This page is under construction. We would greatly appreciate any photos
you may have of Armstrong Barracks, home of Divisional Cavalry - DIVCAV...!
This kaserne housed the 3d Armored Division's cavalry squadron throughout the
division's time in Germany. Although the same squadron, DIVCAV served
under three different flags in 3d Armored Division [83d Reconnaissance Battalion
(1956-57),
3-12 Cavalry (1957-89), and 4-7 Cavalry(1989-91)], and continues today to serve with the 1st
Armored Division at Armstrong Barracks as 1-1 Cavalry. As 4-7 Cavalry, the
squadron served in combat during Operation Desert Storm. As 1-1 Cavalry,
the squadron served in Bosnia during the first U.S. rotation there in 1995-96.
Also housed there for many years was the division Air Defense Artillery
Battalion, 3d Battalion, 61st Air Defense Artillery. 3-61 ADA was
reflagged circa 1988 to 3d Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery. The
battalion began inactivation shortly before Desert Storm, but many of its troops
still participated in combat operations with 5th Battalion, 3d Air Defense
Artillery. 5-3 ADA was 8th ID's organic ADA battalion, but deployed for
Desert Storm as 3AD's ADA battalion.
