Looking back on New Year's eve 1970. I was Brigade Duty officer in Kirchgoens.Received a call from the officer's club. The occupants were barricaded inside while a bunch of very drunken soldiers had the place surrounded. They had several cans of gasoline and were getting ready to burn down the building.

I hopped in the jeep and flew down there over some icy streets. It was a bad scene intitially and I pulled the 45. Felt like Barney Fife when I realized the ammo clip was in my pocket.

After about an hour of talking, everyone came to their senses and the situation was diffused. In the end, we all had a good laugh.

Anyone remember that night?

MOST OF US DID A LOT OF GROWING UP THERE AND WILL ALWAYS HAVE MANY FUN MEMORIES AND A PLACE RESERVED DEEP IN OUR SOUL FOR OUR TIME SPENT THERE. IF SOMEONE READING THIS SERVED WITH CO. A 1/33 ARMOR BETWEEN JUNE 71-FEB74, WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

I am a son of the late S/Sgt. Robert Weaver, who served with 3AD from the early 40's at Camp Mojave, Indiantown Gap, and I believe Ft. Knox, until the end of WWII in Germany. At some time in the early 60's all of my father's records of his service, aside from some photos, were lost. Although he did not speak much of his combat experience, he had fond memories of his time at Mohave and other training areas. From what I have learned from relatives over the years, he served with either Headquarters Company or in combat trains during Normandy, Belgium, the Bulge and in Germany. I would be interested in hearing from 3AD vets who might remember him.

I was squad leader of 3d sq/1st Plt Co B for 3 years. I left just before 1/36 was to undergo transition to 11M/Bradley, so my whole time was as 11B. Our Platoon trained at Graf & Hoenfels twice each year as well as 2 trips (for training) to Berlin. We also trained with a unit of the Bundeswher for a week up in Bergen (dismounted, to spare the expense of shipping 4 M113A3's). We also trained "Operation Flintlock", in the spring of 86 as OPFOR for SF Reserve units from the states. All told-it was a time of excellent training and a general good time. I remember my first "forward battle position" overlooking the Fulda Gap and thinking, "If they come, we'll never get out of here alive." I had been in the country about a month and this was my first assignment as a squad leader. My squad was to hold a bridge next to a bakery, to the east was about a mile of open field, then hills. We were easy prey for any Soviet tanks that would have come through those hills. All we had to our backs was some M-60A1's. They would fare well against their Soviet counterparts, but we were in the middle. I was glad for the bakery, though. I was much happier with our later positions, and do not know if the one by the river was given to another luckless squad or was abandoned to the new plan. I also had the privelige of training our Bn rifle team in competition during the spring and summer of 88. We were only able to come up with 5th place in the USAREUR competion. 1st place went to the team from 2/36 Inf from the Rock. They had some really good instrucion and leadership. As I recall, the team from 1/48 Inf did well too, that year. We had a lot of time and ammo with which to train, as well as much logistical help for transportation and supply. I can't forget "JaxSnax" run by our supply sergeant at many training fields. As well as "AllStar Wrestling" with the 1SG in the tents in the field. Or the sign in Range Control, Wildflicken, "Failure to plan ahead on your part, does not constitute an emergency on my part" Or the one on the CSM's door, "If you can't handle the answer, don't ask the question."-Thanks, CSM James Talbot for your wisom-"If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying. Good training-I wish all well who served in any capacity- I was especially proud of the way 5/18 Inf conducted itself in the Gulf. 1/36 became 5/18 after transition to Bradleys. Good job men. Deeds, not words. Out

I remeber having my first Christmas dinner at the Sgt Elvis A. Presley mess hall. They had this big picture of him hanging up and was playing "Blue Christmas". Until this day when I hear that song the memories come flooding in.

I lived in Hanau as a dependant. My father was assigned to the 75th Field Artillery Unit. I remember walking through the main gate at Pioneer Kaserne many times as a young army "brat." We had to show either our dog tags, or ID card to get in. I lived in nearby New Argonne Kaserne and went to school in Old Argonne Kaserne. The years were 1957-59. The photo on your main page taken in 1959 brought me back many years.

Well just wanted to say Merry Christmas to all and hope that this season is a joyous one wherever you may be. Let us remember all those who are defending freedom around the world. We all at one time have served thru the holidays and know how hard it is to be away from family and friends. Remember that Jesus Christ is the reason for the season. May the Lord bless you and your families this Christmas.

ps.. After researching a little further, I was wrong about the mess hall at Friedberg. It was named after Sgt. Elvis Presley, the 1/32 Armor Mess hall.

Wish all Spearheaders and friends of them a Merry Christmas and Great New Year in 2003. The best years of my life were spent in 3 AD, B Co. 2/33 AR, 1981-83 at Kirchgoens, we trained hard, were proud and ready to defend the Fulda Gap. A Co. 1/33 AR, 1985-86 at Gelnhausen, 1SG Johnson and Cpt Fisher loved PT and running to the "Block House". D Co. 3/8 CAV. and training for the Canadian Army Trophey which 4/8 CAV went on to win for the 1st time a US team ever won. I'm sure our competition made them a better outfit. (they were never really as good as us) Desert Storm, with D Co. 3/8 Cav, we supported 4/18 Inf. on the morning of the 27th against the Republican Guard, you guys will always be my Brothers, GOD BLESS YOU ALL. Honor and Courage!!!

Happy Holidays to all the soldiers past and present Spearheaders and others. For some reason, even though I'm from New England, cold winter mornings always remind me of my time in Germany, especially when the cold morning air has a mix of a diesel engines exhaust in it. Reminds me of ice cold mornings in Graf and I'm standing on my 109 waiting for the engine to warm up. Smoking a cigarette, needing to piss, and freezing my ass off. Nothing will ever be as bad as that but leave me with a great memory. I can't quite put my finger on it, anyone else out there know what I'm talking about.

Any where you went around Ray Barracks you would see pictures of Elvis. The barber who cut his hair for the first time was still there when I was stationed there. He had the hair clippers and the comb he used on Elvis on display along side a picture of him cutting Elvis's hair. Im sure many others got to see this display. Even CIF had pictures of him picking up his field gear. If my memory serves me right, the Bandit mess hall was named after Elvis. I never paid to much attention to all the hoopla. It was many years after I left the military that I started mentioning to my friends that I was stationed in the same place Elvis was. I just got laughs from most of them, but what do they know about serving with the best damn division on earth! SPEARHEAD FOREVER

I was stationed at Ayers Kaserne Kirschgoens and Presley was at Friedburg, my cousin Lavaughn Moody was in the Artillery at Friedburg and saw Presley on many occasions. His Mom had died and he brought his Grandmother and Dad to Germany they did rent a large house in Bad Nauheim he had to stay in the barracks during our many alerts. I remember one incident that involved young teen age girls from Sweden or Norway who had come to Germany to see Presley, they threw a rock at his home and he came outside and talked to them there was a write up in The Stars and Stripes. during Wintershield I was a squad leader and we picked up Presley's LT. in our M59 PC Presley was "road guarding and directing traffic like a lot of other guys, it was cold and snowing but, he soldiered like everyone else. I'm sure he received some privileges but, he refused a commission and soft duty in Special Services like eddy Fisher and other celebs did. I respect him for that.

In regards to Elvis, From what I have researched and what I was told when I was in Friedberg, Elvis had a house in Bad Nauheim and did not live on post. His Father, Vernon also lived there while Elvis was stationed at Ray Barracks. As far as KP and Guard Duty, he did have to do his share. The Day room in A Company 1/32 Armor was dedicated to Elvis, There was Old albums and pictures on the walls, along with a guitar. If you watch the movie "GI Blues" you will notice the 3 AD patch he wears along with the 32nd Armor Crest. Check out the Elvis section of this website and it will tell more of Elvis's stay in Friedberg. As of 1985 they had not named the Mess hall after Elvis. Bandit for Life, Spearhead Forever!

Re Elvis in the Army. I was company clerk of HHC, 3AD and we had a black NCO (whose name I cannot remember) who worked in the R&U shop on Drake Kaserne. I happened to drop in one day on my way back from the 'burn cage'. The NCO and another GI were arguing about Elvis. The NCO had been Elvis' Mess Sgt. in Friedburg. He said he had pictures of them together when Elvis was on KP. The other GI did not believe him. They made a fairly substantial bet(payday stakes) and the NCO who lived off post in quarters phoned his wife and she brought the pictures down. I remember one of the pictures showed the NCO and Elvis with their arms around each others necks and Elvis had written 'To Sgt SO AN SO, The best Mess Sgt in the US Army, signed Elvis Presley'. This NCO said Elvis pulled KP and guard duty just like every one else. The word I got was that after Elvis was in country a while he got permission to live off post with his family like a lot of other GIs who brought their families over. I think he got drafted and served his country honorably just like the rest of us did.

Was on "The Rock" from 1979-82. I visited The Rock again in 1997, just before it was closed, and in 1999, after it had been returned to the Germans. Kinda sad ... barracks and motor pools all abandoned, gates locked. A German gate guard told me all the local towns were fighting over who was going to get the property. BTW, Schloss Kaserne in Butzbach was mostly torn down a few years ago. So much for history.

To Walt's memo of 12/16 concerning elvis helping build and NCO or EM club at Ft. Hood. I took basic in 50th arb 2ad across the street from Presley, He was 2 weeks ahead of me. we both entered the army at old Kennedy Hospital in Memphis Tn. To show that he was treated equally(at least that's how we felt)He bas in old "temporary" barracks from WWII era while we were in new three story self contained units very modern. After our 2 weeks leave I was again stationed across the street from him as I took AIT in 51st inf. i had applied for OCS and was a squad leader his unit and our stole mops and brooms and cleaning equipment from one another before an inspection. All in good fun. I never heard anything about an EM or NCo club that he was involved in. I was not a big Elvis fans but, I remember one sunday afternoon seeing him on the back porch oof the mess hall peeling potatoes and a line of GI's a mile long waiting to get his autograph, my roommate got one for me to send to my 14 year old nephew who has since died and the autograph is long lost. Elvis had been to Memphis to visit his dying Mother and was late returning when a Texas State Trroper gave him a ticket for speeding near Waco. We heard he lost his NCO armband as a squad leader and received an article 15. I don't know that for sure. I DO KNOW FOR SURE THAT HE EARNED THE RESPECT OF ME AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS AFTER WE WERE ALL IN GERMANY.

Great site. My dad was with the 28th ID, 110th Rgt., 2nd Bn, "E" Co. I am a Master Sergeant in the USMCR. I have a question for any old time Sherman crewmen who might be kind enough to respond.

Was the .50 caliber machine gun on the turret mount commonly used against infantry targets? It looks like the commander would have to get out of the turret to fire it at the ground. Could the .50 be fired at ground targets without leaving the tank? Seems pretty suicidal to leave the cupola with enemy infantry about. Thanks in advance for your response.

I ran the battalion canteen where we sold beer, pop, snacks, and showed a different xxx movie every night we were there. CSM Hesterlee was responsible for making sure the troops were entertained.

I searched the web and two newspapers today looking for some mention of the attack on Pearl Harbor 61 years ago, seems the "politically crowd" managed to snuff out any public recognition of that day. i feel the politicians in DC in 1941 knew well ahead of time about the impending attack and chose to allow it to happen for economic reasons. That, in NO WAY takes away from the great patriotism shown by millions of Americans and they darn well deserve to be remembered for their sacrifices..

I believe there is a missing Cold War victim. My memory is unclear on this, but, as I recall, a young troop (age 19, I think) dropped dead during a morning run on the Rock about 1/2 way through my tour. I remember someone deciding that we could no longer run if the temp was under 20(30?)degrees because this is what killed the kid. The SDNCO at Bde HQ told me his lungs "froze up"... anyone else remember this event? Unfortunately, I never knew his name.

I heard on the radio the other day during the Thanksgiving holiday that the protected don't know and do not realize just what takes place. (from a currently active soldier). I WAS A COOK WHEN THIS ACCIDENT HAPPENED... IN 1969 CO.B'S M-88 WAS PULLING A TANK BACK FROM THE FIELD WHEN IT JACK-KNIFED AND WENT OVER THE EDGE OF A BRIDGE. 3 PEOPLE WERE INSIDE THE 88, A GUY NAMED MC-INTIRE WAS THE 88'S TC THE DRIVER WAS KILLED(CRUSHED FROM THE WAIST UP)AND HE HAD HIS HANDS ON THE SWITCHES THAT KILLED THE GAS ENGINE. THE 88 WENT OVER 1ST AND LANDED UPSIDE DOWN WITH THE M-60A1 LANDING ON TOP OF IT. THIS DRIVER IN HIS DEATH SAVED THE OTHERS FROM POSSIBLE BURNING OR BLOWING UP BY KILLING THE ENGINE. I WAS THEN PULLED FROM THE MESSHALL AND STARTED MY OJT AS A MECHANIC AND THE DRIVER OF THE 88...ANYONE REMEMBER HIS NAME AND DID HIS FAMILY RECEIVE A HERO'S COMIDATION

Greetings, Take a look at our web page the link of which is below.

http://www.36engr.cityslide.com

The purpose of this web site is to re-connect with old buddies, exchange news and views, revive old stories, renew old acquaintances, and indulge in a bit of nostalgia. The contribution of photographs by various individuals provides enjoyment to all and is a tremendous help in accomplishing this purpose. This web page is focused on all those who had some connection with the 36th Engineer Group in Korea during the conflict. So in Korea we knew lots of people and now all this time has passed and you wonder. Just what happened to them all? Locating and finding old friends or acquaintances from about fifty years ago from your time in the service can be difficult. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the world and lose track of the people who made that point in time very memorable to us all.

Would want to post on my web page or maybe just your Email address? Feel free to make a post or a statement in my Guest Book.

Ed Usonis edwardoo@msn.com

I served in Hanau (B-Co for about 18 months, then in HHC and S-2 staff for about 30 months). One of my memorable projects was building an inflatable "temporary barracks" for Div. HQ troops in Frankfurt. The troops weren't too impressed with their new living quarters and every day for a few weeks, the building mysteriously developed new holes and would deflate. After a while, new living quarters were found, and the inflatable building idea was abandoned.

I also recall building a bell tower at the chapel in Gelnhausen and a PT course with rapelling tower on the hill overlooking the Kasern. One of my more anxious moments was when our equipment dug up a WWII "potato masher" during construction of the course.

One of the regular jobs my platoon had was repairing maneuvre damage after division exercises. Those 60 ton tanks sure tore up the roads.....

It would be great to reconnect with any of the folks from the 23rd and swap stories.

I joined the 3-61 in Ft. Bliss, Tx, prior to its being deployed to Germany and was assigned to various batteries, working in maintenance. When the unit deployed I accompanied the equipment by rail to Beaumont, Tx and then by ship to Bremerhaven, Germany, and then by rail to Budingen. I was assigned to S1, S2, S3, and functioned as Battalion Ammo Sgt. I was Training NCO for Capt. Starkey and First Sergeant Berg. Learned a lot, loved the duty and think about my friends from the Battalion, and from Budingen, a lot.

Spent 3 years on the Rock, hated every minuit. That was in the days when they tricked you into volunteering for Europe. The promised me a chance to see the world for half of my tour and then back stateside for the second half. I found out at in processing that my contract read a MINIMUM of 16 months in Germany. My ETS date was three years(less Boot camp) from that moment. Met a lot of good guys though(in the same boat) and we made it.

IT WAS NO EUROPEAN VACATION. ITS HARD FOR A COMBAT FORCE TO STAY FIGHTING SHARPE WHEN DURING SUCH TIME UNITS ARE UNDER STRENGTH IN MANPOWER AND EQUIPEMENT.WHEN I ARRIVED TO CSC RECON PLT. WE HAD 12 TRACK VEH. (M114"S) 1 M113 AND JEEP. ALL BUT 1 WAS RED LINED!!! THE BARRECKS WHERE DUMPS. AND ATTITUDE OF TROOPS NOT THE BEST. BUT THAT WAS DUE TO THE TIME AND PROBLEMS OUR NATION AS AWHOLE WERE GOING THREW W/NAM. EVERYTHING GOING THERE FOR OUR FIGHTING GUYS, WHICH WE UNDERSTOOD, BUT DIDN'T MAKE ANT EASIER ON US. I'M SURE AND KNOW THAT OTHER UNITS AT THE "ROCK" HAD THE SAME PROBLEM'S. WE ALL KNEW IT WOULD TAKE HARD WORK TO TURN IT AROUND AND STILL STAY COMBAT SHARPE IF CALLED UPON LOOKING AT THE BEAR TO THE EAST. THE BEST COMES OUT DURING TO TOUGH TIMES.WITHIN OUR COMPANY, WE PULLED TOGETHER WHEN NEEDED.WHEN A.T.(TOW),4.2 MORTARS, REDEYE UNIT,AND INF.LINE UNITS HAD TO RUN THEIR DIV UNIT TESTING.WE IN RECON PLT. VOLENTER'D TO FILL IN WHEN THEY WHERE UNDERMANNED. WE LEARNED THEIR MOS WEAPONS,AND TACTICS AND THEM KICK BUTT DURING DIV TESTING.AS A CO.AND BN.,IT BROUGHT US CLOSER TOGETHER,W/GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF EACH OTHERS JOBS&HARDSHIPS.IT MADE OUR RECON PLT. EVEN BETTER,MORE SELF CONFINDANT TO HANDLE ANYTHING IF CALLED UPON.AS TIME WENT ON,THINGS GOT BETTER. THE FUNDS FOR BARRECKS,EQUIPMENT,AND MANPOWER STARTED TO FLOW IN. AFTER 31 MO'S ON THE "ROCK", WE LEFT AND TURNED IT OVER TO THE NEW SPEARHEADS IN BETTER FIGHTING CONDITION.ONLY 1 SCOUT VEH/WAS REDLINED,ALL OTHER RECON RANGER'S WERE READY TO ROLL IF &WHEN CALLED. ALSO READ YOUR LETTER FELLOW "ROCK/SPEARHEAD" STEVEN DUPUY.YUO HAVE NOTHING! TO SAY SORRY! FOR&FOR WHAT YOU SAID. WE UNDERSTAND. SO QUIT KICKING YOURSELF.NO MATTER THE JOB WE HAD IN THOSE TIMES.WE ALL STOOD THE WALL TOGETHER,READY UNDER ANY CONDITION. READY TO WRESTLE THE BEAR,HAVING HIM FEELING THE SHARPE IN OF OUR "SPEARHEAD".TO ALL WHO HAVE SERVED,THANKS. BUT MOST OF ALL, TO THE ONES WHO FELL WEARING OUR DIV.PATCH. THANK YOU FOR WHAT I HAVE.FAMILY,CHILDREN,GRANKIDS AND THIS COUNTRY WE FREELY LIVE IN. ON A PERSONAL NOTE. I WANT TO THANK MY DAD,"POP".WHO I JUST LAIDED TO REST. A PROUD MARINE WHO SERVED 30YRS.WWII,AT G-CANAL, PELELIU,KOREA,AND 2 TOURS OF NAM. GUNNERY SGT. WILLIAM M. DOOLEY JR. THANKS AND GOD BLESS YOU "POP" AND ALL OTHERS UP THERE STANDING THE WALL. SEE YA AT THE GATES. YOUR PROUD SON,MICHAEL.

I saw Rolling Thunder on Saturday night, I thought it was an excellent show. Steve your comments about being understrength were not out of line. When I arrived at The Rock in March of 1984 2/36 and 3/36 Inf. were short an entire company. We were reinforced around May of 84 when 2/22 Inf. of the 4th Inf. Div. Forward was redeployed back to the States from Wiesbaden Air Base. 2/36 and 3/36 each recieved a Co. from that redeployment to bring us up to strength. My mos was a 63T (M113 Mechanic) The maint. platoon was never at full strength. I was an E-2 acting as T.C. with an E-2 driver in our Maint track, our VTR was a PFC driver with an E-2 T.C. and our tool truck had a SP4 driver with our Ssgt. Just about as soon as I got there our 2 E-5's ETS'ed out of the army and they were not replaced with NCO's for about 6 months or so. But we did our jobs to the best of our ability, and with the help of Pres. Reagan, and Pres. G.H.W.Bush, we won The Cold War and The Gulf War,and we will all have done our part. From one 3AD Vet to the rest of you Thanks, for a job well done.

Steve DuPuy....I think you gave a good account of the Division during your time there...the History Channel account was edited heavily, of course...despite all the difficulties, Spearhead acquitted itself well....a testimony to the honor and professionalism of the members....I learned much from the show...and am glad I watched it.

I joined the Marines in 1976 and can tell you some horror stories about being under-equipped, under-strength and short on funds to train. Being a supply guy assigned to a tank battalion, I got to see the sorry state of affairs our stuff was in. We had 17 M60 tanks per company and most were hanger queens, down for parts or stripped to keep the alert company up. Our alert company could never get all of their vehicles moving at the same time unless they were towed. Most of the tanks had two and three man crews instead of the four required. Most NCO slots were held by E-3's and E-4's. I never doubted the Marine Corps could do it's job, I was very proud to be a Marine. I joined the Army in the 80's when all kinds of money came from the Reagan administration. I can say that during my ten years assigned to line units, we never seemed to have enough money for the little things we needed. We never seemed to be able to get good barracks furniture or even upgraded buildings for our single soldiers. I was always assigned to units that spent 6 months or more in the field every year. I was very proud to be assigned to these hard charging units. Being a former Marine, I was always considered arrogant and held very little respect for rear echelon soldiers, this attitude from a supply sgt. I did enjoy the show, I just felt they did not research enough.

"Rolling Thunder" was quite brief on Cold War era,but I was glad the show pointed out the lack of funds and equipment Spearheaders endured. Steve Depuys comments did not seem out of line to me. I suspect most all 3AD units had similiar problems. I recall being ordered to field a "red lined " M-60 tank more than once, often with only a 3 and sometimes 2 man crew. But we were Bandits, and Spearhead!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I felt some what embarrassed at the way my comments were used in Rolling Thunder. I was asked questions for about 20 minutes. The way my reply was spliced together came accross in a different way that what I intended to communicate. I don't know if they spliced together different things I said or just picked out one line. I thought I told them my perspective was narrow and just of the platoon I served in, and might not reflect being accurate of things over all. For example, 1/2 of the M-113's in my platoon where TOW vehicles, the other 1/2 were Dragon. I don't remember us having enough people to even put a driver and vehicle commander in each vehicle that we could get them all out the gate on an alert. I would have assumed the TOW vehicles should have had a driver, commander, gunner, and loader. If this would be true, we were understrenthed substantially. We also had problems with our vehicles from time to time. But I did not mean to imply that the whole division could only get 1/2 of its vehicles to run. Again, my comments were based upon my unit, not the division. A lot of what I said had to do with the amount of training I got to do compared to what others who were there later told me they got to do. For example, I only ever got to shoot one shot with my Dragon, the rest of the time, it was .22 blanks. I don't remember getting to shoot the .50 cal or the M-60 machine gun after I got out of boot camp. Others told me incredible stories about the 80's and the training they had like spending 280+ days in the field. In my year + with CSC 2/32. We did one reforger, one Graf, and we went to Sentelogen once. I believe my field time that year was about 40 days or so. I would assume this had to do with the available money at the time. Again, I want to appologize for the others who were there during the 70's that my comments made all of the rest of you look bad.
