I'm trying to locate a very close friend who was in the 2/32 7th inf division in 1977. We were later transferred to 1/79 field artillery later in 1977 as forward observers. If anyone know a (SGT DANIEL SANCHEZ)please get in touch with me. I have looked for him for over 10 years and would like to get in touch with him.

thanks

Visited Ray Barracks in 1998 and was amazed at the changes that have been made since the 3 years I spent there. Was happy to find the Oasis and Tom Dooley Ratskellar still in place although under different names. Our battalion has a reunion every year. This year it was in Dallas, Texas. Contact me if you would like any information about the years I spent there.

Have someone approach me who is looking for a picture of the "Outlaws" mascot that used to hang in front of HHC 2/32. Does anyone have a photo of this or a drawing of some kind. If so, please contact me.

On another subject, members of the Association can subscribe to an e-mail service called skuttlebutt. It is an e-mail mass program that allows members to communicate with each other and talk about current events, tell old stories and such. You can not send attachments on skuttlebutt, it is strictly an e-mail forum. If you would like to be added and you are a member of the Association, contact me and I can have you added to the list.

I served as an MP with the A company at 1st Brigade, Ayers Kaserne from August 1966 to April 1968. We spent much of our time at Graf or Hoenfels, not to mention some very cold duty up near the Fulda Gap. Those were some good times. Afterwards, I spent a year with the 532nd MP Co at Ft. Dix, NJ, just prior to leaving active duty.

For those of you who spend a lot of time combing through guestbook entries looking for old friends, many of the Unit Websites now have rosters in them for the units that contain the e-mail address's of people who have left their name and e-mail address here for old friends to find them. If you would like to have your name added to a list, contact the webmaster for that unit or leave a guestbook entry with your name, unit, years served and e-mail address. This makes it much easier to find people. If you were in a unit that is not listed yet or does not have a roster, we are working on getting them all so keep checking back. We have also added many new units in the unti websites sections. We are building the rosters for those units and looking for people to work them. If you have not looked at the unit websites section for a while, you may find many new things in there.

I served at the McNair Kaserne across the street from Michael Baracks 533rd MI. You will not believe what they have done to our Kaserne and the chapel and other facilities. When I saw it, I cried. I was stationed there Oct 1989 – June 1991. I had the best time of my life there. Now 17th is in Kitzingen (Larson Kaserne) and 32nd Sig is at Kelley Baracks in Darmstadt where I am now. I may be able to get pictures of those areas now. The high wall that used to surround Michael Baracks is torn down. There are these two new buildings 2 stories high where the wall stood on the corner. The motorpool is gone. Oh, don't get me started. I miss it all too much! If anyone has photos of McNair, let me know! Email me if you care to talk about the great old days. You should see the wreck it is now!

April 1974 I was serving in the Redeye section with the 3/12 CAV. We were in Graf to support the line troops qualifying there M551 tanks. The Redeye section was pretty much a taxi cab service most of the time. We would drop off and pick up the range control officer, take supplies to the units in the field, and we would follow the tracks down range with the graders when they were doing live fire. We were billeted with the medics during period, and got to know everybody in the medics pretty well. As I stated at frist, it was April and I'm at range 80. They are doing final firing to see if the tanks qualify or not. Everybody that's anybody is up in the tower …James Schlesinger (sec. of Defence) Gen. Alexander Haig (Div. Commander) the Sec. of the Army (don't remember his name) and our Sqd. Commander LTC. Maluer. The very frist enaggemnt was the stationary truck, the tanks would enage this with the coax machine gun or the .50 cal. I would drive a grading SGT. out (after the tank when down range) so he could count the bullet holes. then back to the tower to wait until the next tank would come up. They were averaging one tank every 45 min.s to an hour. It was pretty cold there! Our SQD. Commander wouldn't let us have any canvas on the jeeps because we HAD to be tactical! So… I was freezing my ass off! After about 3 tanks had gone through, I noticed one of the "cracker box" ambulances had smoke coming out of the heater exhaust pipe. SO… I figured I could crawl inside with my NEW medic buddies and warm up between tank runs. I go over and try to open the door, it was locked, but I hear "who is it?". I said "Hey man it's me Mark, open up!" I heard "He's cool." and they un-lock the door and I start in. I come to a dead stop about half way in, there is a VERY stronge odor of hashish! I say "You guys are crazy! Do you know how's up in that tower!" They just look at me and finally say "Who?" I just look at them a second and back out not saying a word. It was now OK to freeze my ass off in my jeep!!! *G* I relay this story not to downgrade any thing about the Army or the Spearhead! I look back on my Army days with fond memories! But there were problems facing the Army at the time …Drugs were one of them. By the way… The medics never got caught! *G* A special Hello to all my old Redeye buddies … LT. Duffy, SSG. Matthews, Dave "Mo" Molin, Phillip Lovely, Dave "Andy" Anderson, John Cartwright, John Nickles, Jim Douthit, & "Buzzard"

I just wanted to say that I am hurt and very P/O about what had happen this past week. God has a way to bring people to their knees, in which he did. The reason I say this is because we have put so many things in front of God, like sports, and the like. We also have taken prayer and "the pledge of allegiance" out of our school, where our youth need it. It seems that every time we get into deep trouble, like this, thats when we look for God. We need God all the the time, good times and bad. I know I sound fustrated and I ask your forgiveness. I guess that we all have to realize thatthings happen but God is there for us. I know that our country will stand together and we shall over-come. As the Army flag say;s "THIS WE'LL DEFEND. God bless you all.

There will be so many sad stories from the acts of war that occurred on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. What an unthinkable loss we have sustained. Being a career firefighter, the loss of over two hundred brother firefighters is felt so deeply and our prayers and thoughts are with these souls and their families.

In addition to the loss of firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel; many military and civilian personnel lost at the Pentagon will take a toll on our emotions. I just spoke with a Lieutenant here on our fire department who informed me of a personal loss for him. His brother-in-law, Lieutenant General Timothy J. Maude, was killed at his desk in the Pentagon attack. Gen Maude was a thirty-two year career soldier and was just 10 months away from a well deserved retirement.

God bless all of these lost public safety personnel, military personnel, and their families and God bless the military personnel who will be undertaking the operations necessary to send the perpetrators and their supporters to their judgement before the Almighty.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families affected by the tragedy in New York City and D.C. Most of us vets were trained to fight in a conventional war against a conventional foe. The war against terrorism is to be fought agaist a foe that is so mousey and cowardly who has total disregard for innocent human life. United We Stand, Divided We Fall. God Bless America!

Dear Veterans, Today we have seen what we so diligently strived to prevent. There is no blame to spread amoungst our national security forces, only support. We as veterans are the backbone of this great country. And as such we must rally to our nations aid. In the next few days if you see a flag flying high – tell whomever responsible that you are a vet and therefore are offended that it is not at half mast. Continue to aid fellow veterans, your neighbors, co-workers and even strangers. After all, we are a melting pot – and brothers in this great land. We are all Americans and must show that although they have destroyed a part of us they will never weaken us or our spirit. Justice will be served!

Thanks, nice website. I saw someone wearing a 3rd Spearhead (patch) uniform today in a California WalMart of all places — it made me decide to surf the web for info on my old unit. My husband Darrell Fuller and I both served in the 533rd. We'd be interested in hearing from any other individuals we knew while serving in Germany.

Thank you, sincerely… I believe life is a tangent. This tangent takes us from our origin to our ultimate end, and the bifurcations along the way are the pictures in the album. MY album is filled with the memories of my time in the 3rd, and my life is dominated by the lessons learned therein. I will be forever visited by the ghosts there…

My life would not have been on this road had it not been for the 3rd Armored Division. I am thankful.

Sincerely,

Shane McDaniel, Spc., A-Co, 2nd Bn. 67th Armored Regiment. June, 1987-Jan, 1990.

I just returned from the WWII Association's annual reunion in Peoria, Illinois. It was great to visit with the "founders" of the division and they were all very hospitable. They turned out almost 400 of their members for the reunion; add to that wives, widows, and guests and they had a huge group!

Steve Depuy and I discussed with them possibilities for our organizations to work together more closely, particularly on reunions. Of course the WWII folks are getting older and I think they could benefit from the efforts of our younger membership. Over the years they have done a terrific job for their membership and their association, but I got a general feeling that it is getting harder for them. At some point, it would be great if we could honor them and take some of the load off of them. We did come away with several membership applications from individuals and hopefully their new board will consider us if and when they start looking around for people to carry on their traditions.

I was one of the 6,800 drafties (US 54-173-755) that made up the 3rd Armor Division in 1955-1956.

In HQ Command Company-I am looking for: 1) Bob Isabell-Birmingham AL banker; 2) Jack Carlson-Austin TX estimator-"the only man that got a hardship discharge in 6 months, while driving a new Buick convertable."

In the 3rd Armor,45 AMB, Dental Section: 1) Hal Pilkington of Colorado; 2) Jack Formick of Harrisburg PA. 3) Orea Chestnut of Bakerfield CA,& 4)the other 20 friends, whose names have slipped away.

At the end of our tour of duty, both Walley Smith and I were working in the dental clinic at Kirch Göns(?).

Prior to coming home, we were returned to Gibbs Kaserne-Frankfort where we "piss-ant" shovels-full of dirt across the road, at some dependent housing area (harshment of the US-troops to the very end).

After service, Walley & I graduated from KCMO dental school in 1961.

Just to say that it is great to be back here in Gelnhausen after 40 years to the Month..This makes the 2nd time that I have returned here sense 1964.One note about the post, there is nothing the same. It has all been rebuilt. When I returned here in 94 it was not so bad, but now it is all different Just like all good things, it must come to an end someday, just like my vacation here, I must return to the states on Aug. 30th. And if GOD is willing, I will return again in a few years to see the completion of the post. Will write more later when I get home

Still have my drivers licence, expired, and would love to drive one again (:>). Would pay for the gas! Have been in touch with Jim Yoho and just e-mailed Tom Hermann. would like to here from anyone else in the D/C section, B company, 3-36 Inf, other D/C sections etc. I have always wondered how Stewart and Easterling fared in Viet Nam?

I went to the internet to look up some history on Schloss Kaserne in Butzbach. According to what I read it looks like the 3rd AD were the only units to be housed there. The 16th went to Butzbach in Sept.1961 and was stationed at said barracks. This can be verified athttp://3dsignalbrigade.hood.army.mil/16thSigBat/index.htm That gives a complete history of the 16th and makes for some interesting reading. I also know that the 2nd Bn. of the 18th Artillary was there at the same time the 16th Sig. was. The 3rd AD was about three miles from Butzbac at Kirch Goins (closest to Butzbach). I don't want to make anyone mad but there were lots of guys just like me that spent a portion of our lives there. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would feel this way.I knew a few of the guys with the 3rd AD and all were really great guys. I have been in touch with some of the men I served with and would like to contact more. Anyone who was part of the 16th, no matter when, please e-mail me. I think you have a fine web site and I will visit often. Note: I was at Butzbach 1962-64 Also it looks like they tore down the old structures…Is Uncle Sam's boys still ther or have the germans taken over? Would like to know. Thanks for letting me visit.

I'm not sure when the 16th moved onto schloss kaserne…they were there when I arrived. The 2nd Bn. of the 18th artillary was also located at that post…plus a medical detachment. The closet the 3rd Arm. Div. was at Kirch Goins about 3 miles from Butzbach. Correction: the 16th moved to butzbach Sept. 1961. This can be verified by going to http://3dsignalbrigade.hood.army.mil/16thSigBat/index.htm….that gives a complete history of the 16th. I loved the 16th and really liked Butzbach. I just hate to see us left out of the picture when presenting the history of schloss kaserne. I'm not trying to make anyone mad. Just giving the facts. Also I was a one termer but still I feel I will always be part of the 16th. I also noticed on the internet that the old barracks have been replaced. Is Uncle Sam still housed there? I wanted to go back one day and see again what it was like. Now…I don't know. Just won't be the same!

I was not with the 3rd AD, I was with the 3/5th Cav when I was with the 9th Infantry Division from 1968-1969. Also, the 3/5th Cav was attached to the brigade I was in when I was with Co C, 1st Bn, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division from 1966-1967.

I am the Webmaster for the 3/5th Cav-Vietnam and just in the last week have found out that the Cav is with the 3rd AD and they participated in Desert Storm. I am looking forward to including data about the 3/5th actions in Desert Storm to our site. We were known as "The Bastard Cav" while in Vietnam because the Cav was all over Vietnam with many units to include Marine units up on the DMZ. I will also include links to you website and please include ours in your site.

I look forward to any future work to let the citizens of the United States what a proud and honorable unit the 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry always been in the United States Army. The preceding statement also includes and 5th Cavalry unit as we fought battles in Vietnam with other 5th Cav units.

Hello Spearheaders – especially Sappers. I was with many units in Germany before the wall came down. Loved Deutschland so much I stayed for 10 years. I'm always looking for old buddies & leaders. If anyone knows where I can reach them let me know. THANX. SGT Joe Naeole(Hawaii). 1SG Bogan (?), SSG Ronnie Taylor(Georgia), SGT Johnny O Kilpatric(Alabama), SP4 Richard (boomer) Blumling (Penn), Christopher Burchfield (N.C. ?) I often wish I'd stayed in longer – but … its funny how we forget the bad times & remember only the "glory days". Future generations need to know what veterans did, in war & in peace, to secure our way of life. Army buddies are for life. Essayons – FIDO

In reference to the message left shortly prior to this one, I want to assure everyone that no-one gets peoples e-mail address's from the Association data base. Unfortunately, we can not stop people from going through the guestbook and copying address's. The solution might be to post the address of anyone who does this to you on the guestbook and we can flood that person back with annoying messages ourselves. I don't know what else we can do, one of the problems about living in a Democracy I guess. 🙂

My father James Albert DeLeo landed on Omaha Beach with the Third Armored Division. He was a member of a Half-Track crew. He was blown up by a morter shell, shortly after, and was shipped home. I do not know his company. He passed away in 1984, and I found your web site, thinking I might find out some information on the unit he served in.

I was in 2d Platoon, 6th Section Assistant Gunner (AG).  I'm looking for some other spearheaders that served in my unit they were the best groups of guys around and also dependable they always found a way of making it a great time even during the rigorous times of inspections and clean up after coming out of the field for a week. PFC Schewe, PFC Nelson, PFC Arredondo, and can't forget PFC Williams otherwise known as Chill Will also Metichician we just called him Aplhabet because we couldn't get his name right no matter what he did to help us he was one of my best friends there we even went around Ray Barracks taking up a collection for Earthquake victims in his home country of Armenia in Dec 88. helped raise about 5000 dollars for the Red Cross. and he even took me to a Iranian restaurant in Frankfurt. scared the hell out of me.

It appears that the Colonel Jerry Rutherford identified on page 324 of Colin Powell’s 1995 autobiography MY AMERICAN JOURNEY (NY: Random House) is the same Jerry Rutherford who, as a MG, was the 3AD’s last commander. GEN Powell had taken command of V Corps in 1986. On page 324 he refers to being in his “command center with my senior officers war-gaming an 8th Guards Army attack.” Powell continues, “My G-3, Colonel Jerry Rutherford, was at the map board with a pointer explaining that if the enemy crossed the Haune and the Fulda rivers heading toward the Vogelsberg mountains, they would then be into the valley of the Main River. From there the terrain was flat, giving them a clear shot all the way to Wiesbaden and the bridges over the Rhine River. NATO forces would be cut in half, and the enemy could swing north all the way to the English Channel. ‘So our last defensible position is the Vogelsberg range,’ Rutherford explained, ‘and at that time it may be necessary to ask for release of nukes.’ ”

Steve, bracketing your time of service, the Army might be called “The Once and Future Army”. The US Army in Europe peaked out in troop numbers in 1962, with about 280,000 (the highest number in Cold War history). Some of that was the result of tour of duty extensions due to the Berlin Crisis of 1961, plus the build-up caused by that crisis, plus another build-up that was begun just before then, in the Spring of 1961 after Kennedy became President. Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev saber/sabre rattled on Berlin from about 1957 on into 1963 (I recall the nightly Berlin to Gelnhausen land line telephone commo checks in 1963 and the environment of concern about the path of those telephone wires through East Germany being cut as a precursor to something unpleasant.). Within the space of 3 years during those times occurred the Berlin Crisis (Fall 61); USAREUR’s high alert during the Cuban Crisis (Oct ’62) & President Kennedy’s assassination (Nov ’63). Two events in 1964 seem to have confirmed a change in course from that 3 year time of relatively high tension in the 3AD area between Frankfurt and Fulda. The first was the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in August 1964, which presaged a change in focus from Europe to SE Asia. The second incident was Khruschev’s downfall in October 1964. Both events contributed to the shifting of focus away from Europe and toward SE Asia. I experienced a bit of that shift when I reported to Ft Lewis WA in OCT ’64 for my last few months in the Army. I quickly learned that several members of my new company (“C” Company), 124th SIG BN, 4ID, had been rotating back & forth to “SE Asia” (translation: they were participating in the early build up). I also learned a nice Army rumor: that because of my “critical” MOS I would likely be extended due to build up needs in that place called “SE Asia” ( the strength of the rumors increased each time the VC did damage to a US installation in SVN – VC sappers were going after parked aircraft in an increasing frequency.). I thought back to some of the troops I had first met in early September 1962 in Gelnhausen, who had been caught up in the tour extension due to the Fall 1961 Berlin Crisis. They were not happy campers after one year of extended duty had gone by.

I have spent the past two weeks reflecting upon the first annual reunion. Some of the things shared with me still amaze me today. The difference of perspective from myself who was the brigade reenlistment clerk and and scout/driver for an M-113 during my 3 years, and Dan Merrit, who was a young company commander during the same time period is amazing. I only know what I saw around me, Dan saw what was coming. I don't ever remember thinking thoughts of not being willing to fight and give my life during those days, but I also did not have much expectation that I would live very long if we did have to fight. I mean, the Army themselves made a point to inform us how badly we were outnumbered. My APC had mechanical problems, we had no ammunition on post. Apart from firing at the indoor range on post, I don't remember getting to even fire my M-16 much let alone our heavier weapons. When we would have an alert, I would roll out in my vehicle with no ammunition. I would guard tanks with an empty rifle on guard duty. I had heard that all of our TOW and Dragon rounds were kept off post at another location. The skuttle butt we had heard was that the only ammo on base was small arms. I had always considered my service time one of the low points in our Army's history. Even in basic training, they did not teach us hand to hand combat. They told us if they got that close, we were dead. We ran one time in 13 weeks of basic training, we were not physically fit as we should have been. It was hard to feel good about what was around you. Then to hear Dan, he saw the changes in Army doctrine and was proud and encouraged at what he saw coming. He spoke of the changes in Army doctrines and how encouraged he was during the same time. Then I spoke to vets who were at the Rock in the 80's. They told me of being in the field 280 days out of the year. They told me of having pre-positions at the Fulda Gap which I never saw. They told me they had vehicle positions pre dug for them to roll into if the balloon went up. They told me of having to visit those positions every month. They told me of all of the firing they had to do at the range, day, night, rain, snow. I am sure they hated it at the time. But I was so proud of them, and the leadership of men like Dan Merritt. The depressed, poorly equipped and trained Army I served in became the greatest Army on the earth. All of that time in the field saved countless lives during Desert Storm as our people knew what to do and did it. It cost a lot of money to train you guys the way you were, but it was worth every penny. It makes me proud to think of they way we had a small part to play in helping you to get there. Thanks for the memories all of you shared and they great hope you gave me in our Army today.

I'm attempting to have a monument to General Rose erected in D.C. Please contact me if you support this project. Do you think a monument with him in his Command Jeep is cool or not. Let me know. Confusion over 3rd Armored and the 3rd Army of Patton has given George credit that should go to the Great Maurice Rose.

ED  Yes we need the monument to General Rose but this is not the forum for airing complaints. I edited out the rest of your comments. Kevin Guestbook Manager

HOOOO-AAHH!!! The First Annual 3rd AD Reunion was a blast, and my hat goes off to Steve, Kevin, and their families and associates who made it all possible. You all deserve a web-wide standing ovation for your efforts to bring together all those who came. For me, it was an excellent time; one of my old buddies from that time, Doug Strawser and his wife Bonnie, met Jeanne and I at Baltimore A/P and drove all of us up to the doin's. It was a very special time for us, as we were able to wax nostalgic about what SUPERTROOPS we were (I'm sure we were not alone there). The folks we met made it all the more enjoyable. Jim Cunningham and his wife Mildred . . it was great to see them again. Ike: he is a classic, and I hope I have an opportunity to see him again. Again, a rousing WELL DONE to the worker-bees that made it happen, and also to those who made it complete by BEING THERE!!

I agree with Phillip but all the credit for making the 1st A3ADV Reunion possible should go to Steve & Ellen Depuy. I look forward to next year & maybe we will have 500 people attend.

Kevin Colson – Guestbook Manager

I was the first platoon ldr of 1/48 Recon [later Scouts] when formed in 1963. Went back to 1/33 Armor as Scout Plt ldr & S-2. I've returned to Coleman Kaserne a couple of times but not since deactivation. Those were the most exciting and interesting 3 years of my life in Gelnhausen.I'm glad to see the organization keeping the 3d Armored alive in our memories.

Saw the posting below on troop ships and thought I'd add that I went over on the Geiger, which was later sold or given to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Sad to say, I think it has since been sold for scrap metal. BTW, I had my 19th birthday pulling guard duty somewhere in the N.Atlantic.

I served in Vietnam with the 3/5 Armored Cavalry in 1969 when the unit was op-con to the 101st ABN during "OPERATION APACHE SNOW" which was the A-Shau Valley-Hamburger Hill campaign. Upon return to CONUS I was stationed at Ft. Lewis with the 3rd ACR.The 3/5 Cav highly distinguished itself in Vietnam and our new official website can be accessed above for those troopers that are interested. To the Cavalry!

Never thought I'd see "The Rock" again. Isn't it strange to know that "The Rock" is no more. You would've thought that "The Rock" would've go on forever and ever. Yep, I know that I'm getting old now. No more American troops will ever know the honor- and pleasure -of being based at "The Rock" (LOL). I remember a lot of homesick people walking around with their "clipboards" and making that "gesture" with their forefinger and thumb saying "Short" and "Going back to the World". And all those "boots" hanging from those power lines. Yep, That seems 100 years ago.(LOL). You know what! I thing "The Rock" should be turned into a hotel- or something like that. So that if any fomer member of "The Rock" should ever want to go visit the place. They will be treated like royalty.(LOL). I mean. The German government needs to do something with it.

I have to second all of Steve Depuy's comments on the 1st Annual Reunion in Carlisle. It was a super good time! Everything went so smoothly, you would think these guys were professional event organizers. The day-trips to Carlisle Army Barracks and Aberdeen Proving Grounds were just terrific!

The Historical Institute at Carlisle is a most fascinating place with its historical holdings of books, papers, photos, unit patches and crests, and so many other things that trace the entire history of our country through its military services. The folks there were so generous with their time and it was so great to get that VIP treatment. But !WOW! did we ever get VIP treatment at Aberdeen.

Captain MacPherson, Lieutenant Turner, and Sergeant First Class Hanne really rolled out the red carpet with a private tour through the 203d Military Intelligence Battalion holdings of foreign weapons, equipment, and vehicles. I just can't credit these guys enough for their hospitality and the in-depth look at what their outfit does to contribute to the readiness of our armed forces.

The memorial service on Saturday morning was excellent and Steve Depuy, even if he won't admit it, did a bang up job with his memorial service speech. The color guard from PANG was a really nice touch even though the room was small due to our numbers for this first reunion for the association. I know we will be bigger next year in Louisville and maybe we can fill up some hotel's largest ballroom for this important service of remembrance.

But the greatest time of all and I think for all was the gathering of the veterans themselves. The comraderie, the stories, the memories; well, the only way to experience or explain that is to be there and be a part of it! Watch the website for information on next year's reunion as it becomes available and gets posted. Believe me, you will want to be a part of it and we want to see you there!

Just got home from our 1st Annual Reunion. So many people to thank. The Clarion Hotel in Carlisle. They treated us like relatives and gave us everything we could have ever asked for. Ken Shaffer for showing up on his own to help set up everything. Carl Erickson, for planning our day trip to Carlisle on Thursday and arranging the special treatment our group received. For Dennis Gaare, for taking our people through the Aberdeen Museum on Friday and then arranging a private showing of foreign military equipment through the 203d MI Bn. The guys received a day they will never forget. None of us will ever forget Mr. Ike Oglesby, the Jackie Robinson of the 3d Armored Division in my mind. Ike was a Captain and Company Commander in the 3d Armored Division in the 1950's when he was the only African American officer in the Division. He laid the ground for Colin Powell and men like him to follow. Ike was a WWII veteran who fought for our freedom with the Coast Guard, then after College, he fought for our country in Korea, then was part of the 3d Armored Division and they told the Communists no farther when they drew a line in Europe. He later was a school teacher and we loved our time with him. The stories he told like himself and Elvis Pressley having a tank race in the Motor Pool only to have the Bn CO waiting for them at the finish line early one Sunday AM are priceless treasures we will never forget. Dan Merritt and the great speech he gave Saturday night helping us all remember how we changed history helping to bring the Berlin Wall down by becoming the greatest Army in the World. Steve Kuhn flying in from Berlin to be with us for one day. Kevin Colson for preparing a great memorial service on Saturday. It was one of the most precious weeks of my life and I want to thank all of you for both coming and sharing your lives. John Prater cleaned up with the reunion raffles. John won 2 of the 5 cans of Licher Beer we gave away as well as the CCB crest. Dan Edgar won the Elvis Pressley GI Blues album. My son John Depuy won the Spearhead in the West, and then was thrilled as Ike and David Wolf, both WWII veterans autographed it for him. Doug Good won of the cans of Licher, Ken Shaffer won another. And I am embarrassed to say I won the last one. It had been sent to me by Kirk Callison this past spring. I donated it to the raffles and then won it back. It was a precious moment. And after asking his dad for 5 days, Wesley Gordon finally got his 3d Armored Division lighter. Wesley wanted one all week, then Saturday night, Wesley bought his dad the best copy of Spearhead in the West we had after his dad did not win one. How could a father say no after that. Thanks again to everyone, Beth Carson for bonding with my wife and helping a women who grew up a conservative Mennonite to feel at home in the middle of a military reunion. And all the rest of you for your conduct, the hotel had to be impressed with the way we behaved and many members of the staff were touched by our group. And last of all, thanks to the PANG 28th Infantry Division for sending a 4 man color guard for our memorial service. They we total professionals in their conduct and I believe they also left very informed about the Cold War with a new understanding of all we did.

I'm distressed over the trash heap of Nazi inspired columns masquerading as a WWII monument about to be forced onto the sacred ground of the national mall. It's to be built by a construction company controlled by a German firm that used slave labor during WWII. The architect was born a citizen of the Third Reich. The eyesore looks like it was designed by Hitler's architect, Albert Speer. Bob Dole and friends have raised $185 million for a $55 million dollar shrine, and won't say what they will do with the balance. This is a disgrace.

I came to the rock from Aberdeen Proving Grounds Maryland with a short trip to Fort Lee Virginia for ANCOC. I was very apprehensive about being assigned to an infantry battalion especially a battalion that refused to acknowledge any of my correspondence. I tried and tried to get someone to assign me a sponsor before I left the states to no avail. So you can see I didn't look forward to being assigned to a battalion that seemed to not care about incoming soldiers. Well was I ever surprised when I got to Butzbach for inprocessing. No one from 3/5 CAV would come to see me or return my calls. Finally after being assigned to Echo Company as the supply sgt, did I realize how busy these guys were. They spent so much time in the field that mail took forever to get to the right person. I served with Echo company until we deactivated for the second and final time. The company was broken up and assigned throughout the battalion. What a waste of good people. Echo company was the best assignment I ever had in twenty years of active service (four years with the Marines). This company won so many kudos and awards you would think we cheated or something. Echo was so full of top-notch troops and NCOs and the occasional officer, especially Tony Wood our Commander, he was the man. He had tears in his eyes the day Echo went away. I can say that if the Army could put together another company like Echo, 3/5 CAV, I would love to come back on active duty as their supply sgt. I was ruined after 3/5, I would measure every soldier, NCO and Officer I met afterwards against the troops from Echo, sadly very few could measure up. Love you guys and miss you a lot, if anyone from 3/5 wants to contact me here is my email; dcoates@sc.rr.com or colacoates@aol.com

Good morning. In May, the book "Chicken Soup for the Veterans' Soul" was published. I was fortunate to have a story about Sgt Lafayette Pool, my father, accepted for inclusion. Thank you for the fine job you have done with your website. My father would be very proud.

Arrived Aug 76 at Ray Barracks Friedberg. Assigned to CSC 1/36 Inf BN. This was my first time ever out of the US, and I don't mind saying that it was a little unsettling for me. But if I would have known, how I would have felt about Ray Barracks Germany 2years later (when it was time to leave, and go to my next duty station), I wouldn't have wasted the time I spent fretting about what was the most enjoyable, and most memorable time of my life up until that time. I enjoyed my time there so uch that upon my arriving at my next duty station I requested to be sent back to Germany for another three years upon my next rotation. And I got it1 I went right back to CSC 1/36. I have never had so much fun and never have I met a group of soldiers like the ones I got to know during my time there, outstanding all of them. I remember "Coco", "Pagan", "El Papucho "Ocon" and his brother "Escobar, Sam", "Fly", Burgos"'"Ayala" "George from NYC", "Mandy", "Ozuna", "Jimmenez" and many more. I was given the nickname "Yogi" if any of you are still around please write me I would be great. I've got many pictures of that time and place still and of many of you also. To those in charge of this site "GREAT JOB" and thanks for this site, it's great.

If some of my buddies from 1/32AR see this, please feel free to email me. I was in the Elvis Presley Batallion. I remember all that training at Graf, snow up my knees while pulling guard duty, partying along combat alley in Friedberg and Sachsenhausen in Frankfurt. Ah, those care free days!

I was a 91B who was lucky enough to become the Flight Surgeon's assistant on Fliegerhorst Kaserne until I left to the states in 93. The Apache pilots were always a riot, and some of the best people I've ever known. I assisted the Flight Sugeon (CPT W. Bruce Richmond) and handled paperwork for the FAA. Anyone who wants to talk about old times, and present-please contact me.

I wasn't in the 3rd Armored Division. I just wanted to make a comment. I was in Bamberg, Germany from 12 March 1960 to 8 January 1961, on a 280mm Cannon. I read where someone said they were garded by the infantry when they were out in the field. We were NEVER guarded by the Infantry when I was in the 80th.

Anyone who is not coming to the reunion that still wants a chance to win some Licher can still enter the raffle. Its too late to mail an entry as I will be at the reunion till the mail gets here. But up until Tuesday night, you can still purchase raffle tickets by either faxing a request at 717-336-0693 or calling me at 717-336-5168 and paying by credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. We have 5 cans of Licher to raffle off. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Include your mailing address so we can send you the beer if you win. A list of winners will be posted in the guestbook after the reunion. We are also raffling off a rare 3AD Combat Command B Crest, a copy of Elvis Pressly's album GI Blues, and a copy of Spearhead in the West, 1945 printing. All of these items can be viewed on the website.http://www.3ad.org/reunions/reunion_a3adv_1st_reunion_raffles.htm is the link to view the items. The reunion should be a blast, we don't have the number of people we hoped for but we have people coming from every corner of the States as well as Germany, and Greystone Communications will also be there filming interviews for a two hour documentory on the 3d Armored Division that is scheduled to air next year. Anyone who wants to attend yet can still drop in. If you want to partake in any of the meals, I must know by Wednesday morning as a final count must be given to the Hotel by then. I can be reached on my mobile number at 717-629-0993. Hope to see more of you there.

PS – A 3AD vet coming from Germany has promised to bring a case of Licher with him. I am sure he is going to be the most popular guy at the reunion. The rest of you who can't make it, I doubt if you can count on any being left over afterwards.

ROACH, I JUST READ YOUR POSTING, GOOD TO HEAR FROM ANOTHER ROCKHEAD FROM THE PAST. YOU ARE THE SECOND PERSON I HAVE SEEN ON THIS SITE THAT WAS ON THE ROCK DURING MY STINT. I REMEMBER THE DAY YOUR TANK CAUGHT FIRE I WAS IN THE LEAD TANK (HUMP/DRIVER, LOOKER/GUNNER, SGT NICKELSON/TC & MYSELF/LOADER) I RAN ALL THE BACK WITH OUR FIRE EXTINGUISHER ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE, TRYING IN VAIN TO PUT OUT THE FLAMES. THAT WAS QUITE A SPECTACLE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE LOCALS. IF I REMEMBER RIGHT YOUR CREW WAS MITCH, SGT.NEWTON, YOURSELF, AND ??? CAN'T RECALL. I WAS ON GUARD DUTY THAT NIGHT MEDINA SHOT HIMSELF, I WAS AT THE AMMO DUMP WITH GABBY AND MICK MEYER, I'LL NEVER FORGET HIM ON THE RADIO SAYING "I SHOT MYSELF IN THE FOOT", WAS HE EVER WASTED ON MADDOGS THAT NIGHT. WELL GOT TO GO, PEACE TO ALL!!! KEEP POSTING

Great site! Served as Small Arms Repairman (MOS 421) Armament section, Fliegerhorst Kaserne, Hanau. Great memories of Graf, midnight alerts, supporting 3AD pistol team (Capt Dann, SFC Gilliard, etc). Learned a lot under CWO Bob Martin, Sgt Driggers, Sgt Nathaniel Pierce. Great friends in Dudley Boone, Mel Price, Gary Sanborn, Charlie Lape, Neal Lamorie. Have fond memories of MG Abrams, Capt Tommie G. Smith! Remember the hole in the fence by the back gate! The Pizza shack outside the main gate? Love to hear from those there with me at that time!

I was battalion ammo clerk in Support Plt from Oct 68 until May 70.

Sorry for the repetition. Sgt. Gerald Tworek who was with Support Plt in 69-70 was killed in Laos. I've heard that Lt. Joe Marthers went down on KAL 007 but,of course, hope that it's not true.

Very few Rangers from that period are talking on this site and that's unfortunate. Visited Ayers last year but many here have already described how it is now.

So, where are all you draftee grunts anyway?

Okay people, I promised you Licher Beer to be raffled off and we have it. If you go to the reunion sections of the website and then go to the A3ADV 1st Annual reunion, you will find another link to reunion raffles. http://www.3ad.org/reunions/reunion_a3adv_1st_reunion_raffles.htm  On that page, you will find items we are raffling off at our reunion to raise money for Association Special Funds. For a dollar investment, you can have a chance to win 4 cans of Licher Beer. We also have a copy of Elvis Presley's album, GI Blues, a rare Combat Command B Crest, and a copy of Spearhead in the West, printed in 1945. Tickets for any of these items can be purchased from the Website store by sending payment to the store. Payment must be received by Tuesday July 24th to be entered into the drawing. If you want to receive your stubs back, please include a self addressed stamped envelope with your payment. The winners will be announced at our Saturday night banquet and posted on the website the following week.

I love this site.I've checked every name in the guestbook,& haven't seen 1 that I knew, but am starting back through now and reading the comments. It's bringing back names, words, and phrases, that I've not thought of for years, and if I mentioned them to anyone who was never there, would have no idea. I was in K.G. before it was called the rock.Bn CO was Lt Col Hiram Wolfe,XO was Maj Braun,Bn Sgt Major Was McIntire,Company Co was Captain Sagona,1st Sgt was Wright,Bn Surgeon was Capt.Rose,Bn Adj,(my boss),was Capt Schall. UAC(personel officer),was WO Mccarron. Happenings– Field mouse invasion in 60 or 61, 3 man details,1 man with a bucket of hot water down a mouse hole, the other 2 guys with ballbats at other holes when the mice came out. Happenings–A new commander coming whose wife was allergic to dandelions so the entire post was sent on dandelion digging detail, after duty hours.(I think it was Maj Gen Butchers). Phrases and words–Mox nix-Butzbach Annie-Save one for Giessen-Alert-Flip tops-S%$# on a shingle-Road wheels(pancakes)-AFN-Shatzie-DOR-Comrade-Land of the round doorknobs. Thanks guys for helping me to remember just how much I had forgotten. I don't mean to take up a lot of space, but i'll probably do some more of this later.

I remember when someone decided we had to name all our vehicles. And the name had to start with the letter of our company. Someone in D Co. (3/5 or 5/5) was standing on top of their 577 scratching their behind when the CO asked them for their name. This guy pulls his hand out of his pants and says DINGLEBERRY!!! I'll never forget that. I don't think they let him name it that. But oh was that ever a good one. Try to come up with a cool name that starts with "H" SSG Wilson named our 577 Hennessey….mmmmmm I'll try to remember something a little more intellectual and post it later…

Ahhhhh the memories! Who can forget changing a busted track from a M577A2 or Bradley, in knee deep mud, at Grafenwohr or Vilseck in the cold of January? Who can forget the cold nights spent in Berlin at "Doughboy City" while you were there TDY for the MOUT (Military Operations on Urban Terrain) Course? Or what about the spooky silence and pitch darkness while laying in an LP/OP while in the forest surrounding Hohenfels? Man, those were the days and I wish I could relive them again. I used to love going to the field so much more than being stuck in garrison at Coleman Kaserne in Gelnhausen and pulling the endless hours of "track park" guard and/or whatever "busy work" they could find to keep us occupied until the next time we went to the field. Luckily, the NCO's and officers in our battalion were really top notch, and in reality tried to insulate us from too much of the "busy work" and keep some meaningful training scheduled. I have tried to absorb alot of lessons on leadership from personnel I was fortunate enough to serve with such as my platoon sergeant, SFC John Santiago who is now a CSM, or Lt Col Robert St Onge, who is now a Major General at Fort Riley. Had I absorbed what they were trying to instill in me then, I probably would have still been in the Army. But at the time of my discharge, I was young and stupid and my eyes were filled with visions of big dollars in the civilian world, so I made the worst mistake of my life and ETS'd. Based on what I know now, if I could counsel a young solider today, I would tell him or her to suck it up and drive on! I would also tell them to think about the camaraderie they would be losing be leaving for the private sector, because it doesn't exist as it does in the Army, or any branch of the military for that minute. I would also definitely tell a young soldier to volunteer for an overseas tour of duty to Germany like so many of us here on this board experienced. I can still see the town of Gelnhausen and Coleman Kaserne just as if I am actually standing there……….the smell of the bread baking in the bakerei, the couples strolling through the parks, or even walking through town and hearing the blast of country music from the "Nashville" or the smell of the Kentucky Fried Chicken coming into the street and reminding you of home. I can honestly not think of anything bad to say about my time in Gelnhausen, with maybe the exception of those early morning runs through the "cabbage patch," the smell of rotten cabbage mixing with the sweat and gin and/or heffe weizen bodies were trying to expel from a long night spent at the "Blue Knight" or a trip to Sachsenhausen (It can really be embarassing on the train ride home from Frankfurt/Sachsenhausen and you fall asleep and wake up in Wachtersbach or Fulda hahahahaha). If there was such a thing as a "time machine" I would go back in a second!!!!! "Blood – N – Guts" and "Spearhead" to everyone!

I was stationed at Schloss kaserne, living in the barracks above PLDC, with 1st Platoon, 503d MP Company. We later moved to Ayers Kaserne and were barracked above HHC 1st BDE. Our Platoon office was located above the Movie Theater. I could not believe the photographs showning what is left of Schloss Kaserne and saddend to hear of the closing of Ayers Kaserne.

My maternal grandfather served in the 23rd in WW I (Argonne). I am just beginning to research the role of the 23rd in that war.

My father served in the 47th in WW II (Omaha Beach).

I am just an interested, and greatful citizen

I am the son of Pvt. Vincent L. Crough, Co. C, 83rd Armd Recon Bn, who was killed in action on March 2, 1945, near Bergheim, Germany. I attended the dedication of the Third Armored Divison Monument on July 4 and was privileged to meet Bill Heinz who joined the Third the same day as my father. Best wishes and thanks to all the Third Armored Division veterans. I have posted a tribute to my father at http://www.awon.org/awcrough.html

Attended the dedication of the 3AD memorial at Freedom Foundation Park today. Jim Langan and Jim McClay were also there to represent our group. The memorial is beautiful and I encourage anyone who gets in the area to drop by and see it. I did take pictures to put on the website when I get time. General Wallice Nutting, CG of the 3AD 1978-1979 was the guest speaker. General Nutting is a very impressive man to meet and hear speak. Our thanks to the WWII veterans of the 3AD for their sacrifice to enable us all to enjoy the freedoms we have today.

To all Spearhead vets from my era and units, I say at the top of my lungs, HOWDY!! Finally I have an e-mail address. I truly hope to see some of the '61 thru '64 troops that I served with; barring that, I hope that there will be a good turnout for this the first 3AD Reunion. Steven Depuy and his associates are undoubtedly knocking themselves out to make this happen; GOOD ON THE BUNCH OF YOU! Drop me a line if my name is familiar to you. I was in Commo for the most of my hitch, with BDE S-4. See you in about 3 weeks!

Dir Sir or Maam,

I am pleased to see the unit roll up on your web site for my platoon. I would be more than happy to send all of my photo's of my experiance in Desert Storm to help you out. I can E-Mail you my combat orders for my CIB and other awards as well. Many of the names on the list for my platoon could be filled in. I am still on Active duty and serve proudly with my 3AD patch on my permant shoulder. I noticed SSG Maysonnette's name on the the list and PFC Richard Runyon, they were good freinds of mine at the time. I would love to help out in any way that I can. I am still very proud of the unit, and think about those days in the sand all the time. The NCO's that led me then have made me a good NCO today. I would really like to be able to write to SSG Bennete, My Section Sergeant and thank him for taking care of me during the War, I owe him alot. I am currently stationed at FT Drum, NY in Charlie Company, 4-31 Infantry as a 60MM Mortar Section Leader. I am A SSG hoping to get promoted to SFC soon. I would be very pleased if anyone would write me back and help me out. I would love to see my name next to to 3 gun 1st section mortars on the list, I was a PFC at the time. I still have my have my DCU uniform that we had to hand sow our patches on to get on the airplanes to get home to Germany and Coleman Kaserne. I would be more than happy to send it to you if it would help your museam.

Michael J. Sommerhauser SSG, USA

It was March, '44, I think. Approaching Cologne, a bridge had to be put in across what I believe was the Erft canal. I was with the 188th FA Gp supporting the 3rd Arm. I came up to the bridge site in a jeep and was surprised to see field officers sweating with the engineers working on the bridge. Gen. Rose stood on a little mound looking rather angry. It seems the engineers had goofed and put on tracks at Sherman width too narrow for the leading Pershings. So there was hell to pay, and those engineer field officers were sweating it out, working hard. I thought the scene had its comic side. Later, in a town called Merzenich, I was standing around with some 104th Infantry riflemen, and the 3rd's armored artillery was also in the town. A flight of our own Ninth Tac came over and bombed the hell out of us. I woke up in a cellar with some infantry and armor guys around me. When I came up to the street I observed a lot of damage and guys were pointing at the yellow and white US markings on some duds and using very foul language directed at the Nonth Tac bombers. Maybe someone in the 3rd's artillery remembers being hit by our own bombers in Merzenich. The tanks had already taken off for Morschenach, about forty miles ahead. I've always suspected that those two names were confused by a bomber navigator and they unloaded on us instead of hitting Morschenach, the target town they were supposed to hit in support of the tanks spearheading toward Cologne ……..
