Had a great time yesterday at the dedication for General Rose. I took the 4 hour drive from Philly to Connecticut and had a blast. The weather was great and the leaves are just starting to turn up there. So many people worked hard for it all to come together, the local VFW, Legion and other vet organizations, the historian and much more too numerous to mention. I also talked with General Funk for a few minutes. I have digital pics, so if anyone wants one, please email me. Spearhead! jim

Although it is still September, winter is on its way to northern Europe. The gray skies that herald its approach are but a foretaste of the months of dark, gray days to come. I think that most of us remember those days of mind numbing cold. Snot frozen on mustaches, goggles that were made worthless by snow (or should I say sideways snow?) being driven onto them while trying to drive a track in a blizzard and finding it VERY difficult indeed to take care of business ala ‘bear in the woods’. Having to preheat the keys to open the locks with Zippos because it was so cold the butane lighters wouldn’t work. The scrambled eggs that interacted with the aluminum containers to produce ‘green eggs’ and ham (is that where Dr. Sues got the idea?), that is if you were lucky enough to get ‘hot’ food in the field, otherwise it was c-rats de jour (case opened upside down so everyone had a fair chance of getting the ‘best’ meals, combat, individual) when eaten cold were ok if you scrapped the thick chunks of grease (I hope) out of the way prior to ingestion. The new drivers who insisted on stopping mid-hill on paved icy roads only to find that the impossibility of control of a 13 ton bobsled with a mind of its own, careening off parked cars on its journey back down the hill. The cold weather ‘mask’ that must have been Jason’s idea of cold weather chic, beacuse to use it meant a painful removal. TA-50 melting or burning up because it came in contact with the heater ( I think we were lucky we had one working heater for nine tracks) outlets. Those worthless leather gloves that once wet stayed wet, giving one lobster claws instead of hands. Damn I miss it….

Is there anyone out there who served in Hanau in 68-70? I've beeb searching this site for 2 years and I can't believe that there is nobody there who served with me (maybe I wasn't there at all). Anyhow, if you're out there please leave a message in this guestbook. I'll find ya if you do. In case you don't remember my name, I answered to the name Ski and was stationed at the Hutier Kaserne (I think) on Lomboy Strasse. Hope to hear from somebody…anybody. Mox-nix!!!

It's been ten years since I left Ray Barracks, and a day doesn't pass that I don't think about all my friends from over there. It was unfortunate that the Division had to become a memory. To this day I still cherish my blue yellow and red patch, the one I was told to try and avoid when I arrived in Germany. If you don't want to live in the field, ask for anything but the 3rd Armored division they said. I couldn't have asked for a better division to have gone to. My memories are fledging now, but this site helps. Lets all keep the stories coming in so that we don't lose those memories. SPEARHEAD FOREVER.

What an awesome site! Man, what a memory reviver! Got out in '92. In late 90's I Worked as a Reporter & Morning Weather guy for NBC-TV 6 affiliate in Waco/Killeen Market. Currently (9/2002) working at PBS affiliate in Killeen as Manager of Corporate Support. Our station is home to "Fort Hood Town Hall" live call in television program. Served as Cpt. Phillips (Superman!)Driver in Desert Storm, then moved to 3rd platoon to Gun for B-33 and Wild Eyed SSgt. Cook! Hey 3rd platoon, remember the night we stopped (I think in Iraq) and were surrounded by wild dogs and Big Joe Castillio decided to take control of the situation by packing a round or 2 into one of the mongrels?? I thought we were gonna have a congressional hearing right there in the fricking desert to track down the smoking gun!!!Funniest damn memories and best damn friends a guy could ever have!

Was the NCOIC (MSG E8) of the Assistant Division Engineer Shop when the division was still 8th ID. Was there from Sep 1989 to May 1991 when I retired. Was there for early part of Desert Storm but did not go with my unit, 12th Engr Bn, because the General wanted to keep his staff intact. Maj Richard Jimmerson was the ADE. He had replaced Maj Ridenour.

There is a memorial service next week to honor General Rose. General Rose commanded the 3d Herd during WWII. He was killed in action. The details can be found on our website at http://www.3ad.org/mg_rose_dedication.htm The last time I checked, I believe General Funk who commanded the division in Desert Storm was going to be speaking. If you can get to the service, please do so.

Greeting to all Vanguards and Spearhead troopers. I first checked in about a year ago. Have been able to contact a few former comrades via this guestbook. Great site! Checking in again to let any former Vanguard soldiers know I can always be contacted at the yahoo address. Have some photos of Coleman Kaserne and Desert Storm deployment stored on my computer. They're free for the asking. Being older and smarter and out of the Army these past 11 years, I realize that the number of Americans citzens who are willing to raise their right hand, put on a military uniform and endure all the hardships and risks to serve their country … these kinds od citizens are very few. All you folks who can say…"I served", you more than others deserve the freedom, prosperity and the rewards of citizenship that the USA has to offer. Live well.

I know I may not have been one of the best soldiers in the outfit but I don't think I was one of the worst either. I was ready to die for my country and still am today. I landed at the ROCK after training at first Ft. Jackson then Ft. Polk. What an eye opener it was. I'm roomin with a brother that had more hair my mother, I wish I could remember his name. He wore a stocking cap to bed and somehow kept in down during the day. But come night time he picked it out and let it fly. I thought I was roomin with Jimmy Hendrix. Speaking of Hendrix, the ROCK was screaming when I got there. I thought I had seen it all at Woodstock but I couldn't tell the difference. People were getting stoned all over the place. There was still talk of the race roits but thank God I didn't see any. You needed a damn dictionary though to figuer out all the different hand shakes the brothers did. I may not have cared for everything we did or all the people there but I know I picked up more than just bad habits and I hope left a few good impressions too. The memmories still live we me today, running 3 miles before breakfast and doing it on my own again in the evenings. The 300 mile "Run For Your Life" patch I wasn't given because the BN commander had only done 200 miles, Sorry, Sir. The company TOP that ate nails for breakfast and was never shy about chewing your ass out in front of the whole company. The time I thought I would die from cleaning the barracks floor with ammonia and cholrine cleaner, my lungs hurt for days after that. The dusting of the barracks for crabs and the first time I ever shaved my balls. They don't make em like they used too! All joking aside I didn't realize at the time all the tradition there was there and now I wish I had. I think of Desert Storm that followed and the job well done by those fellows not to mention all that was done prior to my arrival. As I get older I seem to get prouder of our country. I saw the iron curtain and it was real that's for sure. I feel proud of the small part I played in defending our freedom. I know freedom's price is paid with blood and that blood should always be remembered and honored. I've had the good furtune to travel to China,Japan,Korea & the Phillipines and always think about and honor our dead heros there. America may not be perfect but you tell me one better. I ask of people all the time when they are banging on America which country has done more for the world. It's always the same answer, silence! Thanks for the memories.

Am looking for information on my father,Arthur H. Green. He was a Tec5 when he was discharged.Place of seperation was,Camp Atterbury, Ind. Dad never talked of the war, but on his dischare papers I found it lists him having 5 bronze stars. I would love to know how or why he received these. Unfortunalty all his medals were stolen. Dad died of a massive heart attack in Feb. 1982. If anyone can tell me anything about my father I would love to here from you. He was at Normandy,Northern France,Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. According to the discharg papers he was a Truck driver. Thank You.

I was there when the new hanger was built in 1968. The company lived in the new hanger for a few weeks while the barracks were being redone. We had 3 UH-1B helicopters 63-507, 63-508, I don't remember the other tail number, and I belive 8 OH-13H helicopters. I was there when the OH-13 was stolen by an enlisted person and tried to fly it.

I was in the 4th Plt.(Mortars). I seem to remember my Plt.Sgt was a Master Sgt. McConnell although I'm not quite sure of the right name. I am now 60yrs old. Currently a Sergeant with the San Francisco Police Dept. hope to retire in ten months. I spent 10.5 years in the Army. Two tours in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Div, and the 199th Light Inf. Brigade. I was discharged SFC E-7. I only remember a few names of the guys in our Company. Richard Redecki from New York is one. I have a lot of photos of the guys in the Company. I do remember our CO Captain Walter R. Jones. How can anyone forget him, a great guy. We won the best Infantry Company in the Division in 1962. We were the best.

I have added a number of new unit sites the past month. We built sites for all of the support units we know of, they can be found under Division Support Command. We also have built all of the Aviation units we know of, they can be found under Division Aviation. All of these are found in the Unit Websites Section. If you served in a 3AD unit that is not listed, please let me know and we will make one for it.

loved my time there, would love to find a few guys/gals I was stationed with. I ended up in the USAF crewing Fighter planes and returned to Germany at Hahn Air Base crewing F-16s from 1984-88, returned to US to crew F-111's at Cannon AFB, NM. Just retired from the Mo. Air National Guard this month after another 6 years on the F-15. Hope to hear from some folks thanks.

Served with HQ, 3D AD from 1979-84, Asst NCOIC Personnel Management responsible for determining enlisted assignments throughout the division. Later moved next door as NCOIC Personnel Actions. Worked with CWO Fred Daniels and WO Roy Miles. These were two great officers to work with very compassionate, intelligent and highly professional. The AG's I served with were outstanding officers along with Division Chiefs and the Division Commanders and thier staff officers. 1SGT Jones ran the 503d AG Repl Co. One of the most impressive NCO's I've ever served with. Lived in Drake/Edwards Housing when the car bomb exploded almost directly in front of my quarters. I was in charge of my building. Transferred back to Ft Campbell, KY in August 1984 where I retired Sep 1988. Still residing in the area in Clarksville, TN.

I arrived at 503rd replacement center in July 1968 and was interviewed for a Cadre position at the 3rd Armored Division NCO Academy at Kirchgoens. I would later learn it was known as the Rock. The bus trip from Frankfurt to Kirchgoens stopped at every Kaserne on the way to the Rock. What an eye opener to see each different Kaserne and then arrive at the Rock. Actually, Ayers Kaserne was laid out quite nicely. All the essential business places were within a short walk of each other.

I was assigned to HHC, 1st Brigade with duty at NCO Academy. I began my 1968 tour in the orderly room of the Kiwi College (nickname of the Academy as known by the troops that dreaded a four week TDY at the Academy as a student).

The hallways displayed a spit shined autobahn down the middle of each hallway. No student dared to walk on this autobahn. About 3 weeks after my arrival, I recall, Russia walked into Czechoslovakia, and the 3rd AD was on alert the remainder of that summer.

It was now August ’68 and the post boiler was turned off for a month for its annual cleaning. No hot water for a month! The majority of the Kaserne units were in the field and their dependents were very frequent visitors to the PX, movie theatre, and café. The miniskirt recently arrived in USAREUR from the world and was quite the rage to folks that had been in FRG for a number of years.

Soon I was the PSNCO of the NCO Academy where we broke starch each day. The Cadre members of the Academy were Strack Troopers or at least looked the part in their heavy-starched fatigues, white neck scarf displaying a small 3rd AD patch, and spit shined boots.

I recall late in ’68 we were the first to wear the subdued, collar rank insignia. One day, a young buck sergeant whipped a salute on me. I was a SP4 at the time. I continued on my way. He pursued me and wanted to know why I, a Lieutenant, did not return his salute. I gave him a good look at my insignia. After what seemed like an eternity for him, he walked away with his entourage of young SP4s and PFCs. Soon, I was the PSNCO of the NCO Academy. By then, everyone was wearing the subdued rank insignia pins.

I began my record collection while at the Rock, often purchasing 78 albums on the local economy, dirt cheap; — for the all mighty dollar was worth $1.25 compared to 4 Deutsche Marks.

I enjoyed a pizza and bottle of strawberry wine at the little shop directly outside the main gate. I liked the PX at Giessen too. I purchased my first pair of Florsheim wingtips there.

My AIT was infantry at Fort Ord. Then Uncle Sam sent me to Fort Knox for track school and then shipped me to the ROCK where I ended up in personnel. Too bad we didn’t have PCs and templates in those middle years of the Vietnam War. We didn’t even have a copy machine. What a pain to type monthly reports over and over to obtain sufficient copies for everyone on the distribution list.

Thru it all, my tour of duty [68-70] prepared me well for civilian life. Thanx Uncle Sam, and the US Army, and the 3rd Armored Division, and retired 1SG Wallace K. Reed. I'm now the Coordinator for the Electronic Funds Transfer Program for the PA Department of Revenue.

Thanx for the fine photos on the website of Ayers Kaserne and other areas of the 3rd Herd. Those photos took be right back to the sights, and sounds, and smells of the Rock. If any of the following guys are out there, give me an e-mail message: Don Moyer of San Jose; Charlie Patterson of Western PA; Jeff Combs, 503 MP.

With sincere regards, SFC David W. Demmy, Sr., Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at DoubleD@Demmy.cc

I would also like to add my following comrades who worked in the section with me: SGT Thomas, Jose SGT Nunez SGT Johnson PFC Kimm They were a few more but I can't remember their names. All except for PFC kimm are still on active duty, so good luck to you all and look me up, sometime. Now, I am a SFC(P) with the 1-23 IN (SBCT), as the S-6 NCOIC. All of the equipment I work with now are way ahead, of the ones I worked on in the Gulf. Thanks.

We were engage in heavy fights with the republican guard and we ended up in the other side of Check point Charlie. By the end of the War we were across the street from an Iraqui Naval Base. I spent 2.5 years hanging out in Buedingen. I was a medic and then I went to work for command as a driver since it was obvious that I wouldn't be re-uping…I was there when the 3/12 changed into the 4/7..nothing like being in the field for 3 months while everyone gets brought up to speed on the new gear eh? Names I can remember..Mike Neff, Andrew Goltzman, Monk("I think I smoke a cig every 10 minutes?..that can't be good."), Troy Sasser, the almighty SFC. Padilla( "those are silent LL's private!!" no better way to start your tour in a new unit than to pronounce the section Sgts name wrong!)HHT top BenJAMMIN' ..CO Capt.Iler..My roomie who lost his brother.. Mark Rosas, Jerome Moore,..I see alot of faces but I can't put any names to them..anyone who wants to drop me a line feel free..I'd love to hear from anyone who was there.I was the guy with the longest hair who road a skate board and liked punk rock..I also worked in the new dispensary that was built on Armstrong Barracks for several months. I spent my time as an ambulance driver and platoon sargents driver. I was in charlie co. 45 th med. Charlie company supported the 3 rd brigade and all units within. I have been at Freidburg, hanau, flegerhorst. graf, hohensfels, wildflicken. ( me and a Texan actually tried to get a wild boar by standinf over a pile of garbage on a mess truck. We taped a butcher knife to a long tire iron. the texan held the light and I had the spear the boar game in , we flicked the light on and speared him in the back of the neck, the knife sprang back at us , he grunted and we never found him. The blade went in 6-8 inches' Its been a long time but I remember a few names. General Stier, And a tank commander or larger unit, Colonel Dusty Rhodes. I watched the tankers train many times. They were awesome.I got sidetracked above and did list all places but reading others stories brings back great memories. Me and Doug Aunet , and kotek,Bear, Cloutier, Mess kit fought the battle of Sachsenhausen Wine Stubes many times. Of all the things I did nt bring back was a unit crest for the cap and shoulder band if any one could help i would appreciate it . Thanks And A serious thanks to all the 3ad vets who fought in WW2 and desert storm. We all owe them more than we can ever repay. I am proud and privlidged to say I kept the seats warm for the real soldiers John

I was looking on the rosters for people I remembered from the gulf, I only saw a couple. Those I remember were Swain(who I met up with in Ft. Drum), Blevins, Reed, Traylor, Sgt. Parker, Sgt Jeter, off the top of my head. I also remember a female cook named Buckmaster, but I'm not sure if she was in 3rd AD. It seems like forever ago. Anybody remember Hafar al Batin? I'm delighted to see this as I was having no luck finding some of my LT buddies from back then. I was a 2LT later 1LT with Echo and Alpha companies, 23d EN BN, from OCT 81 to OCT 84. I will try to find some photos of either Hessen Homburg, or some from the MTAs or other training.

I'd like to see more about what you all want to accomplish before I send $$$ – to be honest $25/yr seems steep. Why so much? What exactly are we trying to do? I'm a parent on a budget . . .

I am proud to have served and wouldn't trade my time in Germany for anything. I particularly re- call many bridging exercises on the Main River, usually in January at night. Some went better than others . . .

Best of Luck in this endeavor-

Hello. I am Chaplain (LTC) Charles Howell. I served as the Chaplain for the 1/48th Infantry at Gelnhausen, Germany from December 1989, until it was re-designated the 4/18th Infantry in 1989, until it was inactivated in November 1991. Loved my unit and my two battalion commanders, LTC Robert St. Onge, and LTC Robert Fulcher, Jr.

I also respected the 2nd Brigade commanders, COL Paxton, and COL Higgins.

Currently, I serve as the Chief of Officer Training Division at the Chaplain Center and School at Fort Jackson, SC 29207.

Please add my name and email address to the HHC, 4/18th Infantry roster.

I'm now one of the ill Gulf war Vets. I've been told that I have Gullion Barre' syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, A motor neuron disorder ( start of ALS? )Have lost my teath, gone blind in one eye.

I'd like to hear from other Vets from 3rd AD espeacially those with MS. LTC Donnely has already gotten ALS noted and approved for full compensation from the VA. We need to get MS recognized next. My estimation, is that there are 500-600 GW vets with MS. Contact me at fury4402000@yahoo.com

I was at the Rock about late 1971 through early 1972. I actually got there right after the riots and remember the live machine guns manning the parade field. I’ve lost track of my service papers and don’t remember exactly which unit I was in, so I'm guessing. I wasn't exactly military material, just a hippie musician from Oregon! I was a company clerk. When I got there, in the middle of winter, someone they had pulled from tanks was running the office until the clerk replacement showed up, (that being me) and instead of allowing me to do my job, they made me pull a lot of guard duty instead and I finally just didn’t show up one night. I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia, an article 15 and in short order, a chapter 10, out for the good of the service. Still, it was an important time in my life and I’m glad I was there.

I have many photos of the Frankfurt-Hanau area that I took around Labor Day, 1997…to include several pictures of Drake, Edwards, Francois, Hessen Homburg, Hutier and Pioneer Kasernes….my wife's father, LTC Washburn, was Staff Judge Advocate for 3rd Armoured Division in the middle to late 1960s. She is a graduate of the now defunct Frankfurt American High School as well.

Just now found the web site and sure enough it brought back plenty of great memories. I was one of the first to go to the reactivated HHC 2/33 Armor (TIGER BN.) I was assigned to the 3/33 for about 2 months and because I was a newby I got to go to the TIGER BN. MAINT. We started cleaning our new motor pool and we had a SFC Cain in charge of us and He worked our tails off. (day and night) for a very long time. Finaly a MSG Henry Moss taken over Bn. Motor Sgt. and we had one hell of an organized motor pool. He was a great guy. I live in Elizabethtown, Ky. and if anyone was part of the 33rd during that time I would sure like to hear from you. My E-mail address is Years40@aol.com.

Again thanks for the memories. John

Wonderful to see a site dedicated to the 3rd AD. I was originally part of the 3/33rd Armor then we moved to Gelnhausen and became 4/8 cav. I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Canadian Army Trophy team (D Co.) in 87. The memories of my service in the "Spearhead" are ones of extreme professionalism and the feeling that I was in the best division in the Army. Even today I still believe in the values and pride that I was given as a young private. Spearhead leads the way! (then) Sgt Charles E. Phillips

I find it very disturbing that although all BN units of the 42nd BDE are mentioned on several sites,to include the 42nd BDE website that there is no history of theHHB or any of the soldiers that served in that unit. I also have found that most of those units were honored with some type of award, nothing is mentioned of the BDE HQ,s. I get the feeling that this element was not important to the division. Any help out there for this? I deployed with the 42nd BDE from Giessen Germany and wanting info.

I had the pleasure of going to a retirement ceremony for CSM Dwight Peters. He was the 1SG for Echo Company, 3/5 Cav. I am usually bored out of my skull at these functions, not this time. This man was really loved/liked by one and all. Congratulations CSM Peters. I hope you have as much impact on the civilian world as you did for those military who were lucky enough to be influenced by you.

I got there in the fall of 1980. Myself O'Montgomery and SP4 Sandivol got called up to the Rock to interview for staff jobs. Capt Welborn (Curtis G.) asked if I could draw a straight line with a ruler, I said yes and became the Battalion Draftsman (81E) in S3, I was an 11B. Mongomery got the track drivers job in S2, Sandivol was already an Sp4 and smart enough to play dumb. He went to Charlie Co.. I don' think I've felt as valuable and stupid in my life as I did in those 2.5 years. Sgt Francquer (James B.) from Maine, you like a real fun big brother who showed me how to get an M113 out of the motorpool without a dipatch and take it 4 wheeling. We sure gave JJ a reason to change his drawers when we went over the side of that hill. To Cpt Welborn I've never forgotten that heart to heart on that first TOC exercise I was on. I sure would like to know what happened to (E1-E4)Perez, Montgomery's roommate who escaped for house arrest was caught again, sentenced to a work camp in OK then to a Bad Conduct Discharge unit at Ft Dix. He went across the street to Mcguire AFB caught hop back to Germany and ended up working for AFFEES in the PX in Guiessen (? spelleing). Some of the guys I'd like hear from are Cpt Welborn, SSG Franqueur, SP4 Gilmore, Ray (the real 81E who took the job), Bert (Pedigrew), SP4 Bolden,SP4 Chaney,SP4 Skip(Hendrick),Perez, SSG Ferguson and SFC Gram (2 men who to this day 20 years later still mold my character). SFC Gram was an instructor at the NCO academy in Kransseberg where I graduated The Distguished Honor Graduate and made Sgt E5 after 2.5 years in service. I always wanted to be a soldier and for me 2-36th Inf. was the best place to experience that. And I got to do it with a group of MEN I remember with great respect.

I arrived in Germany in the late winter of 1980. I stayed at the 503rd Replacement Barracks in Frankfurt for about 9 days. My orders came through and I went to Charlie Company,1/32 Ar, Ray Barracks(Kaserne). Got to dine in the old Elvis A. Presley dining facility. Being a Bandit was the most fufilling time in my life. I was there when we got the M60A3 thermal tank. I was an E-2 Loader when we took 3rd in the Canadian Army Trophy 1981. It was the first time the US had placed in the top 3( so we were told).Still have my Gold Medal from that experience. Training at the FTA (friedberg training area)Graf, Hoenfels and Wildflicken ,snow snakes for the 'cruits and the 'hawk' that cut through you in february no matter what you were wearing. Company Commander at the time was CPT Kevin Thomas Kelley. 3rd PLT Sergeant was SFC Mack Taylor.

Been a while since I've checked in. I did write a little something in March, but the website was messed up and it didn't get in. I'm glad some of you are getting my book "Faraway Thunder; A Journey through Army Life & the Gulf War." The association bookstore on this site has them. We've sold about 25 copies through the site so if your interested check it out. More will be in stock there soon. I am also listed on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com. Am getting good response and lots of letters and emails from guys in the Red Lions, and others. There's a lot about the war in the book but also a lot of things from life on the "ROCK." Here's a little bit from the book about getting to the Rock. Maybe some of you experienced this. "Within four months I was in a place called Kirch-Gons, West Germany. I was assigned to a unit in the 3rd Armored Division and stationed at a place called the Rock, right outside Kirch-Gons. The Rock was exactly what its name implied. It sat on a hilltop surrounded by open German countryside. Its reputation held it as one of the toughest tours in Germany. When I arrived and people told me just how bad a place the Rock was, I figured it poetic justice. The army found the toughest place in Germany to send me just to see if I could hack it … My unit was the 4th Battalion, 32nd Armored Regiment of the First Brigade, 3rd Armored Division; nicknamed the Red Lions. Our uncompromising motto was "Victory or Death." We were a tank unit. As time passed I found this particular tank unit has a pretty good reputation. In 1988 our Abrams tanks shot the highest score ever recorded for a unit at gunnery training. We had the most advanced tanks and equipment in the army: the M1A1 Abrams tank; the Bradley fighting vehicle; and a bunch of those funny looking new jeeps called humvees … Our mission was to protect a huge pass in western Germany called the Fulda Gap. The Fulda Gap had been the chosen invasion route into that part of western Europe all through ancient and modern history. If the Russians were to attack West Germany they would surely come through the Fulda Gap. But, with 12,000 nuclear warheads in the U.S. arsenal pointed in their direction, most of us knew the Russians were probably never going to attack West Germany. I began to see our mission then, as playing out some kind of historical balance. That balance of power had to exist, and we were it. Anyway, we all played our roles to the best of our abilities every day. We were being all we could be. Pretty soon I started thinking the Rock wasn't all that bad an assignment. Sure we went to the field, but only three or four months a year. That left eight or nine months back in garrison and all I needed was a pass or some leave and I could travel anywhere in Europe. Not bad." Gotta go here. Guys or gals from the Red Lions, or the Rock or anybody, would like to hear from you. Drop an email.

Anyone looking for information on those buried in any of the American cemeteries maintained in foreign lands should begin their search at the website of the American Battle Monuments Commission. http://abmc.gov/ They maintain databases on all of the burials in these cemeteries; keeping in mind, however, that not all burials were identified personnel.

I drove for two A Co Commanders, John Longfellow and Joseph Dyson. The First Sergeant was James Rogers. I left on a re-up transfer in '68 to CONUS but later ran across some of the unit members in 1-77 Armor on the DMZ of RVN in '69 and '70. Retired in 1992 as Command Sergeant Major.

Chaplains Asst. at Rays Barracks, Friedberg. Served under Chaplains MAJ Schultz, CPT Ekes, and others. This is a great site, brings back memories of Fulda, Wildflicken, and Graf. I would really love to go back for one more peek. I'll never forget the protests over the MX missiles. Had a car bomb go off in Housing area. Anyone remember?

One of our genealogy patrons is trying to find out the burial spot in the Normandy American Cemetery of an ancestor who was killed during the D-Day liberation. Thus far she has been unable to find any avenue to begin the inquiry. Do you have any contact information or suggestions I may pass on to the patron? Please advise. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I was not part of the 3ad, it was turned into the 1ad just before I got to the rock. Just the same the Rock was a big part of my youth, seeing these pictures of it deserted is really upsetting. I will never forget the friends that I made there. One of the best memories I have happened at the Welcome Inn, a buddy of mine named Tracy and I were drinking when another soldier from 3/5 cav came up and asked Tracy about his time in the desert. He then, with tears in his eyes, thanked Tracy for keeping the Iraqies off his units back with artillery fire so they could carry out their missions. Tracy told him, with the same sentiment,no, thank you, for keeping them off of us so we could complete those fire missions. Of course the alcohol added to the mood but the true feelings were there.

For those of you who attended the 2nd annual 3AD Association Reunion in Louisville, I was personally happy to share that time with fellow Spearheaders from all time periods. What a great time, and what a great bunch of folks! The memorial ceremony at Ft. Knox was a very emotional moment for all; very few dry eyes there. The banquet was a total success, from my point of view; a hearty WELL DONE to those behind it. Everything in between was fun, fun, and more fun. I hope we can "capture" some former Spearheaders from the west coast next year, in Seattle, and see all the folks from this year's event as well.

I served on Fliegerhorst Kaserne from March of 1986 until October, 1987 when I was detailed as the POL operator for the Giessen Army Heliport working under the Giessen Community Commanders office. I worked with then CW3 Conrado who was the Pilot of the "Generals Bird". The Community Commander was then Brig. Gen. Roche. I would be interested to hear from any one who served in the Community Commanders Staff from October, 1987 till March, 1988

I'm Writing this for my Dad, Freddie (Fred) Lee McGuire, He served from 1958-60 was Hon. Discharged as a PFC. His health is not so Great, And I thought some messages from some of his old Army Buddies would cheer him up. He may have been quiet, but I doubt it. He then was about 5'9" and skinny and a mouth full of teeth when he smiled, usually a cut up. If anyone remembers him please give me an E-Mail at kd5fmu@hotmail.com or fmcguire@sbcglobal.net Thanks in Advnace

I visited the site becase my dad Howard Stockel served in the the 3rd Armed Division during WWII, as a Sergeant. I was looking for the Link on Maj. Gen. Rose. My dad was one the one who had recovered his helmet and had given it to the investigating officer, the helmet was then given back to my dad. When he heard about the Rose Memorial Hospital being build in Denv. he gave the helment to the hosptial. I plan on visiting the site to find out more about the years my dad spent in WWII.

My wife Ruth and I had a good time at the reunion last weekend in Lousiville. It was easy to get to know everyone, and it was great that people that had served in the different eras of the 3rd AD were represented. Thanks to the planners, and it was a good time to meet new people, and renew old friendships. Seattle next year, and I hope the reunion will be bigger and hope to work out something to make it. If not there is 2004. Again thanks for a nice weekend, and God Bless.

I had the great fortune to command some fantastic soldiers in Co. C, 2nd Bn. 48th Infantry from 1970-71 in Gelnhausen. I also was extremely blessed to command the outstanding soldiers of 3rd Bn. 36th Infantry on the "Rock" from 1987-1988, and 5th Bn. 5th Cav from 1988-1990. The soldiers of 3/36 INF & 5/5 CAV won the USAREUR Infantry Squad Competition in 1988, the best feield mess for 1989, and set USAREUR records in Bradley gunnery in 1988, 1989, & 1990.

Need to update your roster of wounded. A/4-18 had two soldiers wounded on 28 March 91 about 1630 hours. SPC Dayton and SPC Guevara from 3d platoon, accidently steped on a buried Iraqi 81MM mortar shell within the company assembly area just south of HWY 6. Dayton lightly wounded and Guevare more seriosly injured.

HHC/4-18 lost SPC Linsey from the Mortar Platoon on 1 March 91

I was with the 3rd herd when it was re-activated at Ft. Knox in 1955 and "Gyro'ed" to Germany in 1956. It was the 143rd Armord Signal Company then. It didn't become a BN until the Division went "pentomic" in 1957. Would like to hear from any of the old guys from that period.

I was stationed at Ray Barracks with "No Slack" Alpha Co.from Dec.78-Dec.81. I'm not quite sure, (those were trying times for all of us)but I fell in love with Germany, and a girl all at at the same time.(and never really got over either) Friedberg,Hessen will always be a 2nd home. I would like to hear from anyone at Ray Barracks at the same time. I'm also looking for Bill Gill, and Jonnie Brown. if anyone has heard from them have them drop me a line. "NO SLACK!"

I am writing on behalf of my father, Carl Garack. Dad died at 4AM the 4th of July, 2002 at the age of 84. He served with honor throughout WWII with the 3AD in Europe. His membership in your organization gave him much pleasure during the last months of his life. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia. His children and grandchildren will miss him very much. Per his wishes, dad will RIP at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek, MI. Fort Custer was dad's induction center into the US Army 60 years ago. God bless my father and all those who preserved our freedoms.

Christine Garack
