LTC Smolenyak was Bn commander when I arrived in Frankfurt. SP Burton was the Col.'s driver. There were no barracks available for me (HHC had no other female soldiers assigned). I was lodged downtown Frankfurt with nurses from the Army 97th Gen. Hospital. (I beieve that is correct). The Col.'s driver had to pick me up daily for the ride to Edwards Kaserne.

Left Schloss Kaserne in 1970, after (2) tours in Germany. Retired E-9 in 1974 @ Ft. George Meade,MD. Went to work for Lockheed Martin in Florida, retired there in 1995. Miss the old days and the travel around Europe, when we were still getting 4 Marks to the Dollar. The Schloss Kaserne was all torn down in 2001, making room for a German Housing Development, the Roman Way Village Housing Area was only 60% occupied from Military Personnel stationed around Friedberg. The Roman Way Housing Area is slotted to be turned over to the Germans by Fiscal Year 2007. If you want to re-live the old days one more time, do it now. It will all be a just a memory soon….. We should have a re-union in Butzbach while we still have something to jog our memories…..

The 3rd Armored Division was the first taste I had of the military and the last (My first assignment was in 1982 until 1984, then I returned in 1990). I was with the Division for it's last mission, Desert Storm, and am proud to wear the Spearhead patch on my right shoulder. I will never forget the people or the Army's Best Division ever established. It made me the soldier that I became and I will always have fond memories of it. Spearhead!!!!

I am here because my father-in-law asked me to look at the site for him. He is a WWII Vet and does not get to the internet unless I take him there. He was 3AD in Europe and is very proud of it. Peter P. Marciano is a proud man still to this day and we, his family are very proud of him.

Listen guys and ladies, let's be honest here. Reality is: Life is short and most of us will never earn a personal entry in the history books. However, by joining and supporting this Association, you are helping to carve out a stake in the annuls of history for something you were a part of. It was something bigger than you, yet, without the many "you's" that made up the lot of us, it could never have happened. It is worthy of note… it is worthy of being remembered. You were willing to do your part then, please, do your part now and join us! The dues are absolutely minimal and the rewards… well, what can I say, I am grateful! Alone the Spearheader Forum is worth it all. For those who are already members, but haven't registered and used it yet – do it today! It's fun, informative, and the more who use it, the greater its potential! I am really looking forward to the joint Reunion with our WWII brothers! As Alex Halley, author of the "Roots" book and series once wrote: "When an old person dies, a library is lost forever" In Columbus, we will be honored to meet and celebrate some "Spearhead Libraries" before they're "lost forever"!

I would also like to get copies of the STars and Stripes newspapers 1961 and 1962. I lived on the German economy while stationed there. Thanks Lauren J. Nofsinger

I Was stationed at Kirch Göins. I have not had too much contact with other guys of the unit over the years. Some exceptions. I was communications Sgt in C company, 58th infantry, 2 ARB. I have returned many years later. It was not the same as when I left it. I have returned to germany numerous times. In fact I was there August 2003. During the hot weather…

I am looking for a newspaper article for the next newsletter. I am looking for something that would either talk about the 3AD deploying to the Middle East for D/S, something talking about General Funk, or something talking about the division during D/S. Please help out if you can.

Enjoyed my time as tank gunner (distinguished – 1967) much more than I did Vietnam with the 101st. Was saddened when Spearhead was deactivated. Now that my son is ready to enlist, he could do alot worse than the 3rd AD. What's the MOS for an Armor Crewman now?

I just seen some pics of THE ROCK that were taken in 2001. Man how it sent chills down my spine. I got so lost within myself while looking at those pictures. I could see myself walking down the streets, which are now broken and cracked. The building just stripped and destroyed. MELO if you so happen the read this…Check your e-mail bro, I am trying to get in touch with you. Shout out to Big Kev, Dave, Greg, Turner, and Starks.

Am looking for some old friends from Swingin' Buedingen. Had some great times with Sgt Jensen, Spc Britten, Spc Rust, Spc Gayhart, and all the other guys in first platoon. If anyone knew Spc Matt Clayback from HHB 5-3 in Wackernheim, he was killed on leave in France back in 1992 or 93. Was a great guy, and I really miss him. I am an engineer now in the Missouri Guard,and am activated at Ft. Leonard Wood for Noble Eagle 3.

As I type this, I find myself with tears…even 13 years after his untimely death, I still remember Dillon (SGT Young Dillon) as if we were together drinking at Marcello's on Lamboy Strauss. Time cannot erase the memories I have, the trip to Octoberfest in '89, the trip to Berlin the same year, the countless drunkfests at Marcello's and "The Boat." Brother, I miss you. If anyone reads this and can get me in contact with Michael Yoder, he should have been with Dillon the day he died, I would be greatful.

Looking for Major Oliver Brackmann. I served under Major Brackmann as his jeep driver. Major Brackmann received a Silver Star and he put me in for the Bronze Star, but I never received it. Does anyone know how to go about this?

I was in Friedberg 72 – 75 with Charlie 122. Looking for any of the old Peezo's. Hope to find Dan Grimes and Jim Nelson they were both good friends. Also I would appriciate pictures any of you may have of Ray Barracks/Friedberg. Hung out at the Zoom and Kings clubs before they were placed off limits. So all you GIs from that time and place give me a shout. Slim

I am not a veteran, but I found a army coat (P.7202 written on the inside collar) with your Spearhead patch in the pocket almost 10 years ago in a basement in a house in Dimondale, MI. I wear the coat every winter and have always wondered about it's history and the meaning of the patch. A co-workers's husband identified it for me and gave this site address. The coat looks about the WWII era. Well, I am so glad I have found such a wonderful history for the coat and patch. My highest regards to all of you. Laurie

The reunion is only a little more than 4 months away. I hope all who visit here will think about attending. This is a combined WWll and 3ad Association reunion. We need a big turnout for the heroes from WWll. We all know that we are growing older,and all of them are older then we are. All the information is here on the web site. My dad was in the 187th Field Artillary in WWll. Am sure many of you have the same situtation. So lets do it for the men who did it for all of us. Dan

I was looking through your challenge coins. I noticed that you have on the 2d BN,33d armor the unit crest of the 3/32 armor. Was the 3/32 changed to the 2/33d. I spent my years in the 3/32 and wore the victory of death crest.

I was in Germany and fresh out of high school when I was deployed to the first desert storm battle and it will be an experience that will stay with me all my life, I'm proud to be part of history and hope that a lot of my fellow company members have gone on to live productive lives. but most of all I will miss the smell and the big boom of the cannon after a fire mission. may god watch over our troops still in battle and bring them home safly.

Am very excited to have been given the web-site info,and am definitely intending to attend the re-union in July.was able to have contact with several fellow troopies after ETS in Jan-'81 but have since lost touch.(life got in the way).Grew up a lot during my time in G-town and a lot of fond memories,but I still feel as if,regrettably,I have unfinished business with some who were very good to me and helped me a great deal.Spent 30 mos in the 1/33 and never had a shot fired at me in anger until I came back to the sometimes mean streets of home,serving as a firefighter in Dayton Ohio. All that fun,travel and adventure and I never even had to leave home.Now I'm the old vet and short-timer here,with just three more winters left before retirement.Uncle Sam Ain't Released Me Yet.

Just visiting the websight. I was with 2nd Platoon BCo 2/32 AR. We were known as the Turtle Platoon in PGW1. I am now a Disability Adjudicator for Kentucky. I was injured in 1995 and medically discharged in 98. Went to college and now working on my Master Degree in Social Work. I still have fond memories of my days on THE ROCK. No other military units have mached the tightness we had there. I still miss my military days and the friends we had there. We have several vets here in the office and we always have our "War Stories" to swap around.

Keep up the good work and "STAY SPEARHEAD".

I was Colonel Nash's Driver, before and during Desert Storm. I noticed on the unit listing for HHC, 1stBde, they show no name for his driver, well that was I, and if possible could I also be included, into the spot for his driver, as I held the highest respect for the retired MG Nash, and our unit. Anyone knowing his whereabouts, or en email address for MG Nash, I would really like to get in contact with him. Thanks, Steven A. Crane

I'll never take my Spearhead patch off!! I've kept in contact with alot of soldiers in my battery/section. This website is truely amazing and it just brings back many wonderful memories. All of the BN picnics, the field densities, battery trips and overall the comarderie. I miss it and will never forget it! Thanks!

I have the fondest memories of this place. I was a specialist at 1/33 HHC worked for SFC Fred D Toms & SSG Jerry Wilkens. Toms was a hardass, but ran a good platoon and Wilk was just my best friend there. I really miss him. Capt Finney was a wonderful CO, along with LT Tom Goodwin and LT Deveraux. If I had only imagined then what I think now I would have made a career out of it and went to OCS. As it is life has been a blessing to me and very good fiancially and with family. I can't wait to take my kids to Gelnhausen and walk up the cobble street out the back gate. Go to the bar down the street we used to frequent. Does anybody know any of the aforementioned men and what happened to them? Well, I have nothing but great things to say about 1/33 for the years 83-85. And compared to SPC Shegog I had the bigger arms, lol!

Sorry, I wasn't in the 3rd AD, it had already been deactivated when I got to "the Rock". I was a Medic with 2/3FA. I miss the Rock, even to this day. I miss hanging out with my "Gunner" pals and "Mom" at the Welcome Inn and the Pommes and Brats at Uli's Imbiss stand. Looking back the time I spent on the Rock was probably the best 2 years of my life!

Hi Everyone:

I was stationed at the "Rock" from 86-88. Does anyone remember 1SGT Tribble? He was a legend. I miss "Licher Hill,The inbiss stand Across The Street, Fliedermaus, Sachsenhausen, Marburg, etc." I have only good memories of the GDP & LDP, Hoenfels, Wildchicken, & Grafenwoer. Where is Maerten? I think he may be in an SF Group. I saw Maibach and we keep in touch, but I have not heard from anyone else. If you were in C 3/36 and you remember me, please send an email. I hope everyone is doing well.

Best Regards,

Glenn Horlick

Seems like the guys in Bad Kreuznach at the main base wore your patch. I was in a seperate hospital kaserne. Plan to visit with my wife in a few years. I was there 1963 to 1965. Your Edwards Kasern entry signs are prominent in the movie GI Blues with Elvis. This led me to search for your kaserne. I thought it might be a phony name.

Thanks for your site.

I just looked at the 2-67 roster and enjoyed a bit of nostalgia seeing the names of some old friends. I would like to see more of the guys on the 2-67 roster. I for one was not there, and I know that there is about 35 others, from the support platoon alone, not listed. If you need names and ranks, I can provide some of them. I would be happy to be of service. Thanks for the site.

An article forwarded to me by my uncle, I thought it worthy of a post.

HONORING THE FALLEN, QUIETLY

by Jonathan Evans

"We receive our dead in silence, far from public view, honoring their sacrifice the only way we can."

There are no reporters on the tarmac at Dover Air Force Base. The public is not allowed to witness the military tradition of "receiving the remains."

Instead, there are soldiers, roused at dark hours to stand in the confines of what seems like a secret as the dead are brought home.

I am one of the soldiers. Nearly every day we learn of another death in Iraq. In our collective consciousness, we tally the statistics of dead and wounded. The number is over 500 now. But none of our conjuring are as real and tangible as the Stars and Stripes folded perfectly over a coffin cradling one of those statistics on his or her way home.

It does not matter where somebody stands politically on the war, but I believe that all who have an opinion should know the cost of that opinion.

When a soldier dies in a foreign land, his or her remains are returned to the United States for their final rest. The remains arrive in Dover, Delaware, without fanfare. No family member is present. There are no young children to feel sad or confused. Just a small group of soldiers waiting to do their duty and honor the fallen.

"Dover flights" are met by soldiers from the US Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment, the storied Old Guard. They are true soldiers, assigned to an esteemed regiment, but it is a unit defined by polish, not mud. It seems that they quietly long to be tested with their comrades "over there," But it is dear to me as I watch them that they find immense pride in honoring their country this way.

Silence. I am a helicopter pilot in the US Army, and it is my job to have the honor guard at Dover at whatever hour a flight arrives. In military-speak, the plane's grim contents are referred to as "HRs"-"human remains." Once the plane arrives, conversation ends. The soldiers form a squad of two even ranks and march out to the tarmac. A general follows, flanked by a chaplain and the ranking representative from the service in which the fallen soldier served.

The plane's cargo door opens slowly revealing a cavernous space. The honor guard steps onto a mobile platform that is raised to the cargo bay. The soldiers enter in lockstep formation and place themselves on both sides of the casket. The squad lifts, the soldiers buckling slightly under the weight. The remains have been packed on ice into metal containers that can easily exceed 500 pounds. The squad moves slowly back onto the elevated platform and deposits the casket with a care that evokes an image of fraternal empathy. It is the only emotion they betray, but their gentleness is unmistakable and compelling. The process continues until the last casket is removed from the plane. On bad nights, this can take over an hour. The few of us observing say nothing, the silence absolute, underscored by something sacred. There is no rule or order that dictates it, but the silence is maintained with a discipline that needs no command.

The caskets are lowered together to the earth, here the soldiers lift them into a van, one by one. The doors close, and the squad moves out. Just before the van rounds the corner, someone speaks in a voice just above a whisper. We snap to and extend a sharp salute.

There are those who would politicize this scene, making it the device of an argument over the freedom of the press. But if this scene were ever to be exploited by the lights and cameras of our "infotainment" industry, it would be offensive. Still, the story must be told. A democracy's lifeblood, after all, is an informed citizenry, and this image is nowhere in the public mind.

The men and women arriving in flag-draped caskets do not deserve the disrespect of arriving in the dark confines of secrecy. But it is a soldier's story, and it must be told through a soldier's eyes. In the military, we seldom discuss whether we are for or against the war.

Instead, we know intimately its cost. For those of us standing on the tarmac at Dover in those still and inky nights, our feelings have nothing to do with politics. They are feelings of sadness, of empathy. And there is nothing abstract about them.

Soldiers don't discuss the politics of war, but they know its cost better than anyone else. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jonathan Evans is a Chief Warrant Officer in the US Army stationed at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, as a pilot-in-command of a UH-60 BlackHawk for the 12th Aviation Battalion. The views expressed here are his own.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"For those who have fought for it, Peace has a meaning the protected will never know."
Would like to hear from anyone else in the Division Honor Guard between 1959-62. I took my wife and daughters to Drake Kaserne in about 1979 and the MP company had moved into our barracks and the Honor Guard had been disbanded. Talked to some disgruntled lt. in Hq. Co. who did nothing but complain about how the volunteer army had gone to the dogs!?!? Sgts. "Hass" Eaton and "Choo-choo" Justice, if you're out there, it'd be great to hear from you. I just retired from 25 years of flying and live at Lake Samish, 85 miles north of Seattle.
Hi..I am the daughter of 1SGT (ret) Castro, C Co, 3/12 Buedingen in the late 60's, early 70's. I was just a little girl then, but have many memories of people and occasions. GEN Mieggs was a LT then and there. And still looking for SGT Aubrey Collins, SGT Muszeowski (sp) to name a few. Dad retired from 3/12, worked the American Legion in Orleshausen for awhile, moved on to Giessen Army Depot, and later the Class V1 in Bad Nauheim in the mid to late 70's and early 80's, until wonderful AAFES took over. I myself was a teen then and bagged at the shopette in BN for awhile, then the commissary along with babysitting. My parents, God willing, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversay this Sept. 11. Would love to hear from some old friends. Any messages can be sent to my email and will be passed on, as they live in Germany on the economy and don't have a computer. My husband was with CSC 1/36 Inf Friedberg, and we were married at the chapel there 25 yrs ago this coming June. Also looking for our old friends, where are you? So looking forward to going back to Friedberg this summer. Anyone still in Germany look us up in the phone book under Dad's name in Friedberg. Be kind to each other.
great page, those were the best years of my life.being stationed in west germany was great.I made all sorts of friends. I was a track and wheeled vehicle mechanic and I drove the M88A1 recovery vehicle.We recieved the M60A1s and M88s around the later part of 1978. When I first arrived at my duty station we had the sheridons and the old V.T.R.s. Hope to hear from some old buddies. Thanks again!!! spearheads forever!!!
I was injured during the course of a 3-day alert along the Czech border near Grafenwoehr in August or September 1959 and spent a total of 7-months in hospitals in Germany (Neaubrucke?) and the U.S. I would like to know more about that alert and will be glad to share my experiences.
I worked as a 36H at the Drake Dial Central Office. When I first arrived I was in HHC 3AD and was shortly thereafter transfered to 143 Signal. If anyone remembers Mr. Heinz Grap from the DCO there, I have news about him. Plus anyone from that period of time Feb 1972 to Sep 1974 that wants to shoot the bull. I've also posted on Dan Ortiz's website, Voice of Iron.
It is nice to see that someone keeps Third Armored Division alive . Any way I see there is not many people from 3/5 cav on this site except for one other besides me. Hi my name is Johnny Violette , I joined the Army in June 89 and went to Germany in October 1989 . I was stationed at the rock for 2 years and then went with them to the front lines of Desert Storm . After the war and we came back , I was sent to Fort Hood ,TX 1 cavalry division 2/5 cav . I then got out in August 1992 and I am proud to say it was Honorable . Fellow 3/5 cav friends , you may remember you may not But I was the guy that was crazy for Marianne Armann . Well I am passed that stage . I am hoping to here from some of my friends (oh the nights of getting drunk in Germany I still can almost feel the hangovers)ha ha . If anyone remembers me and wants to contact me feel free to email me at javiolette8872@aol.com .
I guess Deep Purple said it best in Perfect Strangers: Can you remember Remember my name As I flow through your life A thousand oceans I have flown And cold, cold spirits of ice All my life, I am the echo of your past
I am returning The echo of a point in time Distant faces shine A thousand warriors I have known And laughing, as the spirits appear All your life, shadows of another day
And if you hear me talking on the wind You've got to understand We must remain Perfect strangers
I know I must remain Inside this silent well of sorrow
A strand of silver Hanging through the sky Touching more than you see The voice of ages in your mind Is aching, with the dead of the night Precious life, your tears are lost in falling rain
And if you hear me talking on the wind You've got to understand We must remain Perfect strangers
Scouts Out!
I'd like to hear from anyone in the old group. Anyone out there who recalls the "Holly and the Jolly" (both long gone I hear). I hear the "stube" is now a branch of a bank! Now, that's irony! Also, Meier Gustl's is still there but refurbished and with a new name, something like "Guteselig." Ffam is supposed to be affluent and going vertical. And there is a subway to Bonames!! I think it stops in the old town. Part or all of Edwards Kaserne is gone to make way for affluent housing. Drake is supposed to still be there. I never got back to see the old place. Have you? Anyone remember the banner for Sec of the Army Dick Cheney hanging off the rappeling tower touting "WE LOVE DICK!" as his blackhawk hovered above. The only thing that saved our asses on that stunt was that we had Cpt Hajost in a picture witht he sign. Please email me I live in Seattle presently.
Served from 8/62 until 1/65 as radio operator (S3). Also drove armored personnel carriers (S3) during that time period. Many fond memories. Left Army as Sgt, E5. Subsequently entered USAF, and retired as an E8 SMSgt in 1983. Germany, and the 3AD were always my favorite military experiences.
I have attended two of the WWII veterans of the 3AD's reunions. These are special people who are leaving us all too fast. I encourage all of you to consider attending our reunion this summer. You will have a chance to meet the men who kicked the Nazi's rear ends. In a few years, you will not have that chance because they will no longer be with us. Don't miss this chance, for the first time, our groups are having a combined reunion. Don't regret later in life you passed up on a chance to meet these guys.
I left in 1989 and return in 2004 and visited Gelnhausen. The place has not change and all the buildings are still there. The NCO club is gone and so is the church. They chance the roads, the track parks at the front of the base and across the street are gone. 1/48Inf mess hall is now a resturant. They have turned the unit barracks into apartments. If anyone would like some pictures just let me know and I will be happy to email them to you. Blood and Guts!!!!
Started out in "A" company as a lowly 2nd Lt., after first tank gunnery moved to HHC and Mortar Platoon. After qualifing the 4.2s, I moved to S-2 at company HQ, after a few months moved took over as S-3 for awhile and then moved to Brigade HQ as S-2 for the remainder of my tour. Was a very interesting time in my life and enjoyed the country. Never will forget those early morning "Alerts" and the cold, cold runs up to the "Gap". All was worth it to get to the "O" Club and Friday nights.
Net call —- This is callsign: Vigilant-02 I recall the 100 hour sleigh-ride in the 533rd MI BN, S2 M-577 Armored Command Post, following 1st BDE, COL Nash, across the LZ and into the territory of the Republican Guard hostiles. The Apaches streaked above us. Remember the armored vehicles buried to the turrets. Remember the hundreds of Enemy Prisoners of War. I just returned to the area in 2003 and as an old soldier; I am ready to praise the young troops today who carry on and who have done so much to make the world safer. Kuwait has changed and we are on the right road to encouraging democracy and peace in the region. Always Vigilant! CW4
Sorry if my message seems long, it's just that when I found this page, it set off a lot of old memories. Some of it may be mis-stated due to the time away from it.
I served in the 45th as a Medic (1966-1968). I had just gotten out of school and drafted in July of 66. I trained at Ft. Sam for 3 months and every day we kept hearing how most, if not all, would be going to Vietnam!! We finally got our orders and about 10 of us lucky ones read that were to report to Gibbs Kaserene in Franfurt Germany!! Now for a California kid, I sure as hell didn't even know about Germany, except what I read in my history class about World War 2. I arrived in September 1966 and was assigned to Headquarters Company at first , then got moved to CO. D on, I believe the 4th floor. I took a while getting used to the cold. I was assigned to an Ambulance as part of the Fulda Gap exercises. I remember being called out in the middle of the night to get into a frozen truck and drive about 25- 30 miles per hour to our assigned location. I can't forget to mention the BEER, Brochen, and Bratwurst that we bought for pfennigs. The money was 4 Marks for a dollar at that time and you could buy a lot of Beer and Bratwurst for 5 bucks. The beer was about 60 to 80 pfennigs per flip top bottle. (100Pf's = 1mark) I haven't had Bratwurst in a long time but I remember it tasted damn good with the Beer and Brochen (roll). You could find these Trinkhalls almost any place you had U.S. soldiers. I remember we were at Grafenwhor one year and a bunch of us went into a section of the Bavarian Forest with one of the company jeeps. We went down these roads (or a better name is a dirt trail) looking for some kind of food/drink store. We found this little house all by its lonesome and we noticed the guy had a bunch of Beer logos on the side. We stopped and bought a couple of cases and went back to our bivouac and sold some and drank the rest. I Remember this Beer was a hell of a lot stronger than the Beer here in the states. In the fall and winter, they would brew up that "double brew" beer and that was even stronger!!!
About a year after I arrived, I was selected(ordered) to be trained as a "crew served weapons repairman" I was sent to Murnau, which is located near the Austrian border. So here I am with a primary Medic MOS and a small weapons repair as a secondary MOS. I thought for sure I’d be in Vietnam by the end of my class. We had a friend who had enlisted and ended up in our company. His name was John Burgess. He volunteered (levied) himself for a tour of Vietnam. It wasn't long after, we found his name in Stars and Stripes as one of the casualties. My older brother was in Nam at the same time and I believe the only reason I was not sent was because of him. I know it may not of been true, but that's what I thought. .He was with the Big Red One in Bien Hoa and got injured and soon came home. I also remember the time I was sent on guard duty and my job was to guard the Ambulances from I don't know who. About the only threats we had were either the civilians stealing/trading or our LRP "buddies" fighting in the only Bar Gibbs had!! I do miss the friends made and the lessons learned. Although I was reluctant at first, by the time I left, I was proud to of served in the 3AD 45th Med. My memory of the officers and NCO's is kind of hazy, but I remember Capt. Campbell, Sgt Drury, and I forget the Sgt Majors name, but I remember the butt chewing he gave me for failing an IG inspection. Looking back it doesn't seem like 37 years ago. Some of the guy names were Tommy Coffman from Soddy Daisy Tennesee, Richard Prince from, I believe Michigan. Well if any of you can remember a skinny tall kid from L.A., send me a note.
Jim Del Rosario Spec4 3AD 45med Bttn
I was stationed during 1966-67 in Friedberg close to the great city of Frankfurt. It was a great time to be a soldier. But was better to be a civilian as well. Any B co. 5/5 cav people or 5/5 cav people in general that may know how to get in touch with other people from the unit, please feel free to e mail me with contact information. There are a few of us trying to pull together and see how many people we can contact. If Everyone kept in touch with just one of their buddies, that buddy may be a guy we are trying to reach. That guy may know another and so on. It's been a long time since a lot of us have talked or had contact. I have recently talked with a few old buddies I had not had contact with since the day I left Germany after the war. Let me tell you, It is a great feeling! Also, if you would, please sign in the guest book and give your e mail address. Someone may be trying to get in touch with you! Thanks for your help!
Wow, What a trip down memory lane. I was a Wheel & track mechanic and pulled a lot of guard duty, remember the snack shack down the road from the tank pads, That german lady seemed to come on to every soldier buying coffee and donuts! Watta gal! Remeber going to the E.M. club and getting drunk, going to Frankfurt and cruising sidewalks until train time back to post. Spent too much time changing track and in Graf & Hoenfels. Watch out for sarge looking for us in the canteen! Hah! only name I remember is Jack Ubl. Hope all you guys are OK and keepiing healthy. Sp4 Christopher Dobbs.
Have in my possesion a book that was printed for the third armored division, that has come into disrepair. It had belonged to my father. It chronicles the routes, towns, battles, and lists the troops and divisions that were involved in that time period.Dad has passed away in 1985, he never talked of the war or buddies. I do know that he was a sgt. gunner in a tank that was disabled and he was put in the infantry were he stepped on a land mine and had the back half of his left leg blown away. Very nice web site.
Does anyone know the best way to obtain battalion or company rosters from the 60's? If you have info about what govt. agency to contact, cost, time intervals available (week, month, year?)and what data is contained, please advise at the above e-address.
Bit by bit some of us from 2/36 Inf. are rebuilding communication but some of the names are forgotten. (If you were there, then you understand!)
about the funniest thing that happened. when we were at Graf. we made head lines on the stars and stripes and the over seas weekly, more commonly knowened as the over sexed weekly. Any ways it was dry that summer at Graf. the tracer rounds set off a good sized fire down range, about 1 hour later we had one hell of a forest fire on our hands. the winds kicked up and man oh man. we talking SERIOUS Forest FIRE!! any ways wen we as a troop would screw up roraly we were known as Dildo Troop! James Transu gave it that name. also remember, Steve Carpe, My self Dale Smith ,Shannon, Hartung ,Martin. are some of crew chiefs i remember Robert Huston in equipment support, Allison & James in Avionics. SSG Cox And top SFC Clark. on my birth day he woke me up at like 5 am. handed me his bottle of Jim Beam "have a drink birthday boy!" we ast and chatted and got to know one another a lot better. and gave me the day off. No Shit! every one else is freazing off ther go-nands out side in a company formation. I was off duty thanks to Sfc Clark ,making stupid faces at guies below. i all most got in hot water for that. Sfc Clark where ever you are Hear is a toast to you my friend, SHEEERS & BEERS!
Just saw a car bumper sticker the other day with the above WEB address. My uncle Pvt Roy G. Harden was KIA during WW II at the age of 18, while serving with the unit over in Italy. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetary. I have some basic info about his unit and the location they were at when he was killed. Was hoping I might be able to find a survivor or survivors of his particular unit, to perhaps find out some more details. Thanks
"First to Fire", "If it flies it dies", Medics lead the way! I was the medic from California. Being a medic in any unit is great, being a medic for 3-5 ADA makes you the best. If any of the medics are still out there, if you served in 3-5 ADA & knew me, or you know where to contact any of these people (David Erickson, Jim Whitfield, Eric Smith, Jessie(The medic from Texas), or SFC. Tarzwell…, please give me a call. 307-632-0050. It would be great to hear from the best soldiers I ever served with again.
Hello gentlemen, Just wanted to say hello and see if any people from my old unit were out there. Hope everyone is doing well. Drop me a line. I would be curious to get in touch with an old girlfriend. Her Dad was in a unit in the 2nd brigade(I can't remember which one). Her name was Heather DeVought and her Dad's was Frank DeVought. I appreciate it.
Trying to find out what happened to PFC Tracy Brannon. PFC Brannon was assigned to B 45th Armament Section as a 45G (Fire Control Repairer) just days before deployment to Saudi. Once in the desert my Armament section was split up into two separate sections. As the NCOIC I took six soldiers and was assigned to the 2nd BDE R-3, and PFC Brannon stayed with the main support cell in what was called the "Fat Lady" To try and make a long story short soon after we re-deployed back to Coleman Barracks there was a weekend Barcelona Spain Bus trip that PFC Brannon and others went on. When it was time for the bus to depart Barcelona back to Germany the local Police stopped the bus and pulled 3 soldiers off, PFC Brannon being one of them. A woman on vacation from Amsterdam had made a Rape Complaint and the 3 soldiers pulled off the Bus fit the attacker’s description. This news hit fast as soon as the Bus returned to Coleman without PFC Brannon and the two other soldiers. In 1991 the US didn't have a full SOFA agreement with Spain and there was little the US military could do from a legal standpoint. The two other soldiers were soon released and allowed to return to Germany. When they were released that is just what I mean, let out on the streets of Barcelona and told you are free now. I guess they were pretty resourceful as they hitched rides to a US Air Base about 200 miles away and made it back to Germany. At this point the only information we could get on why they were holding PFC Brannon was from a US Air Force Legal Officer that the Spain authorities would allow PFC Brannon access too once a week. About 60 days after the "accused" rape the US Army and the Spain authorities allow PFC Brannon a visit by myself and the B Co 1st Sergeant (SFC Ayala). I can truly say that the area they were holding him in wouldn’t be on any tourists “must see list”. Since SFC Ayala could speak fluent Spanish he did all the communication with authorities. At times during their conversations I felt helpless as SFC Ayala would pause and translate what was going on. With no SOFA agreement these guys knew they didn’t have to let us see PFC Brannon. After what seemed like forever they finally agreed to let us see him. When PFC Brannon came out they still had him in the same clothes that he had on when he was pulled off the bus. It was a bittersweet moment as he was glad to finally see someone he knew, but we had to tell him they weren’t letting him come back with us. We sat there with PFC Brannon and he told us of all the details of the events leading up to his arrest. I won’t go into these details but I can say there is no way this guy had anything to do with what they were holding him for. A local official even told SFC Ayala that the physical evidence taken from the woman and PFC Brannon proved he was not the man they were looking for. When we left the official “word” on the disposition of PFC Brannon was this; by Spanish law the Amsterdam woman would have to return to Spain within 90 days of her report in order for them to prosecute him. At this time he only had about 30 days left, if she didn’t show they would release him. Knowing this, PFC Brannon now had a date and something to look forward to. We took his “wish list” of needed items with us and truly expected to see him again in about 30 days. At the 90-day mark the Amsterdam woman hadn’t returned so the Chain of Command started pushing for his release through the in country US Air Force legal office. Bad news, the local prosecuting attorney decided this case would help make a name for himself, so he was going on with the prosecution in accordance with Spanish law. More bad news, in the Spanish court system it could take months for a case like this to make a judges docket. So now here we are, the 3rd AD is deactivating, units are breaking up daily. Some soldiers are staying in Germany, some returning stateside. By December of 1991 45th FSB is down to less than 75 or so soldiers. PFC Brannon’s communication line back to the unit he was assigned to is about to dissolve and later that month I was assigned back to CONUS. After full deactivation of the 3rd AD his direct connection with the military remained with the Air Force. I soon lost my point of connect with the Air Force and thus, lost my communication with PFC Brannon. To this day I have yet to find a definite answer on what happen to PFC Brannon. After the original Air Force Officer dealing with this situation left Spain I could no longer get information on him. Other efforts also proved to be fruitless. The Armament field is a very small part of the 63 CMF, and most everybody knows each other. None of the soldiers, NCO’s and WO’s has ever heard what happened to this soldier. This guy was a good young man caught up in something I believe he had nothing to do with. Are there anyone out there who can help me?
I was stationed in Gelnhausen on the hill.
Was the Batallion Commanders driver. While we were engaged in Winter Reforger the weather turned warm and rainy. The operation was halted in place so we would not dammage the landowners property with the heavy equipment. While stationed in Germany, my wife became ill and I was granted a Compassionate re-assignment… Not there very long, but it was a part of my life I won't forget
I'm writing this for my uncle, Elmer Oakes, who served in the 3rd Armored Divsion in 1944-45. He's still living in Chesapeake, Virginia, for anyone interesting. He says his unit was first across the bridge at Remagen. Don't know for sure, but perhaps, someone could confirm this.
Great site!
Hello, I´m from Germany and I´m searching for my Boyfriend´s father. He lived from 1978-1982 (?) in Coleman Barracks – Gellnhausen, Germany (CCB/2D Brigade), but he went back in the United States before my boyfriend was born in 1982 or some time after, I´m not sure. Unfortunately, my Boyfried doesn´t know really much about him. He knows that his friends called him "Diaz", so his last name could be Diaz or Rodriguez or something like that. For the first name there are possibilities like Amando (very probably), Ramon, Juan, José. It could be that he has more than one first name. If there is anybody who remembers him or knows where i can get help , please let me know. Me and my boyfriend would be very grateful to hear something about him.
Since I first found this site I've looked for more of my brothers in arms. I will start e-mailing anyone from the 12th. We were brought together by a moment in history that we can never forget,a time that has made an impact on many lives even now. Still we have to remember the Great times we had in Germany-Dexheim,BK,Mainz,FRANFURT!!!!! Sacsenhauen, ah who can forget Maria's in Neirstein and her famous schnietzal's & pomme frites(with your favorite toppings)
Dear Sir,
The website looks great! It would be even better if the website could have video clips too!
Thank you.
I have recently come across an Infantry Drill Manual dating from 1906. It belonged to a Claude H Dewey from D troop 13th Cav Ft Riley Kansas. I am interested in finding out more about the units history.
