Drove for Major William Hartley before he went to Nam. Anyone remember 1st Sgt. Carlos, Sgt. Major ??? (Hawaiian --cursed like a salior), Lt Zola??? First_name: Robert CommentsFifty years ago today, HqHq Co, 122d Armd Ord Bn, as it was designated then, along with other units, shipped out from Brooklyn Army Terminal NY on the USNS GEIGER as part of the historic Operation Gyroscope, (OG). OG was an operation designed to rotate large military units without sacrificing combat readiness in face of an escalating Cold War in Europe, and to get some heavy armor into the Fulda Gap in Germany. I was a personnel administrative specialist, a PFC, then. Along with SGT Kenneth T Uyeda, I was busy immediately putting together courts martial charges against 4 guys who attempted to jump ship in Brooklyn. Their trials, convictions and sentences were documented in USNS GEIGER SCMOs dated 13 May 1956. A couple of years ago, our OG comrade in arms, Reese D Thomas, C, HqA,122d, remarked how he wished the Hungarian Revolution would have been our DESERT STORM. I do, too. We were ready. The day after the uprising in Buedpest, we were on maneuvers in Grafenwohr. By then I was an SP5,E5. I was hustled back to CCA headquarters in Kirch Gons to start processing dependents out of Europe. Even though I was a little anxious abour my untested personal courage in combat, I was downright scared when I had to strap on a parachute and climb into an itty bitty canvas covered two-seated plane for the flight back to Friedberg. In any even, President Eisenhower, perhaps wisely, elected not to take us into war. One of my mentors then, and a personal hero, was SGM Herman E Gundlach, A, HqA. He was a decorated WWII veteran who subsequently became CSM of the 3rd Army, I think. He died 23 Feb 2002, seven months after visiting me in TX. There are many stories about this remarkable soldier including the fact that he never had basic training. Maintein le droit SPEARHEAD First_name: Doug CommentsMike Anderson from IG. First_name: Thomas CommentsI do feel proud to serve with the 3rd Squadron 12th Cav in those years. It was alot of hard work, and we were the best at it. All the alerts, all the time spent on the ARMED REATIONARY FORCE, and until the DOD built us a motor pool we were pulling our tanks out of a mudd pit. It was great experiance and I was hoping that there was going to be recognition for that area and that era. Thank you. First_name: terrance Commentsjust looking for people who served at the same time from 1976-1978 2,36th infantry, 4th platoon mortar and tow platoon First_name: mel CommentsI was just wondering if there were any provisions for the disabled troopers to make it to the reunions? First_name: Leonard CommentsI just returned from Budingen in January, Me and my wife celebrated our 25 wedding anniversary. I really pity the soldiers life in Budingen now, there is nothing that I could see that was geared toward the soldier or his family. It is now more like a remote site and the closest place to get anything done is Hanau. Budingen itself has switched over to tourism and offers nothing for entertainment, once again Go to Hanau! Thanks for serving Guys, keep up the great work, I hope they do not close the place in the next couple of years, but, it may be in your best interest. Comments, I served with 3,12 Cav. A Troop from August of 1976 all the way to March of 1983 as an 11C (4.2) Mortar. During this time frame I was also the Squadron Van V.I.P. Driver for about 1 year and then the Squadron Mail Clerk for about two years. I then went into Nuclear Weapons at Redstone Arsenal Alabama, Fort Hood Texas, Segalsbach Germany form 1988 to 1991 then to Pirmasens Germany from 1991 to 1993. I went back to Redstone Arsenal Alabama as Averger Repair then retired here in Huntsville Alabama. !Swinging Budingen! The year is 1976, the duty was tough the KP, Guard Duty, CP, Field Duty and Alerts were excessive but what the heck, we survived the cold war. A lot of memories of Budingen and surrounding communities, Walking through the castle gate, big bottles of wine, and very fine beer, walks in nearby hills and castle walls. Remember the cliffs? The Zum Ankor, the Hole In The Wall, and other fine drinking establishments. Sheridan Tanks and those train rides were a blast. You never so saw many drunks getting off the train in the morning. It was all we could do to unload the tracks. First_name: Anthony CommentsCheck out the MSN group for all you former RED LIONS Check out unit designator. PS, The Davy Crockett nuclear mortar had been issued to the 2nd of the 48th sometime in or after June, 1962, I believe.
