I am looking for a buddy named Al Sizemore. He might have been transfered to Ft.Devens Mass in 58? with the rest of the RA's.I remember being chased by the MP at Graph.I was trying to get me schnitzel sandwich.I was in the area that the round went short one time that we were there.I was on advanced party and was coming out of the mess hall and almost at the door of my tent when I heard two large shells overhead coming from two different directions into the impact area.I ran in the tent(like that would have saved me) and grabbed the tent pole. When they hit a few of the tents came down including ours.I remember thinking that somebody is going to get killed in this camp area because it was too close.I heard that an Honest John rocket and the infamous 280 Atomic cannon(no atomic war head) had fired from the autobahn at the same time.I was at Butzbach. With some of the things that happened there I am convinced that the damn place was haunted.Too many wierd things happened that could not be explained.Left on the Hodges and came home on the Rose.Misrable trip over and better coming home.

Thanks ever so much for the pictures of Schloss Kaserne… I didn't know it had been demolished… is it possible to get more pictures?? Sometimes it seems my life is a movie and they keep cutting the scenes… As T.T. said, "you can't go home again"… Oh well, such is my life.

If anyone remembers me… I would love to hear from you… I was in Butzbach 11 months and 10 days… 73-74.

I wish you all a wonderful life… mine has been crammed full of adventure… I may have been robbed of a physical past… but boy, do I have stories…

I think that soldier next to Laura Bush during the State of the Union was Sgt. Ronnie Raikes from Service Battery, 2-3FA. Can anyone confirm that? He was a great NCO and I'm happy for his obvious success.

As I enjoyed the Presidents speech tonight, I was shocked to see the soldier standing next to the first lady proudly wearing the Spearhead Patch as his combat patch. What a great moment for our Division to be remembered on national TV like that. I hope many vets who have not found us yet will have their interest in the Division renewed by that moment.

Joined the battlion 28 Nov. 1959. Arrived about 5am.We were loaded on a duce&half and taken into Schloss Kaserne and up stairs into the castle. I thought I was on a movie set. I was expecting Eroll Flynn to jump out and draw his sword. Went to Graf on the advance party a few days after Xmas. We had to erect all the GP tents for the Bn. It was cold with snow. The 3rd 0f Jan. the rest of the Bn. came to Graf for Winter Shield 1.I have great Memories and met some top notch people. My battery Co. was 1st Lt. Lee W.Tucker. What a great officer he was. He was stern but fair. I think if he asked his battery to attack the Soviet Union we would have. We trained hard, but also had good times when off duty. All the joints in Butzbach and all the towns around were fun. We hung out in a guesthouse call the Bongo, in Butzbach. It was still there when I went back for a visit in Sept. 2000. Now a pizza joint, but painted the same color. The Delacata, Kutchengarten, Moms, Fishers up on the hill to name others. I was just a young kid proud to be there. I have stayed in touch with a few of the fellows I served with, with two of them now gone. I'am going to pass on this info, about the 3rd AD asso., to these fellows hope they will join. Have many fond memories. It was, for me, a great adventure serving with the colors and all the great friends I met. Want to go to the next reunion, if able. Thanks for allowing the cold war vets to join this great Div. Association.

Its been a long time from the last time I walked the entrance thru the Main Gate at Schloss Kaserne…

I, like other vets wish that more care had been taken at the time we were at our respected assignments, to make a list of those we were serving with, many times I have wondered where such and such was and what he was doing now. I feel that is one of the most important things in life that I should taken care of….

My new e-mail is as above. Arrived in Oct 68 and left in May 70. I was the Battalion Ammo Clerk in the Support Platoon but mostly drove the Platoon Leaders around. Came in with a big group from Ft. Polk and was in AIT in C-2-3. We all were drafted in anticipated big follow up to Tet but ended up in Germany because of Russian response to Prague uprising in Oct 68. I've been watching this site for several years and have yet to see postings from men who served in 2/36 Inf in precisely that period. I'd like to hear from those who might have followed the same sequence or who were in 2/36 Inf at the time.

Most of the major units have unit websites with rosters. 2/36 is found at http://www.3ad.org/36in/36in_2/36in_2_roster.htm , keep an eye on them if you are looking for old friends from your time.

I just found this web site. Apparently it has been around for a few years. Well, I will take this opportunity to "catch up". I would like anyone in Second Battilion, 6th Field Atry. who remembers me to get in touch. I have maintained contact with several from A, B, Hqs, and Service Batt.. Dennis Carter, Glen O Crockrell, Don Snyder, and others. My wife Jan and I also stay in touch with the German family we lived with off post. We have some good memmories of Glenhausen, Lieblos, Graf. and other places. Looking forward to hearing from some of you. I understand there is a unit level bulletion board. Could some one direct me there? Thanks Durwood

I was stationed with the 1st Bn 36th Infantry in Friedberg, but my wife and I lived in quarters located in Bad Nauheim. We spent a lot of time going to alert positions and in various traning areas either Grafinwheir or Hoenfelds (Sp ?)…..

I had just been promoted to Capt and served as Bn S-3 Air and later as Co of HHC. When I first arrived the unit was 1st Bn 52nd Mechanized Infantry and about a month later it became the 1st Bn 36th Armored Infantry. The other Company commanders were Capt George E. Hussey, Capt Jack D. McClure, and Capt Lon A. Spurlock. All three of which were KIA in Vietnam on their first tours and I survived two tours….But that was all a long time ago

Nixon left office, 2nd AD gave us a run for our money during Reforger, Ford said the Rock was behind Germany and he was behind the Rock, but we all wondered where his daughter, Susan, was located. I got real cold and I will never forget that the infantry is TRUE BLUE.

I was in Friedburg in 1971 and 1972. Looking for anyone out there from A company 1-32nd Armored. Found Jeff Neipp the other night. How about Glenn Azvedo, Richard Burton, Bernie May, Steve Ratliff, John Seamosh or anyone else that might be reading this from our outfit? I'd like to hear from you. My pictures from that time were burned as well as my uniform with crest and patches and I'd like to see what I can do to replace any of these. "Chucky"

I served under SSG Bobbie J. Barbour and never forgot the guy. One of the most memorable leaders that I have ever had. I would like to hear from anyone that has any info regarding BJ Barbour or anyone that served during the same time I served at Ray Barracks. Even though I sometimes hated the weather and being away from "The World", I remember those years as the best times I have ever had.

My brother Teryle (Terry) Hovinga served in the gulf war with your unit. Found this site through google.com (search engine). Is there any way to get a picture of him in his dress uniform? There's one posted on the web but it's blurry. Terry died in 1991 and I don't have this picture. Any help would be appreciated.

I was in the Scout platoon of the 2/48th from 1959-62. The plat sgt was M/sgt Nance and later SFC Seegar. Platoon Ldrs were Tiger Johns–David Vanhooser–Caroll Vanhooser (Davids brother)Lt Lee (KIA in Vietnam) and a Lt Named Potter (later a BG). Some of the sgts were Montgomery–Haney–Davis–Cobley (KIA in Vietnam)–Summerville. I add that this unit 2/48 was the best unit I served with in my 20 years in the army

Attention Minnesota Cold War Vets. Our state has license plates for almost all veterans' status, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Purple Heat, Medal of Honor – and even National Guard & Reserve. A group of Cold War veterans and I have been e-mailing members of the Minnesota Legislature to get a Cold War license plate. If you served in the Cold War contact your local representative and get them moving. Better yet contact the members of the House Committee for Transportation and e-mail all the committee members. Those of us who served on the Iron Curtain helped protect freedom and democracy too – don't let them forget it !!!

Correction to previous post regarding finding information on my father-dates. Definately at Camp Polk LA were Jul 1941 through March of 1942 (not 1943 as originally posted) information past March of 1942 . Then he seems to vanish until he resurfaces again in Aug 1943 stationed at Camp Cooke CA. This is a HUGE gap in time (March of 42 til Aug 1943) Was my dad still in the 36th Infantry Co G at Camp Polk or what?

Great site! Looking for anyone from the 2nd platoon 503rd MP Company in Gelnhausen in the late 1970's. Whatever happened to 1lt James K. Rosa, SSG. Roberson, SFC Huggins, roommate Smitty and all the others. Remember the great ski weeks and trips to Hoensfels and "wildflicken" not to mention Graf in the winter. Its funny how you could'nt wait to get back to the world and yet now look back on those days as the "good ole days". I saw with a great amount of pride as the 3rd AD kicked some Iraqy butt in the gulf war and saw with a sad pride as the unit was deactivated. As far as I'm concerned, the 3rd is till in Germany filled with soldiers doing a great job and keeping us safe at the Fulda Gap..Funny how things change.

Again, what a great site!! I finally found someone I knew, Billy Wright. Man, it was so good to hear from an old friend. If anyone knows where 1SG Shindle, SGT Shane Jensen, SPC PAUL ROYBAL, or anyone else from Alpha3-5 or HHb 5-3, is, let me know please!!! 3-5 was the best bn. I have ever served in, and Buedingen was awesome. I am now a SSG in the Missouri Army National Guard as a combat engineer, and we are going to be part of the security force at the winter olympics. What a great honor.

Steve, I have submitted names about 4 times to add to the HHB 5-3 roster, but they have never been added. Is there anyone still on that job? If not, who do I send the names to?

I am a professor of History at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, specializing in 20th century military history. My current project, tentatively entitled, "Rhino Tanks and Sticky Bombs: American Ingenuity and the Second World War," examines field expedients developed by U.S. servicemen during the Second World War. In this project, I argue that the "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" mentality present in the United States prior to 1941, coupled with the preponderance of mechanical items that future soldiers and sailors had access to both prior to and during the war, made U.S. soldiers uniquely suited to find technical solutions to problems they encountered during the course of their wartime experiences. The most well-known example of this phenomena would be the "Rhino" hedgerow cutting tank developed in Normandy during the summer of 1944. Considering that field-expedient solutions are not commonly found among the British, French, German, Russian or Japanese armies, I believe that these non-regulation solutions, employed by U.S. soldiers engaged in all theaters of operation, were essential to the ultimate Allied victory. My questions for veterans of the 3rd Armored Division areas follows: Do you recall any instances of field expedient devices being developed to enable you to be mroe effective in the field? What were these items, what prompted their construction, and how was it possible to build them? If any of you are able to provide me with examples such as the Rhino tank, I would be more than happy to correspond with you. Please contact me at the address below. I am grateful for the sacrifices you and the members of the 3rd Armored Division made for this country, and I hope my research will help remind Americans that freedom is not free. Sincerely, Robert Wettemann Department of History Box 638 McM Station McMurry University Abilene, TX 79697-0638 wettemar@mcmurryadm.mcm.edu

I spoke with Walter Stitt for the first time in my life on Friday Jan 4, 2002. Sunday Jan 6, 2002, I watched The History Channel and to my amazement there was Mr. Stitt and others in a documentary on the 3AD. What an exciting time for me. Dad was in the 33AR, as a mechanic. He has a friend named Robert Young who lives in Chicago, IL. I would greatly like to contact him. If any of you have his phone number, please send it to me at the above email or call 919-553-2717 EST. The documentary was awesome, can't wait to meet some of you at the 55th reunion. If any of you knew my dad, would love to hear from you. Thanks, J.D. Hobgood

I am the son of George M. Hobgood, Sgt, 33Armor, Co. E, tank mechanic. My father died July, 1985. Just wanted to send a hello to the men my dad thought so much of. If any of you know Bob Young in Chicago, please let him know this. I am a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant who lived for 3 years in the town of Kerpen, Germany. In 1978, Dad came over to visit me and we took a short tour of the 3AD's route through Belgium and part of Germany. I will never forget our time together!!

Hope to see you at the 2002 reunion.

Sincerely,

J.D. Hobgood (919-553-2717) 108 Covey Ln. Clayton, NC 27520

Happy New Year to all. I am looking for some help, and know that the information is out there. I am looking for names of CSM/SGM that served in 3AD in the 83-85 time frame. Send any information to me, please! Unit, and First and last name or as much as you can remember. I am particularly looking for names from units outside the 1st Brigade. I do need an address for CSM Robert Lindsey, if you know one. The last one I have is in Germany and is no longer valid. I had a card from CSM Guevera at Christmas time, saw CSM Eddie Velez in Texas in mid December, and saw CSM Bonsall yesterday as he and I live close to each other. I visited with CSM Haga in October in ALabama and hope to get down there in a month or so. I'll wait until winter leaves the south. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks!

Ed Tucker CSM 2nd Bn, 3rd FA Jan 83 – Oct 85

Joined the Spearhead Div. at Ft. Knox in 1955. Gyroscoped to Germany in June, 1956. Was with B btry. of the 509th AFA until it became the 2/73rd. FA in 1958. So very many memories of Hanau and the little towns around that city (especially Seligenstadt), of the division, and the guys I served with. I hope some of those guys see this.

Always good to come back to this site and read some of the comments. I was a medic with the 2/32 at the Rock from '74 to '76. Trying to get in contact with other Spearheads who live in the Philly or South Jersey area and may be interested in getting together for swapping 'war' stories over a few beers (or flippies!) Drop me an email at myoung@ccc.state.nj.us If there's a group of us, we could use this as a good excuse to get away from the wives.

It's great to find this site. I look for information on the 3AD a few years back and couldn't find a thing. I'll have more info later after I dig in to my old foot locker. Would like to hear from anyone in "B" Co. during this time.

I was with the eigthcav when it was part of the eigth infantry division. I was there in 1963-66 at coleman barracks. We were one of the best units in the division. My company was the best in the eigthcav. I still remember the good times in down town Mannheim and sanhofen and cowtown

This IS a neat service and web site. I saw the barracks of the 503rd MP Co where I spent 18 months of my youth (August 1963-March 1965) during the peak of the cold war. I still recall the Church bells ringing throughout Frankfurt when JFK was assasinated and "Operation Biglift".
