I have yet to be in a unit as hard core as this particular company. My time in the 3AD was and still is the most satisfying of my more than 18 year career to date. The men I served with have gone on and distinguished themselves often. It is great to see the number still around and serving in greater positions of resposibility. Good to see newly selected sergeants major John Fortune and James Kennedy. Congratulations!

While I'm here if anyone knows the whereabouts of Sgt. Jerry Rice or has an email address for him I would sure appreciate it. Or even an home address of where ever it is he lives. 3AD was the best Unit that I ever had the privilage of serving with. And even though I wasn't with them in Desert Storm I want to say that they did a damn great job!!! I'll try to add more comments later on. All you 3AD past and present take care.

I served with the 4/7 Cav during Desert Storm and stayed with the unit long enough to make the transition to 1/1 Cav and then ETS in 1993. Never before or since have I had the honor of serving with a better group of soldiers and patriots. It may have been a mere 100 hour War to some but it was long enough to make heroes of a few young men. SGT Gentry and SGT Kutz thank you and we'll see you at Fidler's Green. Garry Owen!

I served on 'the Rock' from '72 - '74. I hated it when I was there, but now I sort of miss it. It seems as if we spent as much time in the field as washing down the motorpool, anyway. Thanks for the photos -- they brought back fond memories.

Drake-Edwards was being remodeled while I was there (71-73). For awhile I lived at Drake, the office moved around as the place was being worked on. Administrative Machine Branch offices moved from the Admin building to the NCO club, to the gym, and finally to an old stable on Edwards. What was the name of the resturant across the street from the Edwards main gate?

The URL is http://pub20.ezboard.com/bmenofwar and the forum is called the Tigers'Den. If you'd like to put in a link to the page, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

To all you tiger battalion and pickle battalion guys out there, I found a couple of tiger battalion crests and 4 pickle battalion crests a few months ago. A guy just bought one of the tigers tonight and I have a few of the pickles left. They are not easy to find and I have no idea if I will ever have any again. First come first serve. Go to the store and go to the crest section to check them out. They must be ordered from me via e-mail contact as I must verify I still have them. Many other units are in stock. I have a WWII pinback 33d Armor and 82d Field Artillery and many others as well.

I was the Brigade Cmdrs. driver for 2d Bde. I went through three of them. Colonels Dillion Snell, Hugh J. Bartley, Samuel Smithers. Col. Bartley was the best by far. I had a great time. After an 11 year break in service I joined The MOARNG and have been back to Germany twice. I'm retiring as the1SG of a Combat Engineering Co. after 22 years. I't been quite a rid.

Hoping to hear from some old friends:Matt McGuire, Reggie Allen, Steen, McCarley, Hood, Phelps, Hooge, too many names to type, any FISTer who was around for our 6 months in the sandbox, under the nice black rain of the oil fires, the scorpion-spider-scud beetle fights in the middle of nowhere.

Also would be nice to hear from any of the tankers/grunts we partied with in Friedberg(Ray Barracks, bitte!) or that we backed up with heavy firepower in Saddamland. (sidenote: Mike Miller, de la rouge, and I transfered over to 82nd Airborne Ft. Bragg but haven't heard from either of them in years.) Thunder!

The following is an e-mail I received from Aberdeen Proving Grounds as to our reunion. It sounds like a place of great interest to veterans of all era's. This is one of the day trips planned at our reunion this summer. Check out details in the reunion section

Dear Mr. Depuy:

APG’s U.S. Army Ordnance Museum boasts a large collection of historically significant materiel, including a 25-acre tank and artillery park that may be of interest to you and your group. The museum is open on Mondays from noon until 4:45 p.m., and Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 :45 p.m., but is closed on national holidays except Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. The museum offers a self-guided tour, and admission is free. From Interstate 95, APG is located off of Exit 85. For more information about the U.S. Army Ordnance Museum, visit their website at www.goordnance.apg.army.mil/odmuseum.htm. If I can be of further assistance, please contact me at www.lwitkow.apg.army.mil

Thank you for your interest in Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Hi all, Just wanted to say thanks for all the emails I've gotten concerning my postings. Just got my newsletter and although I can't attend it did get me thinking.... What if someone brought a PC and a scanner? They must be lots of guys that don't have access to a scanner but yet have beaucoup pictures of their time in the 3AD that they would like to share with other vets that will be attending the reunion and those like me who can't be there. Just an idea... Later, Kirk 'Cal' Callesen CSC 3/36 Inf. Recon Plt. 1975-78 Scouts Out!

That will be available as well as digital photography too. Thanks for the suggestion Kirk - Steve

Have gotten some emails and calls from the first time I signed in. Just got off the phone with Sgt. Goodwin. He was the gunner in HQ-26 with Sgt. Stephens when they got hit the night of the 26th. He's doing really well. He's in the guestbook around Feb. 6th.

Am putting a promo for my book in here. The story about HQ-26 is in there; all kinds of stuff about the Rock, Grafenwoer, Hoenfels, deployment, the war and after. Hope nobody thinks I'm overdoing it here, but hey, it's a hell of a book!

"...Coming to the top of the low hill that lay at our front all that afternoon, the batle lay before us. A long low basin stretched into the distance with burning vehicles smoldering at innumerable places. In my night vision goggles streaking shafts of light slammed into their targets; white fireballs exploded at the end of their laser beam straightness. The streaks of seeming laser light happened in rapid succession, one after another after another. The tracer-like M1A1 sabot rounds piercing the atmosphere, accentuated by my infrared night vision, created a horrific scene of fire in the valley. As artillery boomed constantly somehwere very near, the steadily increasing noise of the battle seemed to reach a crescendo. The incredible succession of rapid tank fire roared up at us like waves.

I looked over at Sergeant T as he held a lit cigarette under his poncho. Neither of us spoke. I followed the vehicle at my front, into the valley.

"Faraway Thunder: A Journey through Army Life & the Gulf War", is a common soldier's story. Intensely personal, it tells the story of modern army life and war in the Persian Gulf. From the recruiter's office to the battlefield, it is a journey into the thoughts and observations of one soldier as he sees and feels war, and the aftermath of war.

Gwen Haugen, News Record, writes: "The book held so much more than an accounting of factual events; it took us into the mind of a young man who struggled with devotion to duty and the suffering which results from waging war..."

Haugen continues: "He is skillful in his use of conversation. Sentences are short, in the language which one would expect from men dealing with life choices and life threatening situations...In my opinion, Jones is a master of suspense."

Published by Vista Publishing, the book is available at www.seekbooks.com (Type in faraway thunder in the title search at the top of the sight). Or go to www.amazon.com (In the search box go to books, then type in faraway thunder). You can also visit the website listed or drop the author an email.

Cal Callesen, you were there 12 years after I left there, Ayers Kaserne. I didn't know it as the Rock at the time, (1960),I guess it got that moniker later. Your comment of 26 Jan 01, took me back, quite vividly, to those days I spent there. The Graf trips, Fulda, Hoensfels, etc. I was reminded of the time I came back, after a night on the town, drunk as a skunk, and ran through the main gate, hoping to get past the MP's cause I didn't have a pass. I got caught on the parade field and spent the night in the brig, there by the main gate. My barracks were to the right as you come in from the main gate, all the way down the street, second from the end. HH co 2ARB 36th Inf. Just to the right of the EM club was a hole in the fence, as I remember. You gave me a taste of what it's like now. Thank you, for the memories.

Hello to all Spearheaders, I've started a website that pays homage to the "Iron Dukes" 2/67 Armor Battalion. I hope that all past and present soliders will vist and leave their comments. I could not have established the site without the help of Kevin Colson, the 67th Armor webmaster for the 3rd.org page. Thank you Kevin. I'm still looking for soliders that served in 2/67 in D co. 1991-1994. Thanks again to 3rd AD Association Veterans. IRON DUKES ARE WINNERS!

Just happened upon the website and was fascinated with the amount of information available. I think I learned more about the unit in a few minutes than I learned or knew during the time that I was in the unit. Of course, we were pretty busy during that period and in the field a great deal.

Interested in hearing from anyone serving in Gelnhausen during my term. I have been fortunate enough to have visited Gelnhausen on several occasions over the past 35 years - was able to photograph and stand in front of B company barracks just a couple of years ago. It gives you a real rush to be there and recall the years spent. A few highlights; alerts at all hours, driving my personnel carrier 8A, Graf and Hoelfels, Maxims bar, etc.

We ran a consoidated mess for units on Francoise, and consolidated maintenance for the Battalion. We trained often at Graf including a January in GP medium tents at Camp Kasserine. Does anyone recall the “Walking the Nukes” scenario in the Fulda Gap? I vaguely recall the following from 48th Infantry Battalion staff exercises. As Warsaw Pact(WP)/Soviet forces cross the East German Border a “Forward Edge of the Battle Area” (FEBA) establishes itself (well, it sounds like a practical concept anyway). At some point in the scenario a decision is made to “go nuclear” i.e., due to imminent threat of significant breaching or envelopment of 3AD defending forces. I vaguely recall three levels of nuclear response, the net effect of which was to “walk” the nukes from initial strikes in WP rear areas, on forward to near the FEBA. The first level (i.e., deepest) strikes were to be accomplished by tactical battlefield missiles. The intermediate level or next stage of the forward walk of the nukes was to be accomplished by 155mm nuclear capable field artillery. The last stage of walking the nukes to near the FEBA was to be accomplished by Davy Crocketts mounted on infantry jeeps. On the prospect of such firing, it was tongue-in-cheek considered good form to have a really speedy jeep. For whatever reason, I recall the following 2 place names from the acetate overlay maps at Battalion Headquarters regarding Walking the Nukes exercises: Hunfeld & Neuhof. This is the sometimes on middle of the night radio watch, acting Useful Duck Oscar, out.

Isn't it odd how we in 2nd brigade, turned in everything we brought with us? Remember the piles of GP Larges/Mediums/Smalls? Remember smashing the gunners quadrants just do they were declared "unserviceable", and putting them into the stack with the rest of the other thousands?

Hey Desert Storm vets. I noticed in the DOD memo on Khamisayah that personnel were missed and whole units may have been missed. It looks as if the unit locations were based on 'pure' organization rather than task force or that they have the wrong Companies aligned into task forces. Anyone with data should respond to the address in the letters from DOD with that data. Remember to hold your originals! Black Knights

Well the guestbook has been removed from the 3AD Museum site..of course this is another (Name Removed)  move, since he runs that site, BUT HE DOESN'T RUN NOT THIS ONE.. To bad that the guestbook was removed. He states that it due to abuse..then why hasn't this site been abused ? What is abuse to one is not to another. The guestbook should be open to all comments, good or bad.

We all have our own opinions but we do not want to start name calling. Guestbook Manager. Kevin

Okinawa was my first duty assignment after enlisting with the US Army. I worked in the printing end of the operations doing propaganda leaflets which were air lifted and dropped over Viet Nam. Our presses where running around the clock to get this stuff out. From what I have been told by the guys over in Nam in the front lines that these leaflets were used as sanitary paper because most of the vietnamese people could not read. Just another form of waste wouldn't you say? Had a good time on my off duty time in which I saw some very interesting things. Only remember a few of the names I worked with. Mike Peters which does a cartoon strip for a major newspaper. There was a Sgt.Cain, Sgt. Gibbs, Sp4 Little. If there are any of you that remember these years in Okinawa let me hear from you.

Amazing how fast new entries appear in the log. I have had no luck finding anyone from Bravo, but it has been a few years. Any of you out there? I see Sonderson and Autry listed in the Desert Storm roster. What about Sappington, Renfroe, Stoltz, Mansfield, Wilcox and the rest of you HET drivers? Strange how time makes the memories of the time we spent there better. I don't miss first call formations in the rain a bit. I'd really like to hear from any of you, 122nd MSB or otherwise, who were at Drake/Edwards then.

Original assigned to A trp. by an error reading my MOS. Put on the PLT Sgt. track OJT (A15) There I meet one of my best friends ...SP/4 Dave "Barney" Bartnez. He showed me alot! About 3 months later the REDEYE section in HHT was going thru a DIV. REDEYE test. They were short of people, and by accident they heard of me. I was "loaned" to HHT just for the test. Dec. 7th 1973 we took the Div. test and got No.1 in DIV. and My team was No.1 (Sgt. Dave "MO" Molin & myself) They never let me go back! *G* There I meet another bunch of great guys! John Cartwright, Phillip Lovely, Dave Anderson, Dave Molin, Otis Matthews, LT. Duffy, "Buzzard", and all the others! Was one of the best times of my life! But it was one of the saddest too. June 74 I was going home on leave. Barney was E.T.S.ing out. I joked "I'd beat him home"! And he'd joke "Yeah...But you got to come back"! A month later I was walking thru the gate, and an SP I knew asking if I just got off leave? I don't know what gave it away? My new suit or a 3 week old beard!?? *G* He turns serious, and asked if I knew about Barney? I said Yeah I knew he E.T.S. out. He then says "But Barney drown 2 weeks later"! I didn't want to believe it! But 2 days later the 1st PLT Sgt. from A trp. stop me for a donation for flowers for Barney's faimly! Barney is still with me to this day! As are all of you! Funny there were times I hated it there! But at this time in my life I wish I was back! I'm moving soon to Idaho (3/01) and will re-register again with new e-mail address, BUT would love to hear of any of the ole" gang!!! Remember "If you ain't cold, wet,& hungry, you ain't CAV!" *L*

I often wonder what became of all my buddies...:) It has been so long i can't remember what company i was in, but was in Frankfurt 4 yrs ago and had the chance to walk through the entire place as some great memories flowed back, some of which were burried until i was actually there.... I now Live in Manhattan, New York City. All the best to everyone! Stan

Massachusetts Author Bares His Soul in Memoir on Operation Desert Storm, The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy

Massachusetts’ native, Steven Manchester, is proud to announce the release of his new book, The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy- just in time for the 10 year anniversary of Operation Desert Storm.

Based on his trying experiences during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, Manchester graphically details life as a U.S. Army M.P. in Iraq. “My perspective of the Gulf War was very different from the sanitized version CNN opted to show,” said Manchester, “up close…we witnessed many children slaughtered by land mines. I’ve always felt people should know how it really was!” Such brutal depictions in this memoir are evidence of the hefty costs associated with freedom and the price paid to heal America from the poltergeist of Vietnam.

Packed with raw emotion, The Unexpected Storm is Manchester’s personal account of his experiences before, during and after the 100 hours of ground fighting in the Middle East. It is a compelling tale of friends made and lost, battles waged on an internal front, and promises broken. Though most soldiers returned home- visibly whole, what they brought with them as a result of experimental vaccines, radioactive depleted uranium and pent-up rage is just beginning to surface. “It was a just cause,” Manchester confirmed, “babies were being tossed from hospital incubators in Kuwait. My only problem is the way our own government has chosen to complete the deal...more treatment is needed!”

Though the book bravely delves into the controversial issue of the Persian Gulf Syndrome, or “Mystery Illness,” Manchester takes the concept of war to a deeply inward and higher level. “Not all war wounds are visible, nor are they all suffered on the battlefield,” said Manchester, “War is a state of mind and a man cannot live in two worlds at one time…eventually, there has to be a truce.”

Steven Manchester is the author of three books of poetry, two novels, and two screenplays, both of which were produced as independent films by Rising Tide Entertainment, Inc. To view these: www.booksmoviesscreenplays.com Under the pen name Steven Herberts, he is also the author of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue- a tour of modern-day prisons through the eyes of a Correction Officer.

Published by Hellgate Press, The Unexpected Storm is available on-line, in all major bookstores (Jan. 2001) or directly from the publisher by calling 1-800-228-2275.
