It’s been a long time, but I still remember all of you. The best time of my life was at "The Rock". The most and dearest memories are from the Storm, I’ll hold them close to me forever! Many nights I sit back and think of you guys, my brothers, and thank God I was part of it all. There is a special place in my heart for Stephans, Stokes and Summerall, God Speed and we will all meet in "The Green"! If any of you see this, E-Mail me at; Dasher823@aol.com. Love ya all!!! SCOUTS OUT!!!

My father, Robert Sleeth, served with the 3rd Armored Division and was wounded. I was introduced to a lady recently, who wants to get in touch with another member of the 3rd Armored. His name is Ernest Joseph DeSoto. Is there any way of locating him or finding our if he is still living? I can be contacted at the above email address.

Thanks, Mark R. Sleeth

Sent in my membership application today.

When I stated in my initial posting that duty with the 2-6 FA was most demanding, that was true, but in retrospect, it wasn’t all bad. When COL French took over as DIVARTY Commander and CSM Fields was replaced, things got a lot better. Hell, we thought we were almost human beings again. Preventive maintanence was treated less as a catch phrase and more as a way of life, and we started to make our road marches without leaving our vehicles all over Germany. Things got to be almost fun again.

After 3 years with the 3AD, 5 years with the 2AD and 2 years with the (horrors) 9th Infantry Division, I’ll take the Spearhead any day. At least we had a sense of mission and a feeling of "we’re all in this together" in Germany, traits sadly lacking during my time with other units.

Anyway, excellent web site, one of of the best I’ve seen in a long while. When I first saw it, I thought it was prepared by a professional hosting company, it’s that good. Great job!

I couldn’t agree with more with the responses that Phil Mitchell and others have directed at this poor soul, Mr. Berry. It must be terrible to have those feelings bottled up inside yourself. He made me think of what Oregon’s Senator Packwood said to the media regarding all the allegations of sexual misconduct, "I just didn’t get it". This man deserves our pity, not our anger.

to the Web Master and associated members:

I have the names of several of the company commanders in the 1-32 during this period if you are interested.

Incidently, the Bandit tank companies were referred to as red, white, and blue. The Bn Commander was Bandit 6, Company A was Red 6, Company B was White 6, and Bandit Blue was Blue 6. We despised all infantry units, hated the swinely Iron Ducks of the 3-32, and never paid any attention to 1-32 who were second class citizens in the 1st Brigade. The Bandits perservered as the Guardians of Right, Protectors of Democracy, and tank gunnery experts second to none. I had the best First Sergeant ever to wear the uniform. His name is 1SG Robert Jerome, and if anybody knows where he is, I would like to get in touch with him.

I was our unfortunate duty however, to be the first M60A2 tank unit, and we suffered under this horrible load. I resigned from the service right as the M1 tanks came into the inventory in 2-5Cav, 1st Cav Divison, Ft Hood, and am told that this is a wonderful machine with a gun that excels. Sorry I missed it, but the old M60A1 was a pretty fine tank also.

I felt that the 3AD was the best assignment that I had. All of the units, infantry, field arty, armor, cav, and support did what it took to be the best. I honestly felt that 3AD lead the pack in USAREUR, and was proud to have been there. I feel particularly fortunate to have been in Ray Barracks with all of the fine soldiers, 1-32, 3-32, 1-36, 2-27, and 122 that were assigned. Interesting note is that in 11 years, this was my only Armor assignment. All the others were in the Cavalry Regiments, but 3AD was the best one (except for VietNam), because of the reality of the mission in those times.

Regards and best wishes, even to those not fortunate to have been Bandits.

Side note, Maj Jarret Robertson (later MG) was my Bn XO, a good friend and a fine soldier. MY daughter was born in 97th Gen Hospital in Frankfurt.

Good web site. My snide comments are in jest, as I have the greatest respect for all of the fine units and soldiers who were there. However, I take particular pride in having been a Bandit,a member of the 32d Regiment, and of the 3d Brigade.

David E Ripley fmr Cpt, Ar Commanding Company C, 1st Bn, 32nd Armored Regiment 1975-1977

I enjoyed being a part of this unit very much.We had a lot of good times there, but we all took our duty assignments very seriously. We were split up a lot on different detachments while we were there. We were headquartered at Drake Kaserne in Frankfurt, but I think I only spent half of my 2 and 1/2 years there. The rest in Hanau, Gelnhausen, and Graf. Our CO Capt Weaver was the greatest. We have a reunion every two years at different locations for the guys that was there in 60-62. It’s great getting together.

MR. BERRY………. I think you have lost the concept of what it meant to serve in the military; it was, simply put, to BE READY to defend. I, for one, am proud to have served along with my fellow "unloaded" soldiers. We all signed the same contract, including you. You have the same right to be as proud of your service as all soldiers, combat or not. As for those who went to combat: to them fell the task at hand. This is called fate. It is also called timing. We have little control of either. "There, but for the Grace of God, go we."

I am EXTREMELY proud, and grateful, for those who had the unfortunate duty of fulfilling their contract to the fullest extent. Because of their sacrifice, we still can enjoy the freedom and liberties we now have.

Thank you, Mr. Depuy, for your response; it was right on the button!

Mr. Berry……come on in out of the cold. There’s room by the fire.

It has been quite awhile since I have been to this sight. I have just read the comments from Vanessa. They really upset me. I am not in the Army, but I am an Army wife. My husband lost some good friends over there. I have spent many nights holding my husband when he would wake up from nightmares crying. I think that this girl needs to learn a little respect for veterans. I hope we all take a lesson from her and teach our children better.

Great site. I’m looking for anyone who was in Bravo 2/36 Inf 1977-80, especially SFC Kohlman, Capt. Bruce Murphy, and "Top" Yamada. I was first in 2nd Plt. then in HQ Plt. as the company armorer. My thanks to Capt. Murphy for being my best man – my wife and I have been married twenty years now. Update: SSG "Chico" Diaz passed away in the early 80’s from cancer. Any responses will be appreciated!

Still looking for Stingers and Vulcans from Bravo Bulldogs. Also still looking for a 2LT from 4-18 INF who’s nasally voice rings through my head periodically with the comment "Shut this engine off right now!" I’m referring to a cantankerous Humvee with a bad glowplug sensor, which I believe holds the record for the longest running military engine in modern times (barring any interference from nasally 2LT’s) Quibley Lives!

The duty in the 2/6th was some of the most difficult I’ve seen. The motor pool was dirt and gravel, and more often than not a sea of mud, the on-going maintanence of our tracks and wheels was of the crisis magagement kind with no long term goals, and the leadership was more often concerned with CYA than their troops welfare. There were some bright spots, but not very damned many. If you left the unit with the same rank you held when you entered, you considered that to be a successful tour.

Mr Berry: I can attest to you that it was equilly as hard being in Germany (Specially on the Rock)as in Vietnam. The loss of life was not an issue but the field duty, leadership and the lack of support to that theatre made it much more miserable than in Vietnam. I could get virtually any piece of equipment i needed as long as it was mission eccential in Vietnam (not so in Germany). And remember only 1 in 10 were on the ground combat troops,in Vietnam or any war or theatre. I went through the Monsoon seasons and the 10 to 15 below zero winters (Ill take the Monsoon). All in all the two places were on pretty much equil ground when it comes down to it. I lost many good friends in Nam and thats the ONLY difference. Funny how the Communists lost eastern Europe and still hold Vietnam. There is now another place simular to Germany 40,000 of our troops face 1,147,000 active troops and 7,450,000 Reserves. 3800 Main battle tanks, 2,270 armored personel carriers, and 11,200 pieces of artillery. 430 combat ships, 50 submarines and 340 support vessles. 850 combat aircraft, 510 support aircraft and 340 specialized combat helicopters. Numbers simular precentage wise to Europe during the late 60s to late 70s. This place is called KOREA. All the North Koreans have to do to take on South Korea and win is WANT TO. My point: ALL SOLDIERS DEPLOYED OVERSEAS ARE IN HARMS WAY. Take care and thanks for your support.

To Richard Berry: The message would have been sent to you alone if there was an E-mail address left by you. I believe that you have done a disservice to yourself, and others that might feel the way you do. Not knowing your circumstances, if is hard for me to judge. During my tours in Vietnam, I felt no rancor for those that were stationed somewhere else. History shows that being a presence in Europe from the end 1945 to 1989 was a good thing, and those that served during the time helped bring about the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, and the end of the Cold War. My three tours in Germany were in different locations, 56th FA Brigade, 8th Infantry Division, and finally in 1st Brigade, 3rd AD. It was my experience that our presence was necessary, and that the soldiers performing that duty could and should be proud of their service. There was a peril, though it was never realized, but preparedness was the reason why, noy something to be ashamed of. It is my belief that all members of the service, whichever service that may be, have a reason to be proud of the part they played, and should make an effort to not resent those that did different from us. Hopefully you will have a good life.

I was with the 1/32 MTB as tank commander and also as Leadership Instructor at the 3AD NCO Academy. Iwas appointed as Honorary Regimental Sergeant Major 32d. Armored Regiment in July 1989 at Fort Hood during the 1st. Cavalry Division re-union. The 1/32 and 3/32 Armor were here at Fort Hood with the 1st. Cavalry Division and went to the Gulf War and returned to Fort Hood till de-activated.

I am searching for a Frank Lesley Gram, who was in Brussels during World War II, or anyone that might know of him. A adult child in Brussels wants to meet their real father. Mr. Berry,  I wished you had had leaders like Capt.Tommie Smith, CWO Robert Martin, Sgt Burkett, Sgt Driggers, Sgt Pierce,  these guys helped mold my life. They taught me how to do a job and to do it well and most of all taught me to respect others no matter what the situation was. There was no way I could have given what these guys gave to their country but a lot of guys were there willing to try.

Although I respect anyone who served in the military I’m tired of all the chest-beating bravado of so many Vietnam-era 3AD vets!Face facts!One-half of all G.I.s who served went to ‘Nam.WE didn’t.I stood guard with an unloaded weapon, never seriously thought the Soviets would attack, was NEVER in any real danger at all.Sure we did our job, but it was nothing to brag about.

Although I don’t feel I  have participated much in any form of chest beating, I personally am offended by your remarks. I gave up the three best years of my youth to serve in the 3d AD in Germany. I have never felt the equal to those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm, and all the other conflicts we were involved in during the time the 3d AD was active in the US Army. But while all of my friends were going to the high school prom, and living the fun life kids do upon graduating. I was over in Germany standing guard duty with an empty rifle a pawn in a political game being played between two countries. My side said, go ahead, take my pawn, but my nuke will get your king. Vietnam was over by the time I was old enough to join, and I happened to get out before we got involved in any other conflict. But don’t act like those of us who were there did nothing and accomplished nothing. If the 3d AD and the other units had not been there, Germany would not be a free country today and who knows how ugly things would have gotten.

I am looking for info on my fathr who passed away. He was in the 3rd armored, originally the 48th, then the 38th. Company A. His picture shows a spearhead patch with a 7 on top, I assume this is the VII corps. He was captured in Germany by the ss near the end of the war on a bridge and sent to a camp. If anyone is familiar with this unit, or my dad, Denzel Eugene Clark, please contact me.

Thanks, Dotti

This is the start of a great website. I have a some pictures of Coleman Kaserne and Gelhausen. I’ll work on getting them scanned in and sent out. I was in the process of rebuilding my webpage and adding a military section. I also have some pictures of Graf and Hohensfels. (ps) I am looking for pictures of the M1A1 that lost its turret on TTVIII at Graf during 1989(personal story).

I do not know what division or year my father in law was in the army, but I do know that he was a medic in the Korean war and was wounded. My question is where could a person find the records of medals issued to him. It would make a very good present to him because all he had was lost and cannot be found. Thank you, any reply would be appreciated! I will find out what division if anyone will write me back.

Hello,

My Grandfather was in the 3rd Armored Division and active in WWII from June 1943 to October 1945. I believe that he rode on a half-track.

He did not talk much about his experiences during the war, and I know little about his military career. I am looking for any general (or detailed) information regarding this time period.

If you may have information, or know of someone who may, I would REALLY appreciate sharing any information. I am very interested in learning anything about this time period in WWII. Please contact me if you have any information.

Also, I would like to thank ALL veterans for serving our wonderful country in time of war. I thank you for my freedom.

Adam Kelley

Sp/4 mechanic(M113,M114).2yrs,4mos+11days on the ROCK.We had 30 guys living in our bay(room),KP + guard duty twice per month,no furniture other than foot+wall lockers, limited passes to get off base.I knew that any NCO or officer who got sent there must have f**ked up real bad. Back then we all hated the ROCK.. but we had it a lot better than the guys in ‘Nam.

I was an 18 yr old track vehicle mechanic (M113+M114).At that time life on the "ROCK" was not much different from basic training…30 guys sleeping in one big room,no furniture other than foot + wall locker,KP + guard duty twice per month, limited passes to get off base.It was that way for the 2yrs,4mos,and 11 days that I had the "pleasure" of living on the ROCK.We drank a LOT, got crazy in Butzbach, Frankfurt, Bad Nauheim. Visited several coutries on leave. Hung out with some of the best guys I’ve ever known in my life. Billy Ray Lindsay,

In response to Jim Chorazy’s "What if…", there is an excellent story called "Team Yankee", by Harold Coyle", which depicts the Tanker war in Germany-US vs. USSR, including the emergency evacuation of dependants etc. The story takes place in the 80’s if I remember right. Coyles’s bad luck was that every book he wrote was overwhelmed by Tom Clancy’s popularity. A badly drawn graphic novel exists out there as well as a video game. A highlight-the main characters wife and children running from the terminal to the plane at Rhein Main as the soviets are strafing the airfield.

I can’t believe I found this site. So many memories: 10+ trips to Graf–arm pit of Germany (best by Train); 2 to Wildflecken; 1 to Hohenfels. God knows how many FTX and CPX’s. Giessen Guard. And now the the fun parts: Trips to Class VI at K.G….Countless hours in Schmied’s or the Pizzeria…Licher Bier; train trips to Frankfurt and the big PX…currywurst and frites at the schnellimbiss by the train station… spending hours listening to a great stereo system (courtesy of the Audio Club in Ffm). I know we did not participate in a war (i was too young, for God’s sake) but as we always said: "War is Hell but peacetime is a M*^%&*^*(K.

Resubmitted with editing (spacing correction): 3AD in the Fulda Gap during Oct 1962 Cuban Crisis — A Scenario: — Fact: US Navy ships prepared to stop & board Soviet freighters carrying on deck missiles to Cuba. Fact: President Kennedy issued a world-wide Alert of US Forces during the late Oct 1962 time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. WHAT IF?: The US Navy had actually stopped & boarded one or more such Soviet freighters on the high seas, and the Soviets had countered with a “reconn in force” across the E. German Border in the Fulda Gap? (Object of Soviet incursion: to occupy a “significant” area of West German territory for purposes of checkmating US actions near Cuba.) What if such a fairly large Soviet armored force had had units which “inadvertently” managed to get past US 14th Armored CAV units stationed at Bad Hersfeld and Fulda? What if the three combat commands of the 3rd Armored Division, recently arrived at their GDP positions in response to the Soviet incursion, were ordered to stop the Soviet penetration?

Hello world. Hey I am looking for anyone that was stationed at Ayers Keserne (the ROCK) during January 1985 til the end of 1986. Just wondering how much has it change before it was decommisioned for US soldier. Especially if you were in Delta or Charlie 2/32. I have to admit of all my time in the Army that had to be my best duty station. Being that we spent a lot of time in the field it beats Fort Knox by a long shot. From training Cadets. Yes, some officer do think they know everything there is to know until they listen to the enlisted "wise choice" well got to go & interesting site. Sgt. Hickmon.

I was a Mechanic at Ayers Kaserne. (63H10). Everybody hated my guts for no particular reason. My room and stuff were constantly being trashed. My co-workers were unbelievably sophomoric. They spread the rumor that I might be "gay" (I’m happily married) so that my toolbox was taken away. I ended up being a driver for Lt. Ringler. We had "race-riots". All-in-all I was glad to get my DD214.

Hello. I am writing in hopes of help from your WWII membership. I am 28 years old, and a graduate of Ball State University of Muncie, Indiana, where I majored in History.

In 1986 I started a small WWII living history museum. It has grown to include both US and foreign uniforms, weapons, equipment, and personal items. There is no building yet, but items are put on display for schools libraries, historical societies, and the like.

In 1987 I began contacting veterans of WWII. To date over 4,100 veterans from 35 countries have been contacted. All the replies are being compiled into a book of veteran "war stories" telling of the war as seen by the VETERAN, not some "official" source or Hollywood ideal. That is the reason for this message. Please find below a series of questions. If you are a veteran of the Second World War, please take a moment or two to answer the questions and return them to me at SNAFU947@YAHOO.COM. Or, if you know of any WWII veteran who is not on the web, please pass this along to them.

-Name, rank, unit -Please describe a particular time in combat. -Were you wounded? If so, please describe the particulars surrounding your wounding. -If not in combat, what was the most memorable event while in the service. -What was the funniest thing to happen to you in the service (if any)? -While no day in the military is "typical", especially in combat, how did you spend a "typical" day in the field? -What sort of personal items (toiletries, letters, paper goods, etc) did you carry with you in the field?

I thank everyone for their time, and I hope to hear from many of you soon. Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions. Thank you.

Wm.T. Ripley

my name is dean lounsbery. i joined for my father raymond lounsbery who past away in 1991. he was in combat from may 44 until wounded in march 45. he was a tank machanic/ driver. have tryed to get infomation on his units action but have found that most every thing was burned in a fire in st louis in the 60’s or 70’s. would appreciate in info i can find

There are two archives I am aware of that have material available for research. One is located at the University of Illinois. The other is at the Carlisle Army Barracks in PA. There are several books you could read. Spearhead in the West, Spearheading with the 3d Armored Division and Call me Spearhead are all 3d Armored Division publications that you can find on ebay. There is also a book written by Bentin Cooper called "Death Traps" that is written about CCB of the 3d Armored Division. Your Dads regiment was part of CCB.

I also attended the Reunion mentioned below by Pat Guffy and Chuck Bolliger (met them both(; this was my 2nd trip. I was not there at the same time as the bulk of the folks, but feel as though we are kindred spirits. We did the same things, saw the same sights, and worried about the same thing……an attack through Fulda Gap.

I had a great time again, sharing some time with these fine folks. I recommend that the 3AD website talk to some of these people; it can be a win-win situation for all.

My check is forthcoming very soon, and I am very interested in the Association’s efforts to bring current AND former 3rd AD members into the fold. The reunion we speak of was a blast! My hat goes off to Johnny Hudson for another huge success. He is DEDICATED!

I was stationed in Gelnhausen from 1969 to 1972. While there I was with Headquarters Company as a Medic. I eventually ran the day room for about a year and then with about a year left, I was the CO’s driver which lead many convoys out to the field. I drove for Captain Clark. I left around the same time he did. I have many memories of that period. I was 17 years old when I arrived in Europe.

I want to let everyone know that I just returned home (Portland, OR) from a fantastic 4 day 3rd AD reunion in Nashville, TN. Appx 130, including wives, from primarily Gelnhausen attended and had a ball. The 33rd Armor, 48th Infantry and 6th Field Artillery were represented. We even had some engineers from Hanau present. I assume the "official" association is aware of this fantastic group of guys. This was my first year, and I won’t miss the next one for anything.

"HOOAH"!!!!!! The 3AD store is now on line. Now I can start collecting things from the "Best mother^%&*n’" armored division to roll across the burning sands of Iraq leaving "death and destruction" in it’s wake. Feel proud, we went, we saw and we kicked their asses. We were so good, we had to be disbanded. Forever will the 3AD live on. You can take the kid outta the cav…….but you can’t take the cav outta the kid. Custer, we love ya babe. Hooah one more time.

I am still looking for the guys I was stationed with at Ray barracks 87-89. Iknow none of you partied harder than this medic did. I have found a couple of you. I would love to see old photos of Friedberg, Ray Barracks or Grafenwoehr. Does anyone remember the studio, Joes Fantasy bar, The billiards cafe, the regina bar? I guess you can tell how I spent my time in Germany. Would be nice to hear about the desert storm mission from guys in my unit. I left right before. What was it like to head out the main gate and know it wasn’t to go to graf, hohenfels .

Fantastic site – a great trip down memory lane. I served on the Rock in 2/36 Inf. from 4/79 to 8/82 (I was a rifle platoon leader in B Co. and later in C Co., XO in C Co., then support platoon leader and, finally, Bn. S-1). (Geeez – it looks like I couldn’t hold down a job for more than a few months!) My wife, Ann, was a teller at the Amex bank on post. We lived in the Roman Way housing area in nearby Butzbach. I loved the times in the field (especially REFORGERs) and being among the troops. The senior officers and NCOs were all Vietnam vets, and it was a real privilege to work alongside them. They were (and remain) my heroes. I remember especially CSM George Horvath, First Sergeant (later CSM) Patrick Snead and LTC Julius Johnson – each of them hard core soldiers, to the bone. After being away for 18 years, I’m returning to Deutschland in August with family for the Passion Play. Looking forward to … the beer. Thanks for the great site. Keep up the good work!

I have spread the word about this site to everybody I know that served in the 3AD anytime, telling them of the possibility of finding an old friend. Clifford Strawser and I served together at "The ROCK" (see his entry a ways below, 5/25/00). I told him about this, and he has popped up here. Hope this fires up some of our other friends from that time to do the same. We thought for over 35 years that ol’ Shakey was departed from us, and one evening last year I get this call from him. Coulda knocked me over with a pinfeather!! One call led to another, plans were laid, and last April my wife and I flew down to see the Strawsers. This was one of the BEST trips we ever made. I encourage everybody to get on board with this site (I will be very soon) and just possibly you might be rewarded like I was. Thank you again for this fantastic site!!

I am searching for mr.Jack/Joe/John Cohen. He served the US Army during world war 2. I do have a picture of him made on the 8 of sept.1944 in Ougree (near Liege) Belgium. After that his unit was for some time around Moresnet Belgium before they move on to Germany. I know I do have little information but if you can help me please contact me.

While searching the net for 2/32 Armor 3rd AD info. I located your site just to find that it has a lot of information on our alumni division. I would like to say stand strong to all veterans, especially 3AD. I just got around to building my Tanker web-site long time waiting. Still working out the bugs and typo. I would like to send out my respect to all of our US Veterans, Active duty soldiers, and Reserve soldier for Memorial Day. Stand Fast!!!!

During Vietnam, serving in this unit was a time of low morale and lower self-esteem. We were considered on a "vacation" tour, even though we spent weeks and months in the field and always stayed ready. Coming home, we were dissed from all sides. Three years of my life for my country has never been recognized.

I’d like to hear from anyone who served in the Frankfurt headquarters on Hamburger Landstrasse from 1966 to 1969. I made a lot of friends and remember much.

A friend of mine told me about this page today so I had to check it out. I’ve always wondered if there was a 3AD Association. I’m glad there is. It troubles me however that I don’t see any MP’s listed in the guest book. I was on Drake Kaserne in Frankfurt 89-91 with 5th Platoon, 503d MP CO. Also was in Safwan for 6 weeks as Security NCOIC, or so the Provost Marshal called me. To my old friends: It was a helluva time wasn’t it? Hope to hear from you.

Just signing in to check out the guestbook. Have been monitoring the "Hardchargers" web-site of the 1/30th FA & 1st Cav regiment for my brother until he gets on-line and one of my old roommates from Drake Edwards, John Zucco, contacted me (28 yrs later). It was great to hear from him as my two years with the "third herd" in Frankfurt, FRG are among my fondest memories from my 11 year stint in the US Army. Are there any other A Co., 143rd Signal vets out there who served from 69-71??? A lot of fine young men (old ones to) served in that unit during the VN-Era.

I didn’t serve, but my Dad was a MSgt at Ray Barracks. My Mother and I were there also. I look back fondly on those years, except for the time when President Kennedy was killed. I feel sorry for the young girl(Vanessa). Both of my younger brothers now serve. My son will be leaving Fort Hood this week and will be stationed in Wiesbaden. I’m looking forward to visiting him and his wife in the next year or so. I’m very proud of my son and hope he does the army proud.

Hated being there at the time, but look back with many fond memories now. I think back to the short time that I spent there and now appreciate the memories of the experiences I had while driving my 5 ton wrecker all over the country looking for one of our drivers broken down in Graf (bad), or sometimes at some map co-ordinate (worse), or while along the way to a recovery to help someone from a different unit broken down on the autobahn (great). Many times I wonder what happened to some of my buddies that I never bothered to keep in touch with after I returned to the land of the round doorknobs. I’m glad that the time I spent with B Company, 503d S&T BN has allowed me to "spin some yarns" around the campfire on a camping trip or two. All this and more has allowed me to appreciate now what I didn’t, or couldn’t, at the time. But then again, maybe I’m just looking to regain my youth of 26 years ago. Yeah, nothing like those long monotonous drives to Graffenwoer, or trying to move my wrecker the next morning; only to discover that the damn thing is frozen solidly to what was mud the previous night; or steam cleaning the entire shop in preperation for a Battalion inspection and discover the painted calvary/stable scenes on the walls under the whitewash. Naw, I think I just want to say thanks to my buddies in the B Co. barracks that gave me the opprotunity to see some of Germany while Gary Dyer or myself were on our way to recover a broken down deuce and a half, that you’d never see if you were just a tourist. Maybe someone who was stationed there with me might read this and, if nothing else, get a chuckle or two out of it.

I served as a medic 86-89. Left just before the gulf conflict. Always wondered what happened to my buddies over there. 2/27 changed to 2/82 while I was there so it is kind of difficult to find info on your site. I participated in the Nijmegan international march in Holland in 89 and so did the 1/36 infantry. We were one of the first artillery battalions to participate and we did quite well. The members of that team received army achievement medals for our efforts. While it is not a war time achievement it is still the highlight of my army service and one of the hardest events that any soldier anywhere could hope to complete. The event was a race over 120 kilometers in 4 days in full battle rattle while calling cadence and a guid-on. The commanders were a lt. John Holley and a Capt. Higgens

Served in HHC 1/32 (5 years after Elvis) from Jul 65 to Dec 66 as company clerk, made Sgt. and went to Alpha company as Tank Commander until June 67. We had the M-60A1’s, M114 scout tracks, and M113’s. Still had M-14 rifles, grease guns, .45’s. Commander of HHC was Lt. Jacobsen, 1st Sgt. Martin (nickname "Thor"). Remember tanker boots, tanker jackets (banned for awhile), flip-top beer, Bad Nauheim bars? Kaiserstrasse in Frankfurt? Alerts at 0300 hours, just when you get back to the barracks drunk on your ass? Amsterdam? Ration cards? Have a few pics for anybody interested.

I found the following information at the Army Center for Military History concerning 1/48 IN. I also have a written copy of the ceremony from when the Belgian Fourragere was presented to 1/48 IN in 1987 when LtCol John Everson was the BN CO…….it is very interested reading! It is a pretty lengthy document so maybe the webmaster here would want me to mail them a copy and they could post it in the history section. Have a "Dragoon" kind of day folks!

Webmaster note:  the information that Mr. Sinnard provided has been incorporated into the lineage section of the 3AD Museum website at www.3ad.net, and thus removed from the guestbook.  To see 1-48 Infantry lineage info, go to the 3ad.net website and follow the links to "Unit Lineages".

I was assigned to A/2-32 Armor in June, 1980 after being diverted from my original assignment with the 2-64 Armor in Schweinfurt. I guess you could say that I was a "Career" 32d Armor Tanker, since I had just left Company C, 6-32 Armor with the 4th Infantry Division in Fort Carson, Colorado. I am particularly proud to have been a member of these units. I often think of the days I spent with both units, and I am more than willing to tell my "War stories" to my kids, their friends and anyone who is interested. I loved the Army, and if I hadn’t gotten injured in 1981, I would still be there!!

I must say seeing the comments made by Vanessa Luna sure made my day (not) I would suggest that if she wants some information for her report,a good place to look would be Arlington Cemetery or The wall at the mall in Washington, Plenty of Information there. The cost of freedom is high. But then again why should she there’s nothing in it for her.Sure brings back echos of another lady of another age,her name was JANE FONDA.:O(

I’ve been dying to get back to "The ROCK" to check it out. I talked to someone a few years ago that was with the Third Avaition about the same time I was over there and he said it’s all overgrown with weeds and tall grass. I guess its been abandoned. I had the time of my life over there, but it was still good to get back to the "World." My son was baptized in the post chapel in February, 1980. He was born in Frankfurt at the 97th General Hospital.

Just a copy of what I sent to Vanessa…

Vanessa,

I just wanted to drop you a message to explain a thing or two to you. I am a 33 year old US Army, Desert Storm Veteran. Last week when you left your message on our bulletin board, you spent some time talking about how stupid your report is, and how stupid your teacher is. Your message came across to many of us veterans that you believe our service and our sacrifice is stupid as well. I can only hope and pray that this is not the truth.

I knew two people who died in the war. Without going into graphic detail, suffice to say that how they died was not pleasant.

I know nothing about you; I don’t know how old you are, or where you are from, but I DO know this: From the moment our plane touched down in Saudi Arabia on December 24, 1990, (that’s right I flew to a war the day before Christmas, I wasn’t with my children or my parents) my life has never been quite the same. Some nights, I wake-up having dreams about battle and the men who died. Loud noises still make me jump sometimes (almost 10 years later!). Not many days go by that I don’t remember the men who died in that desert. I am a grown man Vanessa, but I still feel sad…for them, their families, and for people like you.

I am raising two children by myself, my daughter is 10, and my son is 12. I hope and pray that my children will never have to see a war. My prayer is that you will never have to see a war either Vanessa, but if you do, I also pray that people show more respect, compassion and thanks for your service than you have just shown us. This great country once made the mistake of not thanking it’s warriors when they came home. It will not happen again as long as I breathe.

God bless you young lady. I hope someday you’ll understand why people were upset by your words. I also hope that you don’t have to go to war to learn your lesson. It might be a wonderful thing for you to go back to the guestbook at www.3ad.org and offer an apology to all the veterans whos sacrifices helped protect your right to complain about stupid teachers!

A Disappointed Veteran

Hope all you 2nd Bde folks are doing well… And the rest of you Spearheaders too!

Guestbook Managers Note: Excellent statement, Sir.

Does anyone remember the new sign at bn HQ in early 72, I’m the guy that designed it and painted it, BANDITS, BN CREST, CROSSED SABERS, an all. S-3 jeep driver we called Goober Pool, Stole the plywood for it from the remodleing job they were doing at HQHC in Graf. I did the sign at the request of lt.col James G. Hattersly, originaly to be used on range 80, but afterwards replaced the one at bn.HQ. Pool was from indianapolis, In. Where he got the nic name GOOBER I don’t know. Would like to find him though. He drove jeep for cpt.Shugart, We used to call him (cpt.burp-n-fart). Does anyone remember lt2 Lebrie, co.C ? I remember the day he arived, fresh out of OCS, and we headed for the field the next day. That poor guy realy caught hell from C.O. cpt Sutton, a big redhead that played football for Ohio State before his army thing. I would like to find cpt.Olive, "A"co. C.O., I did the painting of the Cavilaryman on horse back that hung in the day room of co "A", at cpt. Olive’s request, (after he caught me doing a sketch of his wife from a picture of her on his desk, in the middle of the night, while I was on CQ duty,in his office, at his desk) There are so many memorys, and so many people, thanks for bringing back the good times.Anyone that was there in that time span, please e-mail me. Would love to hear from all of you.

THIS WAS A DARN GOOD WEB SITE WHEN I FIRST VISITED, AND THANKS TO THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT, IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER. WHAT’S UP WITH THE 23RD ENGINEERS?? YOU’D THINK AT LEAST A FEW OF THEM "SAPPERS" WOULD BE COMPUTER LITERATE. HECK, ITS NOT MUCH HARDER THAN FIGURING HOW MUCH COMPOSITION "B" IT TAKES TO BLOW A BRIDGE. I’D REALLY LIKE TO GET BACK TO DEUTSCHLAND FOR A VISIT & CHECK OUT THE PLACES THAT WE DREADED THEN. I HAVE A GERMAN BUDDY WHO KEEPS ME UP TO DATE. AFTER 8 YEARS STRAIGHT IN GERMANY I SURE MISS IT(FUNNY HOW WE FORGET THE BAD TIMES). IF YOU EVER WERE IA "SPEARHEAD" SOLDIER, YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF & THOSE WHO SERVED WITH YOU TO JOIN THE ASSOCIATION!! TSCHUSS UND AUFWIEDER-BYE-BYE

I received a leter in the mail from Dr. Sara Sale at Missouri Southern State College. She is looking for veterans of WWII who have special first-hand memories of Betty Grable’s WWII movies, her USO performances. If you think you have something that could be used in a definitive historical study about the late actress, and pin-up girl, contact Dr. Sara Sale, PO Box 2188, Joplin, MO 64803; fax: 417-782-7882; or Sale_S@mail.mssc.edu Thanks for you help.

In reference to the comments posted by Vanessa Luna, her Bolt.com member ID is actually LATNEM_99 in case anyone was wanting to respond directly. The member ID "latnem" is a different user [male].

Webmasters Note: Keep it clean and professional people if you do. We don’t want to do anything that would be an embarrassment to the rest of the veterans and families of the Division.

I would like to respond to Ms. Luna’s comments myself. Being a Desert Storm veteran and losing two close friends to friendly fire, reading her comments really p#$%^& me off. It’s truely sad to know that people, especially our younger generation don’t respect our men and women in uniform. But when the enemy’s knockin’ on our door, who do they call…… the army, navy, air force and marines. I could get really ugly due to her flamatory comments but that would be a waste of energy I could use for something constructive. I just hope she failed that class.

Well, her I am again. The youge lady who entered our web site looking for help with a school assignment, is like all young people of this present era. Lost, confused and rebelous, just watch a program like Jerry Springer(I am not endorsing Springer) and see what the youth of American and I must say the youth in other countries are presenting them selves as to the public. A real shame..but, there is hope and it it is with the guidance of the members of this organization, that we, when face with a reaction , as we have seen, sit back and think, especially to the days of Kent State( they were confused also)and try to guide these poor misgiven persons in the right track. I’m sorry that this youth didn’t find the web site useful, but, she didn’t dig deep enough to find the story.Hopefully, she will see the error of her ways…

In response to the sick comments by Vanessa Luna in the guestbook, I totally agree with the webmaster’s reaction. What a great disservice to the veteran’s of the division and the other branches of the services who served to protect the right that she now chooses to exercise. At a time as this, I wish there was a reinstatement of the draft for people like Ms. Luna. If she was in my basic training company when I was in the service, the drill sergeants(Vietnam combat veterans) in my company would have her for dinner, she’d be one sorry son of bitch if they found out her views. Ms. Luna if you’re reading this, you don’t realize how hurtful your idiotic comments were.

I am visiting this site researching the division my father, Ret. Lt. Col. John R. Ferguson Jr served in from 1942 -1945.

He was a Major in the Supply Batt.

I was hoping that someone may see this and remember my father and send me an email of their memories. John passed away on May 30, 1997. I miss him lots. Thanks in advance. Calee (Ferguson)Travis texsfilly@aol.com

Hey look, I read that little note…It’s sad.God help our children. You know I’m not Mr. gung ho or anything but times have changed brothers.I may have had the same attitude at one time in my life, a little encouragment goes a long way.At any rate,I’m sending my membership fee in tomorrow, I hope this site does not let me down…Although I don’t really expect to much from it, but I do believe it could be a very good investment if only to vent a little. Listen, I didn’t serve in the Army or whatever you are talking about, I’m probly not even old enough to serve in the army, unless you changed the law by a ton, but anyway, all I did was come to this website to see if there was anything on desert storm for my stupid report that I have to do in a stupid teachers class, but thanks for wasting my time and I hope I never come here again.

Webmasters Note: Its a shame you have such an attitude or you would have found more help and information that you could have ever used. There is a wealth of information available about Desert Storm from the people here. But since we are such a waste of your time, you will never know that, will you. Some day, maybe you will have to give up 3 years or more of your life in a dangerous situation in a foreign country so that you can come back home and be treated the way you have treated us. I guess that’s the only way your ever going to understand how offensive and hurtful your your remarks are to people who laid their lives down for you so that you could have the freedom you have and don’t appreciate. But people usually don’t appreciate what they have until they lose it.

Must admit that three years passed in a blur of alcohol and hash, but I truly miss the guys I served with and wonder what has become of them. A few I contacted in 1970 or so, but not since, and here it is 30 years later. Have you all been ravaged? Stickney, Frenchie, M. Moore, Buster, Terrance Patrick O’Brien, Condor, Roger Cooley, Mike Hammond, Reed Carlson, and all you others. I expect the Colonels, Sergeants-Major, 1st Sergeants, and other lifers have passed on (characters all, some great others too foul to recall, but Fred J. Royce, you bastard, I hope you met a suitable end). Would be pleased to hear from any Iron Brigade crazies – might even convince me to give money to this org.

I was stationed at Coleman Kaserne in Gelnhausen from March 1976-September 1978. Headquarters, right next to to CSC, was my company. I had the time of my life in Gelnhausen as well as many other cities in Germany. I ran on the Gelnhausen Track club, the German team. I was a highjumper. I would like to hear from the guys that I was stationed with. Some names: Mark Rockers, Danny Cyr, Ricky German, Ed the Head, Jimmy Lossen, Jay Guerrero, Michael McCoy, "Shorty", Logan, Kelty, etc. Remember " White On "? and "Whiten Up"? Hear from you soon.

Happy to find this site. Was a pharmacist for 1 year when drafted. At Fort Knox my basic taining was cut short in order to start processing troops for the rotation to Germany. Look for "Army Pictures" on my web site.

Feel lucky to have been able to serve in Germany instead of Korea.

I was a oh-58 and Uh-1 helicopter pilot with the Division from 1977 to 1981. I was a young kid out of flight school on my first assignment. I grew up in the division in Germany. I had some of the best times of my life on REFORGER. I flew the Division Commander, MG Ulmer, as my primary assignment. I decided to make the army my profession and retired three years ago. I have a request on behalf of a young soldier. I am attempting to find SFC Ralph Henry Tuner(ret.) for his son. SFC Turner was with the 3rd AD during Desert Storm. He deployed from Germany with the Division. Upon returning to Germany he retired and we think he is residing in the US. If anyone knows of him is son Ralph is trying to find him. You may contact me at cvsmith@surfsouth.com Thanks

I have a lot of fond memories of members and bitter memories of some commanders. But all memories of my unit are warm and wistful. Some of the best years of my life. I spent 44 months on the rock with some of the best friends I ever had. PSG Montour was a hero. Where are Pickett, Jones, Hickman, and Bohannon? Earl Firestone? Lt. Cassell. SSG Rivas defected after 1977 and went to the Tigers. C’mon former Pickles, write me. Don’t let our Tiger buddies chow is down!!

We were a close-knit unit and this reunion, although small in size compared to others, has been a success. We eagerly look forward to the next one in Asheville, NC this coming Sept. 2000. We have managed to contact nearly all those who served during the period 1955-1957. We have pictures, movies, and other memorabilia from Coleman Kaserne, maneuvers, groups, etc. other than those in the 3AD yearbook. Those of us on the reunion committee would be willing to correspond with others if desired. The 29th Armored Inf. Batt. was redesignated as the 2nd Armored Rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry on 1 Oct 57 after a lot of us draftees had returned to the US. Gen. Colin Powell began his military career in the 2/48.

Hello. Do you have the Desert Storm unit narrative for 4-7 Cav (3AD’s Divisional Cavalry)? After Desert Storm, the squadron published this wonderful and interesting book. I may have a copy if you would like to look at it.

Having served 31 months with the 3rd,Iv’e always felt part of it. This association validates that feeling. I hope more cold war vets become aware of this. I’m sure many more feel as I do. We trained hard and the threat was always there, especially when the wall went up. God Bless All.

I noticed that like most people/sites you are lacking in 2nd Brigade Info. I served during the cold war and Desert Storm for 2nd BDE. I have a copy of the BDE history during Storm. It was written by my friends in S-2. I was a new E-1 when I got to 3AD. I was in Germany (Graf of Horns) when the wall came down. I know that there are very few copies of this history around, 5 that I know of. One to Col. Higgens, one to 3AD museum, one each to my intell buddies that wrote it, and mine. The benifits of friends. I would like to add this information to your files. I do not know of the security requirements of the history, I will have to get the doc. and review it, before sending any specific info. I was also at Gen. Funks retirement ceremony and have a copy of the ceremony. At which 3AD was given 2 unit citations. I do not have the orders, nor does anyone I know. I have been looking for the general orders, but have not found them. I left the Army in jan 99. I am currently doing Guard time. Which is why I am concerned about security.

Originally with 3rd Infantry out of basic (Ft.Knox), upon arrival to Franffurt my dream came true. I along with other "cruits" were snagged at the airport put on a bus and told we were now with the 3rd Armored Division. The word was get anything but the "Rock". I was the first to volunteer for it. My reason for the madness. My brother served with 2/33 on the "Rock" from 1966-1969. As a child I often looked at that 3rd Armored Patch. Now it was a part of me, along with memories of the "Rock". Alpha company changed from Avengers to "Alpha Dogs". Either case we were "Outlaws" !!!

Webmasters Note: The Association and the Museum and Archives are in the process of separating into two separate organizations. When this is complete April 14th, there will be a new board of directors. Membership cards, Certificates, and Reunions are 3 items that the new board feels they need to work on right away. However, they are interested in hearing from the membership on what you feel the priorities need to be. Please send your comments to directors@3ad.org
