i was a medic. i didnt win any medals. nor was i the best at anything but i made some good friends and i miss them. remember the honey buns from Mom's Pizza shack ( between the bowling alley and the front gate )actually it was right outside my window ( 2/32 ). great on a cold night when we all had the munchies ( ill buy, you fly ). the rod and gun club. the class six store.the side window by the motor pool where we got our morning coffee. guarding that damn ammo dump at 3 o clock in the morning during the winter. it was tough back there because there was no jeep to start up to keep warm in while looking for the seargent of the guard. bruce lee movies at the theatre. how many did he make anyway? the coffee that came in the mermite cans when we were out in the field...ugh..drinking flippies....take me back just for a day....a big salute to all my fellow spearheaders....go OUTLAWS

This website sure brings back a lot of memeories. My hats off to all that made this possible. I was a Tank mechanic in this company back then. I would really like to hear from some of my old buddies that I spent time with at Ray Barracks. To name a few there was Sgt Perrson, Shank, Sgt Willie D Patterson, Eric Greathouse (Grady), Ronald Ortiz (Squirrel), Snorkel, Margo, Sgt McGuire, Sgt Rutko, and there are many more that slips my mind right now. If anbody else was in B co during this time drop me a line. If you know any of the above people and can get them a message to contact me, please do.

Glad I found this site...very nice. Was in Ray Barracks when they allowed the draftees from the Veitnam war go home in Dec. 1974...it was a turbulent time for all of us, those like myself just coming in, and especially for all the brothers trying to make sense of it all as they left for home. May God bless all of us...we know we did the best we could.

I just came upon the 3rd Armor Division website and was I very impressed with it. Brought back some great memories of what I now realize was a some of the best times of my life. I was stationed at Ray Barracks in Friedberg Germany in 1973 - 1974. My unit was C Company 3/32 Armor ( " Iron Dukes" ). I was the driver of " C-25" M60A1 Battle tank and held the rank of SPC 4 at the time. When I was stationed at there, the 1/32 and 3/32 were the top two tank battalions in USAEUR Upon rotation back to the states, I went to Ft. Hood Texas,C Company 2 Bn / 7th Cav, 1st Cav Div. I would love to hear from any of my fellow troopers that I served with in the 3/32. It’s been a long time, but I have never forgotten the experience nor have I forgotten what a great bunch of guys I served with. I now live in St. Petersburg Florida

I am looking for all people who were stationed at Bretts, Drake, Edwards or Gibbs Kaserne in Frankfurt between 1960 and 1980 and used to hang out at "Freddy's Bier Bar/Pizzeria" or the "Baton Rouge" right next to it and might know my dad Freddy or my brother Steven, or even myself. And who could forget Tony, the crazy Italian?? If you have any pleasant memories about those places, please drop me a line. Let's reminisce a little.

Is it possible to know the approximately location where my uncle, Staff Sergeant Herman J. Foehrer, Company H, 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Division was killed in battle on September 22, 1944? I have letters from Camp Polk (Aug '41 -May '42), Camp Young Desert Training Ctr. (Oct. 1942), Camp Pickett (Jan.'43). He shipped out to England somewhere around Sept. '43. I have a tissue copy of a letter from his Chaplain who said he died "somewhere in Germany." Would appreciate any assistance. Thank you

Thanks for the e-mails. I will attempt to touch on some of the aspects without over doing things. I realize that a guestbook isn’t intended for expounding on what would appear to some or many as pursuing a personal legal agenda. With that said, here goes. My mother-in-law got ahold of my military mailing address (likely from one of the envelopes to the letters I sent my wife). Unbeknown to my wife, her mother sent a letter to the word “Chaplain” at my military mailing address (of course, she left off my name on the envelope). Note: This was some time after my “interview” by the chaplain as previously mentioned.
As events unfolded, my religious rights were violated (the phrase “let me count the ways” comes to mind, but again, this isn’t the place to go into that). Also, my impression is that the Red Cross did not do well in a situation which had soldier religious rights issues (and potential/or real violations). To the extent it is true, soldiers have a certain amount of “religious rights”. This includes the right to not be victimized by actions taken by officials, based upon their assumptions about the faith content and practice regarding an individual soldier. The right to not be victimized by the undue influence of government officials (or proxy government officials) for whom the soldier constitutes a ward of the government, within the extended total institution of the military, is recognized in the law. Accordingly, an individual soldier’s faith content and practice is protected by the law from unauthorized intrusion. For example, a soldier in an interview may volunteer certain information, but may also not agree to go into certain aspects of “practice” of one’s faith. This applies regardless of whether the soldier, was not coerced to be interviewed; was semi-coerced to be interviewed; or was essentially fully coerced to be interviewed (which of course is a separate issue in itself). Note: Claims of “acting in the best interests” of the ward, the institution, other members of the ward’s family, in whatever combination, are subject to legal challenge, particularly due to the violation of the constitutional based separation of church and state, within the context of interpretations of Faith and Practice analysis by the government officials involved, regarding the subject person or persons involved.

Served with HQ & HQ TRp 3/12 Cav. Was assigned to Ground Survalliance Radar Section. 1SG Hartmam was then 1SG, later he was made SGM at Squardon HQ. They served Chile dogs and snacks at the little snack shop on the way to motor pool when we were there. Do they still have a unit in Budegin? Had a lot of good times while station there. Does anybody remember, Charlie,s Bar, Frog Circle, and I think it was called Lena's.

Been a while since I left a message, but I like to read the guest book once a week it brings back alot of good memory's. I was in battalion maintenance HHC 2/32. I remember near the end of the month scraping a few Marks together to buy a greasy pizza from Moms Pizza which was right across the street from the barracks that and a Licher beer. I,d like to hear from MSG Eubanks.

My time in the Bandits is something I can still look back on and feel a sense of comradery and pride, that seems hard to find in this new age. Hope all you guys are doing well. Friedberg was a great little town. I had some good times at "the Glass House". In fact, my only bad experience, was my now "Ex-Wife". Here's wishing the Bandits and the 3AD a long and prestigeous future. Sgt. Wilson

I was at Koleman Kaserne in Gelnhausen for about 3.5 years. I was in the 1st battalion, 33rd Armored Division, Combat Support Company 4.2 mortar platoon Fire Direction Center for most of that time. SSG Willie Hill was my squad leader. (I loved that blue BMW he sold me.) Sgt. Richardson (SGT. Rock) was base gun squad leader. SSG. Benton was platoon sgt. when I got there. When he left, we got SSG. Earl (the Pearl) Monroe. I don't think he liked the fact that I played guitar for one of the 4 or 5 bands on post. All the other members of my band were in 1-48INF (on the hill) and their commander would send a letter to my commander and it come down the chain to Monroe and he would be the one to tell me, reluctantly I think, that I had to go play somewhere. Other good friends I had there were Alberto Perez, William Judd (basic and AIT), Jeff Gunther (basic and AIT), Guilliam, SGT. Colvin and many other Spanish speaking and German friends. Email me at rcj40 at yahoo dot com.

Hard to imagine that was almost 30 years ago! Even after all these years I somehow still sense this compelling need to sweep the motorpool on every friday afternoon! In my home town in pennsylvania they put one of our "short barreled" tanks as a memorial. Brings back a lot of memories when I'm in the area!

What (so-called) “Safety Net” ???
The following is in regard to my four most recent guestbook postings
When I was “interviewed” by the military chaplain he said that a “separation period” of 9 months to a year “would be good”. This position helped him avoid simply dealing with Army policies (however applied, whether by formal or informal means) regarding discretion in authorization of non-Command Sponsored Dependents to locate in the Command.
Later, when I received disquieting news from the homefront it turned out to be a mistake to request the Red Cross Field Director on Post talk to the chaplain.

David is correct. The only restrictions we had were on travel due to out Secret Clearance. The Davy Crockett was an open secret, as time we had to set it for German-American Days, the French War College, and any other VIP's that showed up. I would like to hear from other Davy Crockett member and/or see any pictures of the Davy Crockett that anyone took and kept. Remember the Rock

In response to Raymond Upton's post about the Davy Crockett Section "I understand they were involved with nukes I wondered if they were under orders not to fraternize with the rest of us grunts?" We were not given any such orders. Most of us were pulled from other line companies and in my case and some other members of our section hung out with friends from our old company or "HQ" Co. Most times in the field we were with the 4.2 mortar section My first assignment with the 3-36 Inf. was "B" Company as a rifleman, MOS 111, on B-32 track. Later was switched to B-36 track and was Lt. Harvey's RTO. After a few months and a drivers course on the M113 was transferred to the Davy Crockett section and was told I would be driving one of the sections tracks. Our section bay was on the ground floor of "B" Co. by the end door next to the trash cans. We used "B" Companies Dayroom, And used "Rip" the tailor. Still have a copy of orders for either rifle qualification of "EIB" testing with Raymond's name on the list. Our section had some restrictions on travel which limited the number that could go on leave and/or passes at the same time. Http://www.davesmithphoto.com

For anyone who was there with me, I want to report the passing of a fellow troop and a good buddy back then.......William G. (Lupe) Licata, who went Home in 2003. I talked to his son Chris, and came away from that conversation with a warm feeling; Chris thought the world of Dad. What better legacy?? God Bless ya, Bill.

After I endured the North Atlantic on a troop transport in Feburary 1962 I decided that I needed another line of duty. As I stood outside S-1 in the snow a troop opened up the door and asked, "Does anyone know how to type?" Not wanting to really 'volunteer' I quickly raised my hand. I had become the Company Clerk of Headquarters Company, 2/32. I later moved to S-4 and was that clerk until I rotated back to the States in May 1964. I remember one of the 'hush hush' weapons that we had on post. During German/American open house there sat a Davy Crockett. It was a nuclear weapon mounted on the ground and shot a projectile that looked like a watermellon. For kicks, I located Post Headquarters in the eye piece and took a picture of it in the crosshairs with my 35mm camera. All in all, I had a GREAT experience in my 28 months of duty and made lots of memories and friends.

Although I didn't know it at the time, I miss my time over there on "The Rock!"
It really got to me, how they only had summer for about two weeks in Germany. I remember, in '79, how we had to suspend summer gunnery in Graf because the temprature got over 75 degrees and we were having a drought that caused the brush to catch on fire! We had to stop shooting and go fight the fires.

Lots of great memories from "The Rock". I was in Bravo 2/33 for two and one half years and visited all the attractions of West Germany: Graf, Vilseck,Hohenfels, Frieburg Training Area, and the Frankfurt PX. Left a lot of friends, so if Larry Allen, Sweet James, Tom Arris, Ken Englund, or any others from Bravo Co. are out there, give me a holler!!

I was the HEMITT Wrecker for HHC 1/32AR & HHC 4/67 AR from Jan86 thru Jan88. Capt Seidel was our CO. then. LTC Wheeler was Batt.Com. CSM Dobson was Batt. CSM. BTW, I was in Friedburg 19Feb05. Man, a lot has changed since '88. Got some photos of the place while visiting. I will be forwarding them to the Association when I get them developed. And for ya'll that remember the "Bandit" tank HQ66. The one we used to point the main gun at LTC Wheeler's window on occassion. hehehe! It's still there. But was just moved about 3 weeks ago(on her own power)up to where the Recreation Center is. If anyone remembers me, give me a shout. Later

I was an E-5P at the time. There were 6 of us out of Hanau Germany attached to 503rd support from Ft. Bragg NC. Was a great group of guys even know we were pulled through hell being attached to another unit. We went from about freezing weather in Frankfurt to break a sweat heat when that C5 opened its nose when we landed in Saudi. Hell I still had a field jacket on until that nose opened up. Well if anyone from my 9 1/2 years service reads this, good luck and take care. Was a lot of great times back in the day. God bless America and those who serve.

The 60th Anniversary ceremonies and celebrations of the liberation of Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp take place on April 11 2005. We have been specially asked by the KZ Gedenkstaette Mittelbau-Dora (the camp memorial site administration) to invite officially as honored guests on their behalf US veterans (together with their families and friends) of the 9th Infantry Division, 104th Infantry Division and 3rd Armored Division and attached units which participated in the liberation of Mittelbau-Dora. (www.gomilspec.com) At the same time the new concentration camp museum will be opened. It is of great historical importance because Mittelbau-Dora was where Hitler's terrible V1s and V2s, the original forerunners of today's modern ballistic missiles were manufactured in huge underground factories, which the veterans will visit. Any relevant photographs, documents, objects, etc. given by the veterans will have pride of place in the new museum. A unique, historic and especially moving occasion will be when our veterans and their families meet former Mittelbau-Dora inmates and their families. US military and international VIPs will attend the celebrations which will be covered by the international media. Please email me for further information and tell other 9th ID veterans. Please also tell me of any other websites where I can contact 9th ID veterans.

Hey Gang, In an effort to boost membership in what we believe is the finest Military Organization out there, I'm willing to donate to the first (10) new members, that were stationed at the "Schloss Kaserne" a large 12"X17" Patch commemorating the 3AD at that fine, but gone, historical site. I designed the patch several years ago and had to get permission from the Town of Butzbach to incorporate their “logo” in the patch. After receiving their blessing I had the patch made and have been displaying it ever since, on the back of my motorcycle vest that I wear to most rallies that I attend; including going to “Rolling Thunder” in DC for more then 20 years. Every year I get stopped after the parade by fellow vets, who were in Butzbach, and missing every minute of it. Last October I flew back out to Germany and personally presented the Town with one of the patches, which is now permanently part of the Museum Archives. I spent hours with Dr. Dieter Wolf, their Director, looking over old photographs and walking down memory lane. Anyway, we want new members and if you look at all the entries in the Guestbook we should be several thousand strong. Let’s make it so boys and girls. The low membership fee does not even cover keeping up this web site, if it was not for all the hours the troops are volunteering to keep it going. So if you’re ready download and print the application, fill it out and become a contributing member of the Bad’es Division that walked across several continents. Steve, our secretary, will let me know who are the first (10) to sign up and I will send you the patch, free. If you want to see the patch and are serious, e-mail me and I will attach a picture file with your response. I’ll be wearing it to Bike Week in Myrtle Beach this May and don’t forget our buddies at this years “Rolling Thunder”. Raimund dscinc@qis.net

Served in Hqs Troop from Aug 77 through till Mar 79, as the S-3 GDP Plans and Air officer under Malcolm Gilchrest, then as S-1 for Bill Blake. From Mar79 till Oct 80, commanded B Troop. Blessed with the finest NCOs -- 1SGT Gerald Ebright,PSGTs John Morgan and George Sweet, and the finest junior NCOs and young cavarlymen with whom I had the privilege to serve in my Army career.
Command in 1979 is recorded as the toughest time in the recent history of the Army to have had a command, especially at company level -- I disagree -- the young men in B Troop were among the finest I ever experienced, and it was my honor to have known them and served with them. Too many bad things were written about that time in the Army, especially regarding those of us overseas -- dumb, drug addicted, and incompetent; however, in spite of a president who seemed bent on tearing down the military with his "dream" that world peace was what mankind wanted more than anything else and we didn't need a well-equiped and trained Army, and a Congress coming off the Vietnam War holding similar beliefs, both apparently supported by an indifferent nation of people who thought soldiers were overpaid, an unnecessary tax burden, and that overseas tours served only as a great and free chance for us to see Europe -- we had drug problems, true, but they were not like they were portrayed in the newspapers, especially for the combat units with border and covering force missions -- these Cold War days were extremely tough and demanding times (nothing like sitting in a tank or PC looking across at an armed enemy and knowing that we didn't have bullets), with politically created economic woes and tense Cold War rhetoric -- and every politician's answer to the problems being to cut the military budgets -- enough ranting -- it was an honor to serve with the Third Armor Division and an even greater honor to serve with the Division's only Cavalry Squadron whose members were up to the job, proved it every day, and will always be held in my highest regards and esteem as the finest of America's citizens -- Germany was expensive, but it was a great experience, and it provided me with a life-long love of our Nation's unsung heroes -- American soldiers who are always taken for granted, seen with indifference and sometimes contempt -- until the balloon goes up -- then we become the world's best and brighest -- Semper Paratus!!
And for the members of America's Greatest Generation -- I know you would be proud that the legacy you initiated, and the standards you established -- were upheld in the finest of standards by the young men who volunteered their lives to continue the reputations you started in World War II.

In follow up to the most recent posting, I simply overheard the “pro-active” informal story promoting the sending of the Second of the 48th Infantry up the Berlin access autobahn in the Fall of 1962. There were at least two considerations against such an action. The most obvious is that even in the arduous times of the Autumn 1961 Berlin Crisis a “frontline” unit was not picked to make the Berlin journey. Instead, an infantry unit slightly larger than a ROAD infantry battalion (called Battlegroup in those pre-ROAD infantry division times) from the 3AD’s back-up division (8ID) was selected. That unit was stationed at Mannheim, back near the Rhine River; one of its company commanders was CPT David Hackworth. During the international crisis times of the early 1960s it was highly unlikely that a frontline infantry battalion focused on their GDP positions in the Fulda Gap (see Colin Powell’s comments) would have been pulled out of the line for a “show of force” up the autobahn to Berlin. Also, there was only one infantry battalion stationed at Gelnhausen in the early 1960s (the 1st of the 48th didn’t arrive until the ROAD reorganization in the summer of 1963). The Davy Crockett nuclear mortars went with us to the Field on maneuvers in the Fulda Gap. The key however was in having the nuclear warheads arrive from their separate storage site, which was not at Gelnhausen.

The elevated alert level in response to the latter part of October 1962 Cuban Crisis prompted off-the-record assessments in 2d ARB, 48th Infantry Battalion Headquarters (again, these were mostly S2 & S3 staff) on such matters as the presence of, and the potential jeopardy to, U.S. military dependents in such places as the 14th Cav’s posts at Fulda and Bad Hersfeld up near the Border, and the military dependent population attached to the Gelnhausen combat forces. One informal consensus had it that there should be a “no-dependent” (also called “unaccompanied tour”) zone within a strip behind the NATO side of the Border. The proposal didn’t go into specifics; the parties were all Gelnhausen based, so they likely didn’t presume to speak for the situation faced at the 3AD’s other two combat commands, based at Friedberg and Kirch Goens. Also, one of the more colorful stories comparing the Fall of 1962 (Cuban Crisis) with the Fall of 1961 (Berlin Crisis) had it that if the 2d of the 48th Infantry was picked to do a “show of force” up the autobahn to Berlin, “we would take our Davy Crocketts with us.” This was in comparison to the August 1961 order that sent the 1st Battlegroup, 18th Infantry, 8ID (from Mannheim) to Berlin via that access autobahn. The 8ID was the other division in V Corps, and was the back up to the 3AD. August 1961 was approximately 4 months before the Davy Crockett entered the US Army inventory.

As previously posted, my “new guy” interview with the Company Commander took place after my first field exercise. Two impressions stand out from that meeting, both of which relate to the combat mission of the Gelnhausen based troops (only 3AD troops were stationed at Gelnhausen). (1) On the one hand was the relative isolation of the Gelnhausen garrison from the other two-thirds*** of the 3AD’s combat command structure (namely, the other two combat commands at Friedberg and Kirch Göns respectively). (2) On the other hand, there were the crowded conditions of the housing environment for the German nationals. The Army referred to such non-Army involved circumstances as being conditions “on the (German) economy.” Of course, the German housing conditions were not of great significance or importance to the average unmarried GI living in the barracks on Coleman Kaserne. *** This is best explained as follows. Friedberg and Kirch Göns somewhat straddled the autobahn leading north from Frankfurt. Those two garrisons were strategically positioned, whether by design or compromise, to cover the northern avenue of approach leading out of the Fulda Gap, from the Fulda-Bad Hersfeld area, which swung north of the Vogelsberg, and then southwest towards Frankfurt. It then vectored along the base of the Taunus mountains, toward Wiesbaden, with the goal of bridging the Rhine nearby. In comparison, Gelnhausen somewhat guarded the southern outlet or avenue from the Fulda Gap. This avenue derived its name due to its swinging south of the Vogelsberg. This southern route was designated a “strategic corridor” between Fulda and Frankfurt; however, the vectoring would have crossed the Main River on more of a direct route toward bridging the Rhine in the Worms/Mannheim area. (This was somewhat on a direct route along the narrowest east-west area, or “wasp waist”, of West Germany.) Note: My initial orientation to some of these tactical and strategic concepts and evaluations was due to the circumstances of my September, 1962 assignment as a radio operator (Morse Code, RTT) to the Second of the 48th’s Battalion Headquarters, specifically, the S3 (operations) shop. A few weeks later we were in the middle of the USAREUR fallout attendant to the Cuban Crisis (this was in the latter part of October, 1962). My impression was that some of Battalion Headquarters staff were still smarting over the U.S. having to back down (their interpretation) to the Soviets over the Berlin Wall events which occurred in the autumn of 1961. (According to the shop-talk, the 1961 planning included sending U.S. armor up the shortest overland Berlin access route through East Germany.) Both in the field and in Battalion Headquarters on Post I overheard several interesting conversations, and caught peeks at various scale maps, and what amounted to tactical and strategic sketches (a handful). The Field Command Post (“CP”) was built around a combination of the S2 and S3 shops.

Here is some more information on the destruction and construction at Ayers Kaserne "K/G" "The Rock" is going to become "Maga Park Rhein-Main". This site shows the plan and includes an aerial of the place looking west with Niederkleen at the very top left. http://www.piskeundpartner.de/frameset/index_flash6.htm There is also a live webcam. It doesn't show a lot and not sure where it is pointing but it may be in the Hawk site area. Another site has some shots from the ground of our buildings. http://www.lostplaces.de/ayers/index.html the source I got these sites from tells me there will be a WalMart logistic center for Europe there. They still have to clean up the soil because of heavy contamination of POL.
