It's been along time since I got back to the World, but I still remember all the good times, and the bad. I'd also like to know if there is going to be a reunion of 2/36 Inf. If so when, and where. ALAWAYS REMEMBER THE ROCK

December, 1963: the first M577 command tracks arrive in the 48th Infantry (both battalions). Some of the comments: “We will be able to walk around in the back of the things”; “They look like they might be a bit unstable on sidehills”; “Think of it as they’re only a little bit bigger a target than a 113.”

My father, Lee, has been deceased since 1972 but if anyone remembers him I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I recall he mentioned landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day and I know he received a ring with the word Westwall on it. He was part of a tank crew and was wounded so I'm not sure when exactly he was sent home.

I am interested in hearing from anyone who was a part of HHC 3AD or 5/158 AVN REGT. I was a medic @ Drake/Edwards Kaserne TMC, under Chief Hatch and Maj. Quigg Davis. Omar Alexander was my first boss, then there was SGT Gloria Williams. Friends included Gregory "G" Jordan, Melinda Collins, and George H. Smith. If you recognize any of these names chances are we know each other. Also interested in finding those people that served in Desert Storm with me. Demetrius Orr, William "Bill" Clark, Skinner, & ERickson.

Went through basic with C Co., then to A Co. then went overseas on the Upshure in spring 56, to Friedberg. I remember our briefing after arriving at Ray Barracks. My recollection of it was "You're here to stop the Russians when they attack, we expect you to hold them for three days, until re-enforcements arrive. Welcome to Germany. Have a Good Time !" Yeah, right !! Learned to ride motorcycles there, and help form the Knob Knights motorcycle club with Sonny Owens, Don Shoemaker, Bob "Lucky" Howard, and many other fine friends.

Went on to serve in Vietnam and retired in 1976 as a CWO Helicopter Pilot.

WELCOME HOME To all who served and survived.

DUKE

Don't know what the most recent designation of my unit might have been. When I joined it, it was the 122d Ordinance Bn, later became 122d Maintenance Bn, when I left, it was 3rd Armored Maintenance Bn. Headquarters & Company A on Fliegerhorst Kaserne.

Very interesting site – stumbled onto it purely by accident. Keep up the good work!

Started out with Co. A 2nd ARB 46th Inf (Redesig)then unit changed to Co."A" 2nd ARB 36th INF (Actv) then finally to Co. "A" 3rd Bn 36th INF (REorgn), all within a three year period. And never left the Rock. What I'm Looking for is The unit Crest for each Battalion. I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for them.

I guess this is the price you have to pay for being young. If anyone knows where I can find replacements please e-mail me.

Also any one out there who were in the units with me , drop a line and lets chat.

Arrived Dec 1961 Francois Kaserne Hanau – 36th Med Bn, later transferred to the 3AD Band 1962 at Drake then Edwards Kaserne. I visited the area as a civilian 1988, 1998 and 1999. Francois Kaserne is well maintained, however, Drake and Edwards are in bad shape. I send some photos to the webmaster taken in 1998, maybe they will appear soon. I retire (again) in 2004, I may live in Frankfurt for a few months each year, I speak fluent German, having had a German wife. I would like to hear from any 3AD Band members.

I hope none of my fellow soldiers from the 23rd confuse me with the Berry from the 36th Inf. He must not have left the barracks during his tour. I for one am very proud of my service with the 3AD. The threat that we faced was very real. Does anyone remember when they blocked the Autobahn? I do, both times. Life was not easy for the engineers. It was either cold, wet, and usually muddy. Graf was nasty as was Hoenfels. I love it all. So to the other Richard Berry, think about what you said and apologize to the rest of us who served with pride. Thanks to all who served and kept us free!

I was really disappointed when the 3rd A.D. was deactivated. Our proud divisions history and lineage appeared to have disappeared in to the dark mists of military history. I had served there with great pride and was proud to consider myself a life-time 3rd A.D. soldier, and fortunate to have served in one of the finest Armored Divisions in the U.S. Army, and the world. It is wonderful to find a site dedicated to our Divisions achievements and fine soldiers, regardless of their tour of service.

I remain, respectfully yours.

I served with 45th Med. 3AD from 1981-1983, and also served in Frankfurt at the TMC there at, if I remember correctly, Drake Kaserne. I attended the Nijmegan Marches in 1982 and was sent to Heidelberg for Medical Proficiency Training where I shared the Honor Graduate Award with a Medic from another unit(we shared identical scores!). From 3AD, I was sent to 4/12th Air Cav, in sunny Fort Polk, Louisianna, where I served as the Clearing Platoon Procurement and Medical Supply Specialist. I could aquire, con, beg or trade for anything!!! I am now a civilian working for the Veteran's Administration as a Registered Pharmacy Technician and I also work in a civilian hospital as a Certified Respiratory Therapist. Good, hard 3AD discipline has served me well!!!

I was a member of the 92nd MP Co that was OPCON'd to 2nd Bde, 3AD during the Gulf War. 2nd Bde (Iron Bde) was the first to make contact with the Republican Guard during a dusk to dawn battle in Feb 91. Intelligence gathered from EPW's by my Kuwaiti interpreter held us in place and 3rd Bde then flanked and destroyed the remaining Iraqi armor that were dug in. Not being an Armor Div troop is was a rather harrowing experience to see all of the destruction that was left in our path from that battle.

I was in the Signal platoon (MOS 31C) for HHC 1ST BDE. Worked in the BDE HQ with Maj Richards, SFC Dunlop, SSG Richardson, SSG Wilson. Anyone remember these people? Please email at above address if you do. I ETS'd in May '90. I miss Kirchgoens and Butzbach. I do not, however, miss running around "The Rock" for PT, ha ha. I heard they moved everyone to Hohenfels, or Graffenwoer. Anyone know about this? Anyone know MSG Sheldon Kluck? He should be a SGM by now. If I am not mistaken, he was headed to the SGM academy in 1989. Anyone remembering me and wishing to get in touch, please do so. For you 31C's from that time, I always ended my transmissions with KKK HOSER KKK. I remember a Louisiana native being in the 143rd that saved my but when Division NCS kicked me off the net one night for being a butthead. I would triple key my transmitter and he would reply in kind, and I'd send my traffic using his call signs. I LOVED IT. NOBODY CAUGHT ON TO THAT…HA HA HA

just got back from germany. during my stay in Frankfurt I went by where the main post exchange used to be. now there is going to be the Hessian state Police Beueau (Polizei Praesidium) The monster building that housed V Corps HQ's (Abrams Building) now back to the old german name IG Farben. It is being totally restored by the Germans and turned into a university. Went up to Butzbach to check out Schloss kaserne. Now it is known as Schloss Park. All of the barracks have been torn down except for old Service Battery building and the Schloss itself. Those are of historical importance. The building that housed Bn HQ's (Puzzle Palace) has been renovated. The annex has also been restored. The kaserne is to be turned into a residential park with townhouses. The center of town is now a pedestrian mall emanating from the square out onto all of the streets that lead to it. Very pleasant place.

Again, I’m trying (through this excellent page) to located Steve Greenwood serving in the 3AD stationed at the Gibbs barracks, Frankfurt in the year 1966-69. There must be someone out there, which can give me some help!

– Which units of the 3AD were stationed at the Gibbs barracks in that time period and where is they located in the States? Any name of high ranking officers which can be of any help?

– Any idea where I can start looking for more details about Steve Greenwood (Social Security No., Personal No. etc.)

All feedback’s will be highly appreciated by al the family members behind this announcement.

If I get any result from this search I will let you all know!

Best regards, Harald Bern (Asker, Norway)

Very interesting site. My uncle Sgt. Lloyd W McCoy from Iowa, joined the 36th AIR in 1942. I have his original yearbook? from basic training. He was wounded twice from what i'm told and was then KIA on February 28th 1945. I was told that he was possibly killed while held up in a house for the night when he or someone else was cleaning a weapon. I also have one of his dogtags, purple heart and a picture/postcard with his photo on it that he sent my aunt from England. Sure wish i knew more about him. i also would like to obtain service records etc. for my dad who my uncle raised. I understand that I cannot join your group, however please keep up the great work and thanks to all the veterans. Mike McCoy

I was stationed at Friedberg, Ray barracks for two tours. My first tour was from 1974-76, and I loved that post and area so much, I reenlisted in 1979 just to go back to Germany. As luck would have it because there was no housing for my family and I, we were able to go back to Friedberg, to Ray Barrack where there was more than enough housing. My Nickname when I was there from 74-76 was "YOGI", if you remember me please contact me at above e-mail. Would like to hear from anyone from that time frame.

My brother commanded tank companies at Camp Polk & made major in Feb 1942-he served overseas; remained an army officer-served in Korea-retired in 1962 with rank of colonel. He lived in Lake Waukomis, Mo. until he died in 1970. He is buried at Ft. Levenworth National Cemetery in Kansas. If any of you knew Bob, I would like any information about his service that you remember. He earned a bronze star; but so did many of you. Thanks for any info.

On December 26th 1944 a tank fell down a bridge in Hesperange (Hesperingen) near the maintown Luxemburg (Luxemburg/Europe) and three of the US – soldiers inside were killed. Only the driver and the MP-man survived. As we know from the archives it could have been the 3rd Armored Division coming from France to enter the battle of Bulge. As we don't have any information about the persons who were killed, the town-government of Hesperange is looking for any information about the accident of the tank driving to the french frontier. Where can I get informations (such as official reports, after battle reports, pictures or the names of the three victims) ? The local government of Hesperange would like to erect a monument to honour those soldiers and our association would like to publish an article about that accident (we have two eye-witness-reports and pictures) in a book about Hesperange (Luxemburg)at the beginning of 2001. Who can help me even if it's only for a hint ???

They are Gary Sueymoto of B 3/5, Marty Wardman of D 3/5, Estavan Franco of D 3/5, Chad Garrett of D 3/5, and a man simply known as Bassette also of D 3/5.I wouldn't mind hearing from any other Delta Dogs out there either. Thanks in advance. Black Knights!, James Pickral

I was in bco 122d maintenance at fliegerhorst, in Hanau, Germany from Nov. 71 to Nov. 75. When I first got there It was Hq/A company an then in late 72 or early 73 in changed unit designation to b. company. I would like to locate an SSG, Jack Goddard and SSG. James freeman. Does any out remember SSG Wesley Bray commonly known as POP. He ran the snack Bar that we had that was upstairs by the motor pool office in the shop. I would enjoy hearing from anyone that was stationed at fliegerhorst at the time that I was there. thanks.

This is real good stuff on this site. Where are all of you Tankers from the 13th? There are only a couple of us on here. An old tanker said you were probably still trying to start your 48s. If he is right…give it up……it's too late…You missed the cold war! WE WON!…… "I guess".

It is with great sadness that I must tell of the passing of Darrell D. Moore former Plt (CSC 3/36 Inf.) and First Sgt(I belive one of the companies in 2/33). Darrell was retired from the Army and worked for the PX system in Giessen. He was due to retire in sixteen days. He was a great platoon sargent and respected by all those who served with him. He will be missed. "Scouts Out"

Looking to hear from the men at the end of the road who worked 7 days a week at the Univac 1004 site under CWO Stavenesly. Sgt Pluff Detroit, R Stroud AR, Small CA, Olson CA, Fletcher GA, M.Kalina OH, D.Chase V IN, S Travonovitch OH , Harris? and anyone I forgot. Still have my SeaCaps Mug and I can't remember what the anchronym stands for. Other than the routine of the unit my first day reporting in, there were two armed guards on the flower pots at the barracks front. The CO wife donated two flower pots and some of the boys returning from the club smashed them. It made the "Oversea's Weekly" I would like someone who remembered the name of "Top" from this time, he put me on guard duty at the ammo dump on my 21st birthday. Since I worked 3rd shift it used to drive him crazy that I could sleep in and not make formation. Remember the second CO Lt.Aquilarra calling us "My Little Tigers"? My buddy "Frosty Mathieu" would always mimic him and paid the price when he caught him drinking the night before the IG inspection.

I regret to inform you that SP4 Dennis Mathieu Chicago, IL passed away Oct. 1981.

Webmaster please delete my prior sign in, I had a few, remembering back. To Top and Lt. Aquilarra, no hard feelings and I wish all of you out there, my best wishes. JC

As one of thousands of draftees in Aug '55 I was assigned for Basic and Advanced Basic to Ft. Knox, Co D, 33rd Tnk Bn. In May '56 our unit left by train to Brooklyn Army Terminal. After 5-6 days at sea we arrived at Bremerhaven, boarded a troop train and ended up at Gelnhausen. Our brand-new M-48 tanks were waiting for us. At least once or twice a month we had an alert in the early morning hours and moved with the tanks into our alert area in the Langenselbold woods, usually bringing the rush-hour traffic on the roads outside of Gelnhausen to a near standstill. Twice a year we went to Vilseck (Grafenwoehr) for 4-6 weeks of maneuvers and tank firing. As an avid photographer, I still have hundreds of b/w and color shots of that period. From 1957 till my return to the US in Jan '60, and on special duty as a UP (Unit Police), I ran the small civilian pass control shack near the PX-gate. I was born in Kassel, Germany and immigrated to Nebraska at age 18 in '51. Going back to Germany in US uniform or seeing the country from the tank turret were quite interesting experiences. I met a German girl in Gelnhausen who has been my wife now for more than 42 years. We go to Germany every year. If you haven't been there for many years, you wouldn't recognize it. Hardly any US military presence there anymore. And Gelnhausen is quite built up and, it seems, one third of all people in the streets are non-Germans. Contact me (wscherp@earthlink.net) if you were there about the same time. We live about 45 mile NE of San Francisco, CA.

Scouts Out!!!!!! I was pretty disappointed in not seeing any entries from 4-8 Cav. To start off, I would like to say how nice it is to see so many 3AD veterans commenting about their history!! I started with the unit 3-33 Armor. (Pickles) We then renamed the unit 4-8 Cav. Went to Desert Storm with, in my book, the best damn Scout Platoon in the military. Most people don't remember the name PFC Fisher who was the driver on my Bradley. He, while searching bunkers ran into a very bad blister agent which turned out to turn our unit upside down. I am currently a disabled veteran from injuries directly related to hard times in the military.

Could anyone out there that may know of any other soldiers that served with HHC 4-8 Cav get a hold of me. If possible other Scout members. Thank You!!!! "Sgt" Jeff Hanson

I was a Medic at the Rock from 74 to 76. Back then the only thing we thought about was getting back to the "world". Now I realize what a great time I had. Anyone who was there during this period, email me. I currently live in Ocean City New Jersey. Anyone remember "Charlie's" in Butzbach? Is it still there? Also, does anyone know the whereabouts of Gary Casupang? He was a medic with me then, last I heard was that he was stationed in Ft. Benning (turned into a lifer!)

I am an author/ historian / collector and have a WW2 bronze star, purple heart and good conduct medal awarded to a 3rd armored division soldier named A.W. Erck who was killed while bringing up armor at the Meuse River. This is all the info I have….Are there any family members of Soldier Erck's that can shed any light on this? Any 3rd Armored Soldier's that remember him? If you can prove your relationship to Soldier Erck I will be glad to return the medals to the family. I was at Fliegehorst from nov. 1971 to nov. 1975. When I first got there it was h/a company and then it changed to b co. I would be very interested in hearing from any one who was stationed there at this time. I think that this website is great, keep up the good work

Hi, My uncle, 1Lt. Norman C. Streit, served with the 3AD according to a list I found of G.I.'s killed in WWII. This list indicated that he was assigned to the 36th infantry battalion, 3rd Armored Division. He died in battle on Dec 25, 1944. That's about all I know. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone that knew Norman or knows anything about what the unit was doing at that time.

Thanks, Dave Streit dstreit@streitandpeters.com

I am hoping someone may be able to perhaps give me a lead on my search for my second cousin Stephen Duncan. We lost touch with the family around 1965 on moving house. We used to write to his mother Florence Duncan.

Stephen Duncan was born in 1934 in Chicago. At the age of 19 he was Private Stephen Duncan, fire directional controller assigned to the 71st Armored Field Artillery battalion at Camp Chafee Arkansas and had graduated from Lyons Township High School in June 1953.

His parents names were BROOKS DUNCAN, born 2.12.1902 , died 4.2.1988. SSN 320-07-2658 Issued Illinois Wife FLORENCE DUNCAN nee BRAYNE born 16.2.1903, died Feb.1990 SSN 320-07-2629 Issued Illinois The residence given on the Social Security Death index was 65804 SPRINGFIELD, GREENE, MISSOURRI Before Springfield they were living in La Grange (in 1961 anyway) and before that Chicago. I don't know when they moved to Springfield.

I do hope you will be able to give me some lead. It is very difficult tracing from England!

Hope to hear from you Thank you in advance

Heather Smith Englan

Anyone that served with the 503d between 59 and 63, that has an interest in attending a reunion may contact me at the e-mail address listed. We currently have a group of about 20 ex-MP's that meet every two years.

Hal, I tried to use e-mail, but it was undeliverable. My understanding of the accident was that to many increment bags of powder were used. It caused the HE round to over shoot the impact area and land in or adjacent to a morning troop formation. I believe one or more officers were court martialed and the private that pulled the trigger lost it and went out on a section 8.

Hey guys, make sure you put in your 3AD unit and the time you were there…that's what I look at when I'm scanning the messages. Too much German beer and too much time in the EM club, has burned out too many of my brain cells to remember many names of the guys I was with. I just hope they'll remember me.

I was supply clerk in B Co. 13 Cav at KG (the Rock) from July 58-January 60. I was cold in Graf, home sick in Wildfleken and tense at Fulda Gap; also picked my share of dandelions off the parade field in the spring. Came home January 60 and was told by American Legion I was ineligible to join because I was not in service in time of War or conflict. My eligibilty date is still not on application. Hope to hear from old friends who remember me. I like this websidte, just joined.

I was assigned to HHC 1/48 from May 0f 1987 until March of 1989 when I was transfered to B Co 1/48. I know we changed to 4/18 IN I think in June of 1989. While I was assigned to HHC I worked in the S-1 shop as their M577A2 driver and performed whatever other duties they could think of. When I got to Gelnhausen I was real suprised that I was pulled for duty in S-1 instead of going to a line company. LTC John Everson was the BN Co when I got there and CMS Emerson was one hell of a Sergeant Major! Everybody I came in contact with during my time in HHC and B Co, as well as the rest of the battalion were really stand up folks! I had a great time once I finally made it to B Co in March of 1989. At that time Lt Col StOnge was the BN Co and B Co CO was Capt Mark Hayhurst who left and was replaced by Capt Anthony Phillips. Our 1SG was Henson, but then he left also and was replaced by SFC Lewis. I was assigned to 1st Platoon "Bandits" with SFC John Santiago as the Plt Sgt. Some of the other 1st Plt guys were SFC Samuel Miller, SFC David Cabanilla, SSG Leonty, Sgt Bridwell, and the lsit could go on! SFC Mark Mello the 3rd Plt Sgt was also a really great guy. Folks from HQ kept things rolling along like SFC Soules………even when things got a little hairy out in the TOC while we were in the field he always kept us laughing. We used to make runs from the ALOC to the TOC and it seems like those S-3 guys were always laughing about something hahahahaha. Great Fellas! Some things I won't miss about Gelnhausen are the "block haus" and "cabbage patch" runs. Running through a patch of rotten cabbage after harvest season was a little rough on the senses at 6:00 am hahahahaha I wish I had back every DM I spent on bier at the Blue Knight and at Sachsenhausen in Frankfurt!!!! I would be so rich now hahahahahahahaha One of the most memorable moments is when B Co went to Berlin in 1989 and trained at "Doughboy City"……we froze hahahahaha!!!!!!! Go to the eastern side before the Wall fell was something I will never forget. I would really be curious to see what Gelnhausen and Coleman Kaserne are like today………I got a post card not too long ago from a German friend of mine and she said the post is still open but is occupied by German forces now. What memories we all have huh? I am really sorry that I never stayed in contact with all the people I promised I would……a lot of good friendships I sure miss. Anyway, hope all is well with everyone and don't be strangers……….take care.

Travis Sinnard

Served w/ the 1/36 Alpha "NO SLACK" Co. transfered to Bde. S-3 as Bde. draftsman and illustrator. Prepared briefings for dignataries; civilian, NATO, and WARSAW pact; in the field, and back at Ray Barricks. Helped perform Ops duties, radio traffic, map updates, unit coordination, generally keep the Col. & S-3 Ops SGM happy. Those were great years for the Thundering Third Brigade. 3AD brought us a LOT of visitors and we were its shining jewel. One hell of a good lookin' bunch and Elvis served here too. Fulda Gap border duty, Hoenfels, REFORGER, Graf, I remember it well. No Slack, Thunder, and Spearhead … FOREVER

Pete Hempfling (tinajojo@aol.com) in an earlier posting described that he made a video of Coleman Kaserne and Gelnhausen scenes last month while on vacation. The tape is very good and brought back a lot of memories. On another subject, Ed Gould you left a message in this guestbook back in 9/98 about VUA. I tried to email you but the address is not active. You still out there? Where on this site do I find the list of 3ad Commanders over the years, I remember seeing it, however now cannot find it. jimL

Hal, Having had KP the day before the accident, when the round came in I had just climbed into the back of our supply truck for a ride to join our company in the field. The ground shook, the blast was defening, and the sky went dark from all the debris in the air. At the time,I didn't know what had happened, I just knew that it wasn't supposed to. I have the picture of the memorial ceremony that appeared in the Stars and Stripes. I still get chills when I look at it. I can e-mail you a copy of the picture if you'd like.

Also served proudly as the 2nd Brigade Signal Officer for COL Gary L. Paxton, 1987 to 1988 before assuming the S3 duties of the 143rd Signal Battalion subsequent to serving as MG Paul Funk's Assistant Division Signal Officer during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Worked for many great officers during this time that are now great general officers leading our Army in the 21st Century. BG Pete Chiarelli and MG Pat Cavanaugh just to mention two great officers and mentors. My four years in the Spearhead Division were the toughest and most rewarding years of my military service. God Bless all Spearheaders and their families everywhere.

We have 32 of our origonal order of Association Coffee Mugs left. Every time we order mugs, we are going to change them in some way. There are only 48 of the origonal style in existance and they will reordered with a different style. The chance for you to aquire one of these initial order of rare mugs is slipping fast. Don't kick yourself later because you missed this chance, check out the Association Store Today. Two more sold so there are 30 left, make that 27. They are going fast people. This is the last update I will make prior to announcing they are sold out.

It`s been a while since my last post, but still do not see much from the 3/33. Where are all you all hiding? Had many good times, but also some I would rather forget. How could anyone who served on the 'ROCK" forget it. Lets hear from some of the former members of the 3/33. And also what has happened to the 3/33 assoc. Sent in my membership in Jan. still no answer, and check never cashed. Fellow Pickle,Dan P.S. ALWAYS REMEMBER TOM DANOWSKI,KIA IN VIETNAM.

I have completed and am about to publish a fictionalized memoir, "Fate's Finger" about tank warfare as seen through the eyes of a medium tank platooon leader in France, Belgium, and Germany. There are few such platoon-leader accounts of tank combat in the ETO, since most of the books on armored warfare have been writen by the generals and professional historians and not by company grade veterans who actually crewed the M4A3s (a recent book "The Eyes of Orion", written by five Desert Storm tank and recon platoon leaders from the 24th Inf. Div. (Mech) is an exception, and well worth reading by WWII tankers who had far inferior ordinance but shared sthe same fears, foibles and foul-ups as the Desert Storm tankers). Anyone interested in "Fate's Finger" will find it reminiscent of the tough times and the good times, expressed in the jargon and earthy language of Spearheaders during WWII. If you are interested in being notified when the book is published, please contact me at my e-mail address. I would especially love to hear from any 33d AR tankers who served with Cols. Lovelady and Wellborne.

I was in the first 1500 "selectees" who arrived in Camp Polk in late June, 1941. Served with Service Battery, 54th AFA Bn. throughought until transferred, with other "high point" men of the Division, to the 6th Armored for shipment home.

Arrived in Boston Harbor in September, 1945, almost exactly two years after shipping overseas from New York.

I probably had more time in the 3rd Armd Div than anyone else. In addition to July 1941 to Jan 1946 when it was deactivated After a three year tour in Japan for 1947 to 1950, I served with them when the Division had been reactivated as a basic training unit at Fort Knox in 1950. I went to Korea in 1952 until jst after the cease fire in 1953. In 1955 I was assigned again to the Division, went overseas with them in 1956 and served there until 1959, when I rotated back to the states at Fort Bliss until I retired Aug 1961.

Hello, Carl Lotz! I do remember Stubbs, Renner, and Lt. Nowak; the faces escape me, but definitely the names hit home. I think Renner ran around with a Johnny Moore, Stubbs was from Portland (?). How am I doing so far? Moore was in the squad bay just to the left of the stairs, 2nd floor. So was I in the beginning.

Good to hear from a fellow Cav alumni!

The 3AD and Atomic Demolition Mines on the E. German Border in the Fulda Gap. (Part #1 of 2)

1. From page 142 of the book AMERICAN MILITARY IN EUROPE (by Dr. Christopher S. Raj, New Delhi, India: ABC Publishing House, 1983), “[F]rom August 1961 … there was a demand for an increase and not decrease in US troop levels in Europe. In 1962, as the Administration and Congress believed that the Berlin crisis was not over, and as the Cuban missile crisis also occurred, the general trend of Congressional debate was in favor of either retaining the existing troop levels or increasing them. . . . In 1965, however, a few Senators demanded withdrawal of some troops from Europe.”

2. On page 81 of the December 1975 issue of MILITARY REVIEW: PROFESSIONAL JOURNAL OF THE US ARMY (US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas), the beginning of the article “Shield and Sword: Thoughts on the 20th Anniversary of the Founding of the Warsaw Pact” identifies the Warsaw Pact founding date as May 14, 1955.

3. Page 49 of the July 1973 issue of MILITARY REVIEW states that the Warsaw Pact powers “have been pressing” for a “Conference on European Security and Cooperation” since “the mid-1960s.” (Khruschev was deposed in October 1964.)

Hello to Ray Thomas, Chuck Bolliger, and all 3AD Association members!

I am waiting for my shiny new membership card, as I sent the check off last week. Glad to finally be on board. Chuck, I got your e-mail the other day; just couldn't respond. One more comment on Mr. Berry, and it's behind us all, I hope. Thank you for your response, Richard; I think we all are large enough to accept your apology in the spirit in which it is given. I, for one, have done so. Hope to see you on the membership rolls soon. I am located in Everett, WA, in case some of you live in the Northwest. I'm in the book.

Regards, Phil Mitchell

The following is from Colin Powell’s book MY AMERICAN JOURNEY (NY: Random House, 1995). “[In December 1958] I was sent to Gelnhausen (which the GIs had Americanized to ‘Glenhaven’), a picturesque town nestled in the valley of the Kinzig River, about twenty-five miles east of Frankfurt. The Soviet zone was forty-three miles to the east. My unit, Combat Command B of the 3d Armored Division, occupied Coleman Kaserne, a former German army post near the Vogelsberg mountains . . . I was assigned as a platoon leader to Company B, 2d Armored Rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry, my first field command—forty men. The first morning I faced them, shivering in the cold at reveille, my reaction was mixed. On the one hand, these soldiers, all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds, were much like the guys I had grown up with at home. On the other hand, the [Ft.] Benning ethic had taken over.” (p. 45) From pages 50-52: “ROTC and Fort Benning had been about officers. Gelnhausen was my indoctrination into what the Army is really about—soldiers. Here in the 48th Infantry, life revolved around the care of our men. . . . I came to understand GIs during my tour at Gelnhausen. I learned what made them tick, lessons that stuck for thirty-five years. … American soldiers will gripe constantly about being driven to high performance. They will swear they would rather serve somewhere easier. But at the end of the day they always ask: ‘How’d we do?’” From pages 52-53: “[The junior officers’] social life revolved around the O-club, which was perched on a hill overlooking the Kinzig River Valley. . . . In those socially incorrect days, we played several drinking games … [One of the games] ended when the person who rolled the twenty-first ace was obliged to chugalug [a 12 oz. mixed drink]. One night, I hit twenty-one three times in a row. I, who am today a social sipper, fulfilled my obligation, downed the stuff, and on the third glass passed out. I was poured into bed only to be hauled out again at 2:00 A.M. for a surprise alert. I had to be strapped to the backseat of my jeep to hold me up. Fortunately for this near-brain-dead lieutenant, that was not a night the Russians chose to come roaring through the Fulda Gap.”

I was in the COHORT unit rotation to Ft.Hood. Became 3/32 armor at Hood. We went from M-60A3's to M1IP's during my stay at "The Rock". Any former "Hellcats" drop me a line.

Judging from the responses to my comments concerning those of us who served in Germany during Vietnam, it seems that most of you feel personally insulted. That was not my intention. The only point I wanted to make was that there is a BIG difference between guarding against an attack that never came and being beseiged at Khe Sahn, cut to pieces at Plehko(sic) or overrun during Tet. I TWICE requested transfer to 'Nam and was denied. My only regret about my Army years is that some poor mother's son who didn't want to be in 'Nam was under fire while I was willing to go but stuck in Germany. He was there because I wasn't. My respects to all who served, no matter where or when.

I am writing on behalf of my father, Frank H. Pier, who served in the 3rdAD. He returned home having earned a Bronze Star and an Oak Leaf cluster as a Platoon Leader. Fortunately he is still alive and well at 88, and I plan on revisiting the 3AD website the next time he is here to visit. He has relayed many stories of his experiences with the 3rd. My father entered the army from Kansas in 1942.

Mr. Berry…BE PROUD!…We were in harm's way almost as much as those true heros who served and died in Nam. I first arrived in Germany in September 1960, and went directly to Graf. The first night I was there 72(I think) soldiers were killed while they slept by some careless Artillery officer who aimed an entire battery of 155's and fired a volley into their bivowack area. It was an accident, but our brothers are STILL dead. Friendly fire…enemy fire…what's the difference? The Cold War was rough!…We were all on edge…We had no idea when Comrad was comming over…and we all knew that we were only a delaying force…If the Reds came (we knew) we were All dead…It was serious stuff I thank God for every soldier who served, and yes died in Europe during OUR WAR!

This is a great site. Keep up the good work. I haven't found anyone I knew yet, but it is only a matter of time. For anyone who hasn't been there yet, check outhttp://www.militaryconnections.com/ . This is a good site for locating old friends from any branch of service. P.S. Does anyone know if they import Licher bier to the states. If so, where? Thanks.
