As i sit home in my warm house on New years eve,and remembering New years in 84 in Frankfurt. I can remember it as it were yesterday. Myself, Walker, Lawson and a few others rang in the new year with fireworks having a war and throwing them across the street at hundreds of others. To those deployed now, and those who protected freedom from ivan Have a safe and Happy New year. The Spearhead Tradition lives on.

Any Service member mail:

Send a special holiday message to our men and women in the military defending American freedom worldwide.

Since 1967, when Sgt. Billy Thompson wrote Abigail Van Buren and mentioned that a wonderful Christmas present to our armed forces would be "just a letter from home," American citizens have been sending holiday wishes to servicemen and women stationed overseas every holiday season. Dubbed "Operation Dear Abby," the program has brought holiday joy to hundreds of thousands of U.S. military personnel deployed away from home.

Concerns about mail delivery have prompted the military to suspend this year's letter-writing campaign. However, the United States Department of the Navy's LifeLines2000 Services Network in association with SPAWAR SCC-NCR is providing this private and secure online resource that will allow you to send a Sailor, Marine, Soldier, Airman or Coast Guardsman a holiday greeting.

I arrived at Gelnhausen in APR '90 as part of B co 3/8 Cav, hq plt. By midsummer, I was moved to 2nd platoon as a gunner on 2-2 qualifying during the late summer of 1990. Before leaving Germany for the Persian Gulf, units were merged and slots filled and I was moved to a loader position on 2-1 for the remainder of my time with B co 3/8 CAV. I have some fond memories of Gelnhausen and my time spent with the unit in the field…SPC Sherrill, SPC Gonzalez, SGT Hanks, SGT Hudson, SPC (or PVT depending on when you met him) Rodriquez (2nd plt), Hq plt, 2nd plt, and the rest of the co….and the cool dudes in C 3/8. MUSTANGS!

I was stationed in the Francois Kaserne with the 288th Armored Field Artillary Unit of the 7th Army. I was assigned to Battery "B" which is the building in the foreground of the picture.

Last summer my wife and I visited my old barracks. My barracks looked pretty much the same from the outside. The inside was quite different. My bedroom is now a software company.

I would like to hear from anyone who was over there at that time.

I was the NBC NCO for Bravo Btry and enjoyed working the Bugs and Gas mission. The five gallon container of CS I had hidden in the NBC room was continuously used to gas those who failed to perform mask maintenance (via dusting) and those few individuals who pissed off the ash and trash crew. If any of the supply crew is around, Mr. (SGT) Nader-Orseni, Mr. (SPC) Gomez (AKA MN Mexican), Mr. (SPC) Boyd, drop me a line.

Hello, My name is Chris Garack. I am the daughter of Sgt. Carl Garack who served in the maintenace battalion during WWII. Both dad and mom are still alive and living with me in Northville MI.

Dad is 84 years old now. He has never really talked about his experiences during the war. Thoughts of what you guys went through still bring tears to his eyes.

This Christmas, we did talk about the 3ad association and the wonderful information on its web site. Dad now wishes to share his story with all of you.

If anyone out there remembers my dad, Carl Garack, please let us know. If a guy names "Becker" is still around or if a relative reads this, please contact. Anybody from the maintenance battalion, please contact me.

God bless all of you. And, thanks for what you all have done, from WWII on.

Crisp, a really gteat guy. We were at Hessen-Homburg Kaserne in Hanau Germany. The food was excellent in town, and not too bad in the mess hall.

Desert Storm vets and anyone else with an interest in the history of this event will want to check out a new addition to the "3rd Brigade in Desert Storm" section of the site. Go to the Desert Storm section and follow the links to the 4-67 AR Personal History page (http://www.3ad.org/ds_3bde/67ar_4/67ar_4_personal_histories.htm) There you will find a fascinating and detailed Army War College paper written by that unit's commander, LTC Tim Reischl. The paper recounts how the Bandit battalion (an M1A1 tank battalion) prepared, deployed, conducted combat operations and then re-deployed back to Germany.

Just a reminder that we are always looking for personal narratives and/or pictures from DS veterans to post on our pages. A personal narrative does not need to be as complex as a War College paper…it can be just a few paragraphs recounting your personal experiences. Note the point-of-contact information on each page if you are interested in contributing to our site. Thanks and Happy Holidays.

I am Norwegian. Being married to a sergeant, I spent 1961 and '62 in Friedberg, living in Grant Avenue, Bad Nauheim. April of this year I returned to Friedberg for a visit and have totally spent 4 months in the city. It was really strange to be back after 39 years, but so enjoyable, bringing back good memories.

Wishing you and all the G.I.s stationed in Friedberg a Merry Christmas and ALL THE BEST in the coming year!

Inger

I was a member of the Trutle Platoon from 1/B/2/32AR. I am now the Director of Volunteer Services for the largest private Child Care Organization in Kentucky. I miss the days spent with the Spearhead. Those were the days when we the Army had cohesion in the units. I speak with current members of the Army and they do not seem to understand the loyalty we all had to our fellow soldier and to the Army.

I am disabled now, but I look back on my time in the Army with great fondness and Pride.

Please feel free to add my e-mail address to the Turtle Platoon registry and I look forward to reading all of the great stories contained in this site.

I would like to hear if there is an interest out there for a reunion of Desert Storm Soldiers who served in 3AD. I for one would love to see some of those guys and remember those good old days.

Ready First!!

Wishing all Spearheaders of all eras a Merry Christmas and the best for the upcoming New Year. This soon-to-be-past year will not be soon forgotten, nor should it be. I'm thinking that a lot of us have learned more about ourselves in the last 3 months than in most of our lifetimes. I am holding my wife and family a little bit tighter and longer these days and am thankful for them all. My friends are more special to me than I realized. Nothing else really comes closer than those points, and I have no doubt that I am not alone with these thoughts and feelings. God Bless All. Phil Mitchell, Everett, WA

I was there from 87 to 88. Looking for old friends Paul Hall, Kevin Dix, Scott Mues, Bill Moes, Big "E", anyone from that time period. Like to hear what has happened to people from that time. Some people in other company might remember me from Sig Maint. People called me "Jonesy". I fixed the radios and intercom systems and about anything else that has given to me. I would realy like to hear from CWO 2 Kathy Summers. I came back to the states and home to Maryland. I now live in Baltimore. I have been in "Rolling Thunder" in Washington and at that time, I felt good about the time I served. All veterans need to stick together. We are the only ones that care.

Your site is interesting to me because my father was a 3rd Armored vet. He was in the 3rd AD from Camp Polk to the end of WW II when he was sent home. His name was Sgt. N.C. May and he was in Service Company. I was interested in contacting anyone that might have served with or known him during that time. As far as I know he didn't keep in contact with his Army buddies after the war.

I was in 3d Armored from Feb 20, 1968 – Feb 19, 1970. During those 2 years I hated every minute and at the same time thanked God that I wasn't sent to Nam! I got a European out and travelled around for 3+ months before returning to the states – CONUS. As soon as I landed on good old US soil, I started to miss my second home away from home – HANAU. Since I was married and my wife was with me, we lived on the ecomony in a 2 room apt and had to share the bathroom with the people next door. After a few years back home, we revisited the old places and renewed "old friendships" with the town, the people and country side. We invited our Germany landlords over for a visit and they came a few times to visit us in the states. The last time we were in Germany was in 1992, look's like it's time to go again. I would love to get together with some of my old buddies from Hanau…if you're out there, send me an email.

April 1974 I was in the redeye section with the 3rd Sqd. 12th CAV. we were at Graf. playing "taxi" as always. Our section leader LT Duffy was put in charge of qualifing the mortars for all 3 troops (A trp, B trp, & C trp.). I was driving LT Duffy around leading the mortar group to pick up the mortar rounds, fuses, and leading there 113's to the firing point. I would monitor the radios for both the Sqd. net and range control. They would do their set up and try to put rounds on targets on the main impact range. The LT had to check each and every charge and setting on the tube to verify the settings of each round fired. I heard earlier (1963?) and arty unit over shot the range and killed a number of guys from my unit. So the LT was "into" this effort. We did this for about 6 weeks. Then it's test day, the testing group (a LT and a SSG) had given LT Duffy a set of coordinates for a firing position and we were to be met by them there the next day. The problem was the coordinates they gave put us out in the woods and NOT at a designated firing position. LT Duffy and the leader of the A troop mortars (SSG Trickle) were going round and round about if they had gotten the coordinates correctly. LT Duffy even had me go around with him to double check the area. About this time over the radio we hear the Sqd. net, our Sqd. commander LTC Maluer was wanting to know where we (the mortars) were. The base fumbles around abit and comes back to say LT Duffy is on a mortar test. The LTC explodes! "I KNOW LT Duffy is on a mortar test"! "Where is he located?". Duffy is now freaking! *G* We are driving to hell and gone trying to find the "correct" location. Now the LTC is calling LT Duffy directly, and Duffy won't answer! As we are driving along the tank trail looking, we see the LTC's command jeep heading right for us. Duffy is really freaking now! Tells me to drive off the road! There is about a 30" berm on the side but we take at about 10 mph! I lose my helmut, but the LTC doesn't see us. So we circle around and head back to the mortars. And again Duffy and Trickle have there heads together. Now off to the west about 100 meters we see a jeep with 2 people and they are standing around, and soon there after we see the LTC's jeep show up there. Now The LTC is calling Duffy again, and you can tell in his voice he's not a happy camper!!! Duffy swallows hard and tells me to answer the call. I ask what do you want me to tell him? He says "just tell him where we are." As I answer the LTC's call, the 1st thing he wants is the LT! But I tell him the LT is not there and I'm monitoring range control. So he ask where we are! I tell him were about 100 meter's to his left! I can see him snap his head around and come charging down the path (he didn't even end the radio transmission). Now Duffy and Trickle have there heads together with the grading team and the LTC was looking over there shoulders. Come to find out the graders had given Duffy the wrong coordinates, by one digit! That put us off by 100 meters!!! *G* We were right where we were told to be!! *L* And the LTC was all smiles after that, and the mortars for all 3 troops scored very high with there tests! Everyone was VERY HAPPY then, but man it was funny to see LT Duffy squirm!!! *L* As I was leaving the troop in Feb. 76 LT Duffy had made CPT. and was re-assigned. Glen if you every run across story, you know it's the truth!! *L* Give me a call and we can go over it again, in a warm dry place this time …eh? *LOL* Hi to all my redeye buddies, if you guys get smart enough to find this message give me a call! …chicken dinner on me! *LOL*

We served as the direct support maintenance unit for the firing systems of the M163A1 Vulcans as well as the Chapparall and FAAR radar systems. I was the shop officer from August 77 until about May of 79 and then finished my tour as Detachment XO. The unit was billeted across the street from the indoor rifle range on Armstrong Kaserne in Budingen. We were on the 3rd floor with 2 cav troops below us (C and D I believe of the 3/12). Our maintenance shop was the nearest to the street at the bottom of the hill just down from the Unit Police office. The kaserne at that time housed the 509th Ordnance Detachment, 3/61st ADA, 3/12th CAV, Echo Detachment/122d Maint. Bn and B Company/ 503rd Combat Aviation Bn.

Still waiting to hear from some of you HHC or BMO troops.I am very proud to have been the largest combat brigade outside of conus.Did we really know how close to WW3 we were? The friendships, the hardships.I must say,it was quite a party. As the singer Kenny Rogers sang, and i quote.Oh those memories from those days come gather round me.What I give if they could take me back in time.Oh it almost seems like yesterday.Where do the good times go.Life was so much easier,20 years ago.

I was stationed in several units within the 3rd AR Div. My job was unit/S-4 NCOIC. I served with alot of great soldiers in 13 years in Germany. My best memories are of building 9-227th Avn Spt Bn from the ground up. After leaving in 1993 I retired on 1 August 1994. COL Townsend was the commander during the building along with CSM Daniels. To anyone who remembers the good times, I would like to be back. Take care and god bless.

Father served SPEARHEAD: Wounded in France, Tank was fired upon: Never talked much about things but I have always wanted to know in what battle he was wounded in. Thomas Richard Gould, proud of the Spearhead to the end when he surcame to the wounds of the war. Maybe someone out there has some information about the 3rd Armored in which he served so proudly. I have read the history but would like in some way to know the people who he served with.

He is survived by his sons (Stephen J. Bero of Liverpool, NY and Paul J. Bero of Buffalo, NY) and daughters (Michele Decker of Syracuse, NY and Christine Boots of Kitchener, Ontario) as well as 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His wife (Teresa Wood) passed on in 1989. He often spoke of great admiration of Lieut. Col. William Cohen. Wow, this brings back memories, I was one of the few who had the honor of serving in 3 different units on Ayers Kaserne, though I did not treat all assignments as an honor at the time, I still had much growing up to do even though my heart was in the right place. To most of the guys at 5/5, even when things were bad it still was a LOT better than we thought. 503rd FSB, had some great moments with you people, and found out you were no different or "lesser" than my cav buds… Some of the women of 503rd were hard chargers! HHC 1st BDE, you guys gave me a great time during the summer of 90! I still remember smashing the course up with my CUCV during the wheeled vehicle rodeo! Last but not least, Major General "Wild Bill" Nash, you were the best officer I ever met in the Army, and in some ways like a dad to those of us that never had one. I still remember you calling me over and wanting to talk to me after I got my EFMB, do you remember that one? How about the night I was blitzed at the carnival? Hehehehe… I still stayed friends with Steve Crane (your driver) and even went to his house when I went to PLDC at Ft. Knox. in 1993. I made commandant's list, sir, for what it's worth… I only wish that you had been 3 corps C.O. in 1994 at Ft. hood, TX… You deserved that 3rd star and so much more….

A lot more words I could say, but I need to save room for the other people, lol…

3rd AD, your memory lives on in our hearts and minds…

Jack Morris

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!! I remember Thanksgiving of 85. Pulled guard duty at the motor pool in Gelnhausen. Also had several inches of snow that night as I recall. The mess hall did put on a helluva spread, gotta give those guys credit. Have a good one and God bless Jim

I just spent a great week as a guest of SFC(ret) Booth at his home. I thought I'd see how many of you Bulldogs (Fit to Fight) were out there on "radio listening silence"-like me. Drop me a line, especially any of you who served with me when I was 1 Plt 2nd Sqd Ldr, 3rd Plt Sgt or were unfortunate enough to suffer with (or under) me as I muddled through the Ops Sgt position.

Few remember that John F. Kennedy gave a speech the day before his famous speech at the Berlin Wall, and that was to the 3AD at Fliegerhorst.

Like most of us serving in the 3AD then, I was there. However, I didn’t see very much as they put all the tall guys in front of the line. The tankers and infantry looked real good, but when the airborne stepped off it was something to see. Anyway, here’s some of what Kennedy said about that day. The quote is taken from the 22d Anniversary issue of SPEARHEAD, dated June 28, 1963.

TO CG, 3RD Armored Division

Please express my appreciation to all hands for one of the finest military formations I have seen. From beginning to end, including lunch with the non-commissioned officers, the visit was a most impressive and satisfying display for all of us. To the Army and Air Force and our Allies, many thanks. John F. Kennedy

I arrived in country 6 December 1972 and rotated home on 24 Febuary 1975. I saw alot of Graf… and Hoenfells(check the spelling)and a couple of trips to Wildflecken. I spent about a year in HHC as a truck driver at which time I must have pissed someone off and was assigned to Co C as a loader on a M60A1. I loaded for a gunner named Andrews who was quite possibly the best gunner I saw while on active duty. After about 6 months as a loader I went to CSC and was assigned to the 4.2 Mortar Plt. While in the Mortar Plt I was a jeep driver for the Plt Leader whose Name was 1st Lt. Greg Fontenot. I beleive he later was promoted to Capt and was a CO for one of the line companies. I have attempted to contact Lt. Fontenot by the way of E-Mail and what not but have not been able to do so. If anyone could help with a e-mail for him I would appreciate it. I have a lot of good memories working for him. I saw him make some very ethical decision that has help me make the same good decisions later in life.

Memorial Day last year:

I had to yank an American Flag out from under some lady's foot-her lazy brat of a child couldn't be bothered to hold it, so she placed it on the sidewalk and then held it with her foot..

Memorial Day this year, the guy they had in the parade in Desert BDU's, didn't have a combat patch…

What was really weird was the morning of Sept 11th, many people at work who know I was in the Gulf, inquired as to my reserve status, if I could be called back to Active Duty [no].

Then the day before Veteran's Day, they broadcast over the PA system "veterans are among your co-workers and family, say thanks when you see them". Not a word from these same people.

To all Associates of the 3rd Armored Division, I wish you a Peaceful and Happy Thanksgiving. The horrible events of September have re-defined the meaning of Family, Friendship, and Patriotism to millions of people in the United States. It is my fervent hope and prayer that the families of those lost in the insanity of Sepetmber 11, 2001, will soon find closure and some semblance of peace within themselves. God Bless each and every one of them. As we approach Veterans Day, please turn your thoughts and prayers toward those in uniform from every country who are actively seeking out those who would commit such acts of terrorism in the name of . . . .what? God Bless America and all peaceful citizens of the world. Excuse the soapbox, please; it's just what I was raised to believe.

Phil Mitchell SFC, USAR (ret.)

Swell site. Glad to see some veterans have taken an interest in the preservation of an honored and noble Division. There may come another day when "Spearhead" will once again gain the active list. Until then many can only dream.

Hello,

I am trying to get any information on my father's service.

His name was James Francis Hughes III, and I believe he served with 3AD for two years during the Korean War. He talked about his service at Ft. Knox, and also Ft. Sill OK.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

David R. Hughes

I was never in a unit. My Dad met my Mom in Hanau, he a US soldier, sha German national, me a German born half and half Army brat. Hanau is my hometown and still have family there although lost contact since Mom and Dad passed. Were there a number of different times during Dad's military career. My heart is still and always will be in Hanau. Grand parents owned a resteraunt call Zum Friegericht located in from of the Dunlop factory. We also lived in Bad Nauheim, Butzbach and Giessen. I went to high school at Frankfurt High. Would love to hear from anyone in reference to Hanau, I have many memories and photos. Dad was in B-co 3rd of the 32nd. 3rd Armor Division. His name was Charles S. Seiler. My hero. Henry Seiler

Great idea. I visited the kaserne in Gelnhausen five times since 1995 (On my way to and from Singapore). Each time I saw more of it torn away(Church, EM Club, etc.) and it was sad.

The Sergeant Major I worked under was the finest man I ever met. His name was William Hardin. I've often wondered if he was still alive. If he were it would probably surprise him that later on as an Advertising copywriter I created the Be All You Can Be theme line (proof on request) for the US Army. He was my inspiration for creating that line.

Until recently, I still had two close friends from those days: One died last year (Ron Bissel) Earl Carter

I was in HHB, 1st 32nd Field Artillery on Fliegerhorst Kaserne in Hanua, Germany from Jan 77 – Jan 80. The battalion was a Lance missle battalion. HHB included, A, B and C batteries. If you were a soldier who knew me, please write. I am looking for SP5 Crawford. He was from NY, and when my family and I visited NY I wanted to look him up. I still talk to Gary Jackson. Want to know what happened to many of the fallas.

Like many others, I would like to thanks for this Site! Unfortunately I coulnd`t find who I was looking for…but there are a few familiar names on that list. I used to live in the Friedberg Area and had lots of Friends in 1-36, 5-18, 4-67 etc. The Ayers Kaserne has been closed in 1998, and the Units are in Friedberg and in Giessen now. Thanks again for this Site Sandy

I was assigned to 143rd sig bn only 2 weeks prior to deploying to southwest asia. I am writing now to find out, 10 years later, if the bn ever received any awards because of desert shield/storm? One must understand that I went back to Germany 17 Jun 91, took some leave, helped bring our vehicles back to Drake-Edwards Kaserne. But, by 05 Oct 91 I was in BNCOC at FT Gordon. Upon completion of BNCOC, and receiving my Distinguished Honor Graduate certificate, I reported back to 1AD, because of my longevity, and was told that 3AD basically ceased to exist, because of drawdown. I am requesting any info about any awards that we may be privy to. I am sorry that I do not have an e-mail account or web address, yet. I shall have one soon

Speaking of Rock bands, there used to be a story that all the members of the 80's "hair" band RATT had been in the Signal Corps, specifically Radio and Teletype [RATT]. If you look closely at the "Round and Round" video, they are all wearing dog tags around their necks. I can see one guy wearing them just to look cool, but 5? More than coincidence? We were never able to confirm this one. Weitekamp you out there with an answer?

This was my first unit in and I had alot of fun there. I got a Arcom as a E-1 1000 point crew on Table VIII. Just one question though I had heard a rumor about Axl Rose from Guns and Roses being in 1-32 is this true? He does have a tattoo of the unit crest on his left arm. Thanks

Axel was with 2/32 in the early to mid 80's. Rumor has it that his real name was Bailey and that he achieved the rank of SGT. He was supposivly booted out of the service by his battalion commander. I have been told that Guns and Roses later offered to do a free concert at the Rock, but his old Battalion Commander was then the Brigade Commander and he did not feel Axel was the kind of role model he wanted to display in front of his men. I would love to know more of the story if any of you can tell it. What I have just stated has been told to me by 3 different people from that period. And yes, Axel does have a Victory or Death Crest tattooed on his arm.

Hi Solders and Families! I'm a daughter of a Spearhead soldier. Charles Robert Patterson, from Alexis, Illinois. My dad died in 1982, my mom is 2001. I'm now the family archivist! My dad took many photos during his time in the army. I hope someday to get them identified is possible. There are photos of England, Germany, France(?). Lots of buddies pictures. Some have information on the back. I'll find out more info about his unit when I go back through the boxes of wonderful papers, etc. Till then…Brenda

I became a member of the Spearhead association back 1982…I was told that it was a lifetime membership.Do you know if that association is even still in existance?

The Spearhead Association was a function of the 3d Armored Division that was run by the Division. When the Army deactivated the 3AD, the organization ceased to exist. Our organization is not associated with the Spearhead Association.

I was part of the 3rd armor division until its dissolution and transfer to the 1st armor division and continued with the 1st armored division until I quit the military in 1994. ('90-94) I was stationed at Ray Barracks in Friedburg, Germany the entire time. I left Germany after '94 and returned to the states to study at Ohio State. After roughly 6 six years in the states I have returned to Germany to live in the Friedburg area again. I work in Frankfurt for a large German bank as a IT purchasing manager. Unfornutaly, I have lost all contact to my buddies from those days (in support platoon for example) and it would be great to talk to them again. I had a wonderful experience in the army and did many things. I rose to the rank of SGT in the 4 years I was active and for last last year I enjoyed the status as a Tank Gunner under SSG Thomas Troupe whom, I owe alot professionally and personally. I won't forget that guy, even though we haven't had any contact since.

Hi all

I was an E5 Vulcan gunner back then out of a 5/3 Wackernheim, Germany supporting the B 4/67 TAC. I am now CO of HHC, 122 SIG BN, CP Red Cloud, Korea. My fondest (NOT!) memory of the Gulf was when we conducted the lateral passgae of lines with 1 AD? and they crossed right to left in front of our lines. Coincidentally, my M1632A2 Vulcan APC caught fire as my duffel bag short circuited the fuel pod's electrical flame thrower connection. Yeah, SSG Wolfgang was screaming that day! I still have that burned duffel… And fond memories of my PLT and the 3AD folks we quickly bonded with!

Was stationed at Ayers Kaserne during the first wave of the buildup because of the Wall going up. Almost 40 yrs have passed, but this site has brought back a lot of memories. Although I'm getting old, I still remmember guys like Noel Marsden, Bill Twomey, Frank O'Sullivan[ 2 of them ],Mchugh from Boston, and Tonner. Lots of time spent in the E.M. Club drinking Licher. Sure would like to here from someone. This outfit may have been the best the Army has ever seen, The Third Armored Division. Sgt. Borelli was acting 1st Sgt. at the time in Charlie Company. Pfc. Norris and Farrell were there too. Not too many people my age have computers to find this site. Great site.

Have been in touch with a few other Red Lion troops since I started leaving messages here. Would be great to get in touch with others. I previously listed my book "Faraway Thunder: A Journey through Army Life & the Gulf War", here and since then the Association store has listed it. It's pretty much a history of the Red Lion battalion, and of 1st Brigade and 3rd AD, from when I came to the battalion in 88 through our experiences in the Gulf. The book tells it like it was, at least from the perspective of an enlisted soldier like myself. I tried to put some humor in it, as well as the serious and deadly battles as we engaged the Tawakalna Division of the Republican Guard. You'll recognize a lot of the characters if you were in the Red Lions, or even first brigade and the division as a whole. You can get it at the Association Store or at Amazon.com. At Amazon.com just go to books and type in faraway thunder, or my name. Hope those that have read it enjoyed it. Any comments, good or bad, would be great to hear!

Like Ray Upton I don' remember calling Ayers Kaserne "The Rock". "KG" was the more popular used term at the time.. When I first arrived by train from Bermerhaven (After an nice ocean cruise on the Gen. Maurice Rose) I spent a couple of days at Drake Kaserne awaiting an assignment. When I found out I would be going to the 3-36 Inf the clerk said You don't want to go to "The Rock" those guys spend most of the year in the field! Tell them you can type that might get you out of it. Being the good Boy Scout and camper that I was it became an interesting experience. We did spend time in the field and slept in the snow a few times. Even slept in a snow fort with out own TA-312 on "Gallant Sword". Does anyone remember that one and "Yellow Leg"? The photo lab in the Service Club helped me get started with my career, during my stay at "KG" davesmithphoto.com As one can see from reading this Guestbook we are all proud to have had the "Rock/KG" been part of our life experience.

Hey, great site, Can't find any information about TF33En anywhere. I was a PFC during Saudi, currently a SSG stationed at Ft Bragg. I'm honored to have served with the "Spearhead" won't forget that we held the line north of Safwan after everyone else went South! Keep up the good work!

Served as an M-2 Bradley gunner (A21) during operation Desert Storm, during the period of 24 December 90 to 18 May 91. I was participant of all major engagements, including the Battle of 73 Easting.

I was awarded the Combat Infantrymans Badge and the Army Commendation Medal with a "V" device; currently I served in the Army reserves as a military policeman with the 301st MP Co.

But always a SPEARHEAD!

Activated the unit in 1955, rotated with Gyroscope in 1956. Happy to see the old "All For One" is still active heraldry.

My father (deceased) was with the 36AIR in WWII. I am trying to locate information about that particular unit's history from France through the end of the War. I now have my own son who is interested in his grandpa's WWII experiences. Please help me if you can.

I was a Scout on the M113s, before we had Bradleys, and I even spent 6 months as a "Tanker" – our unit was short of them at the time. I spent many a nights in "the woods". I always wondered what became of old "Swingin Budingen", and hope to go back over and visit the area soon. I didn't get much of a chance to see Europe back then – too many alerts and gunnery ranges. If anyone was there during the same period, I am trying to find pictures from then.

I've finally heard from some "old" friends from 5/503 MP. COL Mary Frels, SFC Ernest Frazier, John Green, George Dickson and SSG(P)Ron Hinchman to be exact. Would like to hear from other people who were with us. I'm getting ready to go to Germany again (3rd time). Look around this site! I saw some pictures of Drake Gate and Maargraten 1990. Brought back some great memories. Like when someone who shall remain anonymous set off the ground barricade and lifted an ambulance off the ground. Oops! Would like to hear from friends around the Div HQ, 122MSB, and 143d. We all had fun at the Drake Club together. Be nice to see how you all are doing. Best of luck! SCOTT

Re: Steve Depuy’s earlier comments:

I guess it really depended on which unit you were assigned to. There was always that ‘luck of the draw’ thing when it came to unit assignments. The great unknown. I myself had a direct assignment to the 3AD; it was something I had requested when I enlisted. Why? Hell, I am to this day not sure. The only guy I knew who was in the 3AD was on the ‘Rock’ with 2/36 Inf and got chaptered out! He told me “Don’t join the Army, don’t get assigned to the 3AD, and whatever happens don’t EVER go to a place called the ‘Rock’”. I guess I wasn’t into taking advice at that time…. In my unit (CSC 3/36 Inf, Scout Plt.) we had a very high state of morale. I don’t think we were under any illusions with regard to our survivability should the proverbial “poop” hit the fan (we too had heard that story about the Pentagon’s war games that gave us about 3 minutes to survive the initial Soviet assault) and yet we were with that unique blindness of youth willing to take that chance that we would survive while others did not. We did things a little different in my unit. We went up to our border positions every ninety days as opposed to the twice a year in other units (our platoon Sgt. went up once a month to inspect the plt’s area of responsibility). We even walked ‘backwards’ from the border to our positions behind the ‘Cav’ to give us a better understanding of how the enemy would ‘see’ our positions. The small village (I can no longer recollect its name) was plotted for ‘selective’ destruction to create obstacles by blowing up selected houses. I can still recall the looks of dismay from those Germans who understood English when we took our walk throughs, pointing to this house and that “We’ll blow that one and that one…” We had thirty minutes to get out the main gate ‘bag and baggage’ during alerts; we normally did it in twenty. We won the privilege of wearing the ‘distinguished’ flash over our Scout Platoon patch when we won best in Division during the Artep in 1976; this was a source of great pride in my Plt. We even allowed to wear ‘cammies’ (not BDU’s which weren’t around then) when we went to the field. We consistently out preformed other units and were routinely assigned as ‘aggressors’ during field exercises. And yet, eight members of my Plt were ‘chaptered’ out for drug or alcohol reasons while I was there. We never even got to take the bayonets out of the arms room because ‘higher’ was afraid we would stab each other. The only people I knew who re-enlisted were those who did so to get off the ‘Rock’! I always though the re-up NCO must of felt like that guy in the Maytag commercials, because in my battalion anyway he didn’t get a lot of business… One last thought, does anyone remember reveille on the ‘Rock’? The recording sounded straight out of WW2 complete with all the scratches, I often wondered was it a record or tape? Scouts Out!

I am not sure if I listed the correct unit. I was a postal clerk at the Kasserne in Kirschgones. I remember arriving in Frankfurt, my MOS was a mortar man and somehow I wound up as a postal clerk. So I think my unit was Admin.

Gentlemen, My father Leon Wallace Berg Jr. (deceased) served with the Spearhead across Europe in WWII. He was wounded on Jan. 18. 1945 in Belgium and again on March 27, 1945 in Germany. He returned to 'normal' duty on May 25, 1945. I am trying to pass on his history to my son (16) and daughter (13). I have his scrapbook.

Many thanks to the men whom have "visited their past" to document and define the history I hope this country never forgets!

God Bless You all for your service

Mike Berg Houston, Texas (Friendswood)
