First_name: Anthony CommentsFirst_name: Joseph CommentsUpdating email address First_name: Kirk CommentsI must say, Jim and Frank's comments did bring back some of those 'not so good' memories about the 'Rock' that I think we all tend to put behind us. When I first got to my unit, I was advised to sleep with a bunk adapter for personal safety in case 'unauthorized' visitors. My room was on the third floor but the fire escapes had been cut off to the second floor and wrapped in barbed wire as to prevent anyone from climbing up. Conversely, it also prevented anyone from getting down in case of fire. Certain areas of Butzbach and Frankfurt were considered 'no go' if you were not of the correct hue. When one went to the movies (on the 'Rock') it was always advisable to take no 'shortcuts' through other units domains, but, to use the main streets only. For me these were some of the realities of life in the Army and life on the 'Rock', that being said, I have never since worked with a more diverse and outstanding group of individuals. We archived the best Artep score for a scout platoon in the division in 1976 and got to wear the 'distinguished' flash above our scout platoon pocket patches. I am still in contact with many of the guys from those days and now that we all are 50+, I am sure we look back to those days as the best in our lives... Scouts out! With NCO's from the WWII not much foolishness was tolerated and the odd dude that became a problem was on a fast truck out of there and the Army or a stay in Leavenworth, KS. Terrible the lack of pride in yourself and your unit that came along later. First_name: Carl CommentsI read the remarks from Jim Woodrum and Frank Verea with great interest as I do to all posts pertaining to the times I spent with the 3d Armored Division. I must say both individuals have valid points. I know because I was stationed in both places during the times both refered too. I was assigned to A Co 1st Bn 32 Armor from 1964 until 1967 and with B Co 2nd Bn 33d Armor from 1975 until 1978. It really was the unit you were serving with and the caliber of Officers and NCO's in the unit. Drug use and racial tensions were also a factor, and even the US Army itself. I had been stationed with 1st Bn 32 Armor in 1964 until 1967 and this was an excellent unit until the Vietnam war began draining the unit it's senior NCO's. Then things started to deteriorate. When I returned in 1971, 1st Bn 32d Armor was a totally different unit from the one I had left just a few short years earlier. The Army had went to the all volunteer army and Vietnam had taken its toll on both personnel and equipment. Alcohol was allowed in the barracks and I even seen wide spread use of hash and marijuana. This sudden change in Army policy created problems leadership didn't know how to handle. The first question I was ask when I got to the barracks was not, what's your name. Instead, are you a juicer or a head? One night a couple of soldiers from my platoon took the M73 Machine Gun from one of our tanks, a pair of asbestos mittens and ammo, went to Friedberg and began chasing and firing at a German National thru the streets because of a drug deal that had gone bad. Drug use was a big part of the problem. One night while I was on CP duty in Friedberg there was a riot down Combat Alley and a couple of soldiers were injured. I myself was struck in the head with a beer bottle. I had survived Vietnam and thought I might die down Combat Alley. I was glad to leave Friedberg in 1973. i returned to germany in 1975 and was assigned to 2nd Bn 33d Armor, The Rock, and was wondering what I would be in for this time. I couldn't believe the difference in units. The leadership was much better, granted Vietnam had ended, but the transformation was totlly unexpected. I did hear some stories from soldiers who had been there in the early 1970's about how bad things had been. I believe it was the leadership in the unit that made the difference. First_name: steve CommentsWell, I'm one of those Vol Army enlistee's and I went in to take care of my duty to my country and to earn my GED. Now at the age of 17 I was already a bit rebellous and yea I smoked pot, now with that said I did my 8 wks of basic, 7 wks of AIT on the M-60 tank, and then another 6 wks on the MIA1 Sheraton, than it was off to Germany and the Rock. The Rock was a altogether different type of place when I arrived in Feb of 73. There was a difinite feeling of racial tension between different races (a word I don't like using) which was from prior incidents that occured in the summer of 72, which was explained to us new cruits by our Plt Sgt's, who were Nam vet's and yea they did drink, but I think what they went through over in Nam probably had something to do with that behavior. As for myself yea I partied and such as did most of the soldiers I knew, but when it came to doing our job we kicked ass at Graf and Hornsfels, and alerts and such. We took pride in our job on our tank, but we were also a rowdy group who were described by our BN Commander as a bunch of the Animals, we applauded...lol. Now in retrospect after all these years would I have done it differently, hell yes, but I can't change the past and I'm not ashamed of my service. We were the main deterent for protecting western europe and we all knew if the shit did hit the fan it wouldn't be a conventional war for very long. Well I've babbled long enough, no disrepect intended to the previous posters Frank and Jim, just another view from a fellow soldier who served. First_name: Frank CommentsI see so many names from this Div past, but it appears the time frame of the early 70s is missing a big part of those who were there. I was at The Rock, when the big ugly piece of rock was painted and placed down the road for Pres. Ford's visit. I arrived just months after the riots on post. It was also the transition from the draft Army to the all Vol Army. Now that was painful, we got so many who didn't understand their weapons or the basics of being a soldier. A lot of the NCO's from Nam were drunks, many of those drafted were nothing more than druggies. It took a couple of years but by 1976 we were seeing a higher grade of soldiers. Officers from Nam had there act together, but the 90 day wonders that were now moving in couldn't find a place on the map, on my last Scout test we attacked the wrong hill, we were off by 5k from were we should have been. Our Company CO was nothing more than a kid himself, the previous CO was somebody I respected, Capt Healy or Cup Cake as we fondly called him. My first PLT Leader was a decent man and good officer LT. Blount, Same for our PLT SGT, SFC Henderson very good man, the next one lived in a bottle with his buddie a SSG in our PLT. Not looking to offend, but it takes some time to see things the way they were really were. I enjoyed my time in Germany, made some good friends, but there was a dark side that it appears many forget. I did 4 Grafs, 3 Hornfels, 2 WildFlicken, 1 Messiou, Bad Tolz, and so many alerts I lost count. From the time I stepped off that plane until wheels up three years later it was quite an experience. Mind you not all were fond memories, but overall I enjoyed the country and people of Germany. The time was the early to mid 70s. Duty was hard but I enjoyed my time as a Crew Chief on the UH-1 Aircraft. I still remember my aircraft tail numbers and have located some since I departed the Army. I remember 76 and 77 being the warmest summers and best years for German wine. I wish I would have kept a few of those Oppenheimer bottles of Rhine wine. I also wish I kept some of Rommels liquor stash that was being sold in the Class VI. There is a lot to reminisce about, and at times I have posted my experiences here. But there was also a lot of my tour I would like to forget like the endless guard and barracks duty, continuous field problems, lousy chow, and barracks life. Even under these conditions I managed to get out of the barracks and see some of Germany. As time moved on I had a tendency to block out those bad times and remember only the good times. Got tons of pictures of the closed bases (except Fliegerhorst and Grossauheim, maybe next year). It is so sad to see everything locked up. I talked to the german guards and they agreed with me. They are talking about putting in an amusement park at Fliegerhorst and luxury condos in Yorkhof though the guard there has his doubts that they can do that because the walls can not be changed due to the age and them being load bearing walls. It broke my heart to see my hometown closed down so to speak. My family moved to Gelnhausen so I go home to visit off and on. I grew up at pretty much all the clubs in Hanau but left in 95. Just got back from Hanau last week. Got lots of pictures of the closed kasernes but didn't get to Fliegerhorst since my family now lives in Gelnhausen but maybe next year I can get pictures of it. I remember my brothers and me riding our bikes home from the movies at night through the fields into Langendiebach (onto the next town Ravolzhausen) especially the night we went to The Fog and it was foggy on the way home. Scared the daylights out of us since my little brother had the only light on his bike. Thanks for listening. If you think you might want some pictures of the bases for your site drop me a line. I did have to give up some of my inventory to aquire this but i do beleive this needs to be back with the family. This sword looks to be in perfect condition except a few minor wear spots. I did not serve in the 3AD, I am a german civilian living in Schluechtern (perhaps someone of you remembers the name)and so I know the area around very well! Schluechtern is in the southern corridor of the Fulda Gap at the end of the valley of the river Kinzig. If someone has any questions, feel free to write me an email, even if my english is not so well. Perhaps I can even make a few pics of places you like to see again? But I am feeling connected with the Units doing their service in our area, especially the 3AD and the 14CAV!!! I was born in Schluechtern in 1978 and so I grew up with all the things you describe from your point of view here on this website and it is really interesting for me to read! When I think back to this time I mostly remember a bunch of little boys in the age of 6 or 7 standing at the Crossing with traffic lights south of Schluechtern, where the tanks have to stop... we always made the V-Sign and asked: Do you have some stickers for me? or Can we have some meal packages please? and it was the greatest thing for us to get some US-Army stuff!!! Sometimes we even had some things to swap when a Jeep or a Hummer was parking at the fire station in Schluechtern. And if you had a can of bacardi-cola it was possible to swap a flashlight! Great! Is till got many things from this time on the attic, inclusive a complete BDU with Spearhead-Patch about which I was very proud. But I also remember that swapping was always very bad when military police was standing beside the road... ;) Thank you to all who gave us a little thing!! At the train station in Schluechtern tanks were often unloaded during REFORGER maneuvers and when they went down the Bahnhofstrasse past our house, everything was shaking and the glasses rattled in the cabinet. Often in the middle of the night. I also remember the sirens of which you talk, the sounds of shots in the night(by the way, they are still in use for fire-alarms), a night when 3 Chinook (we called them Bananenhubschrauber) landed on the meadow directly behind our house unloading fully equipped soldiers and a day when we walked into the forest, suddenly standing directly in front of some artillery howitzer without seeing them because of their good Camouflage... it was a nice time! When we heard the smallest noise of tanks we got on our bicycles to search them... To that time I was in a rifle association in Herolz and the soldiers came to us to make target-shooting with their M16. That was also great. We even got a plastic tank model from the 14CAV as thanks which is still standing in our Schuetzenhaus. I was very sad when the Coleman Kaserne and the Sickels Airfield closed in the 90ies, there was still a lot of traffic on Rhein-Main airbase because of gulf war but it was not the same as in cold war... I even collected some cut outs of the newspaper about the army leaving... For many years I did not think about the cold war Era but now I try to find out as much as possible about my childhood because I myself became father (by the way my wife is from East Germany) and so the memories came back and I realized what was really going on at that time regarded with militarily background. We were so ensureless when we were kids. Today I realize that we lived in a combat zone which had been sacrificed to stop russian tanks... can you imagine the flash of an atomic explosion just when you are playing or sleeping in your own house? Today I am still getting a goose-struck when I think about that. The military plans which they hided from us were really catastrophically. We always asked ourselves if the antitank barriers in every street were to stop russian tanks or the fleeing population... What do you know about the area of Schluechtern? I know the ammo depots deep in the forests very well, especially the one in Alsberg where we used to make techno partys at the end of the 90ies. Today they are used to breed champignons! The Fasching Parades (especially Koblenz!), drinking at "John's" just outside the front gate or a little further up at the Country Inn where they served the 3 liter boots!. . .Traveling in that slow Green Goose for a bus that had the 50 mph governor on it (so we were one big slow obstacles that the Germans had to avoid on the Autobahn), freaking the Germans out when we jumped into the Bumper Cars at their little Folksfests and actually bumped people instead of just traveling around in little circles. Living together on the top floor of the Headquarters building (where the roofs were slanted and your winter icebox was the ledge outside your window) and practicing in that cold converted barn that was the 3rd AD Bandhall. Both depressing and hopeful. All US forces left Hanau earlier this year, so all the Kasernes are sitting locked up and abandoned. The hopeful part is what the Germans have done with Engineer Kaserne and Francois Kaserne on Lamboy Strasse. Impressive. Engineer is apartments and light business. Francios is a school (the old S3 building initially looked like a Kindergarden, which I found ironically fitting). Best part is the Francois guard house - its now a coffee shop!

Was there until May of 1956. Gyroed to Fliegerhorst in 1956,stayed until 1959.---Returned from Korea in 1962 and stayed until 1966 Have met many folks in the intrem 55 thru 75.In Korea,Ft.Lee,Aberdeen,Ft.Meade and two tours in Viet Nam.When i returned to Fligeerhorst in 62,there were 28 people still there upon my return. Part of Big Lift, many weeks at Graf and temporary border duty at Fulda & Hohenfels while those units went to Graf. Got a call yesterday from John Hoaks (Mail Clerk - 3rd sq. 12th Cav) who re-connected me with Tom Whelan (also a Medic in 3-12. I am also in touch with Ron Rubicky who was with the 83rd Artillery at Armstrong at the same time. That was a 7th Army unit and Ron was a dental tech in our dispensary. About 10 years ago I returned and had the good fortune to reconnect with "Willy the Tailor" and his wife who were still sewing, etc., and both in good health. Willy had a shop in the basement of HQ Company Bldg., and it was on his radio that we first heard of Jack Kennedy being shot. First_name: Steve CommentsOn July 4th, 1776, fifty-six men signed a document declaring their views and beliefs on how a people should be governed. Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers & large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." They gave us a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted... We shouldn't.
