Sadly, he passed away at the Minnesota Veterans Home (Luverne, MN) in 2012. His brother (Julius) was attached to Office Of Strrategic Services (OSS) Det 204, ETOUSA (Europe) (declassified. 2008). I was an E-5 then so I went out of the nco room and told as many in Service Battery I could find, everyone else thought I was making this up. At sometime later the alert siren went off so they finally realized i wasn’t joking. Wow where did the time go 50 years ago today.

Service: Cold War | Years: 1963-1967 | Unit: 2nd Bn 36th Inf | Company, Battery or Troop: Bn Maint HHC | Other: | Comment: Bob, I find your use of the word ‘whacked’, inappropriate here at this site. Please remember JFK was our president and still has living family members who may not appreciate the term ‘whacked’ either. May each of our 3rd AD men and women have a most blessed Thanksgiving.

Service: Cold War | Years: 61-64 | Unit: 2/3FA | Company, Battery or Troop: Service Btry. S-4 | Other: | Comment: Been 50 big ones since JFK was whacked, also on a Friday, while we were jumping thru our butts getting ready for AGI/CMMI next morning at 2/3 Arty at Ayers. Think it was early evening when word came down and at first we thought it was a joke but it wasin’t. What was strange was Kennedy had been to Germany just a few months earlier, and among other things, he passed in review in front of the whole 3rd AD. Fifteen thousand of us and too many too pass by him so he trooped the line with his Lincoln and 6 Irish Mafia in the following car…all about 350 lbs. each! We were in full battle rattle, which seems light duty compared with today’s gear. Never catch today’s Dude rolling by with 15,0000 M-14’s beomg faced!

Service: WWII | Years: 1942-1945 | Unit: ? | Company, Battery or Troop: ? | Other: | Comment: FYI: I have a book on 3d Armored Division that was written and published by 3d armored Division on 11 Oct 1945. It was given to the families of the men who died during the invasion. It seems to have been printed in Germany. I am trying to find the original cover so that I can have it restored for my children and grandchildren. This book is from their grandfather who died during the war. I don’t know his unit. His name was Charley Crawford. My understanding was that eventually his body was returned to Texas for burial. Thank you.
