Fort Knox May-Sep 1968, Ray Barracks Sep 68-May 70 -I served under LTC Forbes, COL Drake and Col Tibbets.I was a platoon leader and club officer/custodian for the O-club, NCO-club and EM-club with the Elvis Presley stage{though he never performed there}.I visited Ray Barracks this past September, thirty years to day that I originally reported. It was a great tour in the 60s and a trip down memory lane this past September. The EM-club is now a bowling alley, the NCO -club is used by all and the O-club is used infrequenty for special events. The area used by the 1/32 is vacant as many new buildings have been constructed past the old bowling alley and tank parks. It seems Ray Barracks has a future unlike many of posts that existed in the 60s. I would enjoy an e-mail from those who were statined at Ray Barracks. Bill Hanson

I was stationed at the "ROCK" from 1977-79 and am interested in finding anyone that worked in the motor pool as a TI inspector under Chief Welch or Chief Shafer during that time, also drove the wrecker.  I see that CPT Harman Woods is posted here but he didnt have an e mail address,,,if you know it, e mail it to me…I drove the half-track that sat in front of hq for the years I was there, painted it with my buddy Mike Banko(where are you?) and put a new engine in it,,,took out the old flathead, put in a 318 dodge from the pov dump..I was in the spearhead newspaper for a couple of those races in 77 and 78…The opening picture of the Rock is one that I submitted to Brian Hatheway last september, I have more to send ,,hard to find the time to scan, etc….Anyone serving on the rock from '77-'79 , e-mail me.  My nickname was just plain old "Schlar"…  Go Rangers,,,,CPT Woods, e-mail me!!!!

From May 1966 to August 1968, I was assigned to the 503d Admin. Co. 3AD at the Drake Kaserne in Frankfurt. I was a Personnel Management Specialist working in the Pro-Pay Section. If I remember right during my stay at Drake Kaserne, we also had the 503d MP Co. and HHC, 3AD. When was the 503d Admin. Co. done away with? I'd like to hear from anyone that was stationed with me. I've contacted about 5 of my old friends that were there with me within the last few years.

I served from 1955- 1957. Was among the first to be assigned to the 3rd Armored in 1955 when it was converted from a training to a tactical division. Was in the first attachment that was sent to Germany as part of Operation Gyroscope to replace the 4th ID at "The Rock", Ayers Kaserne, Kirshgoens. Was able to visit it this past summer after 41 years. It was sad to see it deserted with locks and chains on the gates. Have many fond momeries of the place.

First assignment was in D Co, 23 AEB, Hanau, from Jan 1957 to Dec 1958. I was the 3rd Plt Ldr with 1SG Larry Shuart as my Plt Sgt. He taught me how to be an officer. Super great times in the best unit I ever served in for 20 years. I'm in contact with Larry, Sam Kem, Don Meeker, Ernie Ruffner. Would love to hear from anyone who served in those times.

SUPPLEMENT: In my last 2 comment efforts I failed to mention my period of service; I was at "the Rock" from December 1961 to July 1964. This time included trips to the ever-wonderful Grafenwohr and Hohenfels. We were controllers for the 3rd AD's annual TCQC (tank crew qualification) in the summertime at Graf. The tour was a great experience! It made some changes in me . .for the better, I think.

I mentioned a MAJ Thrasher before; he was a VERY positive force in my life, and at a time when I needed it most. When I returned from emergency leave (my mother had passed away) in '63, he helped me in a way that I have wanted to thank him for. He sent me to the NCO Academy at KG in an effort to get my mind off of the loss; it worked! Wherever you are out there, Mr. Thrasher….. God bless ya!

Came to Friedberg in May 1987 and stayed here until I retired in 93. Currently work as the Simulation Center Manager here at Ray Barracks and for those of you who remember it the place wasn't much then and is far worse now. It's like Elvis left and said "Don't change a thing ya'll I'll be right back". In anycase anybody visiting here feel free to stop in for coffee and a chat.

I joined the 2d polatoon of C Company, 13th Armored Inf. Bn.(Honor and Pride), part of Combat Command A, right out of high school in 1955. After basic and advanced training wew were the first to arrive in Germany in early (Feb) 1956. We were stationed in Ayers Kaserne outside of Kirch Göns, Germany, aka "the Rock" We were later disignated the 2d Armored Rifle Bn. 46th Inf. Although I spent 22+ years in the Army, these were the best years of my life. Charlie Company 13th AIB had a reunion last summer at Fort Knox, Ky. where it all started. We still all had a great time after 40 some years. A great percentage of the men I served with in the 23th went on to make the Army a career. The unit must have given us something. it's good to see this interest in the 3d AD.

Prior to assignment to HHC 1st BDE I was with C/2/32; later transferred to HHC, 2/32, as a radioteletype operator. From there on to 1st BDE HHC; I was with BDE S-4 as a RTT specialist. My Section Commander at that time was a Major Thrasher. Does anyone know of his whereabouts? I owe that gentleman a HEARTY HANDSHAKE! In '91 my wife and I went to Germany on vacation. I visited Ayers Kaserne and was amazed at all the memories that came back.

"FOR MUSTANGS SETTING THE PACE" D COMPANY, 4TH BN, 8TH US CAV, 2DBE, 3AD.

I served many roles while stationed in Gelnhausen. I was a M1-A1 driver, loader, gunner, company clerk, commanders driver, and friend to all of those that I have come in contact with. I will never as long as I live forget those brave men in my unit. We went days, weeks without showers, ate food with bugs in it, listen to our walkmans and BBC on the short wave. The nights were cold and clear. The stars were at your finger tips. Watching the air sorties at night on the onset of the war and wondering, am I going to make it through this? am I strong enough to face what ever happens? the answers in the end were yes. We came home late at night long after the parades and cheers have gone by months earlier. We came home as proud Third Armored Division combat patch wearing, been there done that, tasted battle, kicked some Iraqi ass proffessional soldiers. Thank you to all of my commerade's in arms, I miss you all very much. Please, if you recognize and or remember me, please contact me. Thank you and God bless. SPC-4 WATSON, MICHAEL D. I am really excited to see that someone has a site devoted to the 3AD. I went to Kirschgoens in September of 1960 to (at that time, the 2dMTB 13th Cav. In1962? we became the 2nd MTB 32d Armor.) Does anyone remember the 13th? In 1962? our colors rotated back to the states. That sucked! We were the proudest of the proud.   I was a gunner on Col. Moore's tank. He was reduced to Sgt.Maj. when the unit designation changed.  I'm looking forward to hearing from men I served with during those "nerve wracking years".  Would like to hear from anyone who served in KG at that time…PACHILLO, YOU OUT THERE?….  I've looked all over for some info on the 13th and so far there's nothing.

in Freidberg 85-86( D-1/32 AR) and Gelnhausen 86-87. (CAT co, TOP GUN!)

Since some are confused, 1-32 AR was redesignated 4-67 in 86 and 3/33 AR was redesignated 4-8 CAV in 86. The only effect of change was switching out vehicle bumper numbers.

Served with the Spearheaders from activation in June 1955 in Fort Knox and on to Germany at Coleman Kaserne in Gelnhausen until 1958. Good time to have been in active service and had many, many good times in Europe. Been back a few years ago and all the watering holes and the nite life was gone, mostly because we got 4 marks for a buck and now its about 1½ for a buck

I was assigned as 2d PL, A/2-36 Inf from Mar 79-Apr 80. After this time, I became the XO for A Co for 10 months followed by assignment as the S-1. I had a great time during this period. It was a great Bn in a great Bde in a great Division.

I had the opportunity to meet some of the WWII Spearheaders in England when they visited for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. I was the US Exchange officer to the British Infantry School in Warminster, and I participated in a service for these heroes in the church at codford St. Mary.

Hello, my name is Neal Hallford. My father Henry Hallford served in the 83rd Reconnaisance Batallion from June '56-May '57 in Budigen, Oberhessen, Germany. Before that, he was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky from August 1955-May 1956. Dad passed away December 20th of '96, but he often spoke fondly of his old friends in 3rd Armored.

If you served with my father, please e-mail me some time at nealiios@aol.com.

Thank you for your service, Neal Hallford

Nice to see that we are not forgotten and that others can find out what we did and where we went from there

I served with the 856 ASA (Army Security Agency) Company in '78-'79 as a Russian Voice Interceptor. The 856th became A company of the 533rd MI Battalion right after I left. We were in Frankfurt-Hoechst (Michael Barracks) across the street from 32d Signal Bn., which I believe was Vth Corps support.

I SERVED WITH THE 122 ARMORED ORDNANCE BATTALION, 3RD ARMORED DIV. 1955-1958. STATIONED AT COLEMAN KASERNE FOR TWO YEARS. ANYBODY KNOW WHATEVER HAPPENED TO CAPTAIN WILLIAM "WEE WILLIE" WISDOM? HE WAS A STERN BUT FAIR CO. LONG LIVE THE SPEARHEADERS AND GEN. GEORGE PATTON.

Webmaster's note:  General George never commanded the 3d Armored Division, nor was the 3d Armored Division part of his 3d Army.  In WWII, the 3d Armored Division served under General Courtney Hodges.
