I like your site. You forgot one kaserne and at least one unit. 503rd Finance (3AD Finance) started out in Frankfurt and in the mid 70's moved to Depot Kaserne in Giessen. I cashiered in Giessen and at the Forward Support Teams in Kirch Goens and Friedburg.

Here's how Stuart Loory's 1973 book introduced the 3AD: "The 3rd Armored–or Spearhead–Division [is] headquartered in a suburb of Frankfurt, and its units [sit] astride one of the traditional invasion routes from the East into the industrial heart of West Germany and the other NATO nations beyond. . . . A West Point graduate (class of 1942), a World War II combat veteran, a West Point instructor, a Vietnam veteran, [3rd Armored Division commanding general, Major General William R. Kraft, Jr.] is imbued with the can-do spirit. . . . ' . . . We have a mission in Germany. There's a threat–twenty-two divisions on the other side of the interzonal boundary. If those Soviet divisions weren't there, there would be no reason for us to be here. By our presence and the credibility of our presence–the way we train and act–we deter them from [trying] something.'"

Trying to locate any information someone might have on my father, PFC John A. Lucas. He served in 3rd Armorred from 1954-1956. Never talked much about what he did and was wondering if some one might know where I could find this info. Any thing would be greatly appreciated.

I served as the BN S-3 Bradley Gunner, (Major James A. Fitch Jr.) Great Officer and father. The Officers and NCO of the S-3 Section performed the mission given with total professionalism. They all will be remembered well. LTC Robert J. Fulcher (Black Smoke) Lead the Task Force with great skill, which brough us home with small loses. I miss them all. Message to all 3AD vets: Just a passing thought (no, I haven't received any e-mail to prompt this): it is not my intention to step on anyone's toes . . . we all served at different times & under different circumstances. For example, folks at either side of 3AD's existence were in combat (WWII; Desert Storm). Folks at other times within that ca 40 years did things like gyroscoping to Germany to provide the first armor barrier in front of the Fulda Gap (the earlier armored div in Germany, 2AD hq'd @ Bad Kreuznach in the 50's, was basically on the West side of the Rhine). Folks held 3AD together during Vietnam; during the rebuilding after Vietnam; and through all the changes of the 1970s & 1980s.

Webmaster's note:  Jim is right about what he wrote above:  from 1956 to 1990, the Cold War veterans of the 3d Armored Division made up the one of the strongest conventional deterrents to the Warsaw Pact forces on the other side of the "Iron Curtain".  We all remember the frequent alerts, roll-outs, GDP battlebooks, and the realization that we were something of a tripwire for the free world.

How do I find out what happened to 2-6FA that was stationed on Hutier Kaserne, in Hanau?

Wemaster's note:  2-6 FA was reflagged to 4-82 FA in 1988, and served as the Direct Support howitzer battalion to 2d BDE during combat operations in Operation Desert Storm.  It inactivated in late 1991 as the 3d Armored Division stood down for the last time.

Anyone recall the Alert @ Coleman Kaserne when the Post electricity went out ? For awhile we suspected that the brass had thrown this in as an additional bit of realism (folks were using lighters, flashlights, headlights, etc. to see to open locks, etc.). When we saw candles/kerosine lanterns in/thru bn hq windows & heard some of the language being used by wearers of the brass we decided it wasn't part of the drill. After action "lessons learned": the obvious: Coleman electricity connected to Gelnhausen grid, likely in some undefended substation site (now, I wonder if the Russians ever thought about that?); Post didn't have a back-up system (but, hey, we were gonna scoot outta there anyway & implement all those rumors about demolition charges under all the barracks sos'n the Russkies couldn't use 'em) . . . back to the night in question: I heard some later comic asides about the delaying affect of not having Post electricity during that Alert . . . one comment: had that been the real thing, we took so long to clear Post that the Russians had enough time to get there to help us load our duffle bags onto the POW trucks.

More on 3AD & on Gelnhausen: Source: Stuart Loory's 1973 book DEFEATED. (NY: Random House, 1973) Note: Try to get beyond Loory's stupid title (lots of anti-military in '73)

Anyway, on to 3AD in general & to Gelnhausen:

Pages 118-119 talk of MG Kraft's 3AD, hq'd "in a suburb of Frankfurt".

From page 179: "From Groton, Connecticut to Gelnhausen, Germany . . . "

Pages 183 to 187 are about the (1971-72)condition of the barracks @ Gelnhausen; & B Co, 2-48 IN. Comment: I was amazed that the attitude in the book seemed to be that crowded living conditions in the barracks was a recent phenomenon !! If the major players in the drama (the EMs, Loory, MG Kraft) could have time-machined back 10 years to 1962 THEY WOULD HAVE FOUND PRECISELY THE SAME SITUATION !! (Why do they think they discovered "a new problem" ?????)

I imagine when the 4ID occupied the 5 barracks in the cul-de-sac shortly after they were built in early '50s, they likewise found themselves in typical Army barracks (I don't recall anyone saying it was gonna be like living in an upscale motel . . . each time one of the newfer college dropouts referred to the barracks as "the dorm" he got smacked upside the head.) We were at times like animals in glass walled cages . . . with all the lights on either night or day it was mighty transparent to anyone looking in from outside: for example, I recall a few times when German groups did a Sunday walk-around of the orchard across the way: they definitely stirred up some of the folks in the barracks !! (I can't say anymore, 'cause I might get censored.)

More on GEN Powell (I think we all know about the "bitter cold and biting wind" of winters in Germany . . . especially when you were in the wonderous position of temporarily tc'ing a track on a nice drive in the German countryside, in the middle of the night, & could say, "Look Ma, a Frost Beard !")

In addition to his autobiography, two other biographies on Powell were published in recent years, namely Howard Means’ COLIN POWELL: A BIBLIOGRAPHY (New York: Ballantine Books, 1992, 1993) and David Roth’s SACRED HONOR: A BIOGRAPHY OF COLIN POWELL (San Francisco: HarperSan Francisco, 1993). Descriptions from those two books follow.

From Roth’s description of Powell’s assignment in Gelnhausen:

“Powell finished his first round of Army schooling and set out for the ‘real Army’ in January 1959. He was assigned to guard a section of the Fulda Gap in Germany at the focal point of what was expected to be the Soviets’ avenue of attack into Central Europe. The East German border was less than fifty miles away. Assigned to Gelnhausen as a member of the tank heavy Third Armored Division, Powell’s team included infantrymen in armored personnel carriers. His first job was as a platoon leader with forty men, initially with Company B, Second Armored Rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry, known as ‘Bravo Company, Second of the Forty-Eighth.’ He later served with Company D in the same battalion where he was Company Executive Officer, the commander’s right–hand man. He also served as the company commander for a few months. Through the bitter cold and biting wind of the winters of 1958–59 and 1959–60, Powell with a jeep and his troops, twelve to a vehicle, sat in M59 armored personnel carriers and looked eastward. They faced the men of the Eighth Guards Army, the vanguard of what was feared would be a massive sweep of Red Army forces.” [p. 48.]

From Means’ description of Powell’s assignment in Gelnhausen:

“Powell’s first assignment—the second item in a military resumé that would grow to thirty–four entries and include three continents, seven U.S. forts, the White House West Wing, and nearly every ring of the Pentagon—was as a platoon leader with Company B, Second Armored Rifle Battalion, Forty–Eighth Infantry, with the United States Army in Germany. Powell arrived in October [DECEMBER ?] of 1958, four years and ten months after Secretary of State John Foster Dulles had first enunciated the policy of ‘instant, massive retaliation’ against a direct Soviet attack ‘at times and places of our own choosing’; almost two years after Soviet troops and tanks had rolled into Budapest and crushed the revolt there; and long after there was any real hope, except in the dreamiest diplomatic circles, that the two post–World War II superpowers could find any sort of meaningful common ground. Powell was stationed for much of that time in Gelnhausen, near the border of the Hessen and Bavarian states, on the Kinzig River, less than fifty miles from the East German border, where—so military doctrine held—the ground war between East and West was most likely to begin.” [pp. 101–102.]

In my earlier entry, I had units mixed up. The 1/32 Armor in 1992 became the 3/12th. Cav. and the 3/32 Armor became the 1/12 Cav., both units are here at Fort Hood with the 1st. Cavalry Division. In 1995 the 1/32 Armor was re-activated and is now at Fort Lewis, WA. as part of the 2d. Infantry Division. Like to hear from any old or new members of the 32d. Armor.

Blue Blazer with Full Size 3AD Insignia on Front Pocket.

Does anyone out there from 1st of the 48th @ Gelnhausen recall the time in the Autumn of 1963 when the Battalion Commander announced that the only acceptable civilian attire to qualify for any off-Post pass was slacks and a Navy Blue Blazer with the full size 3AD patch sewn on the breast pocket? Of course, the Army Class A uniform also qualified the pass-goer. P.S. I know the reason . . . I'm just wondering if any of you all recall same.

The following is from page 26 of the September 11, 1961 issue of U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT: "Intelligence report from Poland: Soviet troops are moving westward night and day toward Germany."; "The 200,000 dependents of U.S. servicemen in Europe are getting no assurances. They get this advice: If shooting starts, get in a car and head for the nearest seaport, where there may be a ship going to the U.S." . . . Sounds like dependents were on their own to get back to the States.

All members of 3AD were part of worldwide U.S. Forces military alert to Defcon 3 (war alert) in the latter part of October, 1962. This was during the Cuban Crisis. Normal peacetime Defense Condition is Defcon 5.

Served as CSM, 2-3FA Regiment Jan 83-Oct85 under LTC Robert Allen, and LTC James Siket, and during that time we moved from Schloss Kaserne to the Rock to new facilities. Ground was broken in 1983, and LTC Allen, and then COL Gordon Sullivan and I did the digging.

I noticed in 33d Armor Regiment Homepage that one button was for "Coleman Kaserne." The 2d, 3d, & 4th para's when "Coleman Kaserne" is opened up address Colin Powell. That 4th para includes an excerpt from Powell's autobiography MY AMERICAN JOURNEY. Referring to his time at Coleman Kaserne after his December 1958 arrival Powell states in that excerpt, "The cold war was frigid then." Part of what Powell was referring to was the fall out from Khrushchev's 1958 ultimatum to the Western Allies to vacate West Berlin in 6 months. The "Extended Berlin Crisis Era" was from 1958 to 1963. Page 45 of Powell's MY AMERICAN JOURNEY states in part, "In those days, the Air Force and the Navy had nuclear weapons . . . Our prize was a 280mm atomic cannon carried on twin truck-tractors, looking like a World War I Big Bertha. The Russians obviously wanted to know where our 280s were so that they could knock them out if and when they attacked. Consequently, the guns were always guarded by an infantry platoon as the trucks hauled them around the German forests to keep the Soviets guessing. . . . " (Colin L. Powell, MY AMERICAN JOURNEY, NY: Random House, 1995.)

I'm very excited to have found this site! I've been searching the web for a 3rd AD Association! During my time with the 3rd AD, I served in the 3rd Platoon of A Company. My Tank Commander was Sgt. David Angeli and my Loader was Spc. Christopher Billingsley. I would love to get in contact with either of them, or any of the other members of A Co 2-67 Armor. I think the association is a great idea and noble undertaking! Go Iron Dukes!

I served with the 503rd Aviation Company as a helicopter crewchief. We were the first to mount twin .30 cal machineguns under the carrage of H-13H helicopters. We first tried twin .50cal machineguns, but when fired in flight the vibration was so great the pilot would almost loose control of the helicopter

I was the 3rd Armored Div Arty Soldier of the Quarter for 1972 and an honor graduate of the NCO school in Kirch goins. We kicked ass with our M60s. Nobody done it any better than the 3rd Armored!!

The following is in regard to the 1958-1963 "Extended Berlin Crisis."

1958: Khrushchev gives 6 month ultimatum for Western Allies to vacate West Berlin.

The following is from page 111 of Department of Defense Annual Report For Fiscal Year 1964 (1 July 1963 to 30 June 1964), Wash DC: US Govt Printing Office, 1966. "In Berlin during fiscal year 1964, the prevailing situation vis-a-vis the Russians was a continuation of the status quo that took shape after the 1961 crisis. Two incidents, involving a confrontation of U.S. and U.S.S.R. forces, occurred in the fall of 1963 when U.S. Army convoys were denied access to the Berlin-Helmstedt autobahn on procedural grounds. Passage was effected when the United States demonstrated an unswerving determination not to bow to coercion." On page 112 the beginning of what was to eventually become the REFORGER exercises is described, namely the October 1963 Exercise BIG LIFT.

In the Spring of 1963 I served a tour doing Post Radio Watch at CCB. The radio shack was by the stairs going up to the roadway halfway between the CCB Headquarters Building and the building holding Battalion Headquarters of 2d ARB, 48th Infantry. The Late Shift included not only Radio commo checks, but also a commo check on the Berlin telephone land-line. The Berlin operator was to call a commo check each night between midnight & 1 AM. The duty person at the Gelnhausen Post Radio was to notify CCB duty officer if the telephone call did not come in. The concern was that the Russians or East Germans might deliberately cut the land-line running across East Germany to Berlin, possibly as a precursor to more ominous action.

Speaking of telephones, anyone at Gelnhausen in 1964 or earlier remember how difficult & time consuming it was to place a telephone call back to the States, or to receive one from the States ? I recall people coming back to the barracks to await the German phone operator's call that they were getting nearer to establishing a connection back to the States. This was way before satellite links & probably sounds like the dinosaur age for those who knew nothing else. But such times did exist, & they were not pretty as far as telephone connections go.

There was a small reunion in Tulsa, OK this year, on June 3 -6. I went to it for the first time, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The bulk of the folks were from 1958-60, and had been in Gelnhausen (CCB, later to be 2nd BDE). Although I was indeed a stranger when I got there, that didn't last long.

The good folks I mentioned are trying to get a division-wide reunion going, and I wish them well. I will certainly try to attend again. If anybody out there is, or has attempted a reunion of Kirch Gons Cold War veterans, please contact me! I would be interested in seeing old compadres again. Particularly, a MAJ (ret) Thrasher, who rotated out of K.G. in 1964 (I think).

Thank you, Johnny Hudson, for getting me involved with this!!

It was great to see someone take the time and effort to add to this web site. I started the military in 1-36 and transitioned to Bradleys during my stay at "The Rock". As I travel from post to post people often ask where I was stationed in 3AD. When I mention "K.G." they quickly respond with "The Rock". It was a great way to start my career. I tried to return to K.G. not knowing they had closed. I managed to talk DA in to sending me to D co 1-36 IN, Friedberg Germany. Since I can't go home I wanted to be close to it. It's good to be back in the 36th Infantry family.

The Cold War period is identified above, for purposes of this guestbook, as from 1945 to 1989. The "Cold War in Germany" period for 3AD might look something like this:

1955-58: PENTOMIC Buildup (the early timeframe to include preparation in CONUS, prior to gyroscoping of units to Germany)

1958-63: Extended Berlin Crisis Era (XRef: Khrushchev threats & other disruptive actions)

Autumn of 1964: Beginning of Vietnam Era (& end of Khrushchev era in November, 1964)

1973: Beginning of Post-Vietnam Era/the "All Volunteer Army" Era (Note: The Vietnam Era also included the 2 wars in the Middle East (1967 & 1973) & the needs of the Israeli Army.)

1973-1979: All Volunteer Army in the 1970s

1980-1990: All Volunteer Army in the 1980s

Stationed at "the Rock" – Kirch Gons in Hqs&Hqs Co, from Feb 1959 to April 1961. I was in S-2 and drove one of the three armored personnel carriers sitting next to the post hqs. bldg.

Then later stationed after reenlistment at Ft. Hood in B Co. 66 Armor from 1962-64. In Europe I was part of Winter Shield I in Grafenvohr and part of "Operation Big Lift" in 1963 when all of 3d Armored was air lifted from Ft. Hood to Germany for maneuvers. Am interested in chatting with those who find this information relative to them.

Anyone out there remember a bad duce and a half crash into a tank in either 1962-64 at Ft. Hood? Happened early in am during very bad & cold weather. Several soldiers were killed and many received severe burns. I am looking for info on this topic. I was on the truck and called back to mess hall before truck left. Please let me know. Thank you.

I joined the division at Fort Knox, Ky., in 1955 after reactivation of the unit. Shipped to Bremerhaven in spring of '56 on the USNS Darby..returned in spring of '58 on the USS Randall. Stationed in Frankfurt at Edwards Kaserne. Lots of "alerts" in those days which were always fun. Entertainers? There were many..I can remember Lionel Hampton, Gary Crosby and Jayne Mansfield. Hard work, great times.

I served in 3AD in G-3 PLEX (for a few months in 1987), then as HHC 3AD Commander in 88-89, finally as S-3 of 1-48/4-18 IN in 2d (Iron) Brigade in 89-91. My boss in G-3 PLEX was then-MAJ Leo Rios. I commanded the division HHC when then-MG George Joulwan took command of the division from MG Tom Griffin. I served as battalion S-3 under command of then-LTC Bob St. Onge who was succeeded by then-LTC Rob Fulcher who commanded TF 4-18 IN during Desert Storm. The TF's soldiers, noncommissioned officers and officers performed magnificently in combat, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served them & with them.

They were some of the best times I had and the people I served with are still remembered in my stories I tell to friends and relative. I've started writing a book on the people and place during my time in Germany. Thanks

Gyroed with CCC on USMSTS Gen. Maurice Rose. Spent about 17 mos with Co C at Ray Barracks and the last 11 mos of my tour with H&A at Fliegerhorst. Came back in 6 yrs later in different direction (Airborne Inf, S.F.) did RVN tours with 5th Group and 101st Abn. Wished I could have been part of 3d AD during Desert Storm. They did an outstanding job. I wish we could have had the chance to do the same thing in Hungary in 56.

Any oldtimers still alive  (and not in jail or in the nuthouse) who remember The Hanau Soldiers Committee, Fightback and Chris Coates from the LMDC? Olivers Pizza, Lamboy Anne and other mischief that always seem to originate from Francois Kassern? Back before military service was trendy and all you needed was the ability to make an "X" to sign your name? Outstanding website! May the Great Spirit continue to watch over all of our brothers and sisters who continue to wear the uniform and those who hung it up for good. Death before dishonor!

Not enough recognition for "Defenders of the Fulda Gap" during Oct '62 Cuban Crisis: the closest U.S. ever came to Real Time War with USSR . . . Concern @ time was Soviet feint (under the guise of a Cross-Border "mistake") to distract from high-seas confrontation w/ their missile carrying freighters.

Great Website!!!! Had a great time serving with the 3AD. Those FX's(Grafenwehr,Hohnenfils,Wildflicken,& border duty) were a bitch. However, I now look at those times with fond memories. I looking for other CSC veterans who served from 1972-1974 as scouts, grunts, TOW gunners, ground surveillance/redeye teams, and maintenance personnel. Our commanding officer at the time was Captain Darrel Winkler(Vietnam Vet); he later left the army in the late 70's and became a merc(soldier of fortune) in Rhodesia for the white government of Premier Ian Smith), Major Winkler operated a mechanized armor calvary unit whose task was to take out insurgents trying to overthrow the white apartheid government of Premier Ian Smith, I'm not sure if he got out of the country after the black nationalist eventually overtook the apartheid government.Major Winkler and his unit's picture can be seen in a book called SOLDIER OF FORTUNE. I very proud to serve with the division that has a glorious and illustrous tradition, that is why it's saddens to hear that WWII 3rd Armor Division Association veterans have excluded post WWII 3AD vets from joining their organization. Now that the division has officially been inactivated and its colors encased, veterans of the 3AD should come together as one association not two. As time pasts on the WWII veterans will inevitably pass on, with one association we can honor and perpetuate the legacies of those vets, but we should honor all 3AD vets who served in the division from WWII to Operation Desert Storm, by doing so we bring honor to a great division with a great tradition. And the botton is that vets who serve with the 3AD will always be SPEARHEADERS. Scouts Out.

The Rock may be gone but the people who served there will never forget the great times we had whether in the field of out on the town. I like to hear from other guys that where there during 71-76

My husband was stationed at the Rock in April 1988, we joined him in January of 1989. As much as I didn't want to be there, I am thankful that I was, I made some life long friends there and our children Calie and John-Henry had great experiences there as well. Now that they're grown and almost grown (21 BS 16) they share their experiences with us; I'm statsified that I made a good decision that benefited them, as well as Joseph and I. All of the people, military as well as local nationals that we met and assoicated with most are still our frends, some silver and some gold and I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet you all. If anyone has contact with the Jablonsky's please give them my e-mail address.

I was tank a commnader in 3rd platoon at the "RocK" in Kirchgeons (Ayers Kaserne). They called me "Big Daddy". I retired in September of 1993, the transition was "interesting" but we adjusted well and I am throughly enjoying my civilian status. We made some wonderful friends in Germany and we had some great times. I live in Georgia now, just outside of Ft. Stewart, if any of you Bounty Hunters are still active and in the Ft. Stewart area look me up we're in the book or e-mail me and I'll get in touch with you.

I would like to hear from anyone that was in "cobra" Co.1/33 from 1962 to 1964.If anyone remembers, I drove for the 'OLD MAN'. That was the good old days. I was in HHQ Co. CCB across the pond before I was transfered to 1/33. Was there from 1961 to 1962. Remember the Fisher Stub and the Dolly Bar? Spent most of my off time there. Went back there on vacation in 1994,but it was not the same as I remember. The whole town has changed.

My father was with the 45th Med, 7th Corp, and am interested in hearing from anyone with whom he may have served or who knew him. This is a great site, what a marvelous way to keep memories alive of the veterans who've served. My father (dod:6-1982) was very proud of this unit and what it accomplished, and I am sure he would be thrilled to learn that there are so many of us interested in learning more of the Spearheads proud history. As his only daughter, I can't tell you how excited I was to find this posting! So many mis-informed people confuse the 3rd Armd with Pattons Third, and its nice to see so many out there to help set the record straight. My father was very touchy on the subject of the two divisions being assumed as one and the same, and with good reason. To all who are presently serving and those with past service, god bless and god speed!

SPENT 3 PLUS YEARS AT THE ROCK. ANYBODY REMEMBER THE YES CLUB IN FRANKFURT? TRANSFERRED BACK TO FT HOOD FOR 6 MONTHS, WHAT A CHANGE THAT WAS! ANYBODY KNOW THE WHEREABOUTS OF JEFF MULLINS, HE TRANSFERRED OUT OF A CO TO HQ CO 3/36 AND DROVE FOR THE XO. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M SAYING THIS BUT I ENJOYED TRAPESING AROUND IN THE WOODS. TO THIS DAY I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW OUT OF CONTROL THE US ARMY WAS DURING THE TIME I SPENT ON THE ROCK, LET'S FACE IT, WE HAD A BUNCH OF CHICKEN SHIT CADRE, OF WHICH I WAS A NOT SO WILLING MEMBER. THANK GOD THE RUSSIANS NEVER CAME ACCROSS THE BORDER, THE 1ST BRIGADE WOULD HAVE BEEN WIPED OUT IN 24 HOURS. I 'VE HEARD THAT THE ROCK WAS BROUGHT BACK INTO ORDER SHORTLY AFTER I LEFT.
