I served at the McNair Kaserne across the street from Michael Baracks 533rd MI. You will not believe what they have done to our Kaserne and the chapel and other facilities. When I saw it, I cried. I was stationed there Oct 1989 - June 1991. I had the best time of my life there. Now 17th is in Kitzingen (Larson Kaserne) and 32nd Sig is at Kelley Baracks in Darmstadt where I am now. I may be able to get pictures of those areas now. The high wall that used to surround Michael Baracks is torn down. There are these two new buildings 2 stories high where the wall stood on the corner. The motorpool is gone. Oh, don't get me started. I miss it all too much! If anyone has photos of McNair, let me know! Email me if you care to talk about the great old days. You should see the wreck it is now!

April 1974 I was serving in the Redeye section with the 3/12 CAV. We were in Graf to support the line troops qualifying there M551 tanks. The Redeye section was pretty much a taxi cab service most of the time. We would drop off and pick up the range control officer, take supplies to the units in the field, and we would follow the tracks down range with the graders when they were doing live fire. We were billeted with the medics during period, and got to know everybody in the medics pretty well. As I stated at frist, it was April and I'm at range 80. They are doing final firing to see if the tanks qualify or not. Everybody that's anybody is up in the tower ...James Schlesinger (sec. of Defence) Gen. Alexander Haig (Div. Commander) the Sec. of the Army (don't remember his name) and our Sqd. Commander LTC. Maluer. The very frist enaggemnt was the stationary truck, the tanks would enage this with the coax machine gun or the .50 cal. I would drive a grading SGT. out (after the tank when down range) so he could count the bullet holes. then back to the tower to wait until the next tank would come up. They were averaging one tank every 45 min.s to an hour. It was pretty cold there! Our SQD. Commander wouldn't let us have any canvas on the jeeps because we HAD to be tactical! So... I was freezing my ass off! After about 3 tanks had gone through, I noticed one of the "cracker box" ambulances had smoke coming out of the heater exhaust pipe. SO... I figured I could crawl inside with my NEW medic buddies and warm up between tank runs. I go over and try to open the door, it was locked, but I hear "who is it?". I said "Hey man it's me Mark, open up!" I heard "He's cool." and they un-lock the door and I start in. I come to a dead stop about half way in, there is a VERY stronge odor of hashish! I say "You guys are crazy! Do you know how's up in that tower!" They just look at me and finally say "Who?" I just look at them a second and back out not saying a word. It was now OK to freeze my ass off in my jeep!!! *G* I relay this story not to downgrade any thing about the Army or the Spearhead! I look back on my Army days with fond memories! But there were problems facing the Army at the time ...Drugs were one of them. By the way... The medics never got caught! *G* A special Hello to all my old Redeye buddies ... LT. Duffy, SSG. I just wanted to say that I am hurt and very P/O about what had happen this past week. God has a way to bring people to their knees, in which he did. The reason I say this is because we have put so many things in front of God, like sports, and the like. We also have taken prayer and "the pledge of allegiance" out of our school, where our youth need it. It seems that every time we get into deep trouble, like this, thats when we look for God. There will be so many sad stories from the acts of war that occurred on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. What an unthinkable loss we have sustained. Being a career firefighter, the loss of over two hundred brother firefighters is felt so deeply and our prayers and thoughts are with these souls and their families.
In addition to the loss of firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel; many military and civilian personnel lost at the Pentagon will take a toll on our emotions. I just spoke with a Lieutenant here on our fire department who informed me of a personal loss for him. His brother-in-law, Lieutenant General Timothy J. Maude, was killed at his desk in the Pentagon attack. Gen Maude was a thirty-two year career soldier and was just 10 months away from a well deserved retirement.
God bless all of these lost public safety personnel, military personnel, and their families and God bless the military personnel who will be undertaking the operations necessary to send the perpetrators and their supporters to their judgement before the Almighty.

I just returned from the WWII Association's annual reunion in Peoria, Illinois. It was great to visit with the "founders" of the division and they were all very hospitable. They turned out almost 400 of their members for the reunion; add to that wives, widows, and guests and they had a huge group!
Steve Depuy and I discussed with them possibilities for our organizations to work together more closely, particularly on reunions. Of course the WWII folks are getting older and I think they could benefit from the efforts of our younger membership. Over the years they have done a terrific job for their membership and their association, but I got a general feeling that it is getting harder for them. At some point, it would be great if we could honor them and take some of the load off of them. We did come away with several membership applications from individuals and hopefully their new board will consider us if and when they start looking around for people to carry on their traditions.

I was one of the 6,800 drafties (US 54-173-755) that made up the 3rd Armor Division in 1955-1956.
In HQ Command Company-I am looking for: 1) Bob Isabell-Birmingham AL banker; 2) Jack Carlson-Austin TX estimator-"the only man that got a hardship discharge in 6 months, while driving a new Buick convertable."
In the 3rd Armor,45 AMB, Dental Section: 1) Hal Pilkington of Colorado; 2) Jack Formick of Harrisburg PA. 3) Orea Chestnut of Bakerfield CA,& 4)the other 20 friends, whose names have slipped away.
At the end of our tour of duty, both Walley Smith and I were working in the dental clinic at Kirch Göns(?).
Prior to coming home, we were returned to Gibbs Kaserne-Frankfort where we "piss-ant" shovels-full of dirt across the road, at some dependent housing area (harshment of the US-troops to the very end).
After service, Walley & I graduated from KCMO dental school in 1961.

I was in "B" company first on track B-32 than on B-36 where I was a RTO for Lt. Harvey. Was later put in the Devy Crockett section and drove track "M-113" HQ-97. I went to the internet to look up some history on Schloss Kaserne in Butzbach. According to what I read it looks like the 3rd AD were the only units to be housed there. The 16th went to Butzbach in Sept.1961 and was stationed at said barracks. This can be verified at http://3dsignalbrigade.hood.army.mil/16thSigBat/index.htm That gives a complete history of the 16th and makes for some interesting reading. I also know that the 2nd Bn. of the 18th Artillary was there at the same time the 16th Sig. was. The 3rd AD was about three miles from Butzbac at Kirch Goins (closest to Butzbach). I don't want to make anyone mad but there were lots of guys just like me that spent a portion of our lives there. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would feel this way.I knew a few of the guys with the 3rd AD and all were really great guys. I have been in touch with some of the men I served with and would like to contact more. Anyone who was part of the 16th, no matter when, please e-mail me. I think you have a fine web site and I will visit often. Note: I was at Butzbach 1962-64 Also it looks like they tore down the old structures...Is Uncle Sam's boys still ther or have the germans taken over? Would like to know. Thanks for letting me visit.

I'm not sure when the 16th moved onto schloss kaserne...they were there when I arrived. The 2nd Bn. of the 18th artillary was also located at that post...plus a medical detachment. The closet the 3rd Arm. Div. was at Kirch Goins about 3 miles from Butzbach. Correction: the 16th moved to butzbach Sept. 1961. This can be verified by going to http://3dsignalbrigade.hood.army.mil/16thSigBat/index.htm....that gives a complete history of the 16th. I loved the 16th and really liked Butzbach. I just hate to see us left out of the picture when presenting the history of schloss kaserne. I'm not trying to make anyone mad. Just giving the facts. Also I was a one termer but still I feel I will always be part of the 16th. I also noticed on the internet that the old barracks have been replaced. Is Uncle Sam still housed there? I wanted to go back one day and see again what it was like. Now...I don't know. Just won't be the same!

I was not with the 3rd AD, I was with the 3/5th Cav when I was with the 9th Infantry Division from 1968-1969. Also, the 3/5th Cav was attached to the brigade I was in when I was with Co C, 1st Bn, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division from 1966-1967.
I am the Webmaster for the 3/5th Cav-Vietnam and just in the last week have found out that the Cav is with the 3rd AD and they participated in Desert Storm. I am looking forward to including data about the 3/5th actions in Desert Storm to our site. We were known as "The Bastard Cav" while in Vietnam because the Cav was all over Vietnam with many units to include Marine units up on the DMZ. I will also include links to you website and please include ours in your site.
I look forward to any future work to let the citizens of the United States what a proud and honorable unit the 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry always been in the United States Army. The preceding statement also includes and 5th Cavalry unit as we fought battles in Vietnam with other 5th Cav units.

In reference to the message left shortly prior to this one, I want to assure everyone that no-one gets peoples e-mail address's from the Association data base. Unfortunately, we can not stop people from going through the guestbook and copying address's. The solution might be to post the address of anyone who does this to you on the guestbook and we can flood that person back with annoying messages ourselves. My father James Albert DeLeo landed on Omaha Beach with the Third Armored Division. He was a member of a Half-Track crew. He was blown up by a morter shell, shortly after, and was shipped home. I do not know his company. He passed away in 1984, and I found your web site, thinking I might find out some information on the unit he served in.
