I had a good time at Ayers and made a lot of good friends and saw a lot of good soldiering. This was my 2nd tour in Germany. 2/36Th. Inf. Ranger Bn. on the Rock brings back a lot of memories. My 1st tour was with 1/8th Inf. in Crailshim down south. This is the area I was able to follow a SMLM unit in a restricted area. I was able to give all the Info. to S-2 intel. and the SMLM unit was detained. What a rush that was. Is the Badar Mainhuf group still acting up in Germany? They caused a few problems when I was stationed in the F.R.G . I hope to be able to hook-up with some of the soldiers I knew on the "Rock", You all take care and God Bless!

Hope all Spearheaders had a wonderful Christmas and wishing all the best in the coming New Year. Since my first message in the guestbook almost two years ago, I have only seem one Spearheader that served in the 503d Admin. Co. during my time in the Division. I called several Spearheaders on Christmas Day that I've stayed in touch with since 1968. Have lost touch with many others because addresses and phone numbers have changed. Anyone that remembers serving with me, please email me. It's wonderful talking about old times and what's happened in our life since. have changed

Since a fellow scout confessed to a daring exploit, I guess the time has come to do likewise. Anyone in HHC 2/36 who remembers the bogus DF's that kept appearing in the Battalion and Company Bulliten boards, some of which sent the BN CO and Company CO into a rage, well, It was ME!!!! Had lots of fun with that until 1SG Cue figgured out who the smartass was. He was cool though. Best First Sergeant I ever had. Scouts out, Rangers may lead the way, but the Scouts lead the Rangers.

I served in the S2 of 4-32 Armor (Red Lions). Truly one of the most challenging parts of my career.

I have recently retired, and now slumming as a contractor at the Intel school at Ft Huachuca, AZ.

I have had some contact with LTC John Kalb, commander of the battalion during Desert Storm. He is now retired, after rising to the rank of COL.

Does anyone have any information on the location of SGT Mike Winters??? I'd appreciate any info on where he is now.

Still looking for fellow "Bandit Scouts". I am in contact with Mike "T" Taylor and SGT. John Yang. Also would like to contact a "redcoat" Scout who became Delta Company C.O. driver-- SP/4 Shepard. Hey Shep, remember in August of 84 when you were on C.Q. and you fell asleep and some camoed up drunk scout stole the company guidon? I almost got it home when I took leave. I had it in my flight bag, but as my bags were to be searched in the A.M. I stuck it under my dressed down bunk. Went home on leave, but SFC Beldon was waiting for my return. I did my 40 push-ups and had a heart to heart with the Sarge( a Scout in Nam). Wild times and fond memories. SGT. Hanna has the only picture to make me guilty of this awesome display of a Scout in action. SCOUTS OUT!!!!!!!!!

When I arrived, we (the mortar platoon) were in HHC 3/36 inf. We were reorganized into E co when 3/36 Inf Changed colors to 5/5 CAV. And back into HHC for Desert Storm. Anyone remember the name of the little bar in downtown Butzbach? The one where you could get a Gyros and Pommes for 1.50 Marks? God I miss that place. Of course I don't miss the 2:30 alerts, Graf, Hoenfels, waiting for a fire mission so we could warm our hands on the base of the Mortar Cannon...

Just wanted to acknoledge to everyone that the web page for Lafeyette G. Pool(Tanker Ace) is one of the best I've read. Pool is my Grandfather and I've waited a very long time to be able to read all the accounts of his past. I've heard all of the stories from him and my Granny, but it's alot more to be able to read it like this. I'm 27 yrs. old now and wish I am able to get into the military and follow in his footsteps. But I'm a sever diabetic and unable to. So thank you very much for this documentation of his glorious history.

I can't believe that no one in the scout platoon of old "Blood and Guts" is registered on this page; of course we were not particularly known for our intelligence, the smart ones managed to stay out of the field and in jobs that kept them warm in the winter.Sure miss the beer and the guys of the old platoon, would like to hear from any of the old gang if you are on the webb. I drove HQ 77 for Sgt Bell, in fact I drove it till it blew up before leaving in Dec 68.

I was first assigned to "B"Co as a tank commander then transfered to CSC. I was transfered because I was trained on the Redeye system and when the CSC Co was formed it included Redeye. We were known as the taxi section because of all the jeeps and trailers assigned. When I arrived in 1971 I was a SSG the 1Sg of CSC was 1Sg Henry Tillman and I learned a lot from him that NCO Academy did not teach. He was rough but no one ever cared for his troops like him. The Bn CO was LTC Hattersly and the S-1 was Capt Anderson, SFC Eugene Wenek and SP/4 Severson The one trooper I remember most was SP/4 Birdsong, he was an outstanding trooper. I had a son born during this time and due to a birth defect we were med-evac to the states in December 1973. I stayed in the Army untill 1985 and retired as a 1Sg. I went on to join the Harris Texas County Sheriff's Department and now am wearing Sgt's stripes again. My son recovered from corrective surgery and is a Deputy Sheriff with the department. would like to hear from any one who served with me during this trying period. The men of the "Bandits" were good to me and my family.

Just returned from Germany after a two week TDY deployment to Ramstein AB with the air national guard. I wanted to make a trip up to Kirch Goens and Butzbach and see what happen to the ROCK. Anyway, never made it, however, I did get a chance to stop in Frankfurt, Gelnhausen, and Hanau while on the way up to Berlin by train. I had the pleasure of serving in the 3AD two different times, (and almost a third if I hadn't retired) As a mechanic I was originally assigned to 1-32 AR, but 2-27 owed 1-32 AR a track mechanic, so I was went to work on M109A1's, Then when I returned the 3rd time to europe (2nd time 3/11 ACR)I was assigned to 1-48, changed to 4-18 INF, and we were supported by 45 FSB (Forward Support Battalion) where there motto was "We don't support, and you can't make us" The even made a video and played it for us at a battalion dining in.

I remember us sitting on the back of a truck as we were preparing to leave, singing Silent Night Holy Night and the kids on the ground singing along with Stille Nacht, Heilge Nacht, lots of soldiers and lots of tears of joy,God bless...

Went back to Butzbach and Ayers to check it out. Worked for about six months on the economy under the table and miss it alot. Probably will go back even though Iam getting old. Just can't get enough of that old feeling. I still love the town of Butzbach and will go back and live like a pauper. Hello to all of my old friends-Joe Telgenhof, Russ Johnson, Bill Steadman and Mikey.

Have fond memories and will never forget all the brawls, comraderie, and partying. Hello to all I didn't mention. In the immortal words of the terminator-"I'll be back".

Am I still a member?

Web Manager's Note:  you are probably referring to the old "Spearhead Association".  No one seems to know how that was organized or where its records went upon inactivation of the 3d Armored Division.  In effect, it appears to no longer exist.  There are currently two veterans' organizations associated with the 3d Armored Division:  the first is the WWII-only "3d Armored Division Association (1941-45)"; the other is the "Association of 3d Armored Division Veterans", open to 3AD veterans regardless of era served.  The latter is the organization that sponsors this website.

I was in 1st platoon and served initially as the Platoon Leader's T.C. The evening prior to the ground war, I resumed my original position as a Team Leader and T.C. for 2nd squad. My Squad leader was SSG Carlos Ayub. My memory fails me now pretty often, so I should have written the information that I knew a long time ago. However, there are a few of my comrades which were assigned with me in Delta Company and we may collectively be able to provide much information on the roster and events of our specific company. I am looking for any and all former members of my unit. I am stationed at the MANSCEN, Fort LeonardWood. I am currently serving as a Small Group Leader in Engineer BNCOC. My e-mail address is: gonzalest@wood.army.mil, or hustlers_g@jobe.net. Thank you for this web site SSG Gonzales

Noticed that HHC DISCOM does info does not include Division Ammunition Officer/Division Ammunition Office/and DISCOM HHC Commander, ISG + The HHC Commander is the 3D Armored Division Rear Tactical Operations Center (TOC)Commandant. (Jerry Torres, DAO and HHC Commander 3D Armored Division DISCOM (Aug 85-Sep 88)

Also add MMC (Materiel Management Center) organization to HHC DISCOM - provides all divisional support for all classes of supply (MAJ/LTC SLOT) Also Operations Officer (S-3) Position (Maj/LTC). Did it include also an Aviation Section - and Aviation Unit (may have moved out of Organization)? It did when I was there.

Missing also from DISCOM Organization is the Missile Maintenance Company (E Company).

More General Powell Information: LTG Collin Powell was the V Corps commander (3AD/8ID) For about 6+ months and at first refused to leave his corps command when called by the pentagon, until called personally by the President sometime during (85-88). He wanted to serve his full tour with his troops.

Served in A 3/36 In on the Rock, Ayers Kasern 79-81, my CO was Cpt Christoper B. Dickey and 1SG was Robert Webber, my Battalion Cdr was LTC Corson, and My Brigade Cdr was Recently retired Gen Gordan R. Sullivan. I have some great pics of the Kasern in an album if anybody needs some I can scan. During early 1981 Co A had a fire which gutted the third floor, we were luck to get out that night w/ few injuries, I was there on alert many mornings. One I'll never forget was the day we moved out to sector from our AA it was the morning after the newly formed Delta Force was forced to withdraw after a failed attempt to rescure American hostages held in Iran. I am currently approaching retirement from active service now with the NJ Army National Guard, I am a Operations NCO for an Infantry battalion, I owe a lot of my current sucess to the things I learned in my early days on the Rock

To whom it may concern, I had been looking for such a site like this one for awhile now and was very pleased and very shocked at the same time. As I was browse through the site I came across an area or page were it was stating the soldiers of 3rd AD that have been killed or died and to my surprise my name was on that list. Well not to sound like a wise ass, I'm still breathing and kicking very much. No offense taken, but it would be nice if my name could be removed from that list. Thank You Torres,Daniel E

Arrived in Frankfurt,March 1968. Was stationed at Gibbs Kaserne. Worked at Drivers Testing for 15 months. This was located across street from the Plantation Club. Up the street from the WACs Barracks. Down the street from the 97th General Hospital. Ran the Arms Room for 3 months at HHC V Corps at Gibbs. Worked the last 6 months at the IG Farben (later Abrams) Bldg in the Unclassified Distribution Center. My (then) wife came to Germany and we lived on Am-Tiergarten Sta. Loved my time in Germany and went back December 1999. Things sure had changed in 30 years. Gibbs is overgrown with weeds and I.G. Farben was being refurbished for the university. Would love to hear from others that was stationed there.

It would mean a great deal to me to hear from any 3AD veteran especially those from WW II. As veterans we all have something that non-veterans cannot understand. A civilian has no comprehension of the bond formed between those serving our country be i9t peace time or war time. If at all possible, contact those you served with and keep in touch with them as you go through life.

The 899th was a separate Tk Bn stationed at Fliegerhorst Kaserne during the 1950's. It was part of the 4th Armor Group which consisted of three tank battlions and two Armored Infantry Battlions. The 899th was deactivated in 1958 or 1959. During my time with the Battlion as a tank platoon leader and company executive officer our Battlion S3 was a young Captain Alexander Haig. I departed the battlion in November 1956 just prior to the Russian invasion of Hungary.

Sometime in 2001 & with the help of my GS-12 Computer Specialist son, I will dive into a ‘Jim & Gelnhausen: A Little of This, A Little of That’ “home page”. I would like to include scans of Fulda Gap maps, Thanksgiving 1962 HHC 2d ARB 48th Infantry Menu, insignias, a few pictures, etc. Before I focus in that direction I would like to share something here & therein keep it separate from being part of home page endeavor. I married my high school sweetheart on 1 May 1962, 3 days before leaving for AIT Signal School in Ft Gordon, GA & then on to NY & a boat ride to Germany. I arrived in Gelnhausen on the first Sunday in September 1962. As a married RA (I enlisted for 3 years), I was obliged to a 24 month tour of duty in Gelnhausen. My wife made preparations to join me in Gelnhausen (I still have her Scandinavian Airlines, SAS, health check card dating from that time) . . . however, I was told by more than one person above the junior enlisted grade (including the Company Commander) that Gelnhausen was really crowded, that command sponsored soldiers (let’s call ‘em E7s) should have an opportunity to rent the available housing "on the economy" pending their sponsored quarters coming available, etc. (the “etc.” to include that junior EMs were frowned upon finding apartments in communities beyond the immediate Gelnhausen area … since they were a problem in getting to Post for Alerts, etc.) I was told that it would be better to wait “9 months or so” before considering bringing my wife over. (I also got the hogwash about how being 8 months into E3 by then, & likely really close to E4, might really improve my financial ability to compete with the above E7s in the housing market.) By the 9 months later date my wife had become deeply involved in some serious family issues involving her parents & her siblings, of which there were 3. As a consequence, she never did come to Germany. I was amazed to read a US Congress report dated 1978, which stated that prior to 1973 the military (Army in this case) could observe "no financial plight (because few junior enlisted personnel could afford to support a wife on their meager pay, to say nothing of transporting a family overseas at their own expense)." Page 8, "Junior Enlisted Personnel Stationed Overseas", Wash, DC: US GPO, 1979. Oh, by the way, the very next sentence on page 8 cryptically states, "With the advent of the All-Volunteer Force and the consequent higher pay for junior enlisted personnel, equitable treatment of even the most junior personnel became an issue." (The word-smiths were really busy on that document.)

Greeting Spearheaders! Great site. Arrived in Oct of 1986 and became Platoon Sergeant of 1st Platoon D 3/36th. Great Platoon! In 1987, I was drafted by new BC, LTC Goff to run the S-3. I couldn't even spell TOC! Went through Bradley NETT and reflagging to 5-5 CAV in October 1988 as the Operations Sergeant (borrowed a video camera from TASO and videoed the ceremony on the parade ground. Perhaps the only copy in the world). In 1999, moved back to the line and took over 1st Platoon, C 5-5 CAV as an 11B! No, I did not reclass to 11M. In Apr of 1990, took over as 1SG under CPT Schaffer when 1SG Johnson was relieved by LTC Deegan. PCS'ed in August 1990. Without a doubt, KG was the best four years I spent in my 21 years of active duty. Sad to see what it looks like now. Oh well, life goes on! Retired in April 1994. To all from the Ready First Combat Team - Bayonets!!

I was in 2/32 Armor twice from Jun 1976 to Oct 1979 then I returned in Apr 1981 to Jun 1988. I was Bn Master Gunner 1984 - 1986, During my last stretch I was in C Co from 1986 to 1988, Acting First Sergeant for the last part of that period. I spent a good part of my career/life there, and have many fond memories of my old home. I'd enjoy hearing from any old friends who were there with me if they happen to be browsing this site and notice my message. If you'd like to say hi please drop me a line at my email address. I'm really, really, really, enjoying retirement, mainly because of my experiences at the "Rock". I believe I have a lifetime membership to the "Spearhead Association" also, and at one time owned the key to the back gate of Ayers Kaserne. I enjoyed looking around this site, and hats off to those responsible individuals who put this together. They've done a superb job. "Outlaws" I'll talk to you later MO
