In case you didn't know, the Voice of Iron website has items with the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 143rd Signal Battalion, and the Voice of Iron "World Tour" logo, available through Café Press.

The items in the store are original and cannot be found elsewhere. Bearing a brand-new digital update of the original design from the 1940's with much more detail, these items will catch the attention of co-workers and friends.

Wear a DUI shirt for Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, and let everyone know you were a Signal Soldier. Raise a toast to lost friends and those that are far away in a 143rd Signal Stein.

Link: http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=143rdsignalbn

—————————————————- Due to the unit's shutdown in 1992, our history has been packed away, until the day comes to hear from the Voice of Iron again. Please visit the store and keep our memory alive.

Vox Ferrorum,

Dan Ortiz SGT B Co. 143rd Sig. Bn. 1987-1991

Had an ISP change so figured I'd better get the new one on here. The guestbook is sure filling in – more activity on this one than any I've seen. I tried to calculate the number of people who would have served in the 3rd AD since it re-activation in 1955 and came up with probably 250,000 – 3000,000. Anybody got any good guesses on the subject count?

I had no idea that anyone had created such an awesome website until I was simply surfing the net. Thank you for creating it! I think that it is so important to preserve our history. I enjoyed so much going through the list of names and remembering those that I proudly served with!

Spearhead!!! I signed the guestbook a while back and must have inadvertently indicated I was in B Company. The fact is I was the A Company Commander from May 1991 until April 1992. I had the pains and pleasure of being the last commander of Alpha Company and was charged with drawing the unit down. To the soldiers who served with me during my short command, I salute you! I miss each and every one of you. You were the best in the Battalion; true professionals, and great people. I retired from the Army in 2001 and now live in Maryland, just outside Washington, DC. If any of you are ever in the area, please look me up. I look forward to receiving emails from all of you. Take care and be proud of your service to our nation.

I transferred to the 3rd Armored Division in the Fall of 1966. My first duty assignment was with A Company 1st Bn 33rd Armor as a track and wheel vehicle mechanic with a duty assignment of jeep driver for 1LT John Longfellow, A Co Commander. Our 1SG was 1SG James Rogers. The BN Commander was LTC McFadden and his driver was PFC Robert Thompson.

In Feb 1967 I was driving for 1LT Joseph A Dyson (A Co Commander) when I reenlisted and was given the enlistment oath by our new BN CO, LTC Roland D Tausch.

When I transferred from A/1-33 in Feb 68, CPT Arthur C. Hester, was the CO. By that time I was SGT E-5 and Tank Commander of A-15.

The preceding information was extracted from copies of official documents I have kept over the years. Hopefully it will help you with your Commanders Rosters.

I arrived at Ayers Kasern in Dec 1971 and left June 1976 would have stayed longer but Dept of the Army said I couldn't extend anymore because I had been in Germany too long. My Co's were Capt.Templer and Capt. Thurman. 1st Sgt's were 1st Sgt Cooper and 1st Sgt Britt. I think we had a SFC Strong acting for a while as 1st Sgt. Any one who remembers these guys give me a email. Also I called Maynard Goodspeed in New York after I hadn't talked to him for over 30 years He freaked. We need to have a place where we can post then and now pictures. It be fun.

For the record, LTC Bernard E. Meurrens was the Division Provost Marshal from 1977 – 1980 when he rotated to an assignment in the LE Division, ODCSPER, The Pentagon. The Division CG was MG Walter Ulmer.

I was LTC Meurrens' Deputy Provost Marshal from 1978 – 1980 when I was selected to return to Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

My fondest memories are those in the field and our partnership with the 5th Panzer Feldjaeger motorcycle platoon attached and the early morning motorcycle rides to "recon" outlying MP platoons in support of the Division.

I noticed your remarks regarding the combat infantry badge and the proposed comabt artillery and armor badges.

In 1943 Life Magazine published an article about the new badges the Army developed to recognized combat soldiers. This article shown all three combat badges. The Combat Artillery badge was similar to the Combat Infantry Badge, but had a single cannon in place of the rifle on a red background. The Armor Combat badge had a WW I tank over a yellow back ground. Only the Infantry Badge was eventually approved for reasons unknown to me. Recently there has been talk about instituting the Combat Artillery and Combat Armor badges, but unfortunately it appears the issue will also be killed.

—–Original Message—– From: webmaster@veteransforcommonsense.org [mailto:webmaster@veteransforcommonsense.org] Sent: Sunday, June 01, 2003 11:15 AM To: webmaster AT voiceofiron.com Subject: Veterans for Common Sense Action Alert

Dear Members and Supporters of Veterans for Common Sense:

On Monday, June 2, the House Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations will hold a key hearing impacting Gulf War veterans from 1991. The General Accounting Office is expected to testify Monday that the Pentagon and CIA used a flawed computer model in identifying the soldiers downwind of the Khamisiyah plume, which exposed more than 100,000 Gulf War veterans to low levels of chemical agents.

This hearing is critical for veterans who served in the past as well as those serving in the Middle East today, as it goes to the heart of routine Pentagon denials of health threats to the troops. Therefore, Veterans for Common Sense asks you to take the following actions prior to the hearing on Monday. Remember: our membership is small, and every phone call counts. Your ten minutes of help on this issue is key to getting the truth out.

Following is the action we need to take:

1) If you live in the Washington area, and can take part of the day, please attend the hearing, or at least part of it. Details on the hearing and its location are listed below.

2) Contact the following press outlets and ask them to cover it:

a) The New York Times: call 1-888-NYT-NEWS and ask them to cover the hearing. Follow up with an email to: nytnews@nytimes.com

b) The Washington Post: call 202-334-6000 and ask for the National Desk. Follow up with an email to the National Desk editor at: national@washpost.com

c) CNN – Call 202-898-7900 and follow up with an email: cnn.feedback@cnn.com

d) Select on or more of your local media — television, radio or newspaper, and call them and ask them to cover it.

These four phone calls could make a very substantial difference in the media attention this issue receives. Please don't wait.

If you would like to attend the hearing, following is information:

SUBCOMMITTEE ON NATIONAL SECURITY, EMERGING THREATS, AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Christopher Shays, Connecticut, Chairman Room B-372 Rayburn Building Washington, D.C. 20515 Tel: 202 225-2548 Fax: 202 225-2382

Subject: Khamisiyah. Briefing Memorandum for the hearing, Following Toxic Clouds: Science and Assumptions in Plume Modeling, scheduled for Monday, June 2, 2003, at 1 p.m. in Room 2154, Rayburn House Office Building.

PURPOSE OF THE HEARING

The purpose of the hearing is to examine the strengths and weaknesses of current methodologies to model the spread of aerosolized biological, chemical or radiological agents.

HEARING ISSUES

1. To what extent are conclusions drawn from DOD and CIA models valid and reliable regarding the dispersion of the plume and exposure to U.S. forces during the 1991 Persian Gulf War?

2. What are the strengths and limitations of current biological, chemical and radiological plume modeling?

****************

** Note ** From 1991 to 1995, DoD denied any US service members were exposed. In 2002, DoD confirmed as many as 145,000 US service members were exposed at a single incident at Khamisiyah, Iraq, in March 1991, when US troops destroyed an enormous Iraqi arms depot.

Nerve Gas Exposure in Iraq in '91 Probed

By SUZANNE GAMBOA c The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) – The government miscalculated the number of U.S. troops who may have been exposed to nerve gases when Iraqi weapons were destroyed during the first Gulf War, congressional investigators say.

The General Accounting Office is expected to testify in a House hearing Monday that the Pentagon and CIA used a flawed computer model to estimate the fallout from the weapons. The models were created with inaccurate data, and the height of the plume resulting from the 1991 weapons explosions was underestimated, according to a memo sent to members of a House Government Reform subcommittee.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the memo Friday.

The data indicate that initial reports that about 100,000 troops were exposed were wrong. The memo doesn't say whether more or fewer troops were likely to have been affected.

“We shouldn't be making policy by relying on that modeling,'' said Larry Halloran, a spokesman for the National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations subcommittee.

The GAO finding is sure to reverberate among Gulf War veterans and their advocates, who have said the exposure to the weapons' gases was one cause of mysterious illnesses among many veterans. Advocates also will use the testimony to argue for health care and compensation for veterans within a certain radius of the weapons explosions.

Veterans of the 1991 Gulf War have suffered from illnesses they believe are linked to their service in Gulf. Among reported symptoms are chronic fatigue, diarrhea, migraines, dizziness, memory problems, loss of muscle control and loss of balance.

“We have to presume that the illnesses the veterans have are related to that exposure. We have to lean toward the veteran,'' said Steve Robinson, National Gulf War Resource Center executive director.

The findings also could have implications for research on illnesses reported by Gulf War veterans. GAO concluded that epidemiological studies that relied on the computer model would be invalid.

A Pentagon spokesman reached Friday would not immediately comment on the findings.

U.S. troops destroyed ammunitions caches in Khamisiyah, Iraq, on March 4 and March 10, 1991. Some of those weapons contained sarin and cyclosarin, two nerve gases.

The Pentagon has said more than 100,000 soldiers were exposed to low levels of nerve gas when the weapons were destroyed in Khamisiyah.

The computer model used was developed by a panel of experts convened by the Department of Defense's Institute for Defense Analyses. The panel used several computer models and combined them to make up for the lack of onsite measurements of chemical exposure and local weather data. But the GAO found the models had differed greatly on the size and path of the plume, the congressional memo said.

GAO found that the Pentagon did not have accurate weather data to model Khamisiyah and that made determining the speed and direction of the plume difficult, according to the subcommittee memo.

Monday's hearing, to be led by Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., is designed to examine computer modeling's validity in tracking biological, chemical or radiological substances. The National Research Council will release a report on plume modeling, Halloran said.

“The lessons are that at least with the current state of science, (computer modeling) is particularly ineffective for any retrospective analysis,'' Halloran said. “You need data collection that will allow you to eliminate all kinds of variables so you can warn people where (the weapon's plume) is going.''

After working as a radio repairman I became commo chief of Co. A from early 1969 until Feb. 1970 in Gelnhausen. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. My girlfriend and I visited Gelnhausen in April of 2002 for two days. We had a great time and I would gladly pass on our experiences to anyone interested.

I was in the 503rd CAB at Fliegerhorst then I went to the 502nd CAB at Fort Hood. Wow…I'm feeling old. Both the 3rd AD and the 2nd AD have been retired. I just found out today that the 2 AD became the 4th Infantry Division. I was an Aircraft Electrician and worked on AH-1S Modernized Cobras mostly. I'd like to here from any of my ole Army Buds. My grandson is doing a paper in 7th grade Social Studies about the role of tanks by the WWII. It would be very helpfull to him if a 3rd Armored veteran could provide him with first hand knowledge of the attributes of the Sherman Tank and it's role in the outcome of WWII. My grandson's name is Rick Chafa and his E mail address is tigger143@earthlink.net .Unfotunately he has very little time to complete his report and he needs info by 5/14/03 PM so he can complete his work by 5/15/03.

Respectively,

David Daniels

Remember the baked goods in the hallway after each field trip.

The Cookie and Sue would sew on patches every month in the XO's office.

Capt. Humphrey and 1SG Workman hung stockings full of candy on everyone's bunk at Christmas. The wives club sewed and stuffed them all.

The Division Band playing at the railhead while we'd be off-loading the vehicles.

The smell of sugar beets in the back 40.

i arrived on the "rock" january 4th 1979. i pcs'd 15 december 1980. i was in the 3rd platoon, charlie 35 was my "track". best damn crew in the platoon. my last two months on the rock I was cpt. mandarinos's driver. To anyone out there who served with me, I just wanted to say hello. I have alot of great memories on the "rock" and some not so good. I served with the best damn tankers in the 3rd AD. I will never forget them. Some might remember myself and a fellow tanker named Tom Defazio. A damn good soldier but a real pain in the ass to our Top and C/O. Tom was killed in a auto/motorcycle accident back in 87'.

Fricks were two of my Company CO's during my 3 years (1970-73) with the 3/33 Armor (Pickles). LTC George E. Taylor, and LTC James A. I was stationed at Friedberg from 1961 – 1964 in both A Co. and HHQ Co 1/36. I was first in A company in the 2nd platoon for my first year, and then I was reassigned to headquarters company support platoon. I met and married my wife in Friedberg and still happily married after forty years.

Had a lot of fun in the Florida Bar in Bad Nauheim and the Oasis in Friedberg. Spent twenty years in the Army with service in Vietnam. I retired in 1981 from the Army, and spent the next 23 years as a Government employee with the Defense Department. I hope all of you had as much fun in Friedberg as I did, and all the years after that….

Wish all of you a wonderful future…. Glynn P. Lyles

I served at Ray Barracks from May 82 until Oct 83. I have some very good memories from then and all the guys I served with in 2nd platoon. I can't remember all their names but a few are Dieckman, Rheinberg, Spanader, Sherman, Gantz, Roff and many more. I always look back at all the pictures I took while there. If anybody served in the same platoon, contact me. I really like to hear from some of you. Thanks

I enjoyed the pictures and history of this site. Too bad the battalion is gone. Hopefully, it will live again…BANDITS/RED LIONS!!!!

I spent 2 years w/ the 122nd Maintenance Battalion stationed at Fleighorst. Capt. Woody was my Company Commander. Fond memories of Winter in Graf where I in charge of a range field maintenace position repairing the searchlights that were above the 105mm gun barrels. The 1st Lieutenants used to show up on their tanks at all hours of the night begging to have their searchlights repaired. I was proud to have served.

To All: Ray barracks,Freidburg. Who remembers the Fillwood? man I was rockin that place almost every night. Then for a break I whorawed the Black Inn. Traveling around in my V.W. van I was on a roll. Stopping off in small towns, I fell in Love in Lich. Beer tents, Imbis stands, Fests oh ya, I did'nt miss a one. But, the best kicker was "The Running of the Bulls" (1980) in Pampalona Spain. First time I doubled down with two seinoritas! The concerts there Rocked, AC/DC, Scorpions, Status Quo, Queen, Led Zepplin, Judas Preist, Nuggent, Winter, Molly Hatchet, The Who, just to name a few. And yes I was in the army too. At first on a tank crew, moving up to (Sgt.) tank commander. Distinguished my tank 3 times. I attended NCO academy, made Col's orderly numorus times. I am a veteran of "7" grafs, 4 Hohenfels, 3 Wildflickens, Reforger 79, and a few trips to Fulda. I was rewarded with the "mastersham" job of NCOIC of the units MOS Learning center my last year. My own jeep driver picking me up each morning (9am) was a little too much. Hope you guys had half the memories I do. (target, cease fire.)

I served with the "C" Btry – 509th in May 1956 at Fort Knox, KY and moved in 1956 with the division to Hanau, Germany. The 509th later changed to the 73rd Arty. If anyone served in "C" Btry during that period, I would like to hear from you.

Some names of individuals that come to mind that I served with are as follows:

Robert Shacket(sp?) – Served as Chief of Firing Btry Lt. Towle – Btry CO 1st/Sgt Brooks

Also, I would like to hear from any individuals in the 509th/73rd Atry, especially all of the supply personnel.

While stationed in Hanau, I lived in the Sportsville Housing Area.

You can reach me through my e-mail address or at the following address:

1100 Anderson Dr. Leesville, LA 71446

Thanks.

My father, Charles Trantanella Jr, was in C Co, 122nd AOB from 1956 to 1958. In a few of his letters, he mentioned that the Army had taken photographs of C Co. in or around June, 1957. Does anyone happen to have a copy of this photograph? I'd be most interested in a digital scan of this photo to include as part of a family history project I am putting together based upon my father's experience as a soldier. My father passed away in 1987, and though he left behind many of the letters to his parents that he wrote while in the Army, I have been unable to locate more than a few random photographs. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at: tranti@world.std.com

Team Whiskey, was the name of the lead element of 4-18 Inf Bn (2d Bde 3AD) during Desert Storm. Team Whiskey was made up of a company of tanks (minus one platoon held as the Bn reserve), an infantry platoon (from B co 1st plt, my unit), a heavy engineer platoon, and some other high powered slice elements. There is not much mention of these ad hoc task force teams that were put together during the fighting part of Desert Storm. I think all the guys in our infantry platoon who were attached to this tank heavy team were pretty happy with the situation. The whole team worked together very well. Being up-front in the Bn march acroos Iraq got very interesting too. The Cdr of the tank company was a very good CO. I can't remember the names or unit designation of this tank company (it had to be a unit from Gelnhausen 2d Bde), or the other slices that made up Team Whiskey … but if anyone was apart of this team, or anyone of the fellas from B 4-18 Inf care to drop me a note … that would be a welcome sight.

Hello

I just received this request & thought I would post it here in the guestbook for any DS veterean who may want to respond.

Kevin

Hi,

My name is Mike Luo, and I'm a New York-based national correspondent for the Associated Press. I'm looking for some Gulf War veterans to profile for a story. Specifically, I'm trying to find a group of friends, perhaps from the same tank, or the same unit at least, and weave together their respective stories on dealing with the aftermath of war. It's supposed to tie into the wrapping up of the current war in Iraq. The concept behind having a group from the same unit is to have a backbone to weave the stories together, a common starting point. I'm interested in things like transitioning to civilian life, trying to explain the carnage of war to a public that got a sanitized view of it on tv, dealing w/ the memories, etc. I do longer stories and projects for AP, so I'm not looking to do a short 500 word story. I'm looking to spend some time with people. No hype. Just tell the story sensitively and well.

My problem is I didn't know where to start. I decided to look for alumni pages associated with any unit that fell under the VII Corps because I wanted soldiers that saw ground war combat. I fell upon the 3rd Armored Division's page b/c it seems the best organized. I'm not sure which brigade is best, for instance, and which unit to try under that. Perhaps you can point me to people, or suggest where I should look.

Can you help me out? Drop me a line, or call me at 1-800-845-8450, ext. 7589.

Thanks,

Mike Luo — Michael Luo National Writer Associated Press 50 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10020 mluo@ap.org 212.621.7589 (direct) 212.506.6781 (fax) 866.421.5172 (numeric/text pager)

It is great finding out about this website. I was a Bradley Driver during my enlistment in Friedberg, Germany. Watching the coverage of the war in Iraq sure does bring back some memories of Desert Storm. I hope and pray that those soldiers make it back home soon. They have done an awsome job out there. I am also happy to know that the POWs have been found and that they are on their way home. It is great to see the names of old Army buddies on this site. I was in a Scout Platoon surrounded by a bunch of "tankers." It sure was fun. Auf weidesen, scouts out.

I was a Scout in the scout platoon and I have good and bad memories of my time in Germany. All the bad ones include snow, cold, and the field. I would like to get in contact with others that served with me. Some of the names I recall are Ronnie Westmoreland, Nick Bottino (the loan shark), Bobbie Abbott, Floyd Bean, Anderson, Otis Arnold, Andy Lucero, Carl Connor. I'm sure I'll remember more when I end this posting.

I worked in the NCO club Video store while I was there.(if you knew me you remember my outfits for work) A chaplin had a not so nice comment for my mom about one of them. I remember when The "Rock" was locked down and I also remember all the guys who where there to protect us "civilians" and I just want to thank them all. If you remember me and wanna e mail me then go for it I miss being around the military. One more thing for all of those going over to Iraq .. please come home safely

At the rank of CPL, I served in Desert Storm with CSM Joe Hill (1 Feb 91 – 6 May 91). Gunner on HHC 77 (eight more than 69, as CSM Hill would say.)

I'm glad to see an association has been established.

Looking for Patrick Davis. He was in Desert Storm. And worked with the M1A1 Tanks. I was in Jr High at the time & became a penpal with him. We wrote each other for 8 months. After the war was over he went back to Germany. Too leave then came back. After that we lost touch. I would love to hear how he is doing. Thanks!

PS His mailing address at the time was PFC Patrick Davis CCO 122nd MSB APO NY 09747-6140…I hope I can find him.

If there's anyone out there who was in Frankfurt, Germany with the 3rd in 1982 please drop me a line or two. Who knows maybe we were there at the same time.

Mr.Harold Renner or Pap as everyone called him passed on to a better world on 28 March 2003. Pap was my wifes Grandfather and will be truly missed by many. I am learning what i can about his days in the Army, and like most this was a subject he never talked about, and now I know why. If anyone knew of Pfc Renner please comment and I will read any thing you may know, now that I have found a site dedicated to the Spearhead. Thanks to all and God Bless.

I would like to contact anyone who was assigned to Headquarters Company 1/48th Infantry as a Medic from April 1, 1967 through October 12, 1968.

I have been back to the Coleman Kasserne many times throughout the past 35 years, and have observed the many changes that have taken place at our former base.

I will be returning again in June of 2003. I would like to speak with anyone who has returned to our former base and who was stationed at Headquarters Company 1/48th Inf during the years 1967-68. Also, please call me if you were a Medic during these years, even though you haven't returned to the base.

You may reach me at (800)382-2266 Mon-Fri 8:00am – 5:00pm CST in Wittenberg, WI.

I left college in 1980 and joined the ARMY. I was stationed in Hanau with the 23rd Engineers Bravo Company from '81 – '83.

My first day in country felt like I just landed on Mars. What the hell is a "Rad"? What the hell are "pom-fritz"? The "Fulda" what?

Those(2)short years felt like lifetime then. Looking back now, it feels like it was a lifetime ago. I'm a little older and a lot wiser because of my experince with the 3AD. No doubt about it. The people I met (Enlisted, NCO's and Officers) all left an everlasting impression on me. Collectively they taught me many invaluable lessons in life that only began to make sense to me as years passed.

I was saddened to read that the 23rd Engineer Bat. has since been reflagged under the 16th Engineers, and the Francois Kaserne is now desolate. I can't explain it, but when I read that I felt like a part of me died along with it.

I'll always be proud of my service during the Cold War (which we won in case anyone forgot) and also of the people I service with. So to the Sgt. Gary's… Sgt. Kupp's… Sgt. Christensen's… PFC McCart's… PFC Kelly's and LT. Graves' (who's probably a General by now)of the world… thank you all and God Bless.

What's up fellas? I am lad to see this web site actually works. I got an e-mail from a fellow scout today. Does anyone out there remember a SFC. DeVought? I am not sure what company he was in, but he was stationed at Koleman Barracks in Gelnhausen. Gotta go, I'll check back soon. Lasiter

The 1st Cav was a gung ho unit. Had the first tactical nuclear capability in the theater. But the unit and men were to be tremendously hurt.

In late 1962 Captain Alfred V. Svenson, S2 Officer, Hq & Hq Co, 1st CAv moved up to the Combat Command on the Kaserne. It was from here in May 1963, as the S2 Officer, CC, that he deserted and crossed though the Iron Curtain where he stayed for about a year with the Soviets.

I know the full story of what brought the event into being, and who had turned him in for leaking classifed documents to the USSR. But the 1st Cav took the beating for this character. Many troopers careers were hurt, ruined and destroyed in the process.

Cheers. Enter URL www.1stBooks.com my name and End of a Silence to see just a part of my recent activities. This is a true story which plays out in my childhood area in the 1800s.
