman),JESUS ROMAN(Super Rican),Tolliver(The Green Glider),SSG GUY(Gay Guy),CPT HIAWATHA GREEN, But sorry to say i don't remember you CHRIS. I talk about those days almost daily. ahh the memories;Frog Circle,Zur Post, the Schlossmule,Peace Rock. thanks for your time, James(Finkster)Fink "PREPARE TO MOUNT" "MOUNT" Re:"IF YOU AINT CAV,YOU AINT SHIT!" My father served in the 3rd Armored 32nd Tank BN. His name is William (Bill) Brack. I am hoping that someone will read this message that knew my father and will write me back. I have been looking for one of his buddies (Clifford Whetstone) from Ohama, Nebraska. This is the only name besides Wilson that my Mother remembers. I am sorry, but my Mother does not know Wilson's last name. My father passed away in 2000. I am planning on coming to the reunion and hope to find someone there and to hear the stories and meet the HERO'S of WWII and to Thank them.

I really enjoyed my military tour of Germany. Made many good friends, German and GI alike. Would like to return to see the many changes in Frankfurt. The funniest memory I have of Germany was at the annual Oktoberfest. I was feeling somewhat light-headed after my 2nd German beer, when all of a sudden I was crowned by the band leaders hat. It was the first time I ever lead a 10 piece German Band.

I am writing to let you know that one of your brothers has fallen. My Grandfather, Charles D. Pawlak, passed on to eternal life January 29, 2005 at the age of 88. He was a member of Headquarters, 36th Armored Infantry Regiment from 1941-1945. He was awarded the purple heart and the bronze star. I am proud of him, and all veterans. If anyone reading this knew my grandfather, I would love to hear any stories or memories you have of him. There is a guestbook in the death notices section of www.jsonline.com, or I can be reached directly by e-mail at lauramarie_22@yahoo.com. Thank you, and thank you so much for the sacrifices you have made.

Dave, Brent, Cpt. Fletcher, where are you guys? I'm in West Virginia now still employed with the Federal Bureau of Prisons as a Production Supervisor for Federal Prisons Industries. Prayers go out to all of our brothers in arms overseas. Did you guys see Steve on the History Channel? Rolling Thunder, cool stuff.

Now line up those tanks and sweep the motor-pool before you get off of work. I didn't like sweeping very much or pulling AH-HA guard. Oh well, it builds character like guarding the motor-pool without ammo.

Anyone heard from Vanderville, Pena, Solis, Young, Seagrest, Sgt Graves (goodboogitywoogity), Camera, 1sg Hicks, Wills, Berry, anyone from D 4/8 Cav.

Take it easy fellas, contact me if you wish at mhwatson@labyrinth.net

Corporal Schuber passed on Feb 01, 2005, at age 88 still wearing his 3rd Armd Div cap and Spearhead emblazon. Had his original service uniform with all decorations attached draped over lecturn and folded stars and stripes provided by veterans assoc. He was very loyal to the 3rd and countless memories were related to the whole family. Born in Watonga, OK he retired after owning his own bank in Dewey OK for 30 years.

I am posting a note left in the forum by Daryl Gordon,

ATTENTION ALL 3AD VETERANS

A "Proclamation Ceremony" was held by the 3d Armored Division on the steps of the Indiana World War Memorial on July 2, 1955 pursuant to the division moving to Germany as a part of "Operation Gyroscope".

The Association of 3d Armored Division Veterans and the Third Armored Division Association intend to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this event at the 2005 reunion in Indianapolis, Indiana in July of 2005.

All 3AD Cold War vets can trace their time in Germany back to this event that preceded the 3AD's mission assignment in Europe. Let us hear from you!

Daryl

You can register for the reunion on line in our reunion section, or print out a registration form. Lets celebrate the 50th Anniversery together of the 3d Herd Heading to Germany.

I apologize for the confusion. The 1st Bn 48th Infantry didn’t arrive at Gelnhausen until the Summer of 1963 – this was part of the ROAD reorganization. Prior to the ROAD reorganization the 2nd Bn 48th Infantry at Coleman Kaserne was known as the 2nd Armored Rifle Battalion (ARB), 48th Infantry. I arrived on Post approximately 2 years after Colin Powell had rotated. Powell’s first command as a 2LT was in the 2nd ARB, 48th Infantry. He was stationed at Gelnhausen between October 1958 and October 1960. In addition to his autobiography MY AMERICAN JOURNEY Powell is the subject of two biographies: COLIN POWELL: A BIOGRAPHY (Howard Means, New York: Ballantine Books, 1992), and, SACRED HONOR: A BIOGRAPHY OF COLIN POWELL (David Roth, San Francisco: HarperSanFrancisco, 1993). The following is from pages 44,45 & 47 of MY AMERICAN JOURNEY: “My first orders sent me to the 3d Armored Division in West Germany. In that Cold War era, when the globe seemed divided between white and red, I was excited to be going to the front line, with our godless communist adversary deployed just across the Iron Curtain. . . . I was sent to Gelnhausen … about twenty-five miles east of Frankfurt. The Soviet zone was forty-three miles to the east. My unit, Combat Command B of the 3d Armored Division, occupied Coleman Kaserne, a former German army post near the Vogelsberg mountains, where most of the troops lived in modern concrete barracks clinging to the hillsides. I was assigned as a platoon leader to Company B, 2d Armored Rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry, my first field command – forty men. . . . The Army’s mission in Germany was to man the GDP, the General Defense Plan line. The line cut north-south across the Fulda Gap . . . Every piece of artillery, every machine gun, rifle, mortar, tank, and antitank weapon in our division was intended to hit the Russians the moment they came pouring through the gap.” From Means (pp. 101-102.): “Powell was stationed . . . in Gelnhausen, near the border of the Hessen and Bavarian states, on the Kinzig River, less than fifty miles from the East German border, where—so military doctrine held—the ground war between East and West was most likely to begin.” From Roth (p. 48): “Powell . . . was assigned to guard a section of the Fulda Gap in Germany at the focal point of what was expected to be the Soviets’ avenue of attack into Central Europe. The East German border was less than fifty miles away. Assigned to Gelnhausen as a member of the tank heavy 3rd Armored Division, Powell’s team included infantrymen in armored personnel carriers. His first job was as a platoon leader with forty men, initially with Company B, Second Armored Rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry, known as ‘Bravo Company, Second of the Forty-Eighth.’ He later served with Company D in the same battalion . . . Through the bitter cold and biting wind of the winters of 1958-59 and 1959-60, Powell with a jeep and his troops, twelve to a vehicle, sat in M59 armored personnel carriers and looked eastward. They faced the men of the Eighth Guards Army, the vanguard of what was feared would be a massive sweep of Red Army forces.”

I was in the 2nd platoon. Elvis Presley was in the 1st platoon, then was transfered to HQ Co. upstairs from the 2nd. Carl Harmon was my brother-in-law and slept in the bunk next to Elvis. Elvis used to pick me up at the gate at Ray Barracks and give me a lift home in Friedburg. I left Friedburg in Jan. 1959. If anyone remembers me, they can contact me at this Email address. I sure would like to hear from some of you guys.

Wow, never thought I'd find this site. I have so many memories. Brock, Rui, Mike Edwards and the Swanky Modes. The Regina Bar, I would give a year of my life just to go back to the Regina Bar, play 301 on the dart machine and listen to Stairway to heaven. SFC Bauch saved my ass. Garza where are you dude? Corey, McGrath, and Chester, and all the boys from the Zombie Zoo club. The memories I have with you, will last forever. Lisa, it never was. Owens you're a freak. Damn proud to have served, damn proud to have been in Friedberg. God, remember Mesau Guard? Cpl Holloway where the hell are you. Fisher, Navarro and the red light. Temporary billets at the front gate. Crazy freaking taxi drivers. Remember TOP, "and I don't mean maybe" Vanlewvinoff for the CO, crazy OPFOR at FTA. Damn I miss you guys…

“Our mission is to defend our sector of the Fulda Gap” (Part 1 of 3)

My “new guy” interview with the Company Commander took place after my going on my first field exercise. In that interview the Captain said he was impressed with my signal school performance. He briefly explained the significance of CCB at Gelnhausen, namely that we were one of three combat commands of the 3AD, that the East German Border was just up the road a few miles, and that the Border screening unit was the 14th Armored Cav of V Corps at Fulda, plus the 3AD’s 12th Cav north of us at Buedingen. Referring to the defense sector of the Fulda Gap assigned to CCB, he said “we’re it” for infantry. The following are the Captain’s words as best I can recall: “Our mission is to defend our sector of the Fulda Gap, whether we get reinforcements or not.” (He also mentioned that there were nearby combat support units (paraphrasing him) “behind us, down the road at Hanau”.) The Company Commander seemed surprised that I was married, and therefore had only a 24 month tour in Germany. He said that not many junior enlisted RAs were married, although several draftees were. (All draftees’ tours in Germany, following Basic Training and AIT in CONUS, were approximately 18 months, after which they returned to CONUS for discharge. All draftees, whether single or married, served a total of 24 months active duty, unless their tours were extended due to an international crisis. The typical RA enlistment was for 36 months active duty, from Basic to discharge.)

I'm looking for anyone from 3/5 CAV. I pretty much knew everyone from 3/5. And also anyone from the Rock that served from late 1990 to late 1992. We called ourselves the Freak Dawgs and we frequently went to the Woodland Club, the Big Apple, and the Front Gate.

I have many fond memories of the Rock and some that are not so fond! Many freindships came and went. I haven't had the time at this writing to fully review all info that is offered at this site but intend to do so in the near future. I look forward to hearing from anyone that remembers me or anyone that spent time on the Rock when I did. The only name that I recognize is 1Lt Jeffrey O'Kane. He was my CO during my time in Germany. Gods blessings to all!

Newsletter can be picked up in the members only section in the newsletter section. E-mail copies will be sent out this week. Many times, new anti spam programs do not allow e-mail copies to go through. So if you are set up for electronic delivery and don't get a copy in the next week. Either that happened, or you changed your e-mail address. Snail mail copies will go out in mid Feb when they get back from printer.

Also served with the 503rd AG Company (1973-76). Good to see there is an association of Spearheaders! I got my Lifetime Spearheader certificate when I left in December 1976. I first served at "The Rock" with the 2/32nd Armor as a platoon leader. My first brigade commander, Glenn K. Otis later served as Chief of Staff of the division and retired as a four star!

3rd Armored Division was the greatest division I was ever a part of in garrison and during Desert Storm/Shield. CPL Mobley was a good friend of mine that was killed during the conflict and I still miss him to this day. SGT Gilbert was injured while with CPL Mobley… both great soldiers/leaders that I will never forget. May God bless and keep the memories of the Spearhead Soldiers alive.

People I have lost contact with are (By last known rank): SGT Singleton, PFC Lawrence Bryson, SPC Markham, SPC Hazelwood

Just passing through. Sure brings back memories of Ray Barracks and The Rock (Ayers Kaserne), where I had arms rooms and small arms repair shops at both kaserns.

Any brown boot, 122d Ord "Gyroscopers" from Co "C" or HQ & Co "A" (After reorganization) out there? It seems like I made a bunch of trips to "Graf", drank a few "pop-tops", did a couple tours in "Nam", retired and, somehow, fifty years just slid on by!

My greetings and best wishes to the "high speed, low drag" men and women currently deployed. May you'all accomplish your mission and return safely!

I was stationed on Drake Kaserne (Drake/Edwards Kaserne) in Frankfurt, but worked on a small Army Air Field (Maurice Rose AAF-EDEN)in Bonames (a small suburb of Frankfurt) about 5 miles from the barraks. We handled rotary wing aircraft (helicopters) only. I was the NCO-IC of the Communications Shop. In 1977 we became part of V-Corps.

Those were the best times of my life. If anyone remembers me, please send an email.

Anyone out there recall Drake-Edwards? The FfaM places? The "stube," (now a branch bank!) Meir Gustl's, the Dolly Bar, the St. Pauli? I hear Edwards is housing now. Drake is still there. Have you visited the place? I heard there is a subway all the way out to Bonames! Come on gate, communicate! (A little 1940s lingo there!)

I would like to put my 2 cents in on Patrick Lee's comments:  You can say what you want to about President Bush or Sen Kerry, at least they love their country. I was born in Germany and would love to go back and live there for numerous reasons, none of them disrespectful of the United States or it's government. At least the United States allows all religions.*** Your comments as well as Patrick`s have been edited. This is not the place for this.

Wow- great site. I was in alpha company 2/36 inf later changed to 3/5 cav. I arrived in Germany with a handful of close friends as the first wave of soldiers trained as 11M (bradley) to hit germany. After about a week with our unit we headed out for a 60+ day feild training to convert the unit from 113s to bradleys. Crazy stuff for someone fresh in country.

A lot of long nights at the fifty club, miami club (ugh), and the Number One in Lich, and of course frankfurt during the world cup- with the brits burning down the train station!

Feel free to shoot me an email. Anyone know where Jack Seymore is?

I was stationed on "The Rock" in Charlie Battery, 2/3 FA. During my stint there, our gun section was the best there was during FTX for steel on target. Our section was "base piece" not only for the battery, but for the division as well. There are alot of soldiers that I miss from those days at the rock. AIR ASSAULT!

I was driver for Captain Mitchell in 1964. Captain Mitchell introduce me to the kindness of the German people. 1sgt James Allen was one of the old timers. Most of you who were station in Headquarter knows. I stayed on my weekend leaves in a little town call Nidda about 20ks from Friedburg. Pfc.Tiffany I certainly hope you have learned how to drive a car by now. Remember the old VW we put a dent in all four fender. I can still remember the company clerk for HQ Co. the one who almost knot me out in boxing training , thanks for saving my backside the day I left. I wonder how many of you from 1963-1967 assigned to Headquarter/Support Platoon are still around.

What has happend to all the guys from 'COBRA COMPANY' 1/33rd in Gelnhausen during 1961-1964. I have only seen 5-6 sign the guest book in the past few years. I am trying to find some of them so I can get some old pictures from that time, as I had a house fire in 1971 and lost everything I had. If anyone remembers me, I drove for the old man then, ( Cpt. Miller, then Lt. Fisher ). That was the good old days. Hope to hear from someone soon.

Hey Donald, were you at KG? I worked in the post office there. I remember in late 73 or early 74 going with some buddies to the movies on the Rock and one of them streaked the theater. Don't remember his name. Maybe it was you. I guess a lot of that stuff was going on then so it was probably some one else. I almost died laughing so hard. Those were the days. Couldn't wait for them to end. Now wish I could do it again, but not in todays enviroment. Way too serious now. Never was gung ho.

I was stationed in Butzbach (about 25 km north of Frankfurt) at Schloss Kaserne 1988-1990. Last time I went to visit in 2001 it had been turned over to the local civilians and it looked really great. Has anyone been back there recently? I'm currently writing a book on my experiences in the Army and as an embedded reporter in Iraq.

Was in D 3/36 Inf from 86-87 then moved to Bn S-3 as Operations Sergeant from 87-89. In 89, moved to C Company and became 1st Plt Sgt then 1SG under CPT Schafer. 3-36th Inf, later reflagged to 5-5 CAV actually had two halftracks. One was parked outside the battalion headquaters and the other was kept in the motor pool. When I left KG in Aug of 90, both were still in the battalion. I had heard from the BMO, that the one that was operational was actually picked up from the boneyard at Graf were it would have become a hard target on one of the gunnery ranges. Most of the half tracks in Europe were given to the French after the war and later found there way back to the US Army. Best regards to all Spaerheaders. Bayonets!

Thanks Ed Aikens. I received an e-mail from Michael Duke who was in 2-36 Inf until 1987 and he said that the halftrack was still there at that time. Mr. Duke also remembered the 3-36 halftrack as well. If I had a Licher handy I'd flip it open and ponder this mystery.

To Paul Callsen, who was inquiring about the halftrack that was parked at 2-36. When I was there from '77 to '79, both the 2-36 and the 3-36 owned working halftracks, and each year as part of some annual unit celebration, they would race (Timed, not head-to-head) down the main street. The mechanics would work to make their's faster each year to hopefully earn bragging rights. As far as what became of them after the base closed, I don't have a clue, but would be curius to know.

I must say, looking over this 3rd A.D. web-site sure brought back alot of memories to me, (good and bad). I am still very proud to have served in the 3rd A.D. and I will never forget my tour of duty in it at Coleman Kasserne, Gelnhausen. There was alot of history there at Coleman Kasserne. Also, Gelnhausen was a very beautiful town. I will always reflect on those days there. Al Greco. If you are not a member we would be love to have you join.
