Commanding General


Major General Chiarelli hails from Seattle, Washington and is a Distinguished Military Graduate of Seattle University. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Armor in September 1972, he has served in Army units in the United States, Germany and Belgium. His education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from Seattle University, a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Washington, and a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategy from Salve Regina University. He is a graduate from the Armor Officer Basic Course; Infantry Advance Courses; Naval Command and General Staff College, and the National War College. He has served in various command and staff positions at the squadron/battalion, brigade, division, Army Staff and at NATO. 
His first assignment in 1973, was with the 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington. There he served as the 3d Squadron (Air), 5th Cavalry Regiment Squadron Support Platoon Leader; Assistant S-2; S-2; Troop Executive Officer and finally, Troop Commander. Following his assignment at Fort Lewis, Washington, attendance at the Infantry Officer Advanced Course and graduate school at the University of Washington, Major General Chiarelli became an Instructor and later Assistant Professor at the United States Military Academy. Upon completion of the Naval Command and Staff College in 1985, he went on to serve as the Operations Officer 3d Battalion, 33d Armor, 3d Armored Division, in Gelnhausen, Germany. In 1987, while serving with the ”Pickles,” later designated 4th Battalion, 8th Cavalry, he was a proud member of the only U.S. Army team ever to win the Canadian Army Trophy for tank gunnery. Major General Chiarelli went on to become the Operations Officer for 2d Brigade, 3d Armored Division. After his assignment in Germany in 1989, he was again assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served as an Operations Officer for I Corps. Subsequently, Major General Chiarelli went on to command the 2d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, at Fort Lewis. Upon completion of the National War College in Washington, D.C., Major General Chiarelli became the G-3 of the 1st Cavalry Division and later the Deputy G-3 and Director for Plans, Training and Mobilization for III Corps. He returned to Fort Lewis, Washington in 1996, and commanded 3d Brigade, 2d Infantry Division. In 1998, he was reassigned to SHAPE, Belgium as the Executive Assistant and later Executive Officer to the Supreme Allied Commander, Commander United States European Command at SHAPE Headquarters, Mons, Belgium. In 2000, he returned to Fort Hood, Texas where he served as the Assistant Division Commander (Support) for the 1st Cavalry Division. Since August 2001, Major General Chiarelli has served as the Director of Operations, Readiness and Mobilization, at Headquarters, Department of the Army
