SPC Peter Swano's Posthumous Bronze Star Medal

Above - The Bronze Star Medal being posthumously awarded to SPC Peter L. Swano, Jr.  The soldier accepting the award is SPC Ray Riojas, Peter Swano's squad leader for Gun 6, 3-5 Cavalry Mortar Platoon.

Above - SSG Roy J. Summerall, killed by a landmine in the vicinity of Safwan, Iraq.  This photo, provided by Tom Meara of 4-32 Armor, is thought to be the last picture taken of SSG Summerall.

Gentry, Kenneth B. SSG 2/A/4-7 CAV Killed along with Edwin Kutz, possibly by fratricide, on 26 FEB 91 during direct fire engagement with an Iraqi armored unit. He is survived by his wife and two children;

Hampton, Tracy SGT A/2-3 FA Killed January 1991 in Cement City, Dahran, Saudi Arabia when the water-logged sandbags of his bunker collapsed on him.
Jones, Ronald S. SGT C/4-8 CAV Killed when fragments of an RPG hit his vehicle and were deflected into the vehicle hatch.
Kime, Joseph G. CPT HHC, 1st BDE (Assist. S4) Killed March 1991 when his HMMWV hit a mine on a Main Supply Route (MSR).
Kutz, Edwin B. SGT 2/A/4-7 CAV Killed along with Kenneth Gentry, possibly by fratricide, on 26 FEB 91 during direct fire engagement with Iraqi armored unit;

Stokes, Adrian L. PFC HHC, 4-32 AR (Scout Platoon - HQ26 Loader) Killed in Action when his vehicle was allegedly hit by a Tawakalna Division ("Republican Guard") T-72 tank; possibly fratricide death; probably fratricide; Riverside, CA
Summerall, Roy J. SSG 2/C/4-32 AR (M1A1 Tank Commander) Killed 2 April 1991 during a patrol when he stepped on a mine or cluster bomb vicinity of the Safwan, Iraq refugee camp.  He died during aerial medevac.
Swano, Peter L. "Pete" SPC HHC/3-5 CAV (Mortars) Died of illness around 20 FEB 1991.  He suffered from pneumonia-like symptoms in the Forward Assembly Area (FAA).  Circumstances of his diagnosis and treatment are not factually known.  He became critically ill, and had to be taken to the battalion aid station.  He collapsed and died there just days before the ground attack started.  TF 3-5 CAV named the "Black Knight" (chess piece) emblem painted on all combat vehicles "SWANO" in his honor.
