I have yet to be in a unit as hard core as this particular company. My time in the 3AD was and still is the most satisfying of my more than 18 year career to date. The men I served with have gone on and distinguished themselves often. It is great to see the number still around and serving in greater positions of resposibility. Good to see newly selected sergeants major John Fortune and James Kennedy. Congratulations!

Hey all you Charlie Rockers!! Wassupp!! Sgt. Cabano here. Just wanted to say hey and great site! This is the best. Thanks to Sgt. Metz for telling me of this site. While I'm here if anyone knows the whereabouts of Sgt. Jerry Rice or has an email address for him I would sure appreciate it. Or even an home address of where ever it is he lives. 3AD was the best Unit that I ever had the privilage of serving with. And even though I wasn't with them in Desert Storm I want to say that they did a damn great job!!! I'll try to add more comments later on. All you 3AD past and present take care.

Rank: SGT MOS:93B Aeroscout Observer Equipment: OH58 Kiowa Callsign: Wook / Charger 24A

I served with the 4/7 Cav during Desert Storm and stayed with the unit long enough to make the transition to 1/1 Cav and then ETS in 1993. Never before or since have I had the honor of serving with a better group of soldiers and patriots. It may have been a mere 100 hour War to some but it was long enough to make heroes of a few young men. SGT Gentry and SGT Kutz thank you and we'll see you at Fidler's Green. Garry Owen!

I am not a member of the military. However I enjoyed this web site and appreciate all the effort, time, and lives that each and every one of the 3rd Armored Division veterans have given to this country. Thank you for allowing me to live a life much more comfortable and secure than would otherwise have been possible.

I served on 'the Rock' from '72 – '74. I hated it when I was there, but now I sort of miss it. It seems as if we spent as much time in the field as washing down the motorpool, anyway. Thanks for the photos — they brought back fond memories.

Drake-Edwards was being remodeled while I was there (71-73). For awhile I lived at Drake, the office moved around as the place was being worked on. Administrative Machine Branch offices moved from the Admin building to the NCO club, to the gym, and finally to an old stable on Edwards. What was the name of the resturant across the street from the Edwards main gate?

I've recently started a discussion forum for former members of 2-33 Armor, also other units of 3rd AD and anyone else who may be interested. The URL ishttp://pub20.ezboard.com/bmenofwar and the forum is called the Tigers'Den. If you'd like to put in a link to the page, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

To all you tiger battalion and pickle battalion guys out there, I found a couple of tiger battalion crests and 4 pickle battalion crests a few months ago. A guy just bought one of the tigers tonight and I have a few of the pickles left. They are not easy to find and I have no idea if I will ever have any again. First come first serve. Go to the store and go to the crest section to check them out. They must be ordered from me via e-mail contact as I must verify I still have them. Many other units are in stock. I have a WWII pinback 33d Armor and 82d Field Artillery and many others as well.

I was the Brigade Cmdrs. driver for 2d Bde. I went through three of them. Colonels Dillion Snell, Hugh J. Bartley, Samuel Smithers. Col. Bartley was the best by far. I had a great time. After an 11 year break in service I joined The MOARNG and have been back to Germany twice. I'm retiring as the1SG of a Combat Engineering Co. after 22 years. I't been quite a rid.

Hoping to hear from some old friends:Matt McGuire, Reggie Allen, Steen, McCarley, Hood, Phelps, Hooge, too many names to type, any FISTer who was around for our 6 months in the sandbox, under the nice black rain of the oil fires, the scorpion-spider-scud beetle fights in the middle of nowhere.

Also would be nice to hear from any of the tankers/grunts we partied with in Friedberg(Ray Barracks, bitte!) or that we backed up with heavy firepower in Saddamland. (sidenote: Mike Miller, de la rouge, and I transfered over to 82nd Airborne Ft. Bragg but haven't heard from either of them in years.) Thunder!

The following is an e-mail I received from Aberdeen Proving Grounds as to our reunion. It sounds like a place of great interest to veterans of all era's. This is one of the day trips planned at our reunion this summer. Check out details in the reunion section

Dear Mr. Depuy:

APG’s U.S. Army Ordnance Museum boasts a large collection of historically significant materiel, including a 25-acre tank and artillery park that may be of interest to you and your group. The museum is open on Mondays from noon until 4:45 p.m., and Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 :45 p.m., but is closed on national holidays except Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. The museum offers a self-guided tour, and admission is free. From Interstate 95, APG is located off of Exit 85. For more information about the U.S. Army Ordnance Museum, visit their website at www.goordnance.apg.army.mil/odmuseum.htm. If I can be of further assistance, please contact me at www.lwitkow.apg.army.mil

Thank you for your interest in Aberdeen Proving Ground.

He died when I was 5 so I didn't get a chance to talk to him about his service. If anybody has any information on him or his unit, please feel free to contact me. Hi all, Just wanted to say thanks for all the emails I've gotten concerning my postings. Just got my newsletter and although I can't attend it did get me thinking…. What if someone brought a PC and a scanner? They must be lots of guys that don't have access to a scanner but yet have beaucoup pictures of their time in the 3AD that they would like to share with other vets that will be attending the reunion and those like me who can't be there. Just an idea… Later, Kirk 'Cal' Callesen CSC 3/36 Inf. Recon Plt. 1975-78 Scouts Out!

That will be available as well as digital photography too. Thanks for the suggestion Kirk – Steve

Have gotten some emails and calls from the first time I signed in. Just got off the phone with Sgt. Goodwin. He was the gunner in HQ-26 with Sgt. Stephens when they got hit the night of the 26th. He's doing really well. He's in the guestbook around Feb. 6th.

Am putting a promo for my book in here. The story about HQ-26 is in there; all kinds of stuff about the Rock, Grafenwoer, Hoenfels, deployment, the war and after. Hope nobody thinks I'm overdoing it here, but hey, it's a hell of a book!

"…Coming to the top of the low hill that lay at our front all that afternoon, the batle lay before us. A long low basin stretched into the distance with burning vehicles smoldering at innumerable places. In my night vision goggles streaking shafts of light slammed into their targets; white fireballs exploded at the end of their laser beam straightness. The streaks of seeming laser light happened in rapid succession, one after another after another. The tracer-like M1A1 sabot rounds piercing the atmosphere, accentuated by my infrared night vision, created a horrific scene of fire in the valley. As artillery boomed constantly somehwere very near, the steadily increasing noise of the battle seemed to reach a crescendo. The incredible succession of rapid tank fire roared up at us like waves.

I looked over at Sergeant T as he held a lit cigarette under his poncho. Neither of us spoke. I followed the vehicle at my front, into the valley.

"Faraway Thunder: A Journey through Army Life & the Gulf War", is a common soldier's story. Intensely personal, it tells the story of modern army life and war in the Persian Gulf. From the recruiter's office to the battlefield, it is a journey into the thoughts and observations of one soldier as he sees and feels war, and the aftermath of war.

Gwen Haugen, News Record, writes: "The book held so much more than an accounting of factual events; it took us into the mind of a young man who struggled with devotion to duty and the suffering which results from waging war…"

Haugen continues: "He is skillful in his use of conversation. Sentences are short, in the language which one would expect from men dealing with life choices and life threatening situations…In my opinion, Jones is a master of suspense."

Published by Vista Publishing, the book is available at www.seekbooks.com (Type in faraway thunder in the title search at the top of the sight). Or go to www.amazon.com (In the search box go to books, then type in faraway thunder). You can also visit the website listed or drop the author an email.

Cal Callesen, you were there 12 years after I left there, Ayers Kaserne. I didn't know it as the Rock at the time, (1960),I guess it got that moniker later. Your comment of 26 Jan 01, took me back, quite vividly, to those days I spent there. The Graf trips, Fulda, Hoensfels, etc. I was reminded of the time I came back, after a night on the town, drunk as a skunk, and ran through the main gate, hoping to get past the MP's cause I didn't have a pass. I got caught on the parade field and spent the night in the brig, there by the main gate. My barracks were to the right as you come in from the main gate, all the way down the street, second from the end. HH co 2ARB 36th Inf. Just to the right of the EM club was a hole in the fence, as I remember. You gave me a taste of what it's like now. Thank you, for the memories.

Hello to all Spearheaders, I've started a website that pays homage to the "Iron Dukes" 2/67 Armor Battalion. I hope that all past and present soliders will vist and leave their comments. I could not have established the site without the help of Kevin Colson, the 67th Armor webmaster for the 3rd.org page. Thank you Kevin. I'm still looking for soliders that served in 2/67 in D co. 1991-1994. Thanks again to 3rd AD Association Veterans. IRON DUKES ARE WINNERS!

Just happened upon the website and was fascinated with the amount of information available. I think I learned more about the unit in a few minutes than I learned or knew during the time that I was in the unit. Of course, we were pretty busy during that period and in the field a great deal.

Interested in hearing from anyone serving in Gelnhausen during my term. I have been fortunate enough to have visited Gelnhausen on several occasions over the past 35 years – was able to photograph and stand in front of B company barracks just a couple of years ago. It gives you a real rush to be there and recall the years spent. A few highlights; alerts at all hours, driving my personnel carrier 8A, Graf and Hoelfels, Maxims bar, etc.

I was S-4/Service Battery Commander. We transitioned from M14s to M16s, and wrestled with the new, Volunteer Army comcept. We ran a consoidated mess for units on Francoise, and consolidated maintenance for the Battalion. We trained often at Graf including a January in GP medium tents at Camp Kasserine. Would enjoy hearing from you. "All for One"..

Does anyone recall the “Walking the Nukes” scenario in the Fulda Gap? I vaguely recall the following from 48th Infantry Battalion staff exercises. As Warsaw Pact(WP)/Soviet forces cross the East German Border a “Forward Edge of the Battle Area” (FEBA) establishes itself (well, it sounds like a practical concept anyway). At some point in the scenario a decision is made to “go nuclear” i.e., due to imminent threat of significant breaching or envelopment of 3AD defending forces. I vaguely recall three levels of nuclear response, the net effect of which was to “walk” the nukes from initial strikes in WP rear areas, on forward to near the FEBA. The first level (i.e., deepest) strikes were to be accomplished by tactical battlefield missiles. The intermediate level or next stage of the forward walk of the nukes was to be accomplished by 155mm nuclear capable field artillery. The last stage of walking the nukes to near the FEBA was to be accomplished by Davy Crocketts mounted on infantry jeeps. On the prospect of such firing, it was tongue-in-cheek considered good form to have a really speedy jeep. For whatever reason, I recall the following 2 place names from the acetate overlay maps at Battalion Headquarters regarding Walking the Nukes exercises: Hunfeld & Neuhof. This is the sometimes on middle of the night radio watch, acting Useful Duck Oscar, out.

Man, I hope somebody I know logs into this and connects with me. WOuld really like to know if any of my comrades have any illness as a result of the Gulf. Isn't it odd how we in 2nd brigade, turned in everything we brought with us? Remember the piles of GP Larges/Mediums/Smalls? Remember smashing the gunners quadrants just do they were declared "unserviceable", and putting them into the stack with the rest of the other thousands?

Kuhn–I haven't forgetten. The guidon is going to be in the mail!!

Hey Desert Storm vets. I noticed in the DOD memo on Khamisayah that personnel were missed and whole units may have been missed. It looks as if the unit locations were based on 'pure' organization rather than task force or that they have the wrong Companies aligned into task forces. Anyone with data should respond to the address in the letters from DOD with that data. Remember to hold your originals! Black Knights

Well the guestbook has been removed from the 3AD Museum site..of course this is another (Name Removed)  move, since he runs that site, BUT HE DOESN'T RUN NOT THIS ONE.. To bad that the guestbook was removed. He states that it due to abuse..then why hasn't this site been abused ? What is abuse to one is not to another. The guestbook should be open to all comments, good or bad.

We all have our own opinions but we do not want to start name calling. Guestbook Manager. Kevin

Okinawa was my first duty assignment after enlisting with the US Army. I worked in the printing end of the operations doing propaganda leaflets which were air lifted and dropped over Viet Nam. Our presses where running around the clock to get this stuff out. From what I have been told by the guys over in Nam in the front lines that these leaflets were used as sanitary paper because most of the vietnamese people could not read. Just another form of waste wouldn't you say? Had a good time on my off duty time in which I saw some very interesting things. Only remember a few of the names I worked with. Mike Peters which does a cartoon strip for a major newspaper. There was a Sgt.Cain, Sgt. Gibbs, Sp4 Little. If there are any of you that remember these years in Okinawa let me hear from you.

Served as the 3/8 Cav S2 during the Gulf War and rolled up the HQ's 3/8 Company Guidon as its last commander in December of 1991. It was an honor.

Just checking in to see if any other Outlaws from my time have left their mark on this site. Only have seen a few, where are the rest of you guys. I can't believe it will be 25 years since I wore those green fatigues and drove that M60A1 all over Germany. I really miss driving that tank, especially here on our freeways in California, what a sight that would be. To all I served with on the ROCK through the good and alot of the bad, here is a some words of wisdom MOX NIX!!!

I had a great time serving with the 23rd Herd, our many trips to Graf, Hoenfeld, Wildflicken and the Fulda Gap! I drove a Dump Truck during the rebuilding of the motor pool in Giessen. I knew alot of great guy's that I have lost contact with over the years. I hope that many of you that served during that time will log on and be found. God's Speed Spearhead!

Amazing how fast new entries appear in the log. I have had no luck finding anyone from Bravo, but it has been a few years. Any of you out there? I see Sonderson and Autry listed in the Desert Storm roster. What about Sappington, Renfroe, Stoltz, Mansfield, Wilcox and the rest of you HET drivers? Strange how time makes the memories of the time we spent there better. I don't miss first call formations in the rain a bit. I'd really like to hear from any of you, 122nd MSB or otherwise, who were at Drake/Edwards then.

Original assigned to A trp. by an error reading my MOS. Put on the PLT Sgt. track OJT (A15) There I meet one of my best friends …SP/4 Dave "Barney" Bartnez. He showed me alot! About 3 months later the REDEYE section in HHT was going thru a DIV. REDEYE test. They were short of people, and by accident they heard of me. I was "loaned" to HHT just for the test. Dec. 7th 1973 we took the Div. test and got No.1 in DIV. and My team was No.1 (Sgt. Dave "MO" Molin & myself) They never let me go back! *G* There I meet another bunch of great guys! John Cartwright, Phillip Lovely, Dave Anderson, Dave Molin, Otis Matthews, LT. Duffy, "Buzzard", and all the others! Was one of the best times of my life! But it was one of the saddest too. June 74 I was going home on leave. Barney was E.T.S.ing out. I joked "I'd beat him home"! And he'd joke "Yeah…But you got to come back"! A month later I was walking thru the gate, and an SP I knew asking if I just got off leave? I don't know what gave it away? My new suit or a 3 week old beard!?? *G* He turns serious, and asked if I knew about Barney? I said Yeah I knew he E.T.S. out. He then says "But Barney drown 2 weeks later"! I didn't want to believe it! But 2 days later the 1st PLT Sgt. from A trp. stop me for a donation for flowers for Barney's faimly! Barney is still with me to this day! As are all of you! Funny there were times I hated it there! But at this time in my life I wish I was back! I'm moving soon to Idaho (3/01) and will re-register again with new e-mail address, BUT would love to hear of any of the ole" gang!!! Remember "If you ain't cold, wet,& hungry, you ain't CAV!" *L*

Massachusetts Author Bares His Soul in Memoir on Operation Desert Storm, The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy

Massachusetts’ native, Steven Manchester, is proud to announce the release of his new book, The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy- just in time for the 10 year anniversary of Operation Desert Storm.

Based on his trying experiences during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, Manchester graphically details life as a U.S. Army M.P. in Iraq. “My perspective of the Gulf War was very different from the sanitized version CNN opted to show,” said Manchester, “up close…we witnessed many children slaughtered by land mines. I’ve always felt people should know how it really was!” Such brutal depictions in this memoir are evidence of the hefty costs associated with freedom and the price paid to heal America from the poltergeist of Vietnam.

Packed with raw emotion, The Unexpected Storm is Manchester’s personal account of his experiences before, during and after the 100 hours of ground fighting in the Middle East. It is a compelling tale of friends made and lost, battles waged on an internal front, and promises broken. Though most soldiers returned home- visibly whole, what they brought with them as a result of experimental vaccines, radioactive depleted uranium and pent-up rage is just beginning to surface. “It was a just cause,” Manchester confirmed, “babies were being tossed from hospital incubators in Kuwait. My only problem is the way our own government has chosen to complete the deal…more treatment is needed!”

Though the book bravely delves into the controversial issue of the Persian Gulf Syndrome, or “Mystery Illness,” Manchester takes the concept of war to a deeply inward and higher level. “Not all war wounds are visible, nor are they all suffered on the battlefield,” said Manchester, “War is a state of mind and a man cannot live in two worlds at one time…eventually, there has to be a truce.”

Steven Manchester is the author of three books of poetry, two novels, and two screenplays, both of which were produced as independent films by Rising Tide Entertainment, Inc. To view these: www.booksmoviesscreenplays.com Under the pen name Steven Herberts, he is also the author of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue- a tour of modern-day prisons through the eyes of a Correction Officer.

Published by Hellgate Press, The Unexpected Storm is available on-line, in all major bookstores (Jan. 2001) or directly from the publisher by calling 1-800-228-2275.

first, thanks to the folks that manage this website – it's a great place to browse…. lots of names in the guest book i recognise. i spent the greater part of my career in the 3rd ad… just kept requesting fste's and getting them approved. was stationed in hanau on hessen-homberg kaserne with the 23rd engineers for 7 years, then moved with the battalion to ray barracks in friedberg after desert storm. 3AD deactivated while there, although the 23rd en bn stayed active until after we returned from bosnia in late '96, then it was deactivated and reflagged as the 16th en bn and moved to giessen in '97. i retired out of there in dec. '98.

hey, all you old bulldogs of B/23/E… how many times did we scream "bulldogs… fit to fight!" on the company street there on hessen-homberg? the powers that were made us change our callsign while in bosnia… seems one of the armor battalions had a bulldog company so the engineers lost out… cpt halsa decided we'd become maddogs while in bosnia and the callsign stayed.

guess i'll have to join this spearhead association since the old "spearheader for life" association vanished once the division deactivated. any old buddies out there feel free to contact me via e-mail.

I was the company clerk of A company during my tour of duty in Germany. The company commander at the time was Lt Offringa. Would like to hear from anybody who served during this time. From reading other comments from others it appears that Hessen Homberg Kaserne has been torn down to make way for housing, to bad. I enjoyed my stay in Hanau, a great community. Would like to hear from Gary Flint or Pete Petteruti.

Hello to all readers. I am the website manager for the 3rd Brigade "Thunder" Desert Storm section of this website. I have just published a Desert Personal History written by Brad Gericke. He was the XO of A/2-67 Armor during DS. This is an outstanding narrative. I have posted the Forword from the narrative here. Please let us know what you think about this. Take your time & write down your own personal narrative.

Kevin Iron Dukes 85 to 89 Guest Book Manager 67th Armor Webmaster 3rd Brigade DS Webmaster

"The journal extract reprinted below appears essentially intact from its original version. I and the editor have removed certain personal names and "candid" observations not suitable for this venue. But the narrative itself remains untouched. No effort has been made to verify facts and statistics mentioned. I intend to provide a more complete accounting in a forthcoming book concerning the history of the Third Armored Division. The perspective of the text is of a young lieutenant of Armor witnessing events first-hand as Company XO, Alpha Company, 2-67 Armor. I sensed it then, but only learned to fully appreciate later, just how magnificent were the men with whom I served. The Iron Dukes were a great tank battalion, led by the Army's finest warriors, during a very memorable time…"

Thanks!! Brad

Some may have noticed that I quoted from several articles in my postings to the 3AD Museum site’s guestbook (some would say I violated the spirit of the guestbook). My intent was to capture, to some limited degree, the context of the times from the Khruschev Berlin Ultimatum of 1958 to the demise of Khruschev in October 1964. Briefly, 1962 marked the highest Cold War USAREUR strength: ca. 290,000. The specific buildup to that number began in the Spring of 1961. August 1961 marked the beginning of the sealing off by the Communists of East Berlin. According to the Army, the reinforced USAREUR took about one year to attain full readiness. That year was the time frame of approximately the Fall of 1961 to the Fall of 1962. The following is from the October 13, 1961 issue of TIME: “The sirens screech in the dead of the West German night. In dozens of barracks and off-base housing units, thousands of U.S. [enlisted]men and officers snap awake and dive for field uniforms and equipment. One by one, the diesel engines of the squat, 52-ton M-60 tanks cough and rumble to life. In quick order, the assembled units roar down serpentine German roads toward fighting positions that have long since been plotted for protective cover and fields of fire. Within two hours of the first cry of the sirens, the 14,617-man 3rd Armored Division of the U.S. Seventh Army is braced in battle deployment against any Communist thrust through the ‘Hessian Corridor’ – a stretch of gentle, rolling country that invites invasion from East Germany. Even on such practice alerts, which take place at least once a month, the 3rd Armored had better be ready, or it will soon hear from its commanding officer, one of the toughest soldiers in a tough U.S. Army. Says Major General Creighton (‘Abe’) Abrams, 47: ‘Our mission is to be prepared to fight. We are ready to fight.’ If war comes in Germany, it will smash against the U.S. Seventh Army, which guards more than 300 miles of the East German and Czechosolvakian border and anchors the NATO defense line that stretches 650 miles from Austria to the North Sea. The most vital mission in the five-division Seventh Army belongs to the 3rd Armored, which must plug the Hessian Corridor, a historic route of conquest.” (p. 20); “To get the job done right, with whatever it takes, General Abrams is honing his 3rd Armored to a razor’s edge. Each man spends some 135 days a year on field maneuvers. The division’s tanks and combat vehicles are kept stocked with a full supply of ammunition. ” (p. 22)

I came over to Gibbs Kasern Frankfurt Germany shortly after Kennedy was shot. I was enroute and in the middle of the Atlantic on either the USS Darby, or Rose( cannot recall)when this happened. Anyway, I hated being there, I hated the Army, I hated the alerts, and I hated going out to the field, I hated the Mess Hall and there crappy S.O.S as well as the God aufull sea rats! So why do I miss it so much now? A big hello to my Army buddies, Mike Lewy and Steve Brodsky. To my teen age buddy Tom Shay who volunteered for the Nam, and never made it back " We will always miss you, and we will forever be greatful for your great sacrifice" Your buddy Waldy from NYC!!!

Hello, I am a 30-year old german and I am living in the former Edwards-Housing in Frankfurt. I am very interested to know about the history of the Edwards-Kaserne. It is right now partly shut down and a new housin-area will be built on it. I have taken alot of photos during the last year and would like to see older photos and hear old stories. Greetings from Frankfurt, Jens

Hello. I am writing to invite all readers who are veterans of the Second World War to contact me. Since 1987 I have been contacting veterans, trying to save and collect the stories and memories of this time. All the replies are being put into a book or used to help my public displays at schools, etc, that much more accurate.

I have a list of questions concerning your time in the service. If you contact me, I can send you these questions, plus give you more insight into my projects. I hope you will join me in participating in preserving this memorable era.

Thank you all for your time, Wm.T. Ripley

ISP changed my email address so here's new one.

Man, Gelnhausen is looking so good in Bikels' pictures that I'm wanting to go back there soon as I can. Nice post, nice town and good people.

The website is getting better all the time and I'm proud of the responses in the guestbook. They show good people coming from one of the best of outfits.

Anybody remember the gliders flying around there on weekends? I counted over 20 in the air one time. Boy they did a lot of flying when I was there.

I purchased the book, Spearhead in the West, The 3rd Armored Division, from the 3AD web site store. This book is absolutely superb. I'll be buying many more 3AD items from the store. Steve Depuy, who operates the store, does an outstanding job answering questions and preparing orders. Contact Steve for all your 3AD needs. I know I will. Great job, Steve!

Killed list should say Bowman, Michael not bishop and he was killed when our unit moved back into iraq and he was clearing an area for the combat trains when he picked up a cluster bomb and it exploded, I remember it quite clearly.

I got to 3/5 Cav in June of 1992. Everybody was in Hohenfels at this time and I thought I would'nt have to go…wrong! I was on a small VW bus for about 5 hours I think, got to tent city in the middle of the night and had to sleep in some guys cot while he was on Motor Pool guard, fun! Had a great time with 3/5, and SFC Soto from D, 1st PLT is now my OPS SGM at 1-13 AR at Fort Riley Kansas, small world I guess.

If you haven't read Steve Depuy's diary entry, you must do it! Steve, I just couldn't believe how much I could relate to your experiences; although I didn't exactly parallel all of yours, I did find my own experiences in several of yours. I would like for you to know that you weren't the only city boy. This is true and is not meant to steal anything from you : As any of you who have read my diary entry know, I drove for the Battalion Commander. One day the S-1 Adjutant needed to go to one of the remote ammo dumps and his driver was not available. I was "loaned" to him by the colonel and drove him in an open jeep to the site which was several miles out in the countryside along a narrow and winding country road. We were rolling along when all of a sudden this Lieutenant grabbed my arm and yelled for me to stop the jeep. It scared the hell out of me and when I got the jeep stopped, I asked him what the problem was. He said "You need to back up." Why? I asked. He said "I just saw a bull with an udder!" Now I wasn't raised on a farm, but being from the midwest, I did know that that would be something worth seeing! I backed up to the point where he told me to stop and there in a field just off the roadway was maybe a couple dozen COWS, NO BULLS. Lt Black said "See…!" I laughed and told him they were really cows and informed him that the Germans did not cut the cow's horns as American farmers do (although to this day I'm not sure why that is, I did know it). Lt Black felt pretty small, but it was understandable. He was from New York City and had never been on or near a farm. He did get me back sometime later, though. He started talking about one of his goals while he was in Europe was to go to Italy and get an Alfa Romeo directly from the factory. I had no idea what an Alfa was and he took pleasure in "my" ignorance. This was just one of the coincidental parallels, Steve, but I laughed out loud when I read yours so I had to share this. By the way, Lt Black did get his Alfa and he was sure proud of it.

Just found this web site, been along time. Still have alot of good memories, looking over the Kazerne, and wanting them to stop the world and let me back on. Had some real good friends, Frank, Larry, most I don't remember names, but never will forget their faces. A little about me, left Hanua, went to Vietnam, got hurt real bad, got out of the service. Tried being a Sherrif for a couple of years, lost interest, got married, had kids, got Divorced, got remarried. been married for past 24 years to the best lady in the world. I have 5 grandchildren. Now I am a Postmaster in California, pretty bad, Vietnam Vet, Ex-cop and now I work for the Post Office. Think I got the bases covered. Any interested give me a gingle, would be great to hear from some of the old friends.

I had some good times at "The Rock". It was a real adventure. The mud, the snow, the rain, sliding down the ice covered mountian in a 55 ton bobsled!

We had our special unit within a unit, "The 13 Congolese" I have the photos of the Easter party!

Who remembers The Budda, Roundtree, Ray, The Squirrel, The Lizard, Blood, Country Joe Cobb, The Bear, EW, Tex, Price, Animal A, Mad Men one and all? Boy are there stories to tell!

I liked my Top Gun award for the M60A2 in 1979. How about you? I liked PNOC at Kransberg. I liked Graf, Friberg, Honfelds. I loved Reforger. I ripped off the guttering of the Bergermisters house while towing another tank, the townsfolk came cheering and giving me some free liters!!

You guys e-mail me sometime. mlmann@hotmail.com

The following is taken from a letter I wrote to one of my Bro’s from Scout Plt. CSC 3/36 detailing my recent trip to visit the “Rock”. Darrell D. had told me about how the ‘Rock’ had been abandoned and then was being used by the Bundeswher as an ammo storage point. Anyway, the place as we knew might not be around much longer and I had some free time so I thought what the hell and went. I had been back in ’85 (I think so anyway) and it was the ‘Rock’ as we knew it, with all the hustle and bustle one expects from an installation of that size. That time I was returning as a civilian and really did feel out of place, as if I had never left and yet, had no place being there as a civilian. Very, very strange. This time I came south from Denmark (where I live now) and it was a whole different ball game. I get to Giessen and there were no GI’s anywhere! Hmmm, nothing but Germans. No signs for newly arrived troops, no MP’s, no real sign that Americans had ever had a presence there at all. As you might have guessed my Danish has superseded all fore knowledge of the German language and while this is a plus in Denmark it is a definite handicap in Germany. So, I go up to the ‘information’ counter and ask about the trains to Butzbach (in English) and encounter not for the first time that really irritating habit that some Germans love, I call it the ‘I have forgotten all the English I ever knew syndrome’. Yeah, I know I’m not in Kansas anymore Toto, but damn it’s a pain in the ass. In Copenhagen nearly everyone speaks at least one if not two foreign languages, I mean how else can one communicate with the other peoples of Europe? But, to put someone in a traveler’s information booth that only understands German, well, that would only happen in Germany (ok maybe France but still). So I get my ticket and get on the right train and start to look for things I remember, the only problem is that normally I would come ‘up’ from Frankfurt so the landmarks would be on the left side and known everything thing was backwards. How can explain it? It all looked as if it has always looked and yet everything was definitely not the same. I kept waiting to see the ‘Rock’ up on the hill at every turn in the bend. When the train stopped in KG, I was pleasantly surprised and jumped off (the few times I took the train and got off in KG and not Butzbach were usually because of payday weekends in Frankfurt and sleeping through the stop in Butzbach). What a shock! The place looked friendly. The roads had all been re-done, no more track marks on the sides and the roads redone with European style ‘speed’ humps every 50 meters or so. I tried to find the back way in, but I ended up coming up through the cherry orchids. I could see the ‘Rock’ now coming up to the road, which runs in front, and it was indeed a strange sight. The buildings were there, but no cars, no people and no sounds. I walked up to the fence by the Rec center and looked into the empty rooms and padlocked doors as if they were closed for five minutes ‘be back soon’. They were some empty concrete pads now shorn of whatever rested upon them, the double chain link fence toped with razor wire a stark reminder of whatever secrets were there were well protected. I moved further along the fence line towards the main entrance gazing at the surrealistic scene of man sized high weeds surrounding the buildings and trees that had filled out since we there. I could imagine Sgt. Majors turning in their graves as areas of responsibility go uncared for. The fence was down around the bowling alley (it had been ‘pushed back so that it was still intact save that part) it allowed me to get closer to what was the bowling alley; it is now a refugee clothes collection point for Eastern Europe. I dared to walk in and should’ve stayed out. There is of course no indication that this had ever been a bowling alley. It is filled with the cast offs of an affluent culture, boxes sit everywhere filled to excess with well, just plain crap that people no longer want be think that others would. The fine parquet floors are gone and there is nothing there to indicate what’s this building once held. I walked over to what was the EM club. Damn we had some good times there. The walls are beginning to give way and crumbling bricks lie scattered where they have begun to break away from the building. I looked into a window hoping to see something, anything really; but a dark empty interior was all I could see. No chairs, no tables, nothing there to remind any one that this was a place of life. Where the ‘boys’ would meet to drink the dollar drinks and get smashed on our sub-standard pay when going into town proved to be too much of a bother or expense. After all, the ‘trips’ to Frankfurt for a little ‘social intercourse’ with the indigenous population could only be afforded once a month, generally on some pay day weekend and in the company of every other horny GI in a radius of 100 miles. Everywhere, I look I saw the buildings but, no people, no life. It was if a neutron bomb had been dropped wiping whatever trace there was of whoever had been there. All gone but yet still there. Looking at the messhall of one of the Armored Battalions, I was back again on those alternating weekends when 2/32’s messhall was where one had to go to eat. The nearly always hung over induced ‘if I don’t eat something in the next ten minutes I will die’ walk to the messhall only to find a line stretching outside with just as hung over guys waiting to eat as well. The smell of bacon now just a memory for there will be no more meals served there. I walked around the front to the main entrance and was struck by the missing ‘Ayers Kaserene’, which should’ve been over the entrance. I remember the first time I saw it on the bus from the 503’rd replacement center. I thought it looked like the ‘Arbeit macht frie’ sign over the concentration camps. The Rads took it down as soon as they could. The locals don’t even ‘understand’ English anymore; there’s no profit in it. Our presence, our sacrifices gave them a ‘unified’ Germany. We won the cold war. There are damn few memorials to the losers, and even less to the victors. The generations of young men who spent a part of their lives there go now unremembered. Even the bars across the street have been closed (because of some arcane fire law which made them ‘legal’ when the ‘Rock’ was open but now means no ready source of water so ‘gesshlossen’) and the taxi stand waits for customers that will never again come. The UP hut is now manned by rent a cops for a German trucking company that uses the former 1st Brigades motor pool as a holding area for trailers. One cannot get into the ‘Rock’ anymore, the ‘Rads’ own it, but I did get the guard to let me go in as far as Brigade Hdq, escorted of course. After all who knows what damage I would do to ‘his’ Kaserene. Really strange to be escorted as if I would do anything to this shrine of my youth. All I really wanted was to be left alone with my memories, my ghosts and try and touch a bit of my past. But it was better than nothing, so I went up the road past 3/36 (or what we knew as 3/36, it having changed designations in ’87 I think) the doors and windows stripped leaving an ugly shell. My host explained that they had been stripped for resale. Oh those nice Americans dropped so much money into improving the entire ‘Rock’ in the late ‘80’s so that now could be sold piece by piece. Not all of the buildings have been stripped. Although, there are no windows in either of the Hdq’s buildings or Alpha 3/36. Brigades headquarters is stripped as well and the two M-24 Chaffee’s that stood guard over the parade ground are gone as well (removed to Friedberg I guess). I never realized the size of the Rock until that day when I stood there, just the rad guard and me. Damn, it was just unnatural to be so empty of life, of movement, of people. I took some pics in the fading light and made my way back to the entrance. Earlier, I had done something that I had never done before; I walked completely around the Rock. When I was there it would have been ‘unadvisable’ to walk the fence especially around the ASP. Some FNG E-2 would’ve mistaking you for some sort of Bader-Meinhof fan club member and taken a potshot at you or worse yet called the MP’s who would’ve probably NOT understood the need to walk around the Rock. The top of the Rock club is no more; apparently it had been condemned prior to the closing and allowed to collapse upon itself. At first I thought it been part of some sort of planned destruction but after I talked with another 3AD vet (Mark Chomsky who runs the video rental store still outside the Rock) he cleared up many misconceptions (the windows I thought had been broken out, had really been sold, etc.) I had had and explained that the Rock apparently been ‘closed’ at the discretion of some general who actually acted against the recommendations he had been given. All the bucks they (or I should say WE tax payers) poured into the renovations of the late eighties, pissed away in a stroke of a pen. When I was on the Rock the windows were single pane and the steam heat would leave the radiators only ‘warm’ to the touch after running on full for hours, now the single pane windows are replaced by double glazed ones. I would like to say I was surprised to hear but, no, not after being in the Army does much surprise me about government decisions anymore. As I made my way around the Rock, I was really surprised about just how clean everything was. The woods are no longer full of the debris of ‘training’ (empty cans of whatever, como wire strung through the treetops and just the general ‘junk’ that gets tossed around with so many GI’s around), its actually clean. As I made the trip around the Rock, I wondered what would become of it. I had seen what happened to ‘Schloss’ in Butzbach, the only thing left from the American days is the gym, the rest having been bulldozed away. Prime real estate. The buildings from Hitler’s era of course are left standing (historical landmarks and all) and the mayor has taken residence in the former Hdq’s building. No, I don’t really know what will happen to the Rock but if I could recommend something I would say save some bucks and get over there to see it while it is as it was before anything radically happens. Has anyone other than me ever heard of, or seen a HEAVY TANK? We had several of these 120mmm cannon bearing beasts that weighed in at 100 tons. They were dubbed the M101 or M103. I have photos for the unbelievers! We were at Kitzingen and then moved to Wurzburg. We were also at the border incident in May 1959. I guess nobody heard of that one either/

It's been some time since I posted last, so I'd thought I'd do it again and see if I can get any response. Every time I visit this site it brings up another memory of the Rock and I actually sit here and smile. Anybody remember the Bretzel shop in the PX Annex – great sandwich – miss those. Don Brant, Duenas, Dan Dempsey (You Irish Red bastard) LT Austensen, Vollenwieder, if any of you come across this – drop me a line – especially if you're going to be in the DC area anytime, I know where to get some good hefeweizen here.

Was kind of embarrassed at the attention my diary posting got. For those who read it, it was not done. I finished it tonight. I appeal to all of you to please do the same. When we die, or even as we get old and the memories fade, we take our history with us and its lost forever. Please submit your stories to your unit website managers and lets get them up there guys.

I was a SP4, SGT, and SSG in B co. 2/48th Mech. Inf. from 75 – 77, the next to the last building going up the HILL. I didn't see anyone listed here that I knew. Where are all you guys at?? I know we were grunts but surely you can type and use the internet. I can still remember many of you and can honestly say those were some good times in my younger days. I went on and stayed in the Army for 21.5 years and retired in '92 as a 1SG. Could have made E9 but didn't want to hang around any longer. Anyway, if anyone reads this and remembers me, I would be pleased to hear from you and correspond via e-mail.

Read Steve Depuy’s Diary entry at http://www.3ad.org/32ar/32ar_2/32ar_2_csc_diary_depuy.htm 3AD Cold War service for some (including myself) encompassed the full spectrum of good times, not so good times, and everything in the middle. Steve is on point when it comes to providing a reality check regarding what Cold War service was about for many of us. No, Steve doesn't know that I'm making this posting & I hope he'll leave it in the guestbook when he does read it.

Enjoyed the photos of the theater and gym, my second floor barracks window faced both.

Also for those who are interested, there are several people listed in www.classmates.com, which allows you to also list your military assignments in addition to high school. Found my old platoon leader through the site.

Just curious. Maybe there are some old friends out there who remember our good and sad times. President Kennedy's extension of oversea duty. The president's visit to the 3AD. Then the sad day in November, 1963 when the president was killed in Dallas, TX . Charlie's place? etc.

Sorry…for those who were not informed before, the following Kasernes in Hanau no longer exist:

Francois (is now a large shopping center) Yorkhof (new Hanau City Police Department) Hessen Homburg (just sitting there still)

Butzbach completely to include E Co. 122 MSB, PLDC and Kirchgöns (the Rock)

Gelnhausen is completely closed 3AD and V-Corps Headquarters (Drake Kaserne etc.) Frankfurt completely closed but the 92nd General Hospital still stands in glory and hasn't been touched. The German government actually still mows the lawn and keeps up the place. It still has the old elevators with NO DOORS! It just goes up one side and down the other and doesn't even stop at each floor…you have to jump out/in when it comes by! Anybody remember those (the hospital at all)?

Tell us your story!

David

Another good site to check out is www.usarmy.com. They have a good site, I logged on and found an old friend in the first five mikes. 3AD was an experience, some of it good, some not so good. Enjoyed Germany, miss the food and beer. Remember seeing a damn sight of mud and snow at Hohenfels, and dust in Graf. Can't remember what Spearhead stood for, but our motto was, it ain't Spearhead, its Beerhead. Scouts Out.

Still searching for anyone in Ayers at that time.I have the 1963 3AD yearbook,it lists all the units and has company pictures. Have copied them for a few who asked . Am still looking for a "pickle",if you have an extra let me know.

Dan O`Leary A Co. 3/33

Currently have 4 pickle crests in stock in the store, also 2 tiger battalion crests, and a tiger battalion challenge coin. An old pin back (WWII era?) 33d crest along with an order of new Ira Greene 33d Armors are on the way as well. Get em while I have them because they are not easy to come by. Also down to 14 of the origonal style Association Mug, when they are gone, we will not reproduce this style anymore and they will be collectors items.

Sorry I haven't kept everyone posted! The following bases have closed down recently:

Edwards Kaserne, Drake Kaserne, V-Corp Headquarters, Butzbach (is being turned into a State Prison), Bad Kreuznach and Bad Tolz. In FY2001 there are no planned closures yet. In 2005 Rhein-Main Airbase will be turned over and will end the ERA of the 3AD bases completely. There is not much left of the Air Base…just the BX/PX Commissary, a few buildings (if you compare the size to the pre-GulfWar ERA. And the Kitty Hawk still sits in front of the Airbase. I hope someone deserving gets to keep her and all the monuments that are there! Its really sad…but we are hanging in there.

Love all you "Spearheads"

A few hours ago I saw the new release movie, Thirteen Days (w/ Kevin Costner). When the decision is made for U.S. forces worldwide to go to DEFCON 3 I was hoping against hope that a few seconds of film could show the Duty Officer, CCB, 3rd Armored Division, Coleman Kaserne, Gelnhausen, receiving the DEFCON 3 message. It would have added to the “worldwide” emphasis of DEFCON 3, especially since the Warsaw Pact forces were on War Alert. Maybe 2 seconds with an initial shot of CCB HQ building w/ the words, “Gelnhausen, Germany” superimposed on the screen, then switch to, say, a second and a half shot of the CCB Duty Officer, left sleeve to the camera, getting the DEFCON 3 message. I’m sure the Germans would have reasonably rented out a few feet of the old CCB/2d Brigade Headquarters Building, for making that few seconds of film. The Bundeswehr might have loaned an old M113 or two for paint up to US Army 1962 standard, to be shown outside the CCB Duty Officer’s window. I realize that armored units from Ft. Hood in CONUS were being readied for a possible Cuban invasion. Does anyone recall how many Soviet divisions (including armored divisions) were on the Soviet’s side of the Fulda Gap facing the sector covered by the three combat commands of the U.S. 3rd Armored Division? (Those 13 days occurred during my assignment to the S3 staff, 2nd Armored Rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry, CCB, 3AD.)

Was a member of 2/227 AV; III/V platoon on Fliegerhorst Kaserene working out of the old Nato site 5. Platoon leaders were 1LT Kordenbrock-CPT before he left Germany and CW2 Stump. Unit was deactivated in summer of 1989 for the transistion to the AH-64's. Went on to complete remainder of tour with 4-8 CAV as the class III NCOIC. Went to Fort Bragg in April of 1990 and served with the 1st Corps Support Command during the Gulf War. Started out at the infamous cement city, we then attained a hard site right next to cement city called the ICC compound moved on to log base Walnut 18 miles from the Iraqi border in the northern sector and the followed MSR Texas into Iraq and set up log base Romeo. Spent a total of 7 months in the middle East, 14 Sep 90-14 Mar 91. Served in Korea also(2ID-camp Stanley), as well in the operations that took place in Haiti attached to the 10th Mountain. Served a total of 12 years active duty with an additional 2 in the reserves and tossed my boots over the wire if you know what I mean. Of all the places and units I served with, my stint with 3AD was by far the most enjoyable, and with the fondest memories. I never experienced the feeling of belonging that I did with the 3AD anywhere else and will never forget all the fine soldiers fellow NCO's and Officers I served with. Take care and God Bless! A few changes with the Association store, we now accept credit cards. We also are stocking some unit crests. We have both new and old crests available for many units. We even have a few old WWII crests for sale. Contact me if you are interested in crests and I can let you know if I have yours available. You can also check at the store, most of them are listed although sometimes I have some in stock that have not gotten posted yet. We also have 7 copies of "The Incredible Year" written by a member of 3AD Artillery covering from Normandy to the end of the war. The books are selling for $27.95 each plus $4 shipping. If you check at Borders, the same books sells for around $50.

I have many fond memories of my time in the 3AD. Sadly, I've lost touch with most of the people I had the honor of serving with. If anyone remembers me, I'd love to hear from you.

To anyone with just a little patience: I am desperately trying to locate someone who was in the Army and I know was stationed in either Fliegerhorst or Pioneer Kaserne in October 1959. I have a name, but am more concerned about locating a Yearbook of something that contains the names of the US troops that were in either of these locations during this time period. Is there a library at these locations that may have some historical information that might help me locate my friend. Would the Army War College in Carisle (PA?) contain such information? It's really tough finding someone who can provide the leads necessary in locating my friend. I've tried Army Personnel Records in St.Louis, MI, but they indicated that in the early 70's there was a fire that destroyed records for individuals who were in the Army during this time period. Again, I'll be most greatful for any information that will get me on the right road. I was just under the impression that given there was a website for the 3D Army that someone would be able to assist me. I currently live in Maryland in the US. Patiently awaiting someone to contact me. Thanks.

Steve, Hi ! I request a refund of my 3AD.org dues if that is possible. You can tear up the check and save yourself time and postage. This is an interesting chat room. I'll request membership again when I am too old for REAL TIME adventure. At that time it will be fun to talk about those GLORY DAYS gone by fast as the wink of a young woman's eye ! God Bless you all. SPEARHEAD !!! Bye ! YBIC Art.

The point was that this is not a chat room. Its a place to leave notes in the hope that other people who knew you would find you so that you could be reunited with old friends, and tell stories about your 3AD experience. We hope to have a chat room some day but don't yet. I contacted the Treasurer and he will send you a refund. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Anyone that was around then feel free to e mail me. I got out of the Army in 89. I'm back home in Cincinnati, OH. I work security and teach Martial Arts. The Rock!!!!

This is a forum to find old friends and tell stories about your 3AD experience. It is not here to take shots back and forth at people or to share theories on all the problems in the world today or our government. This does not just apply to Arts comments but also to other. I have tried the past year to leave most things go to allow freedom of speech in the guestbook. But things are getting a little carried away and I am going to be forced to be deleting and editing entries until things get a little more respectable. Lets keep this guestbook relating to the 3AD and our experiences in it and stay away from all the other stuff please.

Steel Oscar…Steel Oscar…this is Black 6 Quebec over!

Great site! It brought back some great memories…REFORGER, Warfighter, and the lounge we had at Camp Kasarene.

I was with HHB Divarty all the way through the redesignation to HHB, 42nd FA BDE and the move to Ft. Polk. Greatest bunch of folks I have ever served with.

Good luck to all the Spearheaders in the new year!

Would love to talk to some of the old guys! I would love to get a copy of the battle history for 2nd Brigade during the Gulf War if anyone has it.

Just a quick note from this ole Army Brat, my father was CWO4 Claude T. Cook Jr, I will never forget Gelnhausen and my german friends there. Through the "old Gelnhausen web site", I found some of my old friends,Michael, Heiner, Crista, and Inge. I was so happy to hear from them and I am still trying to find one more. Anyone know the whereabouts of Karlchen Newmann, hope its spelled right, he was called "Charlie". If you know of him or his whereabouts please contact me. Thank you for making this website.. Carole Cook

Great Job on the page. Thanks for remembering all that has or had given unselfishly for so many years. Hears hoping and praying that our comrades and friends guarding the walls of freedom will have a peaceful year of nothing more than routine training.
