landmine in the vicinity of Safwan, Iraq. This photo,
provided by Tom Meara of 4-32 Armor, is thought to be the last
picture taken of SSG Summerall.

Died of illness around 20 FEB 1991.
He suffered from pneumonia-like symptoms in the Forward
Assembly Area (FAA). Circumstances of his diagnosis
and treatment are not factually known. He became
critically ill, and had to be taken to the battalion aid
station. He collapsed and died there just days
before the ground attack started. TF 3-5 CAV named
the "Black Knight" (chess piece) emblem painted
on all combat vehicles "SWANO" in his honor.
