Arrived December 1959 as Private, M52 [self prpelled Howitzer] Driver, just in time to particpate in Wintershield 1, one cold SOB, made Pfc, Assistant Gunner, made Cpl as Gunner, was sent to 7th Army NCO Academy at Bad Toelz, promoted to Sgt. on graduation by Gen. Creighton Abrams, Recon Sergeant/FO until discharge. The beer was great, the ladies fabulous and the Dollar was worth 4 DM [about 2 Euros today]. A good experience, among good and generous people, no regrets. Spent a lot of time in the Fulda Gap, knew it better than the natives and knew a lot of the natives living there.

Was in B 122nd on Fliegerhorst Kaserne, Erlensee (outside of Hanau). One of the first female mechanics. There was nothing nice about being there in 1976-79. Post-Vietnam, drugs, mutinies, and worst of all, Alexander Haig. I wouldn't even call it the Army. The beer was good.

My grandfather, Walter E. Engels was an enlisted Pvt. in the 3rd AD, (although I don't know which unit) during the 42-45 campaigns in Europe. He was in a tank unit under General Rose, that much I do know. He died peacefully a few years ago a very happy man with a large family. My Uncle, Steven West, served with the 3rd Armored in World War II. My Uncle died a couple of years ago and I am just doing research on my family's military record in WWII. He was transferred from the 106 Infantry as a replacement. He originally was in CO. M, 423rd Infantry regiment, but he was made a replacement in the 3rd, I don't know what unit he served in. He apparently was with the 3rd when it landed at Omaha on June 23-24, 1944, and was with it all the way to Dessau on the Elbe on VE day.

Although I took basic at Ft Knox in Charlie Company, and AIT in Delta Company, I was reassigned to HHC in 1957 as the Battalion Maintenance Clerk. I served in that capacity until October 1958, when I returned to the States. I retired in 1977 in the grade of First Sergeant E-8. Hard to believe, since I could never get promoted above PFC while in the 37th AIB (2d ARB,52d Inf). Best three years of my young life tho. After retirement, I worked for Martin-Marietta and the Boeing Company as a Senior Logistics Engineer. Hello CWO Roy E. Richardson if you're out there.

Just stopping back by after a long absence. I was with B 1-48 and B 4-18 after redesignation. Went to the S-3 4-18 and worked with Steve Pool, Don Stewart, COL Fulcher, MAJ Fitch, and CSM McBee. Moved up to be the 2nd BDE 11M master gunner after the ground war. Left to do the drill sergeant thing at Benning in 1991 and made it to SFC. Went to OCS in '96 and now I am a CPT commanding my second company here at Benning.
I will always remember the great times and people in Gelnhausen and it was one of the best units I've been in over the last 18 years. Still have contact with SSG Stewart,1SG Mark Mello, and SSG Canty from A 4-18 (all here at Benning), COL Fulcher (7th ATC), SFC Pool at Penn State ROTC, SFC Mike Laughead doing AC/RC near Atlanta, and a score of others. Feel free to drop me a line. I have a ton of info I'll try and add to the site after I make coordination with the webmasters. I also have paper copies of the VUA, DA orders, and narrative for anyone who wants one. I'll try and get them scanned to cut down on the snail mail.

The A3ADV Reunion is just a few weeks away. The dates are 17-21 July 2002 in Louisville KY. There is still time to register for the event. We have received many phone calls & email notes from veterans stating that they were attending the reunion but many have not registered. Our day trip to Fort Knox on 19 July should be interesting & exciting. We have transportation lined up to drive us to Fort Knox. We will start the day with a memorial service to honor the 3 AD & veterans in the memorial park. We will then visit the Patton museum, our lunch will be at the Leaders Club, after lunch we will have a static display of the current US Army Armored Vehicles with active duty soldiers available to answer questions, we will then move to the M1A1 tank driving simulator where we will each get a chance to experience the thrill of driving the M1A1 tank.

Spent several at Ayers kaeserne as a medic with Baker co 1st batalion 22d inf. rct. At the time there were no trees on that base due to high security. It was in later years that it was nick named the Rock. In 1999 the base was deserted having at that time being maintained by the German govt. I dont know what the present status is but they were considering it for a prison . Toured the base in 99 compliments of the German guards. It looks about the same as in 1954 a tough place back then to pull duty.We were replaced by the 2d armored div. in 56 .

My name is Ronald J. Ferrier. I am writing to find out if someone might have remembered my father, Joe Ferrier. He was with the 83rd armd. rec. btn. He was a T corporal. He told me that he was with the Division since its creation in 1942, and trained at Camp Beauregard, Ft Polk, Mojave Desert, Indiantown Gap, and was stationed in England. After arriving in France after DDay, he took part in the St Lo operation, and was wounded while on recon at a crossroads near Rennes on 8-16-1944, in both legs and one arm. He was sent back to a military hospital in England for several months, then was returned to the US. Their, he spent two more years in and out of hospitals before being released. Good site, didn't know that it existed, just surfing around and glad I found it. The time during Desert Shield/Storm was a very memorable time for me. I enjoyed serving with those infantry guys. I learned a lot, met a lot of good soldiers. I was in the Commo section at the time and still remain today a Signal soldier. My father, Vincent Gerard Cucciniello, was a part of the 3rd AD. I know he drove a truck in the "Red Ball Express" and had a photograph of his victory in the boxing ring. He was in France, Belgium, Luxenburg and Germany in WW II. He never spoke much about the war, but I remember that he talked of a dog fight that had burning pieces of metal falling down around him. I don't have any of his papers, and he passed away several years ago. I plan to research his service record for my kids and their children. He spoke fondly of the men he served with. Thanks.

I'be been checking in here from time to time for over 2 years now and only one other person that was on The Rock the same time as me, (HHC 1ST BDE, 3AD 1987-1990) has checked in. I served with 2-48 In until it deactivated in 83 and moved across the Kaserne to HHC 1-33 AR. Came back in 2002 as a National Guardsmen activated after Sept, 11. G-Town grew some, but the Kaserne was relatively intact after being returned to the Germans. A Lot of good memories

Detained by the East Germans, turned over to the Soviets while on patrol in East Berlin. We had ventured into East Germany though the Bucher Forest while checking out an old commo site, patrol maps were incomlete and we ulitimately had to challenge a German guard post to return to East Berlin. Spent several hours with the Soviets/ KGB before being permitted to return via CP Charlie to West Berlin. Communication with HQ was sporatic due to limited range of radios. Debriefing post detention was most interesting.

1977-1980 A co 3/36 inf on the rock, seems like yesterday. one of the few that actually finished their tour, never once crossed my mind to bail early. can hold my head high now. i remember when i flew in to frankfurt and was sent over to the replacement company the buzz was pray you aren't going to the rock. guess what? the rock was a tense place, many vietnam vets, some still enlisted. when i got to A co the 1st sgt was top hippenstiel, anyone remember him? he had been in the co 7 yrs! if i'm not mistaken A CO 3/36 had about the best rep in the brigade. screw up your ass was gone, the nco's were his boys. unfortunately he left on a medical, overnight. think Bird took over, things began to go downhill slowly. Buddied up with Juan Garcia, Joe Salas, and Jerry Schultz. we spent a lot of weekends at the Roadhouse,Sonya's in KG closeby, and Frankfurt. Anyone remember the Yes club? Needless to say smoked a lot of hash. I remember one of the first times i smoked was at a couple tanker scouts' pad in kg, they filled the bowl(beercan) passed it around, I took a hit and dropped the damn thing in a shag carpet! Fucking 'cruit! When we trained we trained hard but god that clothing was shit! Dug the hell out of the woods and expected everyone to toe the line. got thrown in the tc hatch early and could read a map blindfolded. Had a couple opportunities to leave the line platoons but always refused. could shoot the hell out of the m60 and 50 cal. nobody could touch me breaking them down. used to crack up when the transfers would come in from the states, especially the nco's. most couldn't belive what they were in for. Hate to say it but ft cambell or ft carson just didn't prepare for germany. did pnco and bnco academy. way too many of the cadre were chickenshit and disciplin suffered badly at times. race relations weren't great and i'd like to see some of those chickenshit, punk ass bros' now. in retrospect i guess many of the nco's just wanted to do their tour and get back to the states. wish i could remember the name of the lt that pulled the 45 on me and told me if we were in combat he could shoot me. sure, dude. There wasn't enough sfc aguan's or crowley's. weapons plt always had straight shooters. loved the snow and the cold, loved to watch guys suffer. probably played the soldier thing too much but did get to berlin a couple times, paris several, amsterdam, and even took a hop to athens for a week. never did get over all the castles and the countryside, still in awe. by lte 79, early 80 we had 3 sgt thomas' in the co, i'd dig hearing from the one from kentucky, you were a credit to the army and i know you did 20. i did figure out years later if comrad would have come over the border 1st bgde wouldn't have lasted 2 days, but then we never really expected the balloon to go up. is my old buddy tim mullins out their? or tj from tennessee? how about rawls from baltimore? Hambone, or speed? went to ft hood for my last 6 months, made up for a lot of lost time but what a difference. formations were optional, most couldn't break track to save their life, fires during manueuvers was almost automatic. felt like an old timer overnight.

I was the Bn XO's driver in Desert Storm. I will join the association when my financial status improves. I have photos and a few records that I will provide when I can.
I was there when 3AD passed duties to 1AD. I was guarding the vehicles (drivers duties) during the ceremony. Oddly, the most vivid memory I have of the ceremony has little to do with the ceremony. When the cannons were fired for the salute near the end of the ceremony, dozens of car alarms were activated. The ceremony proceeded with the alarms blaring in the background. No one flinched. But when the order, "Dismissed" was issued, a flood of personnel raced to the parking lot with keys in hand.
Nice sight, brought back some memories. Some good, some bad, but I wouldn't trade the experience of "The Rock" and the Welcome Inn for anything.

I was at Gelnhausen during the Kennedy ERA, was in shower when heard of his death, Unit headed for Fulda Gap for extened period, we thought sure "Joe" was coming across. Was ther when the tank was taken for a joy ride, the Sgt. was shot by a pvt. as we prepare to move out for field trip and watched as a German civilian parashootists shoot failed to open during a afternoon jump south of the Post. Just making my weekly check to see if any of my Gelnhausen brothers have dropped in here. It is funny, but it's been over 12 years since I was in Gelnhausen, but I can picture everything in my mind as if it were yesterday - the EARLY morning runs through the "cabbage patch," or to the "blockhaus;" the smell of diesel fumes from the track park; trying to railhead at "o-dark thirty" in the rain while you are still half asleep praying your ground guide is giving you accurate directions; freezing to death in "Doughboy City" while we were at MOUT training in Berlin; and one of my most favorite memories - REFORGER '88! I guess it is like they say, "memories of your fellow soldiers and good duty" will last you a lifetime!

Hi,
I forgot to put the dates that Dad was at this unit they were 1963-1964. I am trying to find info about my father James Lee Napier who was a Spec. 5 at the time of his death, resulting from a car crash in St. James, MO. on November 12, 1070. I was refereed to this site by a J. Wann who served at Hessen Homburg Kaserne with Dad. Dad was M113 driver. You can click on the link and see a special page with a photo I made for Dad.
Any help would be great, I was 4 years old when Dad died and would like to find out what he was like when he was in the Army. I served 3 years in Menden, West Germany and I wish I had known he was in Hanau.

I want to make an appeal to all members for photos made from whatever war or whatever year of anything concerning the Division. A great website honoring 3rd Armored veterans would be a website containing many pictures of the Division as a real part of American heritage. This is a plea to send me any pictures you can and they will become a part of the website. I, in turn, will share the pictures with individual members. For instance I have a great picture of Colonel Welborn and Lt. Colonel Lovelady to popular combat leaders under who many men served under.I also have a picture of Sgt. I was the Engineer Equipment officer at BN HQ in 1983, and was the Co Commander of D Company from 1984-1988. It was an outstanding experience, at the height of the Cold War and having lots of funds to buy ammo, equipment and training time. Just returned from Gelnhausen. The facade of the line barracks have been completely redone. Various companies occupy them including a sports club where you can get a sauna. Battalion headquarters (from a 1963 perspective) is now the home of the city of Gelnhausen and a cafe with a sun porch. The 'essence' of the German buildings have been retained although weird-looking glass entrances have been added to the headquarters building and a connecting glass tunnel now attaches the headquarters building and the former commo buiding. The 6th artillary buildings still look the same. All in all you still get the flavor of the old kaserne, however, I'm told the tank park may be used to build a mall. The people couldn't have been nicer and often remember the troops from the eighties and nineties with fondness. From what I could learn it's generally thought that relations in the 60's and 70's were not as good. At least that's what I heard. I stayed at the "Schelm bon Bergen" which gives a discount to GI's who were stationed in Gelnhausen. Prices are from 30 to 40 dollars a night. The number is 49 605 127 55. Its in a beautiful spot next to the Catholic church in the obber market. Anyway, just thought I'd add this for anyone interested.
