I had transferred over from D CO, 4/32 Armor after deactivation. I was one of the last A Company 2/32 Armor soldiers prior to deactivation. Captain Benton, thanks for sending me the German Marksman rope I left there without. Because the paperwork was lost, I could not use it. But it's a keepsake, thank you. Best wishes to everyone I served with during my tenure from 1991 to 1992. Sgt "Sal" the supply guy! And Top, that going away plaque with the replica of a .45 Colt? I was pulled out of line in the airport and almost strip searched before they realized it really was a replica! Thanks guys, best of luck to all Spearheaders! One hell of a ride!! Outlaws!

Served as Supply Sergeant for Delta Company up until deactivation. Transferred across post to A CO, 2/32 ARMOR BN for a short period before we got notification for yet another deactivation! Got orders for 10th Mountain Division, 3 days prior to shipping out, branch called. Someone (NCOIC I had served with in the 25th Inf. Div.) pulled strings and had my orders changed to report to DLIFLC (Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center) in Monterey, California. Thought I'd like it. The politics here were a bit too much for me, tried to transfer back to FORSCOM unit, but guess what? Fort Ord was at the time deactivating. Branch also said I was stuck! Nice? OK for the family, but it felt like I was put out to pasture. And the Russian civilians? Don't get me started! Anyway, retired now in Monterey. Dealing with the rolling blackouts, high housing prices and a bunch of phony people. Life is good. Always remembered soldiers from D Company, always a "prost" for our fallen, but not forgotten. You guys were the greatest and I as I look back on it, I am honored to have served with a great unit. My hat is off to all who have serve on the "Rock". VICTORY OR DEATH Red Lions!! Oh, and Top (Parshall), thanks for recruiting Sgt. Heard, the guy is an inspiration! lol

I can remember the bad treatment we received by our OIC. He was in the S-4 shop and thought he was GOD. What a loser. He would make an enlisted man get his chow at TAA Camelot. I can remember how having to get his chow was such a treat. The guys would get his food when the chow hall opened along with their own food. They would set his food out in the open and eat theirs very slowly while shooting the bull with anyone and everyone. After about an hour or more old Mr. perfect would get his chow. Guess what loser, you were not a very good officer and not too many people respected or liked you.

FYI. I was one of the last members of the HHC DISCOM, as well as the 3AD. My title was the Division's Property Book Officer (CW3). I officially closed out, and zero balanced the 3AD's property records. In reviewing the 3AD Web site, I noticed most of the command and staff members names missing. I will be glad to contribute with updating most of the members names that are currently missing from the Web site. Please contact me at the E-mail address listed.

This is for everyone who visits here, and anyone else you know who might be interested. I've started a message forum at the following URL:

It's there for vets like myself to swap stories, look for friends and just "talk shop" or whatever. The name of the forum is the Tiger's Den, but anyone is welcome to come and post, any time.
It hasn't gotten many visitors yet, and I hope whoever sees this will spread the word.

Was also stationed with 2/32 AR from 1981-1985. Visited the "Rock" after retirement in '92 when was still operational. Visited again in Dec.2000. Was saddened by the way the Rock looked now after remembering the friends and good times at the Rock, The Welcome Inn and other towns and villages in the area.

Just came across your web site. My father was a member of one of the 3rd AD infantry units during WWII. I'll have to dig into Dad's old war chest and do some research in order to find out which unit he was assigned to. He didn't talk much about the war but I do recall some of his stories. My father was Henry L. Hibbs Jr. He was from West (By God!) Virginia born May 1920. His friends would have called him Larry, Hank, or Stump (Dad was only 5'4" on a good day!). Anyway, I hope I found the appropriate place to come to for info concerning the 3rd AD. Thanks! Larry Hibbs

An soldier always remembers his 1st unit and 1-48 Inf was mine. I look back on those days with many a fond memory and few regrets. It was a great unit and the soldiers and officers were top rate.

Former commander of Company D, 2/36 Infantry "Rangers" from June 1985 - June 1986. The "Delta Demons" were the finest infantrymen in the battalion. Its First Sergeant was 1SG Leon Fludd. After serving as Giessen MILCOM's Deputy DPCA and subsequently as Asst. S-3 Air of 2/36, I assumed command of D Company from CPT Parsons. CPT Parsons (circa, 1983-1985) commanded the company first as A Company, 2/22 Infantry ("Triple Deuce"), through its reorganization to the H-series TOE and its redesignation as D-2/36. I was succeeded in command by CPT Bradshaw in June 1986.

The dedication of the 3d Armored Division Monument is scheduled for July 4th at 1 PM at Freedom Foundation Park in Valley Forge PA. General Wallace H. Nutting who commanded the 3d Armored Division in the late 70's is scheduled to be the speaker. It would be a great thing to attend if you are able to. Our 1st annual reunion is scheduled for July 25 - 28 in Carlise PA. We have veterans from all era's registered to attend. It should be a great time of interaction with guys from WWII, the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and Desert Storm there. There is still time to register. If you need information about the monument dedication or the reunion, contact me at couline@ptd.net

I have many fond memories of my service in the army with all the friends now so long ago remembered. I shall never forget my very special comrades in arms Don Jolliffe and harry Pettingill. We toured Europe In Pettingill's Mercedes which he bought in Europenear the Altstadt, Roemer. It was a most special time with very special people. God bless you one and all for the cherished moments with you that I relive forever more in my mind: Misery, Hill Horrible Grafenwoer, nights in the rain, Beetle Bailey's hate for me, weekend passes to the great cities of Europe, some still in ruins, the green, green hills of Saxony and Hesse, my love -hate relationship with Germany whose language I taught most of my life at Beverly High School in Mass. near Boston, the Mahleresque sound of the cuckoo in Bad Vilbel, the comraderie of close living quarters never again to be duplicated, and the soaring days of youth. All but a distant memory now sadly, faded and missed. Morituri te salutamus!

This was written from an UK perspective. I've heard it a billion times, but a few weeks ago it seemed fitting for Memorial Day.
Born in 58
(B. Dickinson/ J. Gers)
Born in a mining town in '58. When black and white TV was up to date. And men where still around. Who fought for freedom. Stood their ground and died. That I could be alive and see the damage, that we've managed since. In this septed isle. Is nothing sacred. Just a one square mile.
Justice and Liberty. You can buy what you don't get free. In a world of steel and glass. We bury our past.
On and On. We slept till dawn. When we awoke, we hardly spoke.
My grandfather taught me how to fight. Old fashioned stuff like wrong and right. But all around I see his morals buried in a mess Of money troubles, Born in a mining town in '58. When black and white TV was up to date. And men where still around. Who fought for freedom, stood their ground and died.
Justice and Liberty. You can buy what you don't get free. In a world of steel and glass. We bury our past.
On and On. We slept till dawn. When we awoke, it was, all the same.

How things change! I was with 3AD, specifically 23rd Engineers for almost a decade. I tell people I was raised in Nebraska, but I grew up in the Army. Now I'm a city council member & an officer in our local American Legion Post. About a month ago I drove to Fort Rucker, Al, from Belle Plaine, MN. There I picked up a retired UH-1H Huey for display at our Veterans Memorial Park. We're currently restoring it (minus engine) for display. If there are any Spearhead Vets in the area, I'd like to invite you to our dedication. It will probably be sometime in September. E-mail me your address' & i'll keep yu posted. Had a lot of good times and bad & saw a bunch of Bravo Sierra while in, but I'm still quite proud to have served with the best. SPEARHEAD !!!

I found your site by doing a search for the div. I was curious about your div. involvment in the Battle of the Bulge after reading "STERPIGNY AND CHERAIN,BELGIUM - January 1945, By S/Sgt Jim Cullen 2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, "E"Company, 36th Armored Infantry. In the article excerpts are taken from the After Action Reports produced by Haynes Dugan on the History of the 36th Armored Infantry Regt. 3rd Armored Division. Following each excerpt is S/Sgt. Cullen's recollection of the action of the 2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, "E" Company, 36th Armored Infantry during each time period. S/Sgt. Cullen's article was of great interest to me. My father M/Sgt. Howard Anthony [KIA 1-16-45] was w/ the 83rd's 330 Inf @ Stirpigny with your Div. This is the first time I have been able to find out anything about Stirpigny. I thought I had misunderstood the name because nobody knew of it and I couldn't find it on any maps. I never knew my father [I was 2 yrs old when he died] and have pretty much given up the hope of ever finding anyone who actually knew him. I would, however, greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who can tell me about this battle, where I can learn anything about Stirpigny, or anything else regarding the 83rd's involvment w/ your div. during Dec/Jan of 45. I can be reached @ P.O. Box 653, Lewes, DE 19958 or by e-mail at either hra@dmv.com or richardanthony@justice.com In advance, thank you for taking the time to read this & thank you for what you did during WW II.

Hi Spearheaders, I got this one from a chat friend, but got to it too late to post for Memorial Day, and I hope that all of out vet friends and families enjoy it. Thanks for a great site to Kevin and the staff and I will be checking thru from time to time as my schedule permits. Take Care Everyone, and GOD Bless !!!! S P E A R H E A D !!!!!!!!!!!!Remember them this Memorial Day May 28th
THE THINGS THEY CARRIED:
They carried P-38 can openers and heat tabs, watches and dog tags, insect repellent, gum, cigarettes, Zippo lighters, salt tablets, compress bandages, ponchos, Kool-Aid, two or three canteens of water, iodine tablets, sterno, LRRP- rations, and C-rations stuffed in socks. They carried standard fatigues, jungle boots, bush hats, flak jackets, and steel pots. They carried the M-16 assault rifle. They carried trip flares and Claymore mines, machine guns, the M-70 grenade launcher, M-14's, CAR-15's, Stoners, Swedish K's, 66mm Laws, shotguns, .45 caliber pistols, silencers, the sound of bullets, rockets, and choppers, and sometimes the sound of silence. They carried C-4 plastic explosives, an assortment of hand grenades, PRC-25 radios, knives and machetes. Some carried napalm, CBU's, and large bombs; some risked their lives to rescue others. Some escaped the fear, but dealt with the death and damage. Some made very hard decisions, and some just tried to survive. They carried malaria, dysentery, ringworms, and leaches. They carried the land itself as it hardened on their boots. They carried stationery, pencils, and pictures of their loved ones - real and imagined. They carried love for people in the real world, and love for one another. And sometimes they disguised that love: "Don't mean nothin'!" They carried memories! For the most part, they carried themselves with poise and a kind of dignity. Now and then, there were times when panic set in, and people squealed, or wanted to, but couldn't; when they twitched and made moaning sounds and covered their heads and said "Dear God", and hugged the earth and fired their weapons blindly, and cringed and begged for the noise to stop, and went wild and made stupid promises to themselves and God and their parents, hoping not to die. They carried the traditions of the United States military, and memories and images of those who served before them. They carried grief, terror, longing, and their reputations. They carried the soldier's greatest fear: the embarrassment of dishonor. They crawled into tunnels, walked point, and advanced under fire, so as not to die of embarrassment. They were afraid of dying, but too afraid to show it. They carried the emotional baggage of men and women who might die at any moment. They carried the weight of the world, and the weight of every free citizen of America.

Wishing to all veterans a Happy Memorial Day!!, I was the Brigade Chaplain Assistant of the 1st Brigade HHC,3rd Armored Division during the Gulf War. My chaplain was Brigade Chaplain Maj. N. Robinson (By the way they need to correct the ruster on the 1st Brigade, 3AD:they have Chaplain Robinson as a CPT instead of MAJ). I would like to say hello to my fellow spearhead veterans and also to my units chaplains and chaplain assistants. Email me if any of you experiencing a what they called Gulf War Syndrome.

Served proudly for 2 1/2 years. Most notably under the direction of 1SG John Green, a 3 tour Vietman veteran who inspired me more than anybody else to "Be all that I could be" as the old motto went, through example. He was tough but fair. Primarily trained in live fire FTXs at Graffenwoer and AF guard duty.

“And once you’re gone, you can never go back….” -Neil Young
I was at the ‘Rock’ last year; it was a short trip of about twenty minutes in and out to take a quick look and a few pictures courtesy of a sympathetic security guard. This time it was different. Although I had official permission for a one-day visit, in reality I made it into two days. I explored every nook and cranny that I could get access to. Some things I could remember as clearly as if it was yesterday and others were a little bit more hazy because they had been constructed after my time (1975-78). I went back this time to seek out the ghosts of my youth. To exorcise some of those demons that have inhabited my dreams and to shake them loose. I had no idea really what was left, but I pictured things pretty much the same as I had left them, plus or minus twenty some odd years ago. The trees would be larger and the weeds would be higher than last year but otherwise it would be the same as it always was….
How wrong I was. With the exception of the first row of barracks (that is to say the ‘old’ 3/36 down to the ‘old’ 2/36) everything else behind that row was either in a partial state of demolishment or stripped of all useful bits and pieces and left to whatever fate is left for it. And when I say stripped, I mean stripped bare. Bits and pieces of whatever that could not be reused are left where the fell. Gapping holes show where electrical boxes once were once mounted. The windows go first; after all they are the newest parts and perhaps fetch a few more marks on the resale market because of their relative newness. The eastern European’s are big buyers of the flotsam of used building parts. Then the plumbing fixtures, including for some really unknown bizarre reason the toilet stalls. I can’t picture a big market for used toilet stalls but who knows. And lastly all the electrical stuff, which entails pulling the wiring from the walls and ripping all the fixtures from the ceilings.
I really can’t say how ‘Uncle’ left the place because I wasn’t there. What he left or how much was stripped when the US locked the gate for the last time I can only guess. But, I can imagine it was like most things in the green machine. Clean the billets up for the new tenets. Leave them the way you found them. I found keys in some of the doors of barracks that were open, not the front doors mind you, but, the indivdual doors of the barracks rooms themselves. Sometimes one key and other times sets of four or more keys. These sets of keys tell me that these small, empty rooms were once the home up to four GI’s. Four lockers, two sets of ‘bunk’ beds and one desk with chair. Not really a lot of room but that was before the concept of ‘personal space’ had been thought of.
I took a cab from my hotel in Butzbach and when I told the driver I wanted to go to Ayers Kaserne he smiled. It had been a few years since anyone had asked to go there, let alone an American and the smile was for things past. Because when you think about it, the cab drivers probably had more contact with the GI’s than anyone else. Good and bad. Those wonderful payday Friday nights when you had money to burn and a thirst to quench. Standing out at the taxi stand, waiting you’re turn for the ride into Butzbach and a quick drink before the train to Frankfurt. And those returns to the ‘Rock’, where one was lucky enough to get a cab (or depending on your condition even FIND one) and didn’t mind splitting the fare with strangers if it meant that you would be soon back to your barracks and bed.
I got out of the cab at the main gate like I had so many times before. The UP shack was as it always was. I was pretty sure I wouldn’t have to have a strip search this time. It was a well-known fact when I was on the ‘Rock’ that the UP’s (Unit Police) were in the Dope business, big time. If they found dope on you they may or may not turn you in but the dope always disappeared. I can recall one fellow that came from the UP’s to our CSC’s AT section. On his way out; chapter something or other. He was one of the most ‘strac’ individuals I had ever seen and the biggest junkie as well. That was the ‘Rock’ though, you came in a cherry and either walked out or were carried.
The guard had me sign in and that was that. I was on my own. I went up the main road to Battalion Headquarters (3/36) because that was the first place and the last place I was when I was on the ‘Rock’. The driver from brigade picked me up there for the trip to Rhine Mien and the trip home so I figured it was fitting for me to begin there. The doors are gone and the widows too of course. The rooms are bare of all things Army. There are no signs that this was any kind of headquarters. A black pool of water lies dried in front of the radiators. They burst probably the first winter after the ‘Rock’ was closed. I later found out that the entire ‘heating’ plant ended up in Poland, but nobody knows how. I walked further up the road to Brigade Headquarters to check it out because during my entire time on the ‘Rock’ I had never been inside. Mere mortals and enlisted just did not walk into Brigade HQ without a valid reason and I never had one.
It too had been stripped and bits of the ceiling tiles crunched under my feet as I walked through the building on the carpeted floors stained now with the winters of days past. It was a breezy day and the wind kinda found its own way in and out of the building making noises while it passed through. I looked out the front and noticed the flagpole had been cut down, in fact removed from the base it had stood for all those years. Gone was the brass ball from the top (an LT had got me with a question during guard parade for the super numerary; “What is a truck?” It turns out that is what the ball at the top of the flagpole is called and legend has it that inside is a .45 round for the guy who burns the colors, you fill in the blanks) and the two flanking pieces that prevented the flag from ever touching foreign soil. Must be a heavy re-sale market for used flagpoles somewhere.
I made my way out to the back and to the PX. Damn, that was the place. Everything that you could possible want was there. Looking back though it came as no surprise that we all dressed the same way off duty; we all bought our stuff from the same place. Just about everyone I served with (Enlisted) had to leave Germany with a stereo set up. The bigger the better, quad, reel to reel and floor speakers. It was battle of the bands sometimes in the billets. Rock vs. Soul vs. Country Western all at once. As I walked through in what was left of the PX it was hard to remember what went where. The support columns for the building still had the mirrors pasted all around its circumference as if to give even more space. Everything here too had been stripped if it had any value. The beauty shop was empty and dark as I made my way to what was the barbershop. I remember the lunchtime haircuts the most. Those times I was ‘advised’ to get a cut during morning formation. I really dreaded the older German barbers at lunch time they always had beer breath and were a little ‘shaky’ when using the straight razors on the back of your neck. It’s all gone now. If you had never been there when it was running, well, you wouldn’t have a clue what is once was. The bookstore’s glass doors were shattered. One of my section Sgt’s wife’s worked there. It made buying certain ‘adult’ reading materials an exercise in creative speech making; the old ‘ah yes the really good articles’ lie. The snack bar was empty. Just counters and that was it. The phrase “I’ll buy, you fly” echoed in my brain as I recalled those snack bar runs from the motor pool and from the billets. The only place in a ten square mile area to get a decent grilled cheese sandwich. I even heard that it became a Burger King in the ‘80’s. The mini market was in the same building. The memories came thudding back with every step. Ration cards; clipped to buy individual packs of smokes. Buying odds and ends to help spice up the dull C Ration diets when going to the field for weeks on end, buying cleaning supplies and shoe polish.
I walked out the rear of the snack bar and checked the two billets to the rear. In my time I believed they housed D-122 Maint. and the 503rd MP Company. As stated before they had been stripped, even the paneling from the day rooms. I could never figure out why they were called that, nobody could ever go in them during the day. The murals that we painted by some unknown GI artist were once more visible to the Germans who had stripped the paneling. What did they think when they saw them? I was really starting to feel like some sort of archeologist who was exploring the ruins of some lost civilization. But I knew what went into the murals because every unit had an ‘artist’ who did one. It was a thing called unit pride that motivated them to do it.
I next went and checked out the gym. The fine parquet floors rolled in half waves, wood swelled from the leaking roof. I remember working out there a few times. There seemed to be a never-ending basket ball game with the ‘shirts’ against the ‘skins’. The hoops are gone now. It really seemed a shame to let the floor go to pot like that. But governments rarely care about little things like what to do with things like old Army bases, they would rather they just rot away.
The post theater was my next stop. Damn I had some really good times there. It was a place to escape for a while. To get lost in a movie. Of course, it was hard to quietly sit with so many guys without some noise or guys trying to shout to the actors on screen about hidden dangers, “Man, look out she’s got a gun” as if the actors could hear them. Most of the rows of seats are still there, but the screen has been torn down and nothing remains of the snack bar or projection booth. I remember the battalion meetings there when the COL would walk down the aisles while we stood at attention. “SEATS” and the briefing or de-briefing would begin. I also remember seeing the movie ‘Roots’ as a battalion for ‘race relations’ and wondering why all the black guys were so pissed off after. Nothing changed for me because of watching a movie, hell; my people came over in 1918! The newer movies were always a little late in coming to the ‘Rock’ but never showed to an empty house.
The fire station was in really good shape but still showed signs of party use by the volunteer firemen that now use the billets of the ‘Rock’ for rescue training. Although it looked more like ‘combat in cities’ training to me. Great holes punched through the walls and ditches dug along the sides of buildings where Brigade troops were once housed. The education buildings were all new GI’s had to take ‘head start’ classes are empty. Really empty. The class six store where as an eighteen year old I could buy what I could not in my home state was empty. Ow, how many hangovers did that place cause? I was in the past, but surrounded by the present. Things change after so many years but they are the same in your memories and when you see them again you get overwhelmed by the events that took place so long ago. I remember ‘this and that’ …I can’t forget (nor do I want to). As I walked past the place that I knew as the ‘rod and bottle’ club I remember an E-6 that took me for my first ‘liquid’ lunch. It was allowed the to have two beers for lunch. I say allowed but unknown to us mere private types. And judging from the crowd there quite popular. But like most ‘fun’ things it to disappeared. New commander; new rules. Now it is just an empty building with not even a sign out front to say what it once was.
The ‘newest’ building on the ‘Rock’ was the 2/3 FA billets. It was also the only nearly intact barracks building left. The only things that had been ‘recycled’ were some of the built in wooden wall lockers. It was a building built in the ‘new’ Army style. Two or three man rooms with private shower and toilet. Cable TV and phone connections, built in wall lockers and TA-50 lockers. Hell, if I had these kinds of accommodations I never would have left! I lived out of a TA-50 wall locker with three shelves for the first nine months I was on the ‘Rock’ until a proper metal one could be ‘requisitioned’. We lived in four man rooms that held five but seemed like they should’ve been two man rooms. The floors still had that GI shine and it smelled like well, GI. It’s a smell that says soap and shoe polish. The BOQ’s on the other hand smelled completely different, kinda like cologne and shampoo. OD dust bunnies were on the floors in the rooms and it seemed as if everyone had just left. This place had been locked up tight and even the smells couldn’t get out. Maybe they will use this building for something, I hope so. Maybe that’s what is wrong, this whole place looks like they will strip it down and either bulldoze it or just let it rot away. And that seems wrong to me. I guess because it was such a major part of my life that I want it to remain as it was, constant, to serve as a reminder to me that I was there, that what happened did happen and not just to myself but to a lot of guys just like me. Collective experience.
The next stop was the Library /Rec center. The library was a pretty quiet place to go in that place of noise. It seemed as if I was the only one in my whole company who even knew it existed. It was as a result an excellent place to ‘ghost’. Funny it doesn’t even seem larger now empty, but, nor does give any idea what it was. The reality was the Rec Center was a first stop for all ‘cruits’ as in Recruit (or the more impersonal FNG). It was where the bus from the replacement depot left us before we found out where and which unit would get us. I remember seeing boots hanging from the power lines and wondering if it was a prank, not realizing that it was a sign of closure. Another short timer gone home. Now it is just another empty building.
What I knew as 2/36 Inf and 2/32 ARMOR were pretty much the same shape as the other buildings, the exception was that the row facing the main road was ‘intact’ window wise but basically stripped inside, they buildings facing the parade field had had their windows removed. All the buildings had the same feature on the inside. Namely, the stairwells had been painted over and over by so much paint that all I could think of was the old Army saying “if it don’t move paint it; if it does move salute it”. They all were thick with coats of paint. And they were all the same in that Army way of standardization so that they could only be the same. Only the people made them different. The messhalls had been stripped bare of any or all things deemed worthwhile. I saw one dishwashing machine that looked as if it simply would not be removed and what was left was still bolted to the floor and wall at an angle that suggested brute force was not enough to convince it to leave. Its funny about the buildings that still had windows, once inside the only real difference was the double pane windows. The good old inefficient steam radiators where still there. I remember being extremely lucky to get more than just ‘warm’ in my third floor room in the winter. I thought that the big renovation program in the ‘80’s had done more to the buildings than just the windows and Messhall roofs. It’s surprising the linoleum floors have survived so many years of buffing and stripping, and in the many barracks I visited many still had that same Johnson Wax shine on the floors.
The only barracks I couldn’t get into was my old HHC and my own CSC 3/36. They were locked up tight and from looking in the window they looked untouched. The other buildings in the old 3/36 however have suffered the same fate as most of the rest of the ‘Rock’; neglect kills, just not as quickly as demolition. The bowling alley is a refugee clothing collection point and the EM club is falling apart on one side from rot. The chapel is locked but otherwise untouched, perhaps it was just me but maybe considering Germany’s not to distant past a house of worship is better left alone.
I’ll send what pictures I have. Use what you want and save the others for some night when you want to take a walk down memory lane. You may not recognize some places in the pictures but others you cant forget. Perhaps you will meet a ghost of your own creation, perhaps not. I’m glad I went; I don’t think I would go back though. To see it as anything less than it was or what it is now is not very easy and the purity of memories does not have much to do with reality, so I think I’ve said goodbye for the last time…. Glad I'm still around. I'm now 93. I was older than my company commander and my general. I went in under Bradley, then was under the command of General Rose. I had a lot of respect for General Rose. He was the only one who had any guts. There is a hospital (in Nebraska?) named after him.

I served with the 16th Signal Battalion stationed at Schloss Kaserne, Butzbach from August 1961 through August 1962. The 16th SB was rapidly redeployed from Ft Huachuca, AZ to Germany in August 1961 in response to the "second Berlin crisis" I am proud to have served with a unit indirectly associated with the 3AD.

Greetings fellow Spearheader's!
This site is allways worth a visit, brings back all those memories! Cold War, Border Patrol in Fulda with CPT Schmalzel, (OP Alpha is a Museum) Graff, Sleeth, NORM, Berry and all the other`s, we cannot ever forget what we did and why we did it! My best wishes go out to all the Spearheaders who never returned from the Battle Field, Graff, Hoenfels or the Gulf. Just felt like saying that.
Warm Regards,
Steven E. Kuhn
